SEITSEMÄN PERHOSKISSAA / SEVEN BUTTERFLY CATS

Kesän aikana kesämökillä syntyivät nämä seitsemän sekatekniikkatyötä, joissa kaikissa lentelee perhoskissoja tai enkelikissoja. Kissat ovat linopiirroksia. Samoin linopiirroksia ovat kuut ja aurinko, kuumailmapallo sekä kuvien alareunan maisemat, kissat, usein Pispalaa, Pyhäjärveä tai Pyynikkiä. Taivaat ja pilvet tein pehmeillä pastelliväreillä. Kaikkien pienempien (50 x 30 cm) töiden innoittajana oli Lauri Viidan runo Alfhild Pispalasta ja hänen äidistään. Enkä nyt ole yhtään varma, vaikka tämä sarja vielä jatkuisi. Näitä linopalasia on niin hauska yhdistellä uuteen kokonaisuuteen ja lisätä ihan eri näköinen taivas.

 During the summer, these seven mixed media works were created at the summer cottage, all of which have butterfly cats or angel cats flying around. The cats are linocuts. Similarly, linocuts are also the moon and the sun, hot air balloon as well as the landscapes at the bottom of the pictures, cats, often Pispala, Pyhäjärvi or Pyynikki. I made the skies and clouds with soft pastel colors. All the smaller works (50 x 30 cm) were inspired by Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild about Pispala and his mother. And now I'm not at all sure, even if this series will continue. These lino pieces are so fun to combine into a new whole picture and add a completely different looking sky.

KOHOTA UNESSA PILVIEN ALTA... / RISE IN A DREAM FROM BENEATH THE CLOUDS...

 

Kolmaskin sekatekniikkatyö sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild: "Kohota unessa pilvien alta ja katsella korkeammalta". Perhoskissa ja kuumailmapallo ovat käsin väriettyjä linopiirroksia. Myös alaosan ,kissat piknikillä ja taivalla liitelevät pienet linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Taivaan ja pilvet tein pehmeällä pastellilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

The third mixed media work got also its name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild: "Lift up from under the clouds in your dream and look higher". Butterfly cat and hot air balloon are hand-colored linocuts. The cats on a picnic  in the lower part and the small birds flying in the sky are also linocuts. I made the sky and clouds with soft pastels. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

KUUMAILMAPALLO / HOT AIR BALLOON

 

Kolmas sarjassa 50 x 30 cm kokoisia sekatekniikkatöitä on kuva, jossa on väritetty kuumailmapallo. Perhoskissan siivistä puuttuu vielä väritys. Ja taivas tulee olemaan sinistä pastellia kuten muotiinpanoni neuvoo:"kesätaivas, vaalea sininen". Alaosassa on linopiirros seitsemästä kissasta piknikillä Pyynikin näkötornin ylätasanteella. Muutama pieni lintustamppi vielä on tulossa.

The third in a series of 50 x 30 cm mixed media works is a picture with a colored hot air balloon. The butterfly cat's wings are still missing coloring. And the sky will be pastel blue as my fashion input advises: "summer sky, light blue". In the lower part, there is a linocut of seven cats having a picnic on the upper platform of Pyynikki's observation tower. A couple of small bird stamps are still coming.

SIELTÄ HE KATSOVAT... / FROM THERE THEY LOOK AT THE HILL...

 

Tämä sekatekniikkatyö sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild : "Sieltä he katsovat kotoista mäkeä, kissoja koiria, tuttua väkeä". Enkelikissa (linopiirros) siellä lentelee oranssin kuun vieressä seuranaan parvi lintuja (linopiirroksia nekin kuten kuu). Alaosan linopiirroksessa viisi kissaa istuu penkillä Pyynikin rinteessä. Taivas on pastellipiirros. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm ja se on ensimmäinen sarjaani tämän kokoisia sekatekniikkatöitä.

This mixed media work got its name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild: "From there they look at the hill, cats, dogs, familiar people". An angel cat (linocut) is flying next to the orange moon, accompanied by a flock of birds (linocuts, like the moon). In the linocut at the bottom, five cats are sitting on a bench on the slope of Pyynikki ridge. The sky is a pastel drawing. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm and it is my first one in the series of mixed media works of this size.

NE TUMMUVAT, NE SAMMUVAT / THEY DARKEN, THEY TURN OFF

 Iso työ revontulista Pispalan ja Pyynikin yllä taitaa olla nyt valmis. Se sai nimen Ilmari Kiannon runosta: "Ne tummuvat, ne sammuvat, ne repeävät kuin jää". Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan taloineen ja Pyynikin näkötorneineen. Taivas ja revontulet ovat pehmeää pastellia. Kaksi tikkaa yläkulmissa ovat linopiirroksia, ja päät pon väritetty punaisiksi käsin. Perspektiiviistäö tässä kuvassa ei taida olla mitään jälkeä. Alaosan oikeassa reunassa lentää kotka, mutta tikat ovat ylhäällä suhteessa paljon suurempia. Ja revontuletkaan eivät yleensä ole noin korkeita. Mutta minäkö siitä välittäisin - no en! Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm.

The big work on the northern lights above Pispala and Pyynikki seems to be finished now. It got its name from Ilmari Kianto's poem: "They darken, they turn off, they crack like ice". In the lower part, there is a linocut with Pispala's houses and Pyynikki's ob servation tower. The sky and northern lights are soft pastel. The two woodpeckers in the upper corners are linocuts, and their heads are colored red by hand. There doesn't seem to be any trace of perspective in this picture. An eagle is flying on the right edge of the lower part, but the woodpeckers are proportionally much larger at the top. And the northern lights are usually not that high either. But I wouldn't care - well, I don't! The size of the picture is 50 x 60 cm.

TIKAT TAIVAALLE / WOODPECKERS INTO THE SKY

 

Kaksi isoa tikkaa lensi taivaalle pastellirevontulien joukkoon. Tikat ovat linopiirroksia, ja niiden päät pitää vielä maalata punaiseksi.

Two large woodpeckers flew into the sky among the pastel aurora lights. The woodpeckers are linocuts, and their heads still need to be painted red.

REVONTULET JA LINNUT / NORTHERN LIGHTS AND BIRDS

 

No nyt alkavat revontulet näyttää edes hiukan revontulilta. Kaksi isoa lintuakin lentää taivaalle. Lisäsin vielä tähtiä eili pieniä pisteitä kovemmalla pastelliliidulla taivaalle. Alaosa on linopiirros, ja samoin linnut tulevat olemaan linopiirroksia.

Well, the northern lights are starting now look at least a little like the northern lights. Two big birds also fly into the sky. I also added stars or small dots with a harder pastel chalk to the sky. The bottom part is a linocut, and so will the birds be linocuts.

REVONTULET TAIVAALLE/ NORTHERN LIGHTS TO THE SKY

 Ajattelin tehdä yhden uuden revontulityön kun kaikki aiemmat on myyty. Alaosa on aika iso, 60 cm leveä yhdistelmä Pyynikin ja Pispalan rinteistä. Levitin ensimmäiset tumman siniset pastellit ikaankuin revontulien taustaksi. Ja nyt näyttää siltä, että taivas on täynnä käärmeitä.

I was thinking of doing one new northern lights picture when all the previous ones have been sold. The lower part is quite large, 60 cm wide, a combination of the ridges of Pyynikki and Pispala. I spread the first dark blue spots of pastel as a background for the northern lights. And now it seems that the sky is full of snakes.

AAMUNKOITTOON PURJEHDIN / SAILING TO THE DAWN

 Isompien linopastellien sarjaan tuli tämä uusi aika dramaattinen työ, joka sekin sai nimensä Juicen laulujen mukaan, nyt Odysseuksesta: "Minä laivan kauneimman omistin, sillä aamunkoittoon mä purjehdin". Taivaan ja pastellin kanssa oli hiukan taistelua, pastelli kun ei niin vain taipunut tummaan draamaan. No, aika tyytyväinen kai olen tähän punaruskeaan pilveen. Perhoset saivat hiukan väriä siipiinsä. Tässä kuvassa on kaikenlaisia vastakkaisuuksia kuten tumman pilven seurana hailun hopeinen linokuu. Ja entäs nuo kaksi kissaa virnuilemassa, ei ihan rauhallisen aamunkoiton perikuvia.

In the series of larger lino pastels came this new rather dramatic work, which was also named after Juice's songs, now from Odysseus: "I Owned the Most Beautiful Ship, Sailed It To the Dawn". There was a bit of  fighting with the sky and pastels, because pastel just didn't lend itself to dark drama so easily. Well, I guess I'm quite satisfied with this red-brown cloud. The butterflies got a little color in their wings. There are all kinds of contrasts in this picture, like pale silvery lino moon accompanied by a dark cloud. And what about those two cats grinning, not exactly the epitome of a peaceful dawn.

DRAAMAA TAIVAALLA / DRAMATIC SKY

Pari perhosta ja sulkaa on tulossa pastellitaivaalle, mutta kun halusin taivaasta aika dramaattisen, niin törmäsin engelmaan. Miten oikein sijoittaa punaista, harmaata, valkoista ja ruskeaa niin, että ne eivät näytä sotkulta?Ja halusin pitää taivaan alaosan aika vaaleana, jotta perhoset ja sulat erottuvat. Syvyyttäkin haluaisin tuohon tummaan pilveen.

A couple of butterflies and feathers are coming to the pastel sky, but when I wanted the sky to be quite dramatic, I came across a problem. How to properly place the red, gray, white and brown so that they don't look like a mess? And I wanted to keep the lower part of the sky quite light so that the butterflies and feathers stand out. I would also like some depth in that dark cloud.

NÄSIJÄRVEN TAIVAS / SKY OVER NÄSIJÄRVI

 

Alalaidassa oleva linopiirros on painettu sinertävänä. ehkä osaksi siksi että kuvassa on niin paljon Näsjärven vettä. Löytyyhän kuvasta myös muutama Tampereen maamerkki: Pyynikin näkötorni, Pispalan  haulitorni ja Siilinkarin majakka. - ja yksi purjevenekin. Pispalan talojen yllä kalliolla vaanii kaksi kissaa: Pyynikin häjyyt.  Taivaalla on jo aika himmeä linopiirroskuu ja pari perhosta ja sulkaa etsii paikkojaan.

The linocut on the bottom is printed in bluish. maybe partly because there is so much Näsjärvi water in the picture. A few Tampere landmarks can also be found in the picture: the Pyynikki observation tower, the Pispala shot tower and the Siilinkari lighthouse. - and one sailboat too. There are two cats lurking on the cliff above Pispala's houses: Pyynikki rascals. There is already a rather dim linocut moon in the sky and a couple of butterflies and feathers are looking for their places.

ELOKUUN KUULAS ILTA / BRIGHT AUGUST NIGHT

"Elokuun kuulas ilta. Haiku leijuu laiturilla"-nimi tälle työlle tuli Juicen lyriikasta Talo lehmusten alla. Pidän tuosta melkein vahingossa tulleesta kuunsillasta Pyhäjärven pinnassa. Alaosan linopiirros Pyynikin näkötornista ja kahdesta kissasta on vedostettu vihertävällä musteella. Kuu, myös linopiirros on hopeinen ja siinä on hiukan oranssia. Pastellitaivaalla lentää parvi linolintuja, tikka on saanut punaista väriä. Tämä sekatekniikkatyö on isompaa sarjaani linopastelleista 70 x 40 cm.

"Bright August's evening. Haiku floats on the pier" the name for this work came from Juice's lyric The House under the Limes. I like that almost accidental moon bridge on the surface of Pyhäjärvi. The lower linocut of Pyynikki observation tower and two cats is printed with greenish ink. Moon, also a linocut is printed silver silver with a bit of orange in it. A flock of lino birds flies in the pastel sky, the woodpecker has some red color. This mixed media work is from my larger series of lino pastels 70 x 40 cm.

NELJÄ LINTUA PYYNIKILLÄ / FOUR BIRDS IN PYYNIKKI

 

Neljä isompaa linopiirroslintua kiertävät nyt kuuta kellahtavalla taivaalla Pyynikin yllä. LIsää pienempiä lintuja on vielä tulossa parveen. Kesken tämä kuva kissoista Pyynikin näköalatornin kupeessa siis on edelleen.

Four larger linocut birds are now circling the moon in the yellow sky above Pyynikki. More smaller birds are still coming into the flock. This picture of cats next to Pyynikki observation tower is still unfinished.

ORANSSI TAIVAS PYYNIKILLÄ / ORANGE SKY IN PYYNIKKI

 

Pyynikin näkötornin ylle tulee aika hento ruskean oranssi taivas. Taivaanranta tässä on melkein valkolinen. Järven pinnalla näkyy hiukan kuunsiltaa.

 A pretty gentle brown-orange sky will also appear over the Pyynikki observation tower. The horizon here is almost white. A little moon bridge can be seen on the surface of the lake.

PYYNIKILLÄ / PYYNIKKI

 

Uusi sekatekniikka tekeillä, vihreänä vedostettu linoipiirros Pyynikin näkötornista ja kaksi kissaa kalliolla. Taivaalla on iso kuu, hopeaa ja oranssia. Asettelin jo malliksi neljä linolintua.

A new mixed media work under way, a linocut of Pyynikki observation tower is printed greenish, with two cats on the rock. There is a big moon in the sky, silver and orange. I already placed in the sky four lino birds.

AAMUINEN KOI / MORNING MOTH

 

Linopiirros isosta auringosta on vedostettu valkoisena, vain keskustassa on punertavaa. Aurinko möllöttää sinisellä taivaalla Pyynikin näkötornin, Hoppa-mäen, Pyynikin rinteen ja Pyhäjärven yllä. Taivaalla kiertää parvi pieniä lintuja ja hyönteisiä, Tämä 50 x 30 cm kokoinen sekatekniikkatyö sai nimen: "Puseron sisältä lehahti lentoon se aamuinen koi" Juicen kappaleesta Norjalainen villapaita. Alaosa on linopiirros, samoin itikat ja aurinko. Taivas on pehmeää pastelliliitua.

The large linocut of the sun was printed white, only a bit reddish ink in the middle. The sun is floating in the blue sky over Pyynikki observation tower, Hoppa jumping hill, Pyynikki ridge and the lake Pyhäjärvi. A flock of small birds and insects is circling in the sky. This 50 x 30 cm sized mixed media work got its name after Juice:s lyrics from the song Norwegian Sweater: "From Inside the Sweater Flew Out That Morning Moth". The bottom part is a linocut as are the birds or insects and sun. The sky was done with soft pastels.

RAKKAUTTA, RAKKAUTTA VAAN / IT`S ONLY LOVE

Taivaanrannalle tuli hempeä pinkki kajo. Taivaalla on  paljon pieniä sydämenmallisia poutapilviä. Viisi kissaa istuu Pyynikin näköalapaikalla penkillä. Alaosa on linopiirros, taivas ja pilvet pehmeää pastellia. Lisäsin pilvien joukkoon vielä muutaman  linoleimasimella tehdyn linnun. Tämän kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Nimi putkahti Daven kappaleesta: Sitähän se kaikki on... rakkautta, rakkautta vaan!

A soft pink light came into the skyline. There are a lot of small heart-shaped cumulus clouds. Five cats are sitting on a bench in Pyynikki natural part, highest point. The bottom part is a linocut and the clouds soft pastel. I added still a few birds printed with lino stamps in between the clouds. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The name came to mind from a song by Dave: That's What It's All About... Just Only Love!

PYYNIKIN RINTEILLÄ /ON THE SLOPES OF PYYNIKKI

 

Tein aiemmin linopiirroksen Pyynikin rinteistä, kaksi kissaa kalliolla, näkötorni ja Pyhäjärvi takana. Vedostin työn mustavalkoisena. Mutta jotenkin kuva tuntui liian raskaalta. Siispä kaiversin tummia kohtia hiukan vaaleammiksi ja vedostin kuvan sinivihreänä. Nyt se näyttää paremmalta. Pari vedosta meni roskakoriin, sillä värillisen musteen käyttö on vaikeampaa kuin mustan, väriä tulee helposti liian paljon telaan ja kuva menee "umpeen" tai sitten väriä on liian vähän. Hämmästyttävää, miten väri voi muuttaa kuvaa. Nyt männytkin vihreinä näyttävät melkein palmuilta. Aion ilman muuta jatkossa kokeilla enemmän vedostusta väreillä.

I made earlier a linocut of the slopes of Pyynikki, two cats on a rock, observation tower and Pyhäjärvi on the background. I printed the picture black and white. But somehow the picture felt too heavy. So I carved dark parts lighter and printed the picture teal. Now it looks better. A couple of print went to the bin, because it´s more difficult to use coloured ink than black and white, it´s easier to get too much colour on the roller and so the picture goes "clogged" or then there is too little colour enough. It´s amazing how the colour can change the picture. Now even the pine trees look almost like palm trees. In future I plan to try more printing in colour.

JONAKIN AAMUNA ENNEN SARASTUSTA / ONE MORNING BEFORE DAWN

"Jonakin aamuna ennen sarastusta" on tämän lino & pastellityön nimi. Tämäkin kuuluu sarjaani kuvia, jotka ovat saaneet nimensä Juicen musiikista. Kissoja tässä kuvassa riittää, sekä Pyynikin penkillä että taivaalla. Itselleni oli yllätys, että pinkki väri tuntuu jotenkin mystiseltä, aamun sarastukselta. Tämä työ on menossa Villa Armas-gallerian naivistinäyttelyyn yhden sieltä myydyn tilalle.

"One Morning Before Dawn" is the name of this linocut & pastel. This one is also part of my series of pictures named after Juice´s music. There are cats in plenty, on a bench in Pyynikki and also in the sky. It was a surprice to me, that the pink colour feels somehow mystical, like dawn. This work goes to Villa Armas gallery´s Naïve art exhibition in the place of another one which was sold.

Kissat ovat tulossa pastellitaivaalle. Tähän työhön valitsin kolme linopiirrosta kissoista: iso kissa, jolla on siivet selässä ja toinenkin siivekäs hyvin pieni kissa, ja kolmas tuntuu leijuvan ilmassa iloisena. Nyt vedostan kissat valmiin pastellitaivaan päälle. Olen jättänyt niitä varten taivaalle hiukan vaaleampia kohtia.

Cats are appearing in the pastel sky. I chose for this work three linocuts of cats: a big cat with wings on her back and another very small winged one, and the third cat seems to be floating in the air happily. Now I´m printing the cats on the ready pastel sky. I have left for them lighter spots in the sky.
