SUNNUNTAIAAMU PISPALASSA - aloitusta / SUNDAY MORNING IN PISPALA - Beginning

Uusi Pispala-lino on aluillaan. Tästä tulee aika iso, 30 x 40 cm eli A3. Haluan kuvaan tietenkin Pispalan portaat. Nyt portaat ovat kuvan reunassa ja jatkuvat harjun päälle asti. Portaat kaiverretaan viimeisinä linolevylle. Portaiden vierellä on paljon taloja niin kuin niitä Pispalassa on. Mielessäni on sunnuntaiaamun tunnelma. Tavoittelen jotain rauhallista tunnelmaa kaivertamalla talojen vaaka- ja pystysuoria laudoituksia, monenmallisia ikkunoita ja kattoja. Kuviot ja pinnat luovat kuvaan hiljaisen rytmin.

A new linocut of Pispala is at the beginning. This one will be quite large: 30 x 40 cm i.e. A3. Of course I want Pispala stairs in the picture. Now the stairs are on the left side of the picture and they continue to the top of the ridge. The stairs are the last I carve on the lino plate. There will be a lot of houses on the side of the stairs as there really are in Pispala. In my mind I have the feeling of a Sunday morning. I´m seeking some kind of peaceful feeling carving the horizontal and vertical wood cladding, many shapes of windows and roofs. The patterns and surfaces create a silent rhythm to the picture.

TEIJA LEHTO & JAANA PAULUS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Galleria Saskian näyttelyssä haukkoo ihan henkeä, tekniikka on niin  huimaa. Teija Lehdon ja Jaana Pauluksen isokokoiset ja moniväriset puupiirrokset ovat mestarillisia. Teija Lehto (s. 1965) ottaa aiheensa läheltä, keittiön pöydältä, hellan levyltä tai tiskeistä. Kuvissa on kuppeja, kattiloita ja lautasia, valot heijastuvat posliini- ja metallipinnoilla, kakun kerma saa veden kielelle. Hämmästyttävää, miten näihin kuviin on saatu niin monta värisävyä puupiirrostekniikalla. Ja samaa hämmästyy Jaana Pauluksen (s.1963) puupiirroksissa. Puiden oksistot ovat monikerroksisia ja jostain oksien joukosta tai maisemasta löytyy usein ihmiset hämmentyneet kasvot. Joissakin töissä on upeaa kultausta tai metalliväriä.

You just gasp for breath at this exhibiton at Gallery Saskia, Tampere, the technique is so fascinating. The large and multicoloured woodcuts by Teija Lehto and Jaana Paulus are masterly. Teija Lehto (b. 1965) takers her subjects from a kitchen table, stove plate or washing-up. There are cups, kettles and plates in the pictures, the light is reflecting from porcelain and metal surfaces, the cream of a cake makes your mouth water. It´s amazing how they have got so many shades of colours into the pictures with woodcut technique. And you are astonishing the same fact in Jaana Paulus's (b. 1963) woodcuts. The branches of trees are multilayered, and somewhere among the twigs you can often find confused human faces. There even is glorious golden or metallic colour on some of the works. 

TANELI ESKOLA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Taneli Eskolan (s. 1958) valokuvanäyttely galleria Nykyajassa on todella kaunis. Mustavalkoiset kuvat ovat harmonisia ja sävykkäitä. Niissä on paljon varjoja, heijastuksia, perspektiivejä ja hienoja rajauksia. On ällistyttävää, miten Eskola on voinut osua kohdalle juuri silloin kun kohteet ovat oikeassa kulmassa, ilme on täydellinen ja yksityiskohdat ovat kohdillaan. Näitä kuvia ei ole voinut lavastaa tai harjoitella. Onko kuvaaja kulkenut ympäriinsä kamera valmiina ja napsinut tuhansia kuvia, joista helmet sitten erottuvat. Mieleen tulee tietenkin Henry Cartier-Bresson. Yksi värillinen kuva oli mustavalkoisten joukossa, siinäkin muodot ja kuviot on juuri oikein.

Taneli Eskola's (b. 1958) photography exhibition at Gallery Nykyaika in Tampere is really beautiful. Black and white photographs are harmonious and tuneful. There are a lot of shadows, reflections, perspectives and fine croppings. It´s really staggering , how Eskola has just happened to be at the right place and time when the targets have been at the right angle, the expression on a face is perfect and all the details are spot on. These pictures could not have been staged or practiced. Has the photographer walked around with his camera ready and snapped thousands of photos, of which then the diamonds have separated. Henry Cartier-Bresson comes of course on my mind. There is only one colour photo among the black and white ones, also in it the shapes and patterns are just right.

Kissa on kiivennyt pianon päälle ja kurkistaa nuottivihon yli. Nämä kissan silmät anovat: "Soita minulle uudelleen tämä kappale!" vai "Lopeta jo tuo epävireinen pimputus!" Valokuvan on ottanut ranskalainen Édouard Boubat (1923-1999) Pariisissa vuonna 1982.

LINTUJEN KARKELOT / BIRDS GALORE

Lintujen karkelot - linopiiros/pastellityö on valmis. Tämä on toinen Karkelot-sarjaa, jonka juuri perustin. Aikaisempi työ tähän sarjaan oli Korrojen karkelot. Tässä uudessakin on alaosassa linopiirros, nyt Pispalasta portaineen ja haulitorneineen. Kuu on myös irrallinen linopiirros, nyt pronssinvärisenä. Ja linnut, niitä on noin 50 linopiirrosta (vaikea laskea tarkkaa lukua) ja mukana on mustia, harmaita ja valkoisia lintuja. Tämän lintuparven vedostus onnistui kun tein pastellitaivaan yksiväriseksi ilman pilviä.

Birds Galore linocut & pastel work is ready. This is the second one in my series of Galore, I just set up this series. The earlier work in this series was Bugs Galore. This new one also has a linocut at the bottom, now of Pispala with the stairs and shot tower. The moon is also a separate linocut, now bronze coloured. And birds, there are about 50 linocuts of them (hard to calculate the exact number), and there are black, gray and white birds. Printing this flock of birds was now possible when I made the pastel sky plain without any clouds.

Toinen versio Karkelot-sarjaan on tekeillä. Tämä on Lintujen karkelot, ja nyt aion saada kuvaan mahtumaan kokonaisen lintoparven. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta ja taivaalla paljon linopiirroslintuja. Taivaan on oltava aika yksivärinen, ja sehän  tehdään pehmeillä pastelliväreillä.

The second version for my Galore series is under way. This will be Birds Galore, and now I want to add to the picture a whole flock of birds. At the bottom there is a linocut of Pispala and on the sky there are a lot of linocut birds. The sky has to be quite even coloured, so it will me made with soft pastels.

Pirkko Lepistön (1922-2005) naivistisessa maalauksessa pienenpieni taiteilija maalaa isoa taulua. Seinillä on valmiita tauluja ja lattialla keskeneräisiä: maisemia ja kukkia. Ulkona ikkunan takana on paljas syksyinen tai keväinen koivikko. Kaksi kissaakin löytyy kuvasta. Toinen istuu ikkunalaudalla ja toinen katselee epäuskoisena ruokakuppiaan. Nukke nurkassa on melkein yhtä iso kuin maalari. Tunnelma on jotenkin sumuinen, sinertävä ja tuo mieleen Tove Janssonin satumaailman.

A tiny artist is painting a large canvas in this Naïve Art painting by Pirkko Lepistö (1922-2005). There are finished paintings on the walls and some unfinished ones on the floor: landscapes and flowers. Outside behind the window there is a Spring or Autumn birch grove. There are even two cats in the picture. The other one is sitting on the windowsill and the other one is watching unbelievingly at her food bowl. The doll in the corner is almost as big as the painter. The atmosphere is somehow foggy, bluish, and reminds me of Tove Jansson´s fairy tale world.

Punainen aurinko nousee taivaalle. jossa leijuu vaaleanpunaisia pilviä. Kuvan alaosa on linopiirros Pispalasta. Harjulla näkyy Pyynikin näkötorni ja oikeassa reunassa muutama vuosi sitten Pyhäjärvelle ilmestynyt merikotka. Lisäsin taivaalle vain muutaman irrallisen linopiirroksen linnuista, enkä peittänytkään koko taivasta ja punertavia pilviä linnuilla kuten ensin suunnittelin. Punainen aurinko on pyöreä pala linoa ja taivas on tehty pehmeillä Pan Pastels -väreillä. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

The red sun is rising on the sky where there are floating pink clouds. The bottom part of the picture is a linocut of Pispala. You can see the Pyynikki observation tower on the ridge, and on the right there is a white-tailed eagle that was seen over Pyhäjärvi lake a few years back. I added to the sky only a few separate linocut birds, and I did not fill the entire sky and pink clouds with birds as I planned first. The red sun is a round piece lino, and the sky was done with soft Pan pastel colours. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

Tarkoitus oli tehdä linopiirros/pastellityö Karkelot-sarjaan: Lintujen karkelot eli taivas täynnä lintuja.  Sovittelin jo linopiirrokset linnuista taivaalle. Mutta sitten innostuinkin tekemään aika kirjavan taivaan. Pinkit pastellipilvet veivät mennessään. Eihän tuohon taivaaseen voinut printata päälle noin paljon lintuja. Suunnitelma meni uusiksi ja kuvasta tuleekin Punainen aurinko.

My aim was to make a linocut/pastel work to my Galore-series: Birds Galore and the sky full of birds. I already placed the linocuts of birds on the sky. But then I got inspired making quite a colourful sky. Pink pastel clouds took me away. Well, I couldn't print so many birds on the sky. My plan changed, and now the picture will be Red Sun.

"Ikkunakisat" on tämän valokuvan nimi ja kuvaaja on Jeanne Weyl, 1985. Kaksi kissaa istuu ikkunalaudalla, verhon edessä silmät sirrillään auringossa. Auringon lämmön voi melkein tuntea ihollaan. Kuvassa on todella kauniit harmoniset vaaleat sävyt, joihin kisojen hiukan uneliaat olemukset sopivat hyvin. Valkoista pohjaväriä rikkovat erilaiset mustat viivat: ikkunan karmit, varjot ja verhon laskokset.

The name of this photograph is "Window Cats", and the photo was taken by Jeanne Wyel, 1985. Two cats are sitting on a windowsill, in front of a curtain with their eyes squinting against the sun. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. There are really harmonic pale colours in the picture, and the rather sleepy appearances of the cats fit there fine. The white base colour is broken by several black lines: the window frames, shadows and curtain folds.

KISSAT RAPUILLA: VÄRIÄ / CATS ON STAIRS: COLOUR

Halusin kokeilla "Kissat rapuissa" -linopiirrokseen erivärisiä reunoja. Jotta värin levittämisen suttaamatta onnistuisi, piti keskiosa ja reunus leikata irralleen, jolloin erivärisen musteen levittäminen onnistui. Tällaisia kokeilin nyt: musta keskus ja pronssinvärinen reunus, mustalla paperilla kullanvärinen keskus ja hopeanvärinen reunus ja vielä sama valkoisella paperilla. Tämä viimeinen näyttäisi ehkä hyvältä hopeanvärisessä tai valkoisessa kehyksessä. Kuvan koko on 30 x 30 cm.

I wanted to test the linocut "Cats on Stairs" with different coloured borders. The middle part and the border had to be cut separate so that I could spread colour without making a mess. Now it´s possible to spread different colours on border. I tested now these: a black center and bronze borders, golden center and silver border on a black paper, and silver border and golden center on a white paper. This last one might look OK in a silvery or white frame. The size of the picture is 30 x 30 cm.

KISSAT RAPUILLA / CATS ON STAIRS

Viime vuonna tein linopiirroksen "Ylös alas", jossa kaksi kissaa kulkee rapuissa. Vedos tuntui liian tummalta. Linopiirroksessahan mustien ja valkoisten alueiden tasapaino ja vaihtelu on tärkeä juttu. Tässä työssä se ei toiminut. Siispä linoterä uudelleen käteen ja kaivertamaan lisää. Päätin kaivertaa toisen kissan taustan valkoiseksi. Ja nyt vedos toimii paremmin. Linopiirros on kahtena kappaleena, jotta voisin tehdä reunuksen ja keskiosan eri värisinä, ja sitä kokeilenkin seuraavaksi.

Last year I made a linocut called "Up Down" where two cats are walking on the stairs. The print seemed too dark. All we linocutters know that in lionocuts the balance and variations of the black and white areas is an important matter. In this work it did not function. So I took my lino cutter again in my hand and started to carve some more. I decided to carve the background of the other cat white. And now the linocut works better. This linocut is in two parts, so I could print the border and the middle part with different colour, and that is what I'm gonna try next.

"Kissanaisella" on kuusi kissaa, osa tauluina seinällä. Yksi kissaa makaa jotenkin epämukavassa asennossa naisen sylissä ja toinen vilahtaa ulos avonaisesta ovesta. Värit ja kuviot tässä naivistisessa kuvassa ovat herkulliset. Teos on batikkityö, ja tämän tekniikan taitaja on Maila Vanhatalo. Ihan ällistyttävää, miten tällainen kuva on saatu kankaanpalalle batikkitekniikalla.

"Cat Lady" has six cats, some of them are paintings on the wall. One of the cats is lying somewhat uncomfortably on the lap of the woman, and the other one is sneaking out of the open door. The colours and patterns in this Naïve Art picture are delicious. This is a batik work, and the expert of this technique here is Maila Vanhatalo. It´s quite mind-boggling how this kind of picture has been possible to get on a piece of cloth with batik technique.

Uusi vuosi 2020 on saatu käyntiin ja Korrojen karkelot -kuvaan on nyt vedostettu 33 hyönteistä tai korroa. Tämä on linopiirrosten (kuvan alaosa, kuu ja hyönteiset) ja pastellin (taivas) yhdistelmä. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

The new year 2020 has got started, and I printed 33 insects or bugs on my Bugs Galore picture. This is a combination of linocuts (the bottom part of the picture, moon and bugs) and pastel drawing (the sky).  The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

ART PISPALA 2020 - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Perinteinen Art Pispala -gallerian tammikuinen naivistien näyttely on jälleen avattu, jo 14. kerran tänä vuonna 2020. Omasta seinästäni olen tosi iloinen, linopiirroksia lattiasta kattoon ja pöytä täynnä kortteja, pyyhkeitä, pikatatuointeja ja kelentereita. Näyttely on täynnä naivistisia karkkeja: muutama ennen näkemätön Martti Innanen ja Hannu Riikonen ja uusiakin tekijöitä kuten Iittalastakin tutut Minna Iso-Lähteenmäki, Riitta Kolari ja Kåira. Tässä ensimmäiset puhelimeen tarttuneet kuvat.

The traditional Art Pispala gallery´s January exhibition of Naïve Art is open again, already for the 14th time this year 2020. I´m really glad about my own wall, linocuts from the ceiling to floor, and a table full of cards, tea towels, instant tattoos and calendars. The exhibition is full of Naïve Art candies: a few not earlier seen Marrt Innanen´s paintings and Hannu Riikonen´s sculptures, and also new artists like familiar from Iittala Minna Iso-Lähteenmäki, Riitta Kolari and Kåira.
