Tämä kissakortti on parhaimmillaan Suomen pimeimpänä vuodenaikana. Parikymmentä kissaa on leikattu kuvioksi ympyrään hämähäkin seittiä muistuttavalle taustalle. Erilaiset valot, kynttilä, harvinainen aurinko ja sähkölamput heijastavat kuvion kortin valkoiselle takasivulle, seinään tai muualle taustaan. Pitsimäinen ja hento kuvio on kaunis vääntyessään soikioksi tai vinoksi, jolloin kissat tuntuvat hiipivän tai vaanivan verkossaan. Laserleikatun kuvan tekijäksi mainitaan Ge Feng (s. 1967), Lontooseen muuttanut kiinalainen.

This cat card is at its best in the darkest time of the year in Finland. About twenty cats have been cut to a pattern in a circle on a background resembling a cobweb. Different lights, candles, a rare sun and electric lights are reflecting the pattern on the white back page, wall or some other background. The lacy, delicate pattern is beautiful when it is warping into an ellipse or slanting form, so that the cats seem to be creeping or prowling in their net. Ge Feng (b. 1967), Chinese, to London moved artist is mentioned as the maker of this laser cut picture.

Olen vienyt linopiirroksieni kuvia Instagramiin tunnuksella @linokissa, helppoa ja nopeaa. Instagram on kätevä tapa saada hiukan palautetta töistä, mistä pidetään ja mistä taas ei. @linokissaa seuraa yli tuhat henkilöä, ja aika moni heistä on graafikkoja tai linopiirrosten tekijöitä. Itse seuraan  myös lähes tuhatta linopiirtäjää. Aikamoinen linopiirtäjien yhteisö ympäri maapalloa! Vuoden lopulla voi tehdä hauskan yhteenvedon: yhdeksän eniten tykkäyksiä saanutta postausta. Olen niin iloinen tämän vuoden tykätyimmistä eli #bestnine2018 - tuloksesta. Oikeastaan siinä on kaksi vuoden 2018 keskeistä asiaa: Iittalan naivistinen yhteisnäyttely ja edelleen vireillä oleva linopiirrosten sarja Pispalan taloja ja järveä.

I have posted pictures of my linocut on Instagram as @linokissa, easy and quick. Instagram is a handy way to get some feedback of your works, which are liked and which again not. Over a thousand people are following @linokissa, and quite a lot of them are graphic artists or linocutters. I follow myself also almost thousand other linocutters. Quite a community of linocutters from all over the world! At the end of the year you can make a fun summary: nine most liked posts. I´m so glad of my nine best liked posts this year i.e. #bestnine2018 results. Really there are two of the year 2018´s essential topics: the Naïve art group exhibition in Iittala and still ongoing series of linocuts of Pispala houses and lake.

GELLI-VEDOSTUSTA / GELLI PRINTING

Joku aika sitten hankin Gelli -levyn, jota mainostettiin helppona tapana tehdä monoprinttejä. Päätin kokeilla Gelli -levyä tekemällä taustoja erikokoisille korento- ja perhoslinopiirroksilleni. Ensin tein sopivan kokoisia paperinpaloja aika paksusta paperista; 9 x 9 cm, 16 x 16 cm ja 20 x 20 cm. Sitten leikkasin muovikalvosta sapluunat, jotka peittivät puolisen senttiä papereiden reunoista sekä korentojen ja perhosten muotoiset muovisapluunat. Levitin telalla linoväriä Gelli-levylle. laitoin värin päälle sapluunat ja painoin paperin värin päälle. Gelli -levy toisti hienosti kuvioita vaikkapa pitsistä tai kasveista. Vedostaminen oli todella hauskaa ja innostavaa. Huomasin pitäväni enemmän ns. haamuvedoksista, joissa värit tai muodot ovat hennompia. Seuraava vaihe on sitten vedostaa linopiirroksia korennoista ja perhosista näille värillisille pohjille eli monoprinteille. Jokainen on erilainen, ja mielikuvitus jo lähtee liikkeelle: muutakin väriä voi käyttää kuin mustaa, kimalletta ehkä osassa ja joissakin vedoksissa voi ennen linopiirroksen vedostusta värittää musteella siipien pohjallekin väriä. Nyt nämä kymmenet monoprinttipohjat kuivuvat kylpyhuoneessa neljällä pahvista kyhätyllä hyllyllä

I bought some time ago a Gelli plate, which was advertised as an easy way to make monoprints. I decided to prove Gelli plate and make backgrounds for my different sized linocuts of dragonflies and butterflies. First I made right sizes pieces of quite thick paper:  9 x 9 cm, 16 x 16 cm and 20 x 20 cm. Then I cut stencils of pieces of plastic sheet so that they covered just about half centimeters of the borders of the papers, and also stencils for butterflies and dragonflies. I applied linocolour with a roller on the Gelli plate, put on the stencils and pressed on top the paper. Gelli plate transferred fine the colour for instance of a piece of lace or plants. The printing was really fun and inspiring. I noticed that I liked mpost the so called shadow prints, where the colours and shapes are more fragile. The next step is then to print the linocuts of butterflies and dragonflies on these coloured backgrounds or monoprints. Each one is different, and my imagination is already on the move: perhaps I can use other colours than black to prints linos, maybe glitter, and on some cases I could colour the wings with ink before printing.Now these monoprints are drying in my bathroom on four shelves made of cardboard.

Kangasalalaisen Maaretta Murasen joulukortti näyttää vanhalta, mutta se on aika uusi. Ostin kortin keväällä Kangasalan lepokodista, jossa aika tuntui pysähtyneen. Kuvassa oleva koristeellinen tuoli voisi olla lepokodista, ja voihan siellä joulupukkikin viettää vapaa-aikaansa. Pieni pukki on noussut tuolille koristamaan joulukuusta ja kissa tapansa mukaan yrittää purkaa koristeita. Kuvan värit ovat kauniisti vanhahtavat.

This Christmas card by Maaretta Muranen from Kangasala looks old, but it´s quite new. I bought the card last Spring at Kangasalan lepokoti (Kangasala Resr Home), where the time seemed to have stopped. The decorative chair on the card could be one of the Rest Home, and even the Father Christmas could spend his free time there. The small Father Christmas has stepped on the chair decorating the Christmas tree, and the cat typical for her is trying to tear down the decorations. The colours of the picture are beautifully old fashioned.

Nämä kolme pientä nallea ovat osa Kimmo Miettisen tekstiin pohjautuvaa lastenkirjan kuvitusta. Nämä ovat pienenpieniä, vain alle 10 cm korkeita linopiirroksia.

These three small teddy bears are part of the illustration for a children´s book based on the test by Kimmo Miettinen. These are tiny, only under 10 cm high.

MENOPAUSSI - NÄYTTELY / MENOPAUSE EXHIBITION

Galleria Koppelossa Tampereella on Apropoo-työryhmän näyttely Menopaussi. Työryhmään kuuluvat Juha Isometsä, Pirkko Koskinen ja Tuija Virta. Heidän työnsä ovat metalligrafiikkaa, kuivaneulaa, mezzotintoa ja myös chine colléta. Yhteistä on myös, että työt ovat pieniä, vaativat tarkastelua läheltä, sillä yksityiskohtia on paljon. Naisten grafiikassa näkyy enemmän luontoaiheita, kasveja, eläimiä ja maisemia. Mutta eniten minua viehättivät Juha Isometsän töiden hienot ja herkät värisävyt, hento jälki ja huumorikin. Hänen aiheinaan ovat ihmiset ja kaikenlaiset kotoiset esineet, harjat, meisselit, kengät ja lelut kuten näyttelyjulisteessa. Näyttelyssä oli myynnissä myös aivan ihana pieni kirja: Löytöretkellä, Pirjo Kaupin runoja ja Juha Isometsän grafiikkaa.

There is Menopause exhibition by Apropoo group at Gallery Koppelo in Tampere. Apropoo consist of Juha Isometsä, Pirkko Koskinen and Tuija Virta. Their works are metal graphics, dry point, mezzotint and also chine collé. The works are also small, require that you look at them closely, because there are a lot of details. Graphics by women are depicting more subjects from the nature, plants, animals and landscapes. But I was more attracted by delicate and subtle hues, tender traces and even some humour in Juha Isometsä´s graphics. His subjects are people and all kind of domestic objects, brushes, screw drivers, shoes and toys like on the poster of the exhibition. There was on sale at the exhibition a quite wonderful small book: Löytöretkellä (Voyage of Discovery), poems by Pirjo Kauppi and graphics by Juha Isometsä.

Englantilainen Ruskin Spear (1911-1990) on tunnettu muotokuvistaan, ja eikös vaan ole tämä kissakuvakin oikea potretti! Kissalla on luonnetta, silmät ovat pelästyneet, mutta jos ärsytät voit saada raapaisun. Onko taiteilija häirinnyt kissan päiväunia laatikossa? Öljyvärimaalauksen värit ovat ihanat: ruskeaa eri sävyissä melkein koko kuva, palanen ruusukuvioista verhoa ja molemmissa alakulmissa palaset syvää vihreää.

English Ruskin Spear (1911-1990) is a well.known portraitist, and this picture is a great example of a cat portrait! The cat has got some character, the eyes are frightened, but if you irritate her you could get a scratching. Has the artist disturbed the cat´s nap in the box? The colours of the oil painting are wonderful, brown in different hues almost on the entire surface of the picture, a piece of curtain with a rose pattern, and pieces of deep green on both lower corners.

Kimmo Miettinen kävi viime kesänä Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyssä ja näki siellä linopiirroksiani. Hän ehdotti, että tekisin kuvituksen hänen lastenkirjatekstiinsä pienestä Aija-tytöstä, joka pelkää sänkynsä alla olevaa mörköä. Nyt tämä kuvitus on jo saanut hiukan muotoaan. Tässä on ensimmäinen linopiirros, ensimmäiselle sivun kuva Aija-tytöstä, jolla on raitainen yöpaita. Tämä on tosi pieni linopiirros: 8 x 5 cm.

Kimmo Miettinen visited last summer the Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition and saw there my linocuts. He suggested that I made illustration for his children´s book about a small girl Aija who is afraid of a monster under her bed. Now this illustration has got some shape. Here is the first linocut for the first page about the girl Aija who is wearing a striped shirt. This a really tiny linocut: 8 x 5 cm.

Tämä on aika arvoituksellinen kuva. Tekijäksi mainitaan L.A De Ribas ja tekoajaksi 1894. Tekniikaksi mainitaan kromolitografia eli mutkikas graafinen menetelmä, jossa jokainen väri painetaan eri kivilaatalta tarkkaan asemoituna. Tämä kortin kuva on siis ollut ehkä julisteen kokoinen painokuva, josta kortti on kopioitu myöhemmin (1987). Kuvan hieno eri värit erottava painojälki on kuvassa näkyvissä pieninä pisteinä kun tarkkaan katsoo. Mutta millainen on ollut alkuperäinen kuva, maalaus vai jonkinlainen kollaasi? Kuvassa valkoisiin pitkiin univormuihin pukeutunut kissa-armeija, Rattown Tigers (Rottakaupungin Tiikerit) marssii kadulla Cafe Angoran ohi. Tapahtuuko tämä jossain Intiassa? Kaikki kissa-armeijan "henkilöt" ovat tuiman näköisiä kissoja ihmisvaatteissa, aseet tanassa, paitsi etummaisena astelevalla mustalla kissalla on puuämpärillinen maitoa.

This is quite a puzzling picture. L.A De Ribas is mentioned as the artist and the year is 1894. Chromolithograph is the technique and this a very complicated one: every colour has been printed with a separate stone plate with an accurate positioning. This card might have originally been a poster sized print and the card has been copied from it later (1987). The fine imprint of the original picture separating different colours with tiny dots you can see if you look closely. But how did the original picture look like, was it a painting or some kind of collage? In the picture a car army, Rattown Tigers, wearing long white uniforms is marching on the street by Cafe Angora. Is this happening somewhere in India? All the "persons" of the cat army are stern looking cats in human clothes, armed with guns and spears, except the black cat marching in the front carrying a wooden bucket of milk.

KISSA KIRJAHYLLYSSÄ / CAT IN A BOOK SHELF

Kissat tuntevat olevansa turvassa kun ne sulloutuvat ahtaisiin tiloihin, laatikoihin, koloihin tai kuten tässä kirjahyllyyn. Uskoisin, että kissat pitävät myös vanhojen kirjojen hajusta. Tämä on lisäys sarjaani pieniä (10 x 15 cm) linopiirroksia kissoista, välipaloja isompien töiden välissä. Ihan vain huvin vuoksi!

Cats seem to feel secure when they are squeezing themselves into tight spaces, boxes, holes or like here into a book shelf. I would believe that the cats also like the smell of old books. This one is an addition to my series of small (10 x 15 cm) linocuts of cats, nibbles between bigger pictures. Just for fun!

KISSA VIULUKOTELOSSA / CAT IN A VIOLIN CASE

Näitä pieniä kissalinoja (10 x 15 cm) on välillä kiva tehdä. Ne ovat kuin lyhyitä lauluja, joita joutessaan hyräilee. Tässä linopiirroksessa kissa on mennyt pitkälleen viulukoteloon, joka varmaan tuntuu mukavalta, samettiselta. Kissa on muotoutunut kotelon mukaan melkein viuluksi.

It´s nice to carve these small (10 x 15 cm) linocats every now and then. They are like short songs which you hum in between. In this linocut the cat has lied down in a violin case, which must feel comfy, velvety. The cat has almost taken the shape of a violin according the case. 

IITTALAN TALVI / WINTER IN IITTALA

Iittalan talvinäyttely on nyt runsas: Naivismin klassikot alakerran kolmessa huoneessa on upea kattaus Gallupin kokoelmista, yläkerrassa on nykynaivismia ja alakerrassa Taidelainaamo sekä mahtava Aulashop, jossa muiden joukossa vilahteli omiakin linopiirroksia, kortteja, kalenteria, t-paitoja ja keittiöpyyhkeitä. Viime lauantaina vietettiin Joulukorttipäivää ja meitä oli paikalla muutama naivisti kuten Kikka Nyrén ja Pirkko Valtonen-Pullinen, Minna Lehväslaiho ja Terho Peltoniemi lisäkseni. Tapasin myös henkilön, joka tunsi taidettani ja juttelimme värien lisääntymisestä linopiirroksissa - huippuhetki!

Winter exhibition in Iittala is now plentiful. There is The Classic Naivists exhibition from the collection of Gallup in three rooms downstairs, upstairs is an exhibition of contemporary Naïve art, a Lending Collection in one room downstairs and the great Lobby Shop where I spotted among other merchandise my linocuts, cards, calendars, tea towels and t-shirts. Last Saturday we were celebrating The Christmas Card Day, and there were present a few artists like Kikka Nyrén, Pirkko Pullinen-Valtonen, Minna Lehväslaiho and Terho Peltoniemi in  addition to me. I also met a person who knew my art and we talked about the colour emerging in linocuts - just the peak moment!

Hopeanharmaatukkainen muotisuunnittelija Carl Lagerfeldt pitää sylissään valkoista kissaa. Hansikkaat peittävät ryppyiset kädet ja korkea kaulus kaulan. Aurinkolasien taakse on hyvä piilottaa väsyneet silmät. Lagerfeldt esiintyi jopa muotinäytöksissä kissa sylissään. Kuvan tekijä lienee Rosa Williams, vaikkei sitä kortissa mainitakaan. Tällainen pelkistetty poptaide sopii kuvaan muistuttamaan Andy Warholin tyylistä.

Silver gray-haired fashion designer Karl Lagerfeldt is cuddling a white cat. The gloves are covering wrinkly hands and the high collar the neck. Its handy to hide tired eyes behind sunglasses. Lagerfeldt used to appear even in fashion shows with a cat in his lap. The artist might be Rosa Williams, even though it is not mentioned on the card. This kind of plain and bare pop art fits fine with this picture reminding of the style of Andy Warhol.

Tällä kirjalla on todella osuva nimi "Kaiverrettua valoa" ("Carved Light"). Skotlantilainen Bryan Angus (s. 1959) kaivertaa linopiirroksia kotiseudultaan Banffshiren rannikolta, mutta myös mm. Istanbulista tai mielikuvituksellisista maisemista. Hän aloitti grafiikan teon vasta viisikymppisenä ja on erikoistunut brittien suosimaan reduction (vähennys) -tekniikkaan. Angus kutsuu tätä työtapaa itsemurha-tekniikaksi. Linolevylle kaiverretaan ensin vain valkoisiksi jäävät alueet, vedostetaan tämä "pohja" ja sitten kaiverretaan haluttu määrä lisävärejä ja viimeiseksi levylle jää vedostettavaksi vain tummin väri. Paluuta aikaisempiin vaiheisiin ei ole. Näissä Bryan Anguksen linopiirroksissa tekniikan lisäksi ihailen mestarillista kaiverrusjälkeä: erilaisin kuvion toteutettuja pintoja, puuta, kiviä, vettä, ruohikkoa, puita ja erityisesti pilviä ja taivasta. Kirjassa on havainnollisesti kuvattu reduction- tekniikan eri vaiheet luonnosten tekemisestä alkaen. Valo  kirjaimellisesti kaiverretaan linolevyltä esiin. Tyylikäs kirja!

Kaiverrusjälkeä linolevyllä / Markings of the carving on a lino plate

This book has really a apt name "Carved Light". Scottish Bryan Angus carves linocuts of his home district Banffshire Coast, but also of Istanbul and some imaginary landscapes. He started to make graphic art in late 2012 and specialized in reduction technique, which is very popular in Britain. Angus calls this technique suicide method. First only the parts that remain white are carved on the lino plate, this "base" is then printed and then a desired amount of additional colours are carved, and at the end there will be only the darkest colour on the lino plate. There is no return to the earlier stages. In these linocuts by Bryan Angus I admire in addition to the brilliant technique the masterly markings of the carving: so many different patterns depicting different surfaces, wood, stone, water, grass, trees and especially clouds and sky. The several stages of the reduction technique beginning with sketching are graphically illustrated in this book, the light is literally carved out on a lino plate. Such a stylish book!

LONTOON KATOT / LONDON ROOFS

Viime Lontoon matkalla hotellihuoneesta oli mahtava näköala yli Lontoon kattojen. Näin heti maiseman mielessäni linopiirroksena, ja nyt sellaisen teinkin. Kattotiiliä, ikkunoita ja erilaisia talojen muodostamia kuvioita oli hauska kaivertaa. Taivaan rajassa oleva kirkon kupoli ja uusi korkea kerrostalo ovat toistensa vastakohtia. Lontoolle tyypilliset keraamiset savupiiput ovat kiehtovia. Kuva on 20 x 30 cm kokoinen, täynnä yksityiskohtia.

Last time visiting London there was a stunning view from the window of the hotel room over the roofs of London. I instantly saw this landscape in my mind as a linocut, and now I even made one. It was really fun to carve roof tiles, windows and different patterns formed by the houses. The cupola of a church and a modern high rise building are opposites on the horizon. The ceramic chimneys typical for London are intriguing. The picture is sized 20 x 30 cm and full of details.

Kissa tuolilla (Cat on a Chair) on englantilaisen Lucy Willisin maalaus. Kirkas talvinen valo tulvii ikkunasta. Kissa on kääntynyt auringonvaloon ja lämpimään päin. Valo luo kauniin hohtavan kehyksen kissan ympärille ja tuolille. Tuolin varjo heijastuu lattialle kuin tyynen veden päälle.

Cat on a Chair is painted by English Lucy Willis. The bright wintry light is streaming from the window. The cat has turned to the sun light and warmth. The light crates a beautiful halo around the cat and on the the chair. The shadow of the chair is reflecting on the floor like on a still water. 

INTERIN JOULUPUOTI / INTERI´S CHRISTMAS SHOP

Interin (Tampereen taideteollisuusyhdistyksen) joulupuoti aukeaa taas. Vanhassa Runebergin mökissä Haiharassa on myynnissä monenlaista käsin tehtyä lahjatavaraa: lasia, puuta, keramiikkaa, kangasta, kudottua tai painettua. Tänä vuonna Runebergin mökissä on muutama oma linopiirrokseni, paljon kortteja, kalentereita 2019, loput pikatatuoinnit ja neljä erilaista keittiöpyyhettä. Kun vein tavaroita joulukauppaan, niitä oli vastaanottamassa tunnelmallisessa hirsitalossa Riitta Malinen Interistä. Takassa jo odottivat joulua Margit Hakasen keramiikkahahmot.

Interi's (Arts and Crafts Society of Tampere) Christmas shop is opening again. In the old Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara there are on sale many kind of things for gifts: glass, wooden works, ceramics, fabric, knitted or printed. This year in the Runeberg´s Cottage there are a couple of my linoprints, a lot of cards, 2019 calendars, all the remaining instant tattoos and four different models of tea towels. When I took my wares to the Christmas shop, there was Riitta Malinen from Interi receiving them in this atmospheric log house. Margit Hakanen´s ceramic figures were already waiting for Christmas in the fireplace.
