I OBJECT - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

"Vastustan - Ian Hislop etsii eriävää mielipidettä" (I object - Ian Hislop´s Search for Dissent) British Museumissa Lontoossa oli tosi mielenkiintoinen näyttely.

I object - Ian Hislop´s Search for Dissent at British Museumissa in London was an interesting exhibition. Ian Hislop, known as the editor of Private Eye and TV personality, has his quite unique English dry sense of humour, and it was visible in the guide texts beside the objects. The texts were really worth of reading in this exhibition. With the help of them were clarified Banksy`s prank, the destiny of Emperor Augustus´ bronze head, a mat critizising Mobutu, the idea of a plate mocking Gorbatchov or a beautiful woodcut depicting on old woman and its maker who could have gone to jail from presenting "ordinary folk" - and of course there was the cat hat, which had been used in a demonstration against Trump.

AMERIKKA -NÄYTTELYT / AMERICA EXHIBITIONS

Lisää Lontoon näyttelyjä:
Royal Academy of Artsin näyttelyssä America after the Fall (Amerikka pörssiromahduksen jälkeen) oli yksi taiteilija ylitse muiden: Grant Wood (1891-1941). Kiki Smithin (s. 1954) kissa Ginzer sai hymyn huulille.

More exhibitions in London:
There was one artist over all the others in Royal Academy of Arts's exhibition America after the Fall: Grant Wood (1891-1941).His classic work American Gothic was borrowed to this exhibition in London from America, but also other paintings by Grant were fetching. Especially I liked his landscape painting where in the shapes of the fields you can clearly see voluminous curves: a plump chest and the curvy breasts. British Museums big exhibition The American Dream was even more interesting. Here you could see an awesome collection of American graphics from the 1960's to the present day. Of course, there were Warhol's electric chairs and Marilyns. Pretty much every technique was presented, perhaps the most masterly were Jim Dine's (b. 1935) drypoint, aquatint, mezzotint works of tools and brushes. In this exhibition I also saw a couple of beautiful woodcuts and linocuts: Wayne Thiebaud's (b. 1920) Gumball Machine and Richard Bosman's (b. 1944) Man Overboard. Kiki Smith's (b. 1954) cat Ginzer but a smile in my lips.

**************
There is art in London for a couple day's trip, almost too much. David Hockney's (b. 1935) huge exhibition in Tate Britain was a retrospective to his long career. The styles changed, so did techniques, the canvases got bigger and smaller, the landscapes changed rapidly. The
last Yorkshire landscapes were familiar already after an exhibition a couple years back, and that exhibition was really a better totality than this one. I would have liked to examine more his portraits from 1960-1970's. These didn't really flatter the sitters, but the surroundings were depicted finely: blank rooms, patterned armchairs, swimming pools and stylish clothes. At the same time there was in British Museum a small, more intimate exhibition of David Hockney's graphics. These etchings were beautiful, a bit mystic. It was fun to see in Tate a painting of hypnotist, and the same subject in British Museum as an etching, a mirror image. In the Snake etching there was a surprising red colour, intriguing. A huge artist, and a huge career!

BRITISH MUSEUM : PRINTS AND DRAWINGS GALLERY

British Museumin kiinnostavin huone on numero 90: Painokuvien ja piirustusten galleria (Prints and Drawings Gallery).

Francis Towne
British Museum's most interesting room is number 90: Prints and Drawings Gallery. Despite its name I saw there watercolour paintings. Francis Towne's (1739-1816) watercolours of Rome were beautiful, romantic, airy and totally without people. The views might be quite the same nowadays, if there were no tourists. Towne's paintings had a serene, meditative feeling, which reminded an idealized atmosphere of the Ancient Greece and Rome.

In the lobby of Room 90 there are often interesting small graphics exhibitions - even when I visited a couple of days ago. David Oxtoby's (s. 1938) etchings of rock music legends, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Traffic and their contemporaries were multi-toned and powerful. Many of the etchings were bordered narrow and high. Behind these etchings there must have been photographs, but the pictures were still no copies, they had their own style and strength.

DRAWING IN SILVER AND GOLD -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Pari päivää Lontoossa, ja taidetta kyllä riittää! British Museumin huone 90, Prints and Drawings Gallery on yksi vakiokohde. Nyt siellä oli näyttely Drawing in Silver and Gold - Leonardo to Jasper Johns. Hopeakynäpiirustus (silverpointi/metalpoint) on Suomessa aika tuntematon taidemuoto. Tekniikka on vanha.

A couple of days in London, and there really is a lot of art! British Museums room 90, Prints and Drawings Gallery is one of the constant targets. Now there was the exhibition Drawing in Silver and Gold - Leonardo to Jasper Johns. The technique of silverpoint or metalpoint drawing is an old one. The drawing is done with a sharp silver or metal stylus on a specially primed paper. The stylus draws or almost scrapes a fragile and soft line to the paper. Artists used the silverpoint mainly for their drafts or sketches. That´s why the spontaneous, unfinished or blundering impression of the drawings feels so interesting. Silverpoint was a good technique for drawing portraits, animals, furs, textiles or textures. Albrecht Dürer's (1471-1528) dog`s every hair or tendon is clearly visible. Hendrick Golzius (1558-1617) was the master of this technique and in his self-portrait has a perfect balance of nuances. There are masters of silverpoint even nowadays. In Frank Stella's (b. 1925) self-portrait the tufts of his hair and the squirrels back repeat funnily.

What a disappointment, we did not get in to the interesting M.C. Escher exhibition in Dulwich Picture Gallery! We could not wait the right time slot over two hours, and they didn't sell tickets for the next day. If you plan to visit this exhibition far from the centre of London in Southwark, buy tickets in advance in the Internet.

BM: JIM DINE

Jim Dine
British Museum on aina ohjelmassa kun käyn Lontoossa. Erityisesti grafiikan näyttelyosasto (Prints and drawings, huone 90) on kiinnostava.

The British Museum is always on the agenda when I am in London. Especially the graphic art section (Prints and drawings, room 90)  is interesting. Now there was an exhibition of Bonabarte and the British - I was not quite interested. But in the small room before graphics exhibition there is always some changing new graphic art. Now the walls were covered by American Jim Dine`s (b. 1935) etchings. The lines were fine, brushes and pubic hair side by side. Behind Napoleon there were interesting patterns on Pasific barkcloth clothing. And of course I wandered around the mummies in Ancient Lives, New Discoveries exhibition. Mummies were X-raid and they had found, mainly bad teeth. But the sarcophagus' have remained beautiful, gold glimmers and the patterns are timeless. Outside the magnolias were blooming, and there was not time enough to see the enchanting exhibition of Eric Raviloius' watercolours in Dulwitch Picture Gallery. Happily this exhibition is open till August 31th, still time to visit. during the summer.

Miten tällaista koskaan kukaan on edes voinut ajatella aloittavansa tällaista puupiirrosta?

Beside the British Museum´s entrance hall there is a small room, where always is exhibited only one object or art work. Now there was Albrecht Dürer´s (1471-1528) enormous woodcut  "The Arch of Emperor Maximilian". Dürer and his team designed and made this gigantic graphic work in three years between 1515 and 1518. In this arch there are 192 separate woodcuts or sheets and it´s over 3,5 meters high. Emperor Maximilian had his own political and pompous purposes when he commissioned this work. He planned to have a couple of these woodcuts on display in his palace as an indication for his power. Now we can only wonder and admire the technique and the amount of work of this enormous woodcut. How can ever anyone even have thought of beginning this kind of woodcut?

NOITIA - NÄYTTELY / WITCHES - EXHIBITION

Piietr van der Heyden, 1526-1569
Muutamankin päivän matkalla Lontoossa ehtii tutustua aika moneen upeaan näyttelyyn. British Museumin huone 90 on aina mielenkiintoinen. Siellä on esillä grafiikkaa museon kokoelmista. Tämänkertainen näyttely oli erityisen hyvä: "Witches and wicked bodies / Noitia ja häijyjä hahmoja". Noituuden historiaa näyttely esitteli renessanssista 1800-luvun loppuun.

Hans Baldung, 1484-1545
During a couple of days in London I managed to explore quite a many fine exhibitions. British Museum´s room 90 is always interesting. There you can see graphic works from the collections of the museum. This time the exhibition was exceptionally fine: "Witches and wicked bodies". The exhibition displayed the history of witchcraft from the Renaissance to the end of the 1800`s. Even though also men practiced witchcraft, mainly women were persecuted and killed as witches. Often women were seen wicked and evil witches, who could enchant bad luck and suffering to their enemies. Men witches were linked more to battles, display of power and winning. Also the fear of sexuality was often a subject for the art works, later also some kind of glorifying of womanly mysticism. The most interesting part of the exhibition were the etchings or woodcuts from the 1500`s: weird characters, skulls, pure fear and prejudice finely depicted as shadows and lights.

PICASSO: LINOLEIKKAUKSIA / LINOCUTS

Muutaman päivän aikana Lontoossa ehtii aika moneen taidenäyttelyyn. Tämä oli mielenkiintoinen. Poikkesin British Museumin pieneen näyttelyyn kahdesta Pablo Picasson (1881-1973) linoleikkauksesta.

There is time for a few art exhibition during couple of day´s visit in London. This was interesting. I stopped in a small exhibition of Pablo Picasso´s (1881-1973) two linocuts in British Museum. The museum had acquired several prints of these linocuts in their different stages, and they opened finely the working methods. Picasso made a lot of linocuts especially in the 1950-1960´s. The works in this exhibition were done in 1962. The other of the linocuts was a colourful still life of a glass, light bulb and fruits. This work was done with the reduction technique where you carve more and more away from the same block and pull the different version on top of each other. Picasso has used here surprisingly contrast colours, green, yellow and red. The black stage on it´s own is beautiful.

The other linocut was a portrait of his wife Jacqueline. This linocut was made with two separate block. On the other block Picasso had scratched thin lines with some sharp blade, and the result was more like some other style of graphics than linocut. On the second block he carved only thick outlines, and these two pictures were then pulled on top of each other. The result was not very pleasant, too scruffy and plugged. Only the outlines would have been enough.
