BRITISH MUSEUM : PRINTS AND DRAWINGS GALLERY

British Museumin kiinnostavin huone on numero 90: Painokuvien ja piirustusten galleria (Prints and Drawings Gallery). Nyt näin siellä nimestä huolimatta vesivärimaalauksia. Francis Townen (1739-1816) työt Roomasta olivat kauniita, romanttisia, ilmavia ja täysin ilman ihmisiä. Näkymät voisivat varmaan olla samanlaisia nytkin, ellei turisteja olisi. Townen maalauksissa oli seesteinen, meditatiivinen tunnelma, joka heijasti antiikin Kreikan ja Rooman ajan tunnelmia ihannoidusti.

Huone 90:n aulassa on usein pieni kiinnostava grafiikan näyttely - niin nytkin. David Oxtobyn (s. 1938) etsaukset rockmusiikin klassikoista Elviksestä, Bob Dylanista ja Trafficistä aikalaisineen olivat sävykkäitä ja voimakkaita. Useat vedokset oli rajattu kapeiksi ja korkeiksi. Etsausten pohjana olivat varmasti olleet valokuvat, mutta kuvat eivät silti olleet mitään kopioita, niissä oli ihan oma tyylinsä ja voimansa.

Francis Towne

British Museum's most interesting room is number 90: Prints and Drawings Gallery. Despite its name I saw there watercolour paintings. Francis Towne's (1739-1816) watercolours of Rome were beautiful, romantic, airy and totally without people. The views might be quite the same nowadays, if there were no tourists. Towne's paintings had a serene, meditative feeling, which reminded an idealized atmosphere of the Ancient Greece and Rome.

In the lobby of Room 90 there are often interesting small graphics exhibitions - even when I visited a couple of days ago. David Oxtoby's (s. 1938) etchings of rock music legends, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Traffic and their contemporaries were multi-toned and powerful. Many of the etchings were bordered narrow and high. Behind these etchings there must have been photographs, but the pictures were still no copies, they had their own style and strength.
