PICASSO: LINOLEIKKAUKSIA / LINOCUTS

Muutaman päivän aikana Lontoossa ehtii aika moneen taidenäyttelyyn. Tämä oli mielenkiintoinen. Poikkesin British Museumin pieneen näyttelyyn kahdesta Pablo Picasson (1881-1973) linoleikkauksesta. Museo oli saanut kokoelmiinsa useita vedoksia linoleikkausten eri vaiheista, jotka hienosti avasivat tekotapoja. Picasso teki paljon linoleikkauksia erityisesti 1950-1960-luvuilla. Näyttelyn työt oli tehty vuonna 1962. Toinen näyttelyn linoleikkauksista oli värikäs asetelma lasista, hehkulampusta ja hedelmistä. Työ on tehty reduktio-menetelmällä eli kaivertamalla samasta laatasta aina lisää pois ja vedostamalla eri versiot päällekkäin. Picasso on tässä käyttänyt yllättävän kontrastisia värejä, vihreää, keltaista ja punaista. Mustakin vaihe yksinään oli kaunis.

Toinen linoleikkaus oli muotokuva Jacqueline-vaimosta. Linoleikkaus oli tehty kahdella eri laatalla. Toiselle laatalle Picasso oli terävällä piikillä raapinut ohuita viivoja niin, että tulos vaikutti joltain muulta grafiikalta kuin linoleikkaukselta. Toiselle laatalla oli kaiverrettu paksut ääriviivat ja painettu nämä kuvat päällekkäin. Lopputulos ei ollut kovin miellyttävä, liian suttuinen ja tukkoinen. Pelkkä musta ääriviivaversio olisi riittänyt.

There is time for a few art exhibition during couple of day´s visit in London. This was interesting. I stopped in a small exhibition of Pablo Picasso´s (1881-1973) two linocuts in British Museum. The museum had acquired several prints of these linocuts in their different stages, and they opened finely the working methods. Picasso made a lot of linocuts especially in the 1950-1960´s. The works in this exhibition were done in 1962. The other of the linocuts was a colourful still life of a glass, light bulb and fruits. This work was done with the reduction technique where you carve more and more away from the same block and pull the different version on top of each other. Picasso has used here surprisingly contrast colours, green, yellow and red. The black stage on it´s own is beautiful. 

The other linocut was a portrait of his wife Jacqueline. This linocut was made with two separate block. On the other block Picasso had scratched thin lines with some sharp blade, and the result was more like some other style of graphics than linocut. On the second block he carved only thick outlines, and these two pictures were then pulled on top of each other. The result was not very pleasant, too scruffy and plugged. Only the outlines would have been enough.
