KISSA LEIKKII SIMPUKALLA / CAT PLAYING WITH A SEASHELL

Sarjani linoleikkauksista, joissa kissa leikki jollakin esineellä jatkuu vain. Nyt kissa pyörittelee käpälissään simpukankuorta. Tämäkin on kaksiosainen linoleikkaus.

************
My series of a cat playing with an object still continues. Now the cat is rolling in her paws a seashell. This is also a two-part linocut.

PUNAINEN KIRJA / RED BOOK

Punaisena vedostettu kirja tuo kuvaan iloa. Tämä on kaksiosainen linoleikkaus.

In this version of my linocut of a cat playing with a red book. I printed earlier the same picture totally black, but it was quite dark. The book printed red brings some joy to the picture. This is a two-part linocut.

Kissakortti: 143 / Cat Card: 143

Happy Easter! This 1950´s card has sugary colours and flowers. Not any typical Finnish Easter card, no pussy willows, no eggs, but at least a couple daffodils. There is even a signing: C. Vive.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

KISSA LEIKKII KIRJALLA / CAT PLAYING WITH A BOOK

Kirjan nimi on: Maailman kaikki kissat. Tämä on kaksiosainen linoleikkaus.

Perhaps cats can not read, but they might play with a book. The book opens funnily in the air, but it's not easy to get a grip of it. The book is called: All the Cats of the World.  This is a two-part linocut.

KAKSIN: osa 2 / TOGETHER: Part Two

Maalasin ensimmäisen kerroksen öljyväriä Kaksin-kuvaan. Nurmikon keltaiset kukat katosivat, mutta taivas alkaa näyttää sopivalta. Kissojen naamat ovat silti ihan liian pienet. Niille pitää nyt tehdä jotain.

***************
I painted the first coat of oil paint on Together painting. The yellow flowers on the grass vanished, but the sky starts to look suitable. Still, the faces of the cats are too small. I have to do something about it.

KUPPIKISSA / CUP CAT

Kokeilu erilaisilla Kissa leikkii... -aiheilla jatkuu. Nyt vuorossa oli sinikuvioinen kiinalainen kuppi. Vedostin kupin eri asennoissa. Toisessa versiossa vasempaan yläkulmaan jäi aukko, johon vedostin pienen koppakuoriaisen. Kuva on tehty kahdesta tai kolmesta erillisestä linoleikkauksesta.

***************
My experiment with the theme of  Cat Playing With... continues. Now I trifled with a blue patterned Chinese cup. I pulled the cup in different positions. In the other version there was left a blank space in the upper left corner, so I printed there a small beetle. This picture was made of two or three separate linocuts.

Kissakortti:142 / Cat Card: 142

Tämä kortti on kuva keraamisesta laatasta, jonka on tehnyt englantilainen Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52). Kuvassa on kolme Englannin vaakunan leijonaa keltaisina punertavalla pohjalla. Leijonat näyttävät hiukan ilkikurisilta. Pugin oli tunnettu erityisesti uusgottilaisen tyylin arkkitehtina.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

This card is a picture of a ceramic tile, made by English Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52). There are three yellow heraldic English lions on a reddish base. The lions look a bit roguish. Pugin was known especially as a Gothic architect.

SASA MARINKOV -KIRJA / BOOK

Sasa Marinkov's Picture Book
The QuinceTrees Press
10,5 x 14,5 cm, 16 sivua / pages
Osassa kuvista on raaputtamalla saatu aikaan harmaan sävyjä. Marinkovin kotisivujen perusteella hän on tehnyt enemmän suurikokoisia puupiirroksia, joiden tyyli on sama kuin pienemmissä linoleikkauksissa.

**************
The tiny booklet of English Sasa Marinkov's (b. 1949) linocuts was a find from Bankside Galleryin London. Marinkov's style is really reduced, and she can finely use the black surface. Her linocuts are landscapes and city scenes, and there seems to be nothing too much or too little. In some pictures she has probably scratched the lino to achieve grey tones. According to Marinkov's home pages she has made mainly large wood engravings, and they are the same style as her linocuts.

Easter is coming again, and that's why this cat is playing with an Easter egg. And this a blue Fabergé egg. I wonder if it stays unbroken?

Kissakortti: 141 / Cat Card: 141

Englantilaisen Mary Feddenin (1915-2012) öljymaalauksen nimi on Tabby. KIssa on kaapin päällä kotoisen tuntuisesti, mutta muut asiat kuvassa ovatkin hiukan surrealistisia. Takana on maisema rannalta. Vai onko kuva rannasta vain tapetti? Hyllyillä on monenlaisia herkullisen värisiä hedelmiä, eikä perspektiivistä ole tietoakaan.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

English Mary Fedden's  (1915-2012)  oil painting is called Tabby. The cat is on the cupboard seeming homely, but the other things in this picture are a bit surrealistic. In the background there is a scene of a coast. Or is the picture of the beach only a wall paper? On the shelves there are many deliciously coloured fruits, and there no inkling of a perspective.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

PERFORMING FOR THE CAMERA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Performing for the Camera (Kameralle esiintyminen) on Tate Modernin iso valokuvanäyttely Lontoossa.

Martin Parr
Performing for the Camera is an extensive exhibition in Tate Modern, London. This exhibition really makes you think, and you have to concentrate on the photos with some thought. This is not quite easy, because the exhibition is rambling, and the photos are very different-sized. On one wall Ai Weiwei breaks a vase in three huge photos, and on another wall there are tens of Martin Parr's funny little self portraits all in different-sized and shaped frames. The exhibition is divided into informative but mind-bending parts: Documenting Performance (Mostly documenting of older performances. Harry Shunk's jumps to a void are interestingly depicted also how the pictures were staged.), Staging / Collaboration (art made together by the photographer and a model, performing like authors, for example  Eikoh Hosoe & Tatsumi Hijikata), Photographic Actions (an artist might paint his/her own body, and the photographer takes the pictures, for example Erwin Wurm, Andy Warhol), Performing Icons (playing with self portraits, masking oneself to different roles and role playing, for example Cindy Sherman), Public Relations (making self portraits as posters or advertisements, for example Jeff Koons), Self / Portrait (soul-searching or self-expression, for example Martin  Parr and Robert Mapplethorpe), Performing Real Life (photographing your own living environment, for example Keith Arnatt's garden photos). It's quite baffling to make comparisons between these photos and the present boom to take selfies and the never ending desire to perform something else than yourself.

**********
Saul Leiter's (1923-2013) photography exhibition in The Photographers' Gallery in London is comprehensive and fascinating. He
photographed on the streets apparently thousands of pictures quite randomly, but there are gems in his photos. Leiter revolutionized colour photography with his strong coloured shapes, which were the key elements in pictures. The photo might seem to be black and white, but there is a green traffic light and when you watch it closely there is even a reddish car in the background. The traffic light is not hand coloured. Leiter was also a fashion photographer and he regarded himself also as a painter. He painted on his photos, usually pictures of women, with thick paint and made so a painting from a photo.

In the Print Sales Gallery beside the shop there are Viennese Wolfgang Suschitzky's (b. 1912) suolful London-themed photographs, foggy street, Banks of Thames, and ruins after the Second World War .

BRITISH MUSEUM : PRINTS AND DRAWINGS GALLERY

British Museumin kiinnostavin huone on numero 90: Painokuvien ja piirustusten galleria (Prints and Drawings Gallery).

************
Francis Towne
British Museum's most interesting room is number 90: Prints and Drawings Gallery. Despite its name I saw there watercolour paintings. Francis Towne's (1739-1816) watercolours of Rome were beautiful, romantic, airy and totally without people. The views might be quite the same nowadays, if there were no tourists. Towne's paintings had a serene, meditative feeling, which reminded an idealized atmosphere of the Ancient Greece and Rome.

In the lobby of Room 90 there are often interesting small graphics exhibitions - even when I visited a couple of days ago. David Oxtoby's (s. 1938) etchings of rock music legends, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Traffic and their contemporaries were multi-toned and powerful. Many of the etchings were bordered narrow and high. Behind these etchings there must have been photographs, but the pictures were still no copies, they had their own style and strength.

THE COURTAULD GALLERY: BRUEGEL

Lontoossa käydessä on ihan pakko poiketa Courtauld-galleriassa. Siellä on yleensä parikin pientä mielenkiintoista näyttelyä.

***********
When in London, it is almost inevetitable to visit The Courtauld Gallery. Usually there are a couple of small interesting exhibitions. Now there were Pieter Bruegel the Elder's (1525-1569) oil paintings made in grisaille technique and copies of these works. Painting only with gray colour is called grisaille, which enhances the shapes, shadows and light of the subject. Bruegel's painting Woman Taken in Adultery is a strange subject, but the painting was tuneful. Especially the crouching figure on the right is typical for Bruegel. After Bruegel's death numerous precise copies were made from this grisaille paintings, particularly in various graphic techniques which suits fine copying these gray paintings.  Also colourful oil painting were made as copies, but these are quite far from the masterly depiction of groups of people in Bruegel's paintings.

BOTTICELLI REIMAGINED - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Botticelli Reimagined (Uudelleen löydetty Botticelli) Victoria & Albert -museossa Lontoossa on jännittävä näyttely. Aineisto on laitettu esille käänteisessä kronologisessa järjestyksessä. René Magritten (1898-1967) on kopioinut maalauksessaan miehen selkään Botticellin Kevät-hahmon. Seuraavaksi tutustutaan Botticellin 1800-luvulla löytäneisiin taidesuuntauksiin, etenkin prerafaeliitteihin. Botticelli oli lähes unohdettuna 300 vuotta, kunnes hänen sulavat henkilöhahmonsa, uskonnolliset maalauksensa ja harmoniset värinsä löydettiin uudelleen. Prerafaeliittien joukossa aika moni nainenkin sai innoitusta Botticellista. Eniten on uskonnollisia töitä Botticellin Savonarola-vaikutteiden takia. Hienosti on kuvattu nuoren miehen kuvassa kaikille teini-ikäisille tyypillinen uhmakkuus.
*
Andy Warhol
Samaan aikaan The Courtauld Galleryssa on Botticellin pergamenttipaperille tekemiä piirustuksia Danten Jumalaiseen näytelmään.

***************
Botticelli Reimagined in Victoria & Albert Museum in London  is an exciting exhibition. The material is presented in a revised chronological order. At first there are the newest art works, adverts, videos, objects, and fashion, which mostly make use of Botticelli's Venus and Spring themes. Botticelli's paintings' sensual faces and hair flowing wildly in the wind have inspired painters from Andy Warhol (1928-1987) to Yin Xin (s. 1959).  René Magritten (1898-1967) has copied Botticelli's Spring figure on the back of a man in his painting. Next the viewer is introduced to the art movement of the 1800's, mainly the Pre-Raphaelites. Botticelli was almost forgotten for 300 years, untill the Pre-Raphaelites found again his slender figures, religious paintings and harmonious colours. Among the Pre-Raphaelites quite many women were inspired by Botticelli. In Eleanor Fortesque-Brickdale's (1871-1945) painting Botticelli in a red hat is meeting women wanting to model perhaps for paintings like Venus or Spring or angels. In the last rooms there are the works of Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) and his studio and followers. There are a lot of religious subjects for the sake of Botticelli's devotion to Savonarola. Even Jesus has a long blond flowing hair and beautiful, gentle face. The fingers and toes are bending and long. The baby Jesus and Virgin Mary are portrayed mostly affectionately cheek to cheek. The universal self-will of an adolescent has finely depicted in a portrait of a young man.
*
Yin Xin
At the same time in the Courtauld Gallery there are Botticelli's drawing to Dante's La Divina Commedia. The drawings are meticulous and opaque. In this exhibition there are available large magnifying glasses.- and they are needed. Especially the angels in the Paradise section are described as for us typical Botticelli figures with their waving robes and bending bodies, but there are also devils in the Hell section.

************
I received today my copy of the exhibition catalog of Berliini Suomix exhibition in Berlin from 26th February to 4th March, 2016, and I noticed that a linocut of my comic strip Lilly Berlin was on the back cover of the catalog. In the booklet there are short introduction of the artists participating to the exhibition:  Pertti Hämäläinen, Timo Kokkila,Emmi Nieminen, TiituTakalo ja Tuukka Teponoja in addition to myself, and the curator Christian Jütte. There are also a few examples of the artists' works besides the comic strips. The exhibition in Galerie Vierraumladen was successful, there were enough visitors, and even some of my linocuts in the exhibition were sold, which was a surprise.
