KESÄ JATKUU. KESÄ / SUMMER CONTINUES.SUMMER

 Nyt vasta sain vedostetuksi "Kesä jatkuu.Kesä" -linopiirrokseni kokonaisena. Kaatuminen, olkapään murtuma ja työhuoneen muutto ovat vieneet oman aikansa. Nyt alkaa taas näyttää linopiirrostenkin teko mahdolliselta ja houkuttelevalta. Tässä linossa on poikeastaan kaksi osaa yhdessä: "Kesä jatkuu" ja "Kesä" eli Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava ja Pispalan rinne yhdessä. Kuvan koko on 30 x 80 cm. Kuvan nimi on lainaus pispalalaisen runoilijan Lauri Viidan runosta. Oieni punainen piste on vasemmalla yläkulmassa käsin väritetty Pispalan punaianen haulitorni. En ole laskenut, miten monta taloa mahtui Pispalan rinteeseen, on niitä ainakin kymmeniä ja miten ihanaa niitä oli kaivertaa! Nyt on jo kesä ohi, mutta uutta kohti mennään!

I just got my "Summer continues. Summer" linocut printed in its entirety. A fall, a broken shoulder and a move to the new work room have taken their own time. Now it's starting to look possible and attractive to make linocuts again. This lino actually has two parts together: "Summer continues" and "Summer", i.e. the elm of Tahmela beach and the Pispala ridge together. The size of the picture is 30 x 80 cm. The name of the picture is a quote from a poem by Lauri Viita, a poet from Pispala. The red dot in the left upper corner is Pispala's red shot tower, hand-coloured. I haven't counted how many houses fit on the Pispala ridge, there are at least tens of them and how wonderful it was to carve them! Now the summer is over, but let's move on to a new one!

KESÄ JATKUU / SUMMER CONTINUES

 "KESÄ JATKUU,  KESÄ" lukee Tahmelan rannalla olevassa kyltissä. No, ainakin lukee tässä linopiirroksessani. Tuo nimi on lainaus Lauri Viidan runosta. Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava (Ulmus laevis) on kaunein puu, jonka tiedän. Tässä linopiirroksessa puu on ilman lehtiä, vaikka kesä jatkuu. Ja oksiston kaiverrus olikin aika pitkäaikainen homma, oksa kerrallaan. Kuvan koko on 30 x 40 cm, ja aikomukseni on jatkaa tätä maisemaa vasemmalle samankokoisella linopiirroksella Pispalan rinteestä.

"SUMMER CONTINUES, SUMMER" reads the sign on Tahmela's beach. Well, at least it says so in this linocut of mine. That name is a quote from Lauri Viita's poem. The elm (Ulmus laevis) on Tahmela beach is the most beautiful tree I know. In this linocut, the tree is without leaves, even though summer continues. And the carving of the branches was quite a long-term job, one branch at a time. The size of the picture is 30 x 40 cm, and my intention is to continue this landscape to the left with a lino drawing of the same size from the ridge of Pispala.

KYNÄJALAVA - vedostusta / ELM - Printing

 Linopiirroksen ensimmäinen koevedos on aina jännittävä. Onko kuva ollenkaan se, mitä linopiirrosta kaivertaessa on kuvitellut. Näyttää minusta lupaavalta, pientä viilausta vielä tarvitaan. Puun oksistossa näyttää vielä olevan pari paikkaa, josta kaivertaminen on unohtunut.

The first test print of a linocut is always exciting. Is the picture at all what was imagined when carving the linocut. It looks promising to me, a little fixing is still needed. There still seem to be a couple of places in the branches of the tree where carving has been forgotten.

KYNÄJALAVA KAIVERRETTU / ELM HAS BEEN CARVED

 

Tämän Tahmelan rannan kysäjalavan kaivertamiseen kului enemmän aikaa kuin minkään aiemman linolevyn kaiverrukseen. Olin jossain vaiheessa menettää uskon, että tämä valmistuu koskaan. No, toisaalta tällainen hidas kaivertaminen on hyvin meditatiivista. Voi keskittyä vain siihen, antaa ajatusten seikkailla aikansa ja nähdä, miten vähitellen valmistuu se kuva, joka oli tavoitteena.

It took more time to carve this  elm on Tahmela beach than to carve any previous lino plate. I was at one point losing faith that this would ever be completed. Well, on the other hand, this kind of slow carving is very meditative. You can only focus on that, let your thoughts take their time and see how the image that was the goal is gradually completed.

KYNÄJALAVA - kaiverrusta / ELM - Carving

 

Tämä kynäjälava onkin niin täynnä yksityiskohtia, että minun piti tussilla piirtää luonnos linolevylle, jota normaalisti en neäin tarkkaan tee. Linolevynä on japanilainen vinyyli 30 x 40 cm. Levy on kaksipuolinen, sininen ja vihreä. En tiedä, miksi useimmiten käytän vihreää puolta. Kaiverruksen jälki ehkä näkyy tässä paremmin, vaikka harhauttavasti kaiverrettu kohta onkin tummempi kun se vedostettuna on valkoinen. Ja tuo peilikuva, sekin on mietittävä, että kirjaimet tulevat oikein päin (eli kaiverrettaessa väärin päin). Rannalla olevassa kyltissä lukee: "KESÄ JATKUU. KESÄ".

This elm is so full of details that I had to use a marker to draw a sketch on the lino plate, which I normally don't do that accurately. The lino plate is Japanese vinyl 30 x 40 cm. The plate is double-sided, blue and green. I don't know why I mostly use the green side. The trace of the engraving is perhaps better visible here, although misleadingly engraved part is darker when it is white when printed. And that mirror image, you also have to think that the letters come out the right way round (that is, the wrong way round when engraving). A sign on the beach reads: "SUMMER CONTINUES. SUMMER". 

KYNÄJALAVA - luonnos / ELM - Sketch

 Linopiirrokseen kynäjälavasta on mallina Tahmelan rannassa kasvava vanha puu. Muutama kuva kännykällä on otettu talvella kun puussa ei ole lehtiä, ja niitä käytän mallina. Minua kiehtoo linopiirroksen teossa juuri kynäjalavan kiemuraiset, paljaat oksat ja koko puun iso hahmo. Tässä vaan taitaa olla vähäksi aikaa kaivertamista. Yleensä en tee näin tarkkaa luonnosta linolevylle, mutta nyt puun oksia on niin paljon, että tarkempi luonnos on paikallaan. No, hiljalleen muiden hommien ohessa.

An old tree growing on the shore of Tahmela beach is used as a model for the linocut. A few pictures with a mobile phone were taken in winter when there are no leaves on the tree, and I use them as a model. What fascinates me when making this linocut are the twists of the elm, the bare branches and the big figure of the whole tree. It seems that there will be carving here for a while. I usually don't make such a detailed sketch on a lino plate, but now there are so many tree branches that a more detailed sketch is in order. Well, slowly along with this one.

KYNÄJALAVA - aloitusta / ELM - Beginning

 Silloin oli kesä kun aloitin tämän aika hitaan linopiirroksen. Luonnostelin kahden A4-kokoisen linopiirroksen yhdistämistä leveäksi  kuvaksi. Toisella puolella olisi Pispalan harju ja toisella puolella Tahmelan rannassa oleva mahtava puu, vanha kynäjalava. Kesämökin laiturilla pieni tuuli rapisteli kaisloja ja lokit huutelivat taivaalla. Onko tämä liian hidas tehdä meikäläisen luonteella?

It was summer when I started this rather slow linocut. I sketched the combination of two A4-sized linocuts into a wider picture. On one side would be Pispala ridge and on the other side would be the great tree on the shore of Tahmela, an old elm. At the pier of the summer cottage, a small wind rustled the reeds and seagulls screamed in the sky. Is this too slow to do with my character?

YLI VIRRAN UIT JA LENSIT POIS NIIN LUJAA / ACROSS THE STREAM YOU SWAM AND FLEW AWAY SO FAST

 

Kissa ei enää voinut vastustaa kiusausta sukeltaa kalojen perään Pispalan rannassa. Rantavesi onkin täynnä linopiirroskaloja ja aurinko siivilöityy rantavedessä ja pohjan kivissä. Muutama korallikin on kasvanut simpukoiden joukkoon. Yläosan rantakin on linopiirros. Vesi on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla, ja tavoittelin siinä tuota valon ja varjon vaihtelua rantavedessä. Kuva on aika iso: 67 x 60 cm. 

Taulun uuden omistajan kanssa päätettiin, että kuvan nimeksi tulee "Yli virran uit ja lensit pois niin lujaa" Juicen laulusta Minea.

The cat could not any more resist her temptation to dive after the fishes at the Tahmela beach. Well, the beach water is full of linocut fishes, and the sun filters down on the stones at the bottom and the shore water. Even some corals are growing amongst the linocut shells. The upper shore is also a linocut. The water was done with soft pastels, and I was aiming there that variation of light and shadow in the beach water. The picture is quite big: 67 x 60 cm. With the new owner of this work we decided that the picture will be called " Across the Stream You Swam And Flew Away So Fast" after Juice Leskinen's song Minea.

LISÄÄ PASTELLIVETTÄ / MORE PASTEL WATER

 

Sekatekniikkatyö linopiirroksia ja pastellia alkaa olla valmis. Kuva odottelee vielä viimeistelyä vielä viimeistelyä pienessä työhuoneen kylpyhuoneessa. Tavoittelin veteen valoa sekä rantaan että pohjan kiviin.

The mixed media work of linocuts and soft pastel is ready soon. The picture is still waiting some final touches hanging in the bathroom of my work room. I was aiming some light in the water both on the beach and the stones at the bottom.

UUSI KALA JA PASTELLIA / NEW FISH AND PASTEL

 

Uuteen veden alaiseen kuvaan löysin jo aika monen vuoden takaa linopiirroksen kalasta, joka sopikin ihan hyvin maisemaan. Nyt kuvassa on kaksi näitä kaloja. Pastellivesi alkoi hahmottua, sinistä ja vihreää.

I found a linocut of a fish, made a few years back, but it fits to the new picture of under water world. Now there are two of these fish in the picture. Also the pastel water started to form, blue and green.

KALOJA JA KISSA / FISH AND CAT

 Aloitin suunnitella vielä yhtä aika isoa sekatekniikkatyötä kaloista ja vedestä. Tähän kuvaan tulee yläosaan linopiirros Tahmelan rannasta ja veteen kaloja, simpukoita ja sitten sinne hyppäsi rannalta kissa.

I started planning still one quite big mixed media work of fish and water. There will be in this picture on the upper part a linocut of the Tahmela beach and in  the water will be swimming fish, shells and then a cat jumped in there from the beach.

VEDEN ALLA / UNDER WATER

UNOHDUIN, UIN UNELMIIN, ON HYVÄ OLLA TÄÄLLÄ / I FORGOT, I SWAM IN DREAMS, IT'S GOOD TO BE HERE

 

Nyt tämä tähän mennessä suurin sekatekniikkatyöni, linopiirroksia ja pastellia taitaa olla valmis. Yläosassa on linopiirros Tahmelan rannasta Pispalassa, veneitä ja kasvipalstoja. Alaosassa on kivinen pohja ja muutama vesikasvi sekä simpukoita, linopiirrroksia ja pastellia. Suurimman osan kuvasta vie vesi (pastellia valonsäteineen) ja iso joukko kaloja (linopiirrroksia). Tätä oli niin hauska tehdä, että taidan tehdä vielä yhden melkein yhtä ison. Tämän kuvan koko on 100 x 60 cm ja luullakseni tämä olisi menossä kesäksi Naivistit Iittalassa-näyttelyyn. 

Näin iso työ aiheutti hiukan tilaongelmia pienessä työhuoneessani, pöytäpinta riitti juuri, mutta kylpyhuoneessa kuivuminen oli konstikasta ja nyt kuva odottaa tulevaisuuttaan seinällä muiden kuvien päällä.

Nimeksi kuvalle tuli "Unohduin, uin unelmiin, on hyvä olla täällä" Juicen kappaleesta Syvänmerensukeltaja.

Now I think that this my so far the biggest mixed media work might be ready, linocuts and pastel. In the upper part there is a linocut of the Tahmela beach in Pispala, boats and vegetable plots. Down there is a stony bottom of the lake and a few water plants and shells, linocuts and pastel. The biggest part of the picture is water (pastel with beams of light) and quite many fish (linocuts). This picture was so fun to make that I might still one more, almost as big. The size of this picture is 100 x 60 cm, and I think this is going to the Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition.

A work this big caused some problems with space in my small work room, there was a table just big enough, but drying this in the bathroom was tricky, and now the picture hangs on the wall over other linos and is waiting what happens in the future.

The name of the picture is  "Unohduin, uin unelmiin, on hyvä olla täällä" / "I Forgot, I Swam In Dreams, It's Good To Be Here" after a song by Juice, Deep See Diver.

VETTÄ JA VALOA / WATER & LIGHT

 

Isoon sekatekniikkatyöhön rantavedestä tuli nyt valonsäteitä eli pehmeää pastellia. Kuvaan on  lisätty hurja määrä pienempiä linopiirroksia kaloista, korallia ja kuplia. Tilaahan tässä kuvassa on 100 x 60 cm.

In the big mixed media work about the shore water appeared now beams of light i.e. soft pastel. I also added a huge amount of small linocut fish, coral and bubbles. And there is space in this picture, 100 x 60 cm.

PASTELLIVETTÄ / PASTEL WATER

 Ensimmäinen kerros pehmeää sinistä pastellia vedeksi on levitetty paperille. Alaosan pohja kivineen on jo tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Muutama kala ja ylosan ranta linopiirroksina on vedostettu jo aiemmin. Edelleen hiukan hirvittää, miten iso tämä kuva oikein  on - 100 x 60 cm.

The first layer of soft blue pastel for the water has been spread on the paper. The bottom with its stones is already done at the lower paper of the paper with soft pastels. A few fish and the beach as linocuts have been printed already earlier. Still I´m a bit terrified, how big is this picture really - 100 x 60 cm.

ISO VEDENALAINEN MAAILMA / BIG UNDERWATER WORLD

 Aloitin uutta kolmatta sekatekniikkatyötä vedenalaisesta maailmasta. Ja tästä on tulossa minun mittakaavallani iso, 60 x 100 cm. Kaloja ja simpukoita tuntuu tähän kokoon mahtuvan. Pelottavaa hiukan, mitä tästä oikein tulee!!

I started to make the third mixedmedia work about the underwater world. And this will me big in my scale, 60 x 100 cm. Fish and shells seem to fit to this size quite a lot. A bit frightening, what will this really be!!

ASKEL PAINUU POHJAN KORALLIIN / STEP SINKS INTO THE BOTTOM CORAL

 Toinen versio kaloista veden alla Tahmelan rannassa on hiukan rauhallisempi kuin ensimmäinen, jossa testasin valon heijastuksia ja kiillettä. Kuvan yläosassa on linopiirrros Tahmelan rannasta Pispalan taloineen ja kasvipalstoineen. Kalat ja simpukat ovat myös linopiirroksia, joista isommat vedostin ennen pastellipiirrosta sinivihreästä vedestä. Lopuksi vedostin vielä pieniä linopiirroksia kaloista kuin leimasimella ja sitten piirsin vesikasveja ja kuplia pastellikynillä ja valkoisella Posca-tussilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Nyt jo mielessä muhii suurempia versioita samasta aiheesta.

The second version of fish under water on Tahmela beach is a bit more peaceful than the first one, where I tested reflections of light and glitter. At the upper part of the picture there is a linocut of Tahmela beach with Pispala houses and plant plots. Fish and shells are also linocuts. Bigger of them I printed before adding the green & blue pastel water. Finally I printed still tiny linocut fish as stamps and then I drew water plants and bubbles with pastel pen and white Posca marker pen. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. And now already have in my mind bigger versions of the same subject.

KUPLII / IT BUBBLES

 Kuplia on kiva tehdä pastellin päälle pastellikynällä ja Posca-tussilla. Onkohan kalalla ilamavaivoja? Mitähän kuvaan vielä pitäisi lisätä, ettei siitä tulisi liian "täyttä"?

It´s nice to make bubbles over the pastel with pastel pen and Posca marker pen. Has this fish some flatulence? What should I still add to this picture without it getting too "busy"?

VEDEN ALLA - KAKKOSVERSIO / UNDER WATER - SECOND VERSION

 

Teen nyt toisen version tai toisinnon eli melkein samanlaisen sekatekniikkatyön Tahmelan rantavesistä kuin aiemmin. Kuvassa on ylhäällä linopiirros Tahmelan rannasta (erilainen kuin ensimmäisessä versiossa) ja vedessä joukko linopiirroksia kaloista ja simpukoista. Pohjalla on kiviä. Aluksi kokeilen kaloja hiukan eri paikoissa, vedostan ainakin suurimmat paikalleen ja teen veden pehmeillä pastelleilla vasta kun kalat ovat kuivuneet.

I'm making now a second version or repeat i.e. almost identical mixed media work of Tahmela beach waters as before. In this picture there is up a linocut of Tahmela beach (different that in the first version), and in the water there are some linocuts of fish and shells. There are stones at the bottom. At the beginning I test fishes in a bit different places, I print at least the bigger ones on their spots and I make the water with soft pastels after the fish are dry.

VEDESTÄ NOUSEE KASVI / PLANT RISING FROM WATER

 

Nyt taitaa olla valmis tämä testikappale kaloista veden alla Tahmelan rannassa. Ihan rantaan lisäsin vielä kiillettä ja vaaleampia valoraitoja. Taidan tehdä melkein samanlaisen ilman noita kiillteitä, hiukan rauhallisemman ehkä. Tämän version nimeksi tuli Kari Peitsamon  kappaleesta "Vedestä nousee kasvi". Kuvan koko on  53 x 30 cm.

Now I think this test version of fish under the water on Tahmela beach is ready. Just by the shore I added still glitter and brighter light stripes. I might make another one almost the same but without those glitters, a bit calmer perhaps. The name for this version is from a song by Kari Peitsamo: "Plant Rising From Water". The size of the picture is 53 x 30 cm.
