JONAKIN AAMUNA ENNEN SARASTUSTA / ONE MORNING BEFORE DAWN

"Jonakin aamuna ennen sarastusta" on tämän lino & pastellityön nimi. Tämäkin kuuluu sarjaani kuvia, jotka ovat saaneet nimensä Juicen musiikista. Kissoja tässä kuvassa riittää, sekä Pyynikin penkillä että taivaalla. Itselleni oli yllätys, että pinkki väri tuntuu jotenkin mystiseltä, aamun sarastukselta. Tämä työ on menossa Villa Armas-gallerian naivistinäyttelyyn yhden sieltä myydyn tilalle.

"One Morning Before Dawn" is the name of this linocut & pastel. This one is also part of my series of pictures named after Juice´s music. There are cats in plenty, on a bench in Pyynikki and also in the sky. It was a surprice to me, that the pink colour feels somehow mystical, like dawn. This work goes to Villa Armas gallery´s Naïve art exhibition in the place of another one which was sold.

Kissat ovat tulossa pastellitaivaalle. Tähän työhön valitsin kolme linopiirrosta kissoista: iso kissa, jolla on siivet selässä ja toinenkin siivekäs hyvin pieni kissa, ja kolmas tuntuu leijuvan ilmassa iloisena. Nyt vedostan kissat valmiin pastellitaivaan päälle. Olen jättänyt niitä varten taivaalle hiukan vaaleampia kohtia.

Cats are appearing in the pastel sky. I chose for this work three linocuts of cats: a big cat with wings on her back and another very small winged one, and the third cat seems to be floating in the air happily. Now I´m printing the cats on the ready pastel sky. I have left for them lighter spots in the sky.

Kissat istuvat penkillä, taivaalla on suuri hopeinen kuu, ja sitten taivaalle ilmestyy kissoja. Onko siinä mitään järkeä. Aloitin uuden pienemmän kokoisen linopiirros & pastellitaivas -työn, 50 x 30 cm. Alaosassa on linopiirros kissoista penkillä Pyynikillä. Hopeinen kuu on linopiirros, jossa on kimalletta. Pastellitaivas tuntuu nyt saavan vaaleanpunaisen kajon, ehkä aurinko värjää noustessaan muutamat pilvet.

Cats are sitting on a  bench, there is a big silvery moon in the sky, and then there will be some cats in the sky. Is there any sense in that. I started a new smaller sized linocut & pastel sky work, 50 x 30 cm. On the bottom there is a linocut of cats on a bench in Pyynikki. The silvery moon is a linocut with some glitter. The pastel sky seems to get a pink haze, perhaps the rising sun is colouring some clouds pink.

Pariisilaisen Èdouart Boubatin (1923-1999) mustavalkoisessa valokuvassa on pariisilainen tunnelma ja valo. Musta kissa istuu pöydällä vastavalossa pitsiverhojen edessä. Kissa taitaa olla ihan omissa ajatuksissaan, sillä verhojen läpi tuskin näkee ulos. Mutta auringonvalo ehkä lämmittää. Arvaan, että kissalla on silmät kiinni.

Parisian  Èdouart Boubat´s (1923-1999) black and white photograph has a very Parisian feeling and light. A black cat is sitting on a table in the backlight in front of lace curtains. The cat might be completely in her own thoughts, because you can barely see out through the curtains. But the sunshine might be warm. I guess that the eyes of the cat are shut.

Kuusi kissaa tanssii Pispalan taivaalla. Oranssin nauravan kuun ympärillä on keltainen halo ja taivaanranta hehkuu punaisena. Linopiirroksia kissoista kuvassa on neljä erilaista: kaksi lentää kädet levällään, kaksi on vapaassa pudotuksessa, pienin on iloinen ja yhdellä on siivet selässään. Kuvan nimi on "Kissojen yö". Koko on 70 x 40 cm. Kaikki muut osat ovat linopiirroksia, paitsi taivas on pastellipiirros.

Six cats are dancing in the sky over Pispala. There is a yellow halo around the orange laughing moon and the horizon is glistening red. In this picture there are four different linocuts of cats: Two cats are flying with their hand wide open, two are free falling, the smallest is happy, and one cat has wings on her back. The name of the picture is "Night of the Cats". The size is 70 x 40 cm. All the other parts are linocut except the sky is a pastel drawing.

Lino & pastelli Kissojen yö on edennyt hiukan. Kissat ovat tulleet tanssimaan taivaalle. Tällä kerralla päätin vedostaa linopiirrokset kissoista ennen pastellitaivaan lisäämistä, jotta kissojen alle ei tule mitään väriä. Tämä tietenkin aiheuttaa aika paljon lisätyötä. Jokaisen kissan ympärille pitää ennen pastellitaivaan lisäystä tehdä reunat sinisellä pastellilla. Ja eikös näissä kissoissa olekin koloja, kulmia ja koukeroita! Yleensä teen ensin koko pastellitaivaan ja vedostan linoja värillisen taivaan päälle tai linoja varten jätettyihin tyhjiin paikkoihin. Nyt en uskonut osuvani kohdilleen jos jättäisin kissoille tyhjät paikat, reunat ovat niin koukeroiset.

Lino & pastel Night of the Cats has proceeded a little. The cats have come dancing in the sky. This time I decided to print the linocuts of cats before adding a pastel sky, in order to get a clean paper without any colour under the cats. Of course this makes a lot of extra work. Before adding the pastel sky I have to paint around every cat the borders with blue pastel. And these cats really have a lot of cavities, corners and twirls! Usually I make the whole pastel sky and print linocuts on top of coloured sky or empty holes left for the linos. Now I believed I could not hit the right places if I would leave empty places for cats, the borders are so squiggly.

Uusi linopiirros ja pastellityö on aluillaan. Tämä on isompi versio 70 x 40 cm. Iso oranssi kuu taivaalla on naurava. Alaosan linopiirroksessa höyrylaiva halkoo järven aaltoja Pispalan taloja etualalla. Tähän taivaaseen on tulossa kissoja.

A new linocut & pastel work is in its beginning. This is a bigger version 70 x 40 cm. A big orange moon is laughing. In the linocut at the bottom there is a steamship is crossing the waves, and at the front there are houses of Pispala. In this sky there will be cats.

TYÖT IITTALAN TALVINÄYTTELYYN / WORKS TO IITTALA`S WINTER EXHIBITION

Naivistit Iittalassa -talvinäyttely lähestyy ja avataan 1.11.2020. Siispä vein muutaman uuden työn näyttelyyn ja lisäksi aulashoppiin kortteja, pyyhkeitä, kalentereita ja linopiirroksia. Puukoulussa odotti jo osa tulevan näyttelyn töistä ripustustaan. Sain  siis hiukan esimakua. Hieno näyttely on tulossa!

Naïve Artists in Iittala winter exhibition is getting nearer, and it will be open from the 1st of November, 2020. So I took a few new works for the exhibition and also cards, tea towels, calendars and linocuts for the lobby shop. Some of the works for the new exhibition were already waiting in the wooden school building for the hanging. So I got a bit of foretaste. This will be a fine exhibition!

Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) "Red" ("Punainen") on kyllä enemmänkin keltainen kisssa, mutta Lemanin kissoille tyypillisesti paksu ja pehmeä. Red tuijottaa suoraan katsojaa päin itsevarmana ja ylpeänä. Lemanin kissoilla on myös aina pienet ja lyhyet jalat, tällä myös mahtava valkoinen leuan alus ja graafiset raidat. Kortti on hauskasti leikattu kissan malliseksi ja takana on taitettava tuki, joten kortin saa pystyyn pöydälle.

Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) "Red" is more like a  yellow cat, but typical for Leman she is fat and soft. Red is looking straight at the spectator confidently and proud. Leman´s cats always have also small and short feet, this one has also a grand white jaw base and graphic stripes. The card has been funnily cut to the shape of the cat, and there is a support at the backside, so the card stays upright on a table.

Neljäs linopiirros Saana-sadusta on Tuuli. Tämä on kuvitusta ystäväni Ulla Hakulisen lastenkirjaan Saanasta, joka etsii kadonnutta äitiään. Kuvassa Saana, kalju pieni poika ja nalle kohtaavat metsän reunassa ison tuulen. Se heiluu joka suuntaan ja katoaa sitten pieninä pyörteinä ilmaan.

The fourth linocut of a fairy tale of Saana is the Wind. This is illustration for my friend Ulla Hakulinen´s children´s book about Saana, who is looking for her missing mother. In this picture Saana, a small bald boy and teddy bear meet a strong wind at the side of the forest. It is swaying and disappears then as little swirls  to the air.

UUSIA KEITTIÖPYYHKEITÄ / NEW TEA TOWELS

Talven näyttelyt ja joulupuodit avaavat kohta oviaan koronapandemiasta huolimatta - tai ainakin niin toivotaan! Tilasinkin pinon uusia keittiöpyyhkeitä linopiirroksista. Edelleen kangasalalaisen Printscorpio Oy:n työ on erinomaista. Värit toistuvat kauniisti ja materiaali on hieno: 50 % pellavaa ja 50 % puuvillaa. Pyyhkeet on tehty Suomessa. Pyyhkeitä on tulossa myyntiin Naivistit Iittalassa- talvinäyttelyyn 1.11.2020 alkaen sekä Interi ry:n joulukauppaan Runebergin mökissä 25.11.-21.12.2020, ja nyt jo pyyhkeitä on Kangasalla Villa Armaan naivistinäyttelyssä 13.12. asti.

The winter exhibitions and Christmas shops are soon opening their door despite of the pandemic - or at least so we wish! So I ordered a stack of new kitchen towels  of my linocuts. Still, the work of Printscorpio Ltd from Kangasala is excellent. The colours are beautiful and the material is fine: 50 % linen and 50 % cotton. The towels are made in Finland. These towels will be on sale Naïve Artists in Iittala winter exhibition starting 1st of November and Interi´s Christmas shop in Runeberg´s Cottage from 25th of November till 21st of December, and towels are already on sale in the Naïve Art exhibiton in Kangasala at Villa Armas gallery till 13th of December.

UUSIA KORTTEJA/ NEW CARDS

Teetin  muutaman uuden kortin talvinäyttelyitä ja - kauppoja varten. Olen tosi tyytyväinen Tamkopio Oy:n työhön. Kaunis kartonki ja hyvä painojälki miellyttävät minua ja toivottavasti muitakin. Korteissa on kaksi uutta joulukorttia: Pispalan joulu ja kissat ikkunalla tonttulakeissa.

I made a few new cars for winter exhibitions and shops. I´m really pleased at the work of Tamkopio Ltd. The beautiful paper and printing pleases me and hope other people, too.  There are two new Christmas cards: Pispala´s Christmas and cats in the window with red hats.
