Taivas alkaa muotoutua Pispalan kattojen ylle. Nyt pastellia tulikin oranssinkeltaisena taivaanrantaan alas ja lintujen taakse ylös. Mitähän  tulee keskelle taivasta?

The sky is starting to take shape over the rooftops of Pispala. Now orange-yellow pastel colour has come down to the horizon and up behind the birds. What is coming up in the middle of the sky?
 

KOIRILLE JA KISSALLE SILMÄT / EYES FOR TWO DOGS AND A CAT

 

Kahden koiran ja yhden kissan silmät on nyt kaiverrettu. Näissä pienissä 15 x 10 cm linopiirroksissa silmät ovat olennaiset kohdat. Jos niiden kaiverrus olisi mennyt ihan pieleen, olisin heittänyt linot roskiin. On kyllä hiukan vaiakea nähdä näistä lopullista silmien ilmettä kun kaiverrettu lino on peilikuva lopullisesta eli "väärinpäin".

The eyes of two dogs and one cat are now carved. In these small 15 x 10 cm linocuts the eyes are essential points. If their engraving had gone completely wrong, I would have thrown the lino sheets in the trash. It's a bit difficult to see the final expression of these eyes, when the engraved lino is a mirror image of the final one, i.e. "wrong way around".

The days between Christmas holidays - lazy times! I sketched three small 15 x 10 cm dog and cat linocuts. In these, the eyes are the most important feature. I'm going to carve those eyes first.

SIIRRYN LUOLIIN SINISIIN / I´M GOING TO THE BLUE CAVES

 Tilaustyö kaloista ja vedestä Tahmelan rannassa on kehystetty, kapeat mustat puukehykset. Taulu on aika iso, mutta mahtui uuden omistajansa autoon ja matkusti kotiinsa. Tämäkin taulu sai nimensä Juice Leskisen sanoituksista, Syvänmeresukeltajasta "Siirryn luoliin sinisiin, on hyvä olla täällä".

The commissioned work about fish and water on the Tahmela shore is framed in narrow black wooden frames. The picture is quite big, but it fit in the new owner's car and went home. This picture also got its name from Juice Leskinen's lyrics, from Deep Sea Diver "I'm Going To the Blue Caves, It's Good To Be Here".

POHJAA JA VALONSÄTEITÄ / BOTTOM AND RAYS OF LIGHT

 

Vesi- ja kalakuvassa pohjan teko on hauskaa, Yritin tässä saada valon heijastumaan pohjakivistä. Kalojen joukkoon lisäsin valonsäteitä. Veden alla ei olekaan pimeää ja synkkää!

In a water and fish picture, making the bottom is fun, I tried to make the light reflect from the stones. I added rays of light to the fish. It's not dark and gloomy under the water!

VETTÄ JA KALOJA / FISH AND WATER

 

Aika iso tilaustyö Pispala/ Tahmelan rannasta (linopiirros) ja rantavedestä (pastelli) kaloineen (linopiirroksia) sai minut kokeilemaan paria erilaista kalaa. Toinen on aiemmassa "Veden alla" linossa alaosassa ollut ahven evineen. Toinen on pyöreässä vinkurassa oleva hauki, joka alle vedostin myös aaaltokuvion ja joukon pikkukaloja.

A rather large commissioned work about Pispala/ Tahmela beach (linocut) and beach water (pastel) with fish (linocuts) made me try a couple of different kind of fish. The other one is the perch with fins that was in the lower part of the previous "Under the water" lino. The second is a pike in a round ring, under which I also printed a wave pattern and a group of small fish.

PIENET KALAT / SMALL FISH

 

Tarvitsin lisää pieniä linopiirroksia kaloista yhtä työtä varten. Tein siis kaksi pientä linoa raidallisista kaloista ja siinä samalla syntyi meduusa, jonka ehkä voisi vedostaa värillisenä.Saa nähdä, millaiseen veteen nämä päätyvät.

I needed more small linocuts of fish for one job. So I made two small linos of striped fish and at the same time a jellyfish was born, which maybe could be printed in color. Let's see what kind of water these end up in.

KESÄ JATKUU. KESÄ / SUMMER CONTINUES.SUMMER

 Nyt vasta sain vedostetuksi "Kesä jatkuu.Kesä" -linopiirrokseni kokonaisena. Kaatuminen, olkapään murtuma ja työhuoneen muutto ovat vieneet oman aikansa. Nyt alkaa taas näyttää linopiirrostenkin teko mahdolliselta ja houkuttelevalta. Tässä linossa on poikeastaan kaksi osaa yhdessä: "Kesä jatkuu" ja "Kesä" eli Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava ja Pispalan rinne yhdessä. Kuvan koko on 30 x 80 cm. Kuvan nimi on lainaus pispalalaisen runoilijan Lauri Viidan runosta. Oieni punainen piste on vasemmalla yläkulmassa käsin väritetty Pispalan punaianen haulitorni. En ole laskenut, miten monta taloa mahtui Pispalan rinteeseen, on niitä ainakin kymmeniä ja miten ihanaa niitä oli kaivertaa! Nyt on jo kesä ohi, mutta uutta kohti mennään!

I just got my "Summer continues. Summer" linocut printed in its entirety. A fall, a broken shoulder and a move to the new work room have taken their own time. Now it's starting to look possible and attractive to make linocuts again. This lino actually has two parts together: "Summer continues" and "Summer", i.e. the elm of Tahmela beach and the Pispala ridge together. The size of the picture is 30 x 80 cm. The name of the picture is a quote from a poem by Lauri Viita, a poet from Pispala. The red dot in the left upper corner is Pispala's red shot tower, hand-coloured. I haven't counted how many houses fit on the Pispala ridge, there are at least tens of them and how wonderful it was to carve them! Now the summer is over, but let's move on to a new one!

KAKSI JOULUKORTTIA / TWO CHRISTMAS CARDS

Teetin kahdesta kollaasista joulukortit. Kortit on painettu Tamkopiossa, ja jälki on erinomainen. Paperi on hiukan kohokuvioitu valkoinen kartonki ja kortti 14 x 14 cm kokoinen kahtia taitettu, linopiirrroslogoni takana. Etsyssä ja muuallakin, mm. Naivismin talvi -näyttelyssä Iittalassa ja Interin joulupuodissa, kortin mukana tulee kirjekuori. Vasta kun katsoin valmiita kortteja, huomasin että aihe ja värit ovatkin aika tummat, yrittävät nyt henkiä joulun lämpöä ja rauhaa. Olisiko maailman tilanne sotineen vaikuttanut minuunkin? Aiempina vuosina joulukortit ovat olleet jotenkin riehakkaampiakin. Nyt toivotetaan rauhaa jouluun!

I made Christmas cards from two collages. The cards are printed in Tamkopio, and the impression is excellent. The paper is slightly embossed white cardboard and the card is 14 x 14 cm folded in half, with my linocut logo on the back. On Etsy and elsewhere, e.g. In the Naive Art Winter exhibition in Iittala and Interi's Christmas shop, the card comes with an envelope. It was only when I looked at the finished cards that I noticed that the subject and the colors are quite dark, trying to give off the warmth and peace of Christmas. Would the state of the world with the wars have affected me too? In previous years, Christmas cards have been somewhat more raucous. Now let's wish peace for Christmas!

NELJÄ KISSAA TYYNYLLÄ / FOUR CATS ON A PILLOW

 Neljä kollaasia on nyt valmiina. Tyynyt on tehty kollaasina koristepaperin palasista ja kissa on linopiirros. Tyynyn palasten väliin jääneitä tyhjiä paikkoja yritin täyttää värittämällä. Miten onkaan niin vaikeaa leikata juuri oikean kokoisia paperinpaloja! Taidan valita näistä kaksi, joista voisin teettää tämän joulun joulukortteja.

Four collages are now ready. The pillows are made as a collage from pieces of decorative paper and the cat is a lino drawing. I tried to fill in the empty spaces left between the pieces of the pillow by coloring. How is it so difficult to cut pieces of paper of just the right size! I think I

will choose two of these that I could use to make Christmas cards this Christmas.

KESÄ / SUMMER

Linopiirroksen Pispalan rinteestä vedostin jo ennen kuin kaaduin ja mursin olkapääni. Nyt tuntuu ihan mahtavalta kun pystyi värittämään yläkulmassa vasemmalla olevan Pispalan haulitornin ihan itse oikealla kädellä. Olkapään venytyksiä ja harjoitteita pitäisi vaan tehdä, lääkärin määräyksestä, 30 kertaa päivässä! Joopa joo, puhelimeen pitää tehdä muistutus.

Tämä on ehkä eniten ykstyiskohtia sisältävä linopiirrokseni Pispalasta, ja aika isokin, 30 x 40 cm. Seuraavaksi aion yhdistää tämän linopiirrokseen Tahmelan rannan kynäjalavasta. alkua siihen on olemassa jo ajalta ennen murtumaa.

I printed this linocut from the Pispala ridge already before I fell and fractured my shoulder. Now it feels really great, marvellous when I was able to color the Pispala shot tower in the upper left corner with my right hand. Shoulder stretches and exercises should be done, as prescribed by the doctor, 30 times a day! Yes, yes, you have to set a reminder on the phone.

This is perhaps my linocut of Pispala with the most details, and quite big too, 30 x 40 cm. Next, I'm going to combine this with a linocut from the elm elm on Tahmela beach. the beginning of it already exists from the time before the fracture.

 

KESÄ / SUMMER

Linopiirros Pispalan harjusta "Kesä jatkuu" eli kynäjalava -linopiirroksen kaveriksi on vedostettu. Olisiko tämän nimi vain "Kesä". Taivasta voisi ehkä vielä vaalentaa eli kaivertaa lisää linoa pois, jotta rinne erottuisi paremmin. Ja haulitorni vasemmassa ylälaidassa pitää värittää punaiseksi. Muuten tämä 30 x 40 cm linopiirros vastaa aika hyvin sitä, mikä oli mielessäni, oikeastaan koko kesän ajan.

The linocut from Pispala's ridge is now printed as a friend to the earlier linocut "Summer Continues" or elm linocut. This one might be called just "Summer". The sky could perhaps be lightened, i.e. cut off more lino, so that the ridge stands out better. And the Pispala shot tower on the upper left corner should be colored red. Otherwise, this 30 x 40 cm linocut corresponds quite well to what I had in mind, actually through the whole summer.

PISPALAN RINNE - LINO KAIVERRETTU / PISPALA RIDGE - LINO IS CARVED

Linopiirros Pispalan rinteestä on kaiverrettu. Ja olihan siinä näpräämistä, kymmeniä taloja, parit portaat, vene, puita ja vettä. tämä on japanilaista vinyyliä, 30 x 40 cm, ihanteellinen materiaali pienten, tarkkojen yksityiskohtien kaivertamiseen, ei murene.

Ehdin vedostaa tämän linopiirroksen paperille sekä aloitella isomman kahden tällaisen Pispala-linon vedostusta yhdeksi isommaksi kuvaksi (tämä rinne + kynäjalava), mutta sitten kaaduin olkapäälleni Tahmelan omenatarhan polulla kymmenisen päivää sitten. Oikea käsi on nyt kantositeessä, sillä olkavarressa on murtuma. Ainut ilo tässä taitaa olla, että olkapäätä ei tarvitse leikata. Mutta käden saaminen toimintakuntoon (olen oikeakätinen) tulee viemään aikaa. Nyt olen vasta puristellut vanhaa Saddam-stressilelua. Kuvataiteilijallehan käden toiminta on välttämätöntä, ja kun sen menettää vaikka vain väliaikaisesti, se on iso psyykkinenkin mullistus. Kyky innostua, kokea luovuutta ja ehkä onnistumisen ilokin katoaa, sopeutuminen tilanteeseen ei ole helppoa. Tekstin tekijä voi ehkä tuottaa tekstiä puhumisen avulla, ja laulaja voi laulaa, mutta linon kaivertaminen, värin levittäminen tai kuvan vedostaminen tuntuvat nyt ihan ylellisyydeltä. Blogitekstin naputtelee hitaasti vasemmallakin kädellä, ja Googlen kääntäjä (AI ?) muuttaa tekstin englanniksi käden käänteessä Jatkan siis blogia omaksi ilokseni postailemalla keskeneräisiä töitä tai muuta mieleen tulevaa. Pysykää pystyssä ja nauttikaa syksystä!

I had time to print this linocut on paper and start combining two of these Pispala linos into one bigger picture (this ridge + elm), but then I fell on my shoulder on the path of the Tahmela apple orchard ten days ago. The right arm is now in a sling, as there is a fracture in the upper arm. The only joy here seems to be that the shoulder does not have to be operated. But getting my hand in working condition (I'm right-handed) will take time. Now I've just squeezed the old rubber Saddam stress toy. After all, for a visual artist, the function of the hand is essential, and when you lose it, even temporarily, it's a big psychological upheaval. The ability to get excited, experience creativity and maybe even the joy of success disappears, adapting to the situation is not easy. The author of the text may be able to produce the text by speaking, and the singer can sing, but carving a lino, spreading color or printing a picture now seems like a luxury. I tap the blog text slowly with my left hand, and the Google translator (AI ?) changes the text to English in the blink of an eye. Stay upright and enjoy autumn!

PISPALAN RINNE - kaiverrusta / PISPALA RIDGE - Carving

 

Vähitellen talot alkavat näkyä kaiverrettuina tässä linopiirroksessa Pispalan rinteestä. Eteenpäin vaan, talo kerrallaan. Rannassa halusin tehdä santaa ja käytin pienten reikien tekoon vasaraa ja naulaa. Linnut lähipuissa ihmettelivät sitä nakutusta.

Little by little, the houses start to appear carved in this linocut from the Pispala ridge. Going ahead, one house at a time. On the beach, I wanted to make sand and I used a hammer and a nail to make small holes. The birds in the nearby trees marveled at that pecking.

 

PISPALAN RINNE -luonnos / PISPALA RIDGE - Sketch

 

Kynäjalavan pariksi on nyt tulossa linopiirros Pispalan rinteestä. Jos oli kynäjalava täynnä pieniä oksia, yksityiskohtia, niin onhan sama ihan sama asia tämän linopiirroksen kanssa. Kuvassa on niin paljon taloja ja ykstyiskohtia, että minun piti tehdä tussilla luonnos suoraan linolevylle. Taloja on kymmeniä, kahdet puuportaat, kasvimaata, pari venettä rannassa ja iso urakka kaivertamista edessä. Hommiin vaan!

 "KESÄ JATKUU,  KESÄ" lukee Tahmelan rannalla olevassa kyltissä. No, ainakin lukee tässä linopiirroksessani. Tuo nimi on lainaus Lauri Viidan runosta. Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava (Ulmus laevis) on kaunein puu, jonka tiedän. Tässä linopiirroksessa puu on ilman lehtiä, vaikka kesä jatkuu. Ja oksiston kaiverrus olikin aika pitkäaikainen homma, oksa kerrallaan. Kuvan koko on 30 x 40 cm, ja aikomukseni on jatkaa tätä maisemaa vasemmalle samankokoisella linopiirroksella Pispalan rinteestä.

"SUMMER CONTINUES, SUMMER" reads the sign on Tahmela's beach. Well, at least it says so in this linocut of mine. That name is a quote from Lauri Viita's poem. The elm (Ulmus laevis) on Tahmela beach is the most beautiful tree I know. In this linocut, the tree is without leaves, even though summer continues. And the carving of the branches was quite a long-term job, one branch at a time. The size of the picture is 30 x 40 cm, and my intention is to continue this landscape to the left with a lino drawing of the same size from the ridge of Pispala.

KYNÄJALAVA - vedostusta / ELM - Printing

 Linopiirroksen ensimmäinen koevedos on aina jännittävä. Onko kuva ollenkaan se, mitä linopiirrosta kaivertaessa on kuvitellut. Näyttää minusta lupaavalta, pientä viilausta vielä tarvitaan. Puun oksistossa näyttää vielä olevan pari paikkaa, josta kaivertaminen on unohtunut.

The first test print of a linocut is always exciting. Is the picture at all what was imagined when carving the linocut. It looks promising to me, a little fixing is still needed. There still seem to be a couple of places in the branches of the tree where carving has been forgotten.

KYNÄJALAVA KAIVERRETTU / ELM HAS BEEN CARVED

 

Tämän Tahmelan rannan kysäjalavan kaivertamiseen kului enemmän aikaa kuin minkään aiemman linolevyn kaiverrukseen. Olin jossain vaiheessa menettää uskon, että tämä valmistuu koskaan. No, toisaalta tällainen hidas kaivertaminen on hyvin meditatiivista. Voi keskittyä vain siihen, antaa ajatusten seikkailla aikansa ja nähdä, miten vähitellen valmistuu se kuva, joka oli tavoitteena.

It took more time to carve this  elm on Tahmela beach than to carve any previous lino plate. I was at one point losing faith that this would ever be completed. Well, on the other hand, this kind of slow carving is very meditative. You can only focus on that, let your thoughts take their time and see how the image that was the goal is gradually completed.

KYNÄJALAVA - kaiverrusta / ELM - Carving

 

Tämä kynäjälava onkin niin täynnä yksityiskohtia, että minun piti tussilla piirtää luonnos linolevylle, jota normaalisti en neäin tarkkaan tee. Linolevynä on japanilainen vinyyli 30 x 40 cm. Levy on kaksipuolinen, sininen ja vihreä. En tiedä, miksi useimmiten käytän vihreää puolta. Kaiverruksen jälki ehkä näkyy tässä paremmin, vaikka harhauttavasti kaiverrettu kohta onkin tummempi kun se vedostettuna on valkoinen. Ja tuo peilikuva, sekin on mietittävä, että kirjaimet tulevat oikein päin (eli kaiverrettaessa väärin päin). Rannalla olevassa kyltissä lukee: "KESÄ JATKUU. KESÄ".

This elm is so full of details that I had to use a marker to draw a sketch on the lino plate, which I normally don't do that accurately. The lino plate is Japanese vinyl 30 x 40 cm. The plate is double-sided, blue and green. I don't know why I mostly use the green side. The trace of the engraving is perhaps better visible here, although misleadingly engraved part is darker when it is white when printed. And that mirror image, you also have to think that the letters come out the right way round (that is, the wrong way round when engraving). A sign on the beach reads: "SUMMER CONTINUES. SUMMER". 

KYNÄJALAVA - luonnos / ELM - Sketch

 Linopiirrokseen kynäjälavasta on mallina Tahmelan rannassa kasvava vanha puu. Muutama kuva kännykällä on otettu talvella kun puussa ei ole lehtiä, ja niitä käytän mallina. Minua kiehtoo linopiirroksen teossa juuri kynäjalavan kiemuraiset, paljaat oksat ja koko puun iso hahmo. Tässä vaan taitaa olla vähäksi aikaa kaivertamista. Yleensä en tee näin tarkkaa luonnosta linolevylle, mutta nyt puun oksia on niin paljon, että tarkempi luonnos on paikallaan. No, hiljalleen muiden hommien ohessa.

An old tree growing on the shore of Tahmela beach is used as a model for the linocut. A few pictures with a mobile phone were taken in winter when there are no leaves on the tree, and I use them as a model. What fascinates me when making this linocut are the twists of the elm, the bare branches and the big figure of the whole tree. It seems that there will be carving here for a while. I usually don't make such a detailed sketch on a lino plate, but now there are so many tree branches that a more detailed sketch is in order. Well, slowly along with this one.
