OMENAPUU KUKKII / APPLE TREE

Omenapuut kukkivat vasta nyt kylmän kevään jälkeen. Ja ne näyttävät kauniimmilta kuin aikaisemmin. Tässä vanhassa öljymaalauksessani omenapuu on jo aika vanha ja kukkiakaan ei juuri ole - taisin olla kiinnostuneempi punaisesta seinästä.

Apple trees are blossoming just now after a very cold spring. And they look more beautiful than before. In my old oil painting the apple tree is already quite old and there is only some flowers - I  might have been more interested in the red wall.

KIssakorttien kokoelmasta 10 /Cat card collection 10.

Michael Weigallin esseekokoelma "The Cat Empire, The Secret Life of Merlin" ilmestyi vuonna 1988. Esseet käyvät läpi kissojen historian esihistoriasta nykypäivään. Mutta valokuvat ne kirjan tekevät: Weigall on kuvannut kuhunkin aikakauteen puetun ja lavastetun Merlin-kissansa. Mustavalkoinen kissa näyttää suostuneen moiseen puuhaan aika rauhallisesti. Weigall ompeli itse eri aikauksien puvut ja muun tarpeiston. Tässä kortissa Merlin poseeraa diktaattori Josef Stalinin kuvan kanssa. Kuvan nimi on "Moscow Moggy" ja se kuvannee kommunismin aikaa. Jo ennen kirjan julkaisua näitä Merlin-kuvia ilmestyi kortteina, tämäkin  on hankittu jo 1985 Portobello Roadilta.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

Michael Weigell´s collection of essays  "The Cat Empire, The Secret Life of Merlin" was published in 1988. The essays describe the history of cats from prehistoric times to the present day. But the photographs are the real trick: Weigall has photographed his cat Merlin for every period suitably dressed and staged. The black and white cat seems to have agreed to such a thing quite peacefully. Weigall stitched himself all the costumes for the different periods and arranged all the props. In this card Merlin poses with the dictator Joseph Stalin´s picture. The name of the picture is "Moscow Moggy" and it might dexcribe the communistic era. Already before the publication of the book these postcards of Merlin were sold, and I bought this card in 1985 in Portobello Road.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

TARMO PAUNU - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tarmo Paunu (s. 1971) on pispalalainen taiteilija, ihan täältä Tampereen kotikulmilta, mutta minulle ihan tuntematon. Hänet on valittu Taidehallin Vuoden taiteilijaksi, ja näyttely Helsingin Taidehallissa oli siis pakko nähdä. Näyttelyn nimi on "Rakkaudesta" ja jotain naiivia ellei ihan naivistista rakkauden huumaa ja iloa maalauksissa on. Mutta kuvissa on myös jotain outoa: hahmoilla on suuret hätääntyneet silmät, valtava nenä ja kapea ohut suu tai suuri ammottava kita valkoisine hampaineen. Värit ovat loistavia, tummaa vihreää ja hehkuvaa punaista. Kaikki maalausten aiheet eivät avaudu ihan helpolla, paljon symboliikkaa, luonnonmystiikkaa, uskontoa, seksuaalisuutta. Monien taulujen aiheena on maalaustaiteen klassikoiden töitä, Gauguinia, Goyaa, renessanssia, piispoja, kuninkaita tai prinsessoja. Paunu tekee maalauksiaan aika ronskilla otteella, jos tulos ei miellytä, hän maalaa päälle tai hylkää aiheen. Näyttelystä jää lämmin, hiukan naivistinen ja inhimillinen olo.

Yölento / Night Flight

Tarmo Paunu (b. 1971) is an artist from Pispala, Tampere, around the corner from my home, but he is quite unknown to me. He was elected for The Artist of the Year of Taidehalli in Helsinki, so I had to see his exhibition in Helsinki Taidehalli. The name of this exhibition is "Anout Love", and there really is something naive or primitive joy and intoxication of love in his paintings. But there is also something strange in the pictures: the creatures have large frantic eyes, enormous noses and narrow and thin mouths or big gaping jaw with sharp white teeth. The colours are excellent, dark green and glowing red. All the themes of the paintings don´t open easily, there is a lot of symbolism, nature mysticism, religion, sexuality. The subject of many paintings is some classic work, Gauguin, Goya, Renaissance, bishops, kings and princesses. Paunu does his paintings with a rough grip and if the result is not acceptable he paints it over or rejects the subject. The exhibition leaves you with a warm, a bit naive and humane feeling.

Kissakorttien kokoelmasta 10. / Cat Card Collection 10.

"Cowboy Joe from Mexico" on nimeltään Angela Lizonin suuri maalaus (112 x 150 cm). Tämä postikortti on hankittu Royal Academy of Artsin kesänäyttelystä 2010, jossa maalaus hämmästytti koollaan ja tarkalla fotorealismillaan. Angela Lizon on maalannut ison määrän samantapaisia hiukan tyhmän ja vakavan näköisiä kissapotretteja, samoin tympääntyneen näköisiä lasten kasvoja samaan tyyliin. Fotorealistiset maalaukset eläimistä tai ihmisten kasvoista tosi isoina versioina tuntuvat olevan suosittuja. Olen nähnyt esimerkiksi Lontoon National Portrait Galleryssä BP Portrait Award -kilpailussa palkittuja töitä, joissa jokainen ihohuokonen tai karva on kopioitu tarkkaan luultavasti  valokuvasta. Saadakseen jotain käsitystä kuvasta, sitä pitää katsoa metrien päästä.

Angela Lizon´s large (122 x 150 cm) painting is called "Cowboy Joe from Mexico". My postcard was bought at Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2010. The painting amazed  by it´s large size and sharp photorealism. Angela Lizon has painted quite many of these a bit stupid and serious looking cat portraits, and also annoyed-looking children in the same style. You can find more pictures of Angela Lizon´s paintings in her homepage.

Photorealistic paintings of animals and people´s faces as really large versions seem to be very popular. I have seen for example in National Portrait Gallery´s BP Portrait Award competition works, where every pore or hair has been faithfully copied probably from a photograph. Just to get some grasp of the painting you have to look at it from a few metres away..

MUSTARASTAS / BLACKBIRD

Tässä linoleikkauksessa mustarastas laulaa Tahmelan lähteellä Pispalassa. Lähde pysyy auki talvellakin, ja silloin siellä pitää meteliä satapäinen sorsalauma. Sorsat kaikkoavat kesäksi pois muualle pesimään ja mustarastaat sekä öisin satakielet valloittavat lammen reunan isojen puiden latvukset. Vuosisadan alussa pispalalaiset ottivat talousvetensä lähteestä, mutta nykyisin vesi on käyttökelvotonta. Tahmelan lähteen ympärille on muodostunut eräänlainen pyhä lehtomainen keidas.

Tämä on jo kymmenes samaan malliin tehty linoleikkaus: luontomaisemaa yläosa ja yksityiskohta kuvan alareunassa. Saa nähdä, tuleeko näitä vielä lisää kesän aikana.

In this linocut a blackbird is singing by the Tahmela fresh water spring in Pispala, Tampere. The spring remains open through the winter and then there brawls at least about hundred ducks. The ducks vanish for the summer to nest somewhere else and the blackbirds and at night also the nightingales conquer the top branches of the big trees by the spring.The people of Pispala suburb took  their drinking water from this fresh water spring at the beginning of the century but now the water is unusable. There is still a kind of sacred grove-like oasis by the Tahmela spring.

This is already tenth of these linocuts by the same shape: a nature scene at the top part and a detail at the bottom part of the picture. It remains to be seen if there will be more of these during the summer.

ALPO

Veljeni Alpo on aikamoinen ulkoilmatyyppi. Hän pitää veneistä ja kalastamisesta ja asuu meren rannalla. Hänen vanhassa muotokuvassaan yritin kuvata tätä ulkoilmatunnelmaa: paljon sinistä ja valkoista, taivasta ja pilviä. Ja tietenkin rohkeaa ja hyvin suomalaista veljeäni.

My brother Alpo is a typical outdoor man. He likes boats and fishing and lives by the sea. In his old portrait I tried to describe this outdoor-feeling: lots of blue and white, sky and clouds. And of course my brave and  very Finnish brother.

"Kuka laittoi kaikki nuo kissat lasilaatikoihin?" on nimeltään tämä vuonna 1987 British Museumista hankittu kortti. Kortin kuva on Corinne Pearlmanin kuvitusta Sally Craddockin kirjaan "Ottoline at the British Museum" vuodelta 1987. Kortissa tunnelma on kevyt ja hiukan humoristinen. Tekniikka lienee vesiväri. Mieleeni muistui valokuva samasta paikasta British Museumissa parin vuoden takaa. Tunnelma oli kuuma, ahdas ja melkein pimeä. Kissojen muumioissa oli silti jotain samaa, melkein kuin ne olisivat olleet eläviä kissoja.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

"Who put all those cats into glass boxes?" is the name of this postcard that I purchased in 1987 from the British Museum. The picture of this card is Corinne Pearlman´s illustration to Sally Craddock´s book "Ottoline at the British Museum" from 1987. The atmosphere in this card is light and a bit humorous. The technique seems to be watercolour. I recalled a photograph from the same spot in the British Museum a couple of years back. The atmosphere was hot, cramped and almost dark. The cat mummies were still like in the postcard, almost like living cats.

DYYNEILLÄ / ON THE DUNES

Gran Kanarian dyynit on aiheena tässä linoleikkauksessa. Tuulen muovaamat jäljet hiekassa ja valtameren rannalla kulkevat auringonpalvojat ovat kuvan yläosassa. Alaosassa on rapu. 

Nyt saa Kanaria vähäksi aikaa unohtua, sillä Suomeenkin on tulossa kesä!

The dunes of Gran Canaria are the subject of this linocut. The traces on the sand shaped by the wind and the sunbathers walking on the ocean shore are on the top side of this picture. A crab is on the bottom.

 Now I will forget the Canary Islands for a while, because the summer will be coming even to Finland!

TOINEN KISSA DYYNEILLÄ / ANOTHER CAT ON THE DUNES

Tein toisen version kissasta dyyneillä. Tämä on hiukan enemmän hiekanvärinen kun edellinen oli aika punertava. Tausta on pastellipiirros ja kissa sekä simpukka linoleikkauksia.

I made another version of Cat on the Dunes. This is a bit more sand coloured when the first one was more reddish. The background is pastel drawing and the cat  & the seashell are linocuts.

Franz Marcin maaalaus "Kolme kissaa" vuodelta 1913 on hiukan piilokuva. Mustavalkoinen kissa potkaisee oikealla olevaa keltaraitaista kissaa. Takana olevaa isoa punaista kissaa ei ehkä heti huomaa. Tässä kuvassa on kissamaista liikettä ja vauhtia. Postikortti on ostettu Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa Tampereella joku aika sitten olleesta erinomaisesta Ekspressionistit-näyttelystä.

Franz Marc´s painting " Three Cats" from 1913 is a bit of a puzzle. The black and white cat kicks at the yellow striped cat on the right. Perhaps you do not notice the large red  cat at the back. There is a lot of movement and speed  in this picture. I bought this postcard at the excellent Expressionists -exhibition in Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere last year.

KISSA DYYNEILLÄ / CAT ON THE DUNES

Kanaria-aihe kiehtoo edelleen. Nyt kokeilin pastellin ja linoleikkauksen yhdistämistä. Kuvassa kissa on dyyneillä ja taivaanrannassa kulkee joukko auringosta nauttijoita. Tausta on tehty pastelliliiduilla ja kissa sekä yksi simpukka ovat linoleikkauksia. Tässä tekniikassa se pieni vaara, että linoleikkausten vedostus meneekin pilalle ja silloin koko työ on pilalla.

Canary Island as a subject enthralls me still. Now I tried to combine linocuts and pastel drawing. In this picture a cat is on the dunes and on the horizon you can see a bunch of sunbathers walking. The background was done with pastel chalks,  the cat and one seashell are linocuts. There is one small danger in this technique - if the pulling of linocuts goes wrong, the whole picture is gone.
