JA TUULI HERÄÄ / AND THE WIND WAKES UP

Punaista tussia vielä muutamaan linopiirroslintuun ja kuva on mielestäni valmis. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta portaineen. Yllä leimuaa punakeltainen pastellitaivas ja näkyy siellä sinistäkin taivasta pilvien välissä. Kuumailmapallo ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia, hiukan väritetty ja aurinkokin on linopiirros nauravine naamoineen. Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm. Nimensä kuva sai Juice Leskisen kappaleesta Afroditen poika: "Ja tuuli herää, aurinko hieroo silmiään".

A little more red marker pens on the linocut birds and I think the picture is finished. At the bottom is a linocut of the Pispala ridge with its steps. Above, a red-yellow pastel sky flares and you can see some blue sky between the clouds. The hot air balloon and the birds are linocuts, slightly colored, and the sun is also a linocut with a laughing face. The size of the picture is 50 x 60 cm. The picture got its name from Juice Leskinen's song Aphrodite's son: "And the wind wakes up, the sun rubs its eyes".

 

LINNUT JA AURINKO / BIRDS AND SUN : 6

Nyt punaiselle taivaalle lensivät linopiirroslinnut ja aurinko. Aurinko on punainen, myös linopiirros. Lisäsin vielä auringolle nauravan naaman.

KUUMAILMAPALLO / HOT AIR BALLOON : 5

 

Punaisella taivaalla lentelevä kuumailmapallo sai väriä. Lisäsin tussikynillä keltaiset, punaiset, siniset ja oranssit raidat pallon kylkeen. Seuraavaksi vedostan pienet linopiirroslinnut ja auringon.

Kuumailmapallo Pispalan yllä ja oranssia taivaalle. Lisäsin muutaman tumman pilvenreunan, sormilla levitettävä. Pilviä on liikaa. Mutta aurinko on tainnut löytää paikkansa vasemmassa yläkulmassa.

KOHOTA UNESSA PILVIEN ALTA... / RISE IN A DREAM FROM BENEATH THE CLOUDS...

 

Kolmaskin sekatekniikkatyö sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild: "Kohota unessa pilvien alta ja katsella korkeammalta". Perhoskissa ja kuumailmapallo ovat käsin väriettyjä linopiirroksia. Myös alaosan ,kissat piknikillä ja taivalla liitelevät pienet linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Taivaan ja pilvet tein pehmeällä pastellilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

The third mixed media work got also its name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild: "Lift up from under the clouds in your dream and look higher". Butterfly cat and hot air balloon are hand-colored linocuts. The cats on a picnic  in the lower part and the small birds flying in the sky are also linocuts. I made the sky and clouds with soft pastels. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

Kolmas sarjassa 50 x 30 cm kokoisia sekatekniikkatöitä on kuva, jossa on väritetty kuumailmapallo. Perhoskissan siivistä puuttuu vielä väritys. Ja taivas tulee olemaan sinistä pastellia kuten muotiinpanoni neuvoo:"kesätaivas, vaalea sininen". Alaosassa on linopiirros seitsemästä kissasta piknikillä Pyynikin näkötornin ylätasanteella. Muutama pieni lintustamppi vielä on tulossa.

The third in a series of 50 x 30 cm mixed media works is a picture with a colored hot air balloon. The butterfly cat's wings are still missing coloring. And the sky will be pastel blue as my fashion input advises: "summer sky, light blue". In the lower part, there is a linocut of seven cats having a picnic on the upper platform of Pyynikki's observation tower. A couple of small bird stamps are still coming.

TYÖHUONEELLA / IN THE WORK ROOM

 

Tuula ja Matti Martikainen poikkesivat työhuoneellani tsekkaamassa juuri vedostetun ison (30 x 100 cm) linopiirroksen ennen sen kehystystä. Matti kuvasi noin puolen tunnin filmin tapaamisestamme ja sehän kertoo hyvin tämän linopiirroksen synnyn, tekotavan, ja vedostuksen. Video on nyt You Tubessa (Maija Kanervan työhuoneella), sieltä se voi halutessaan katsoa, siis suomeksi. Myöhemmin Tuulan ja Matin kotona pidettiin hauska iltapäivä: ripustajaiset ja taulu "Pispala klo 15.59 - Eteenpäin!" sai paikan kauniin kuvioidun kaapin yläpuolella.

Tuula and Matti Martikainen stopped in my work room to check up a just printed large (30 x 100 cm) linocut before it was framed. Matti filmed an about half an hour film about our meeting, and it is telling quite finely how this linocut was done, the way it was carved and printed. The video is now in You Tube (At Maija Kanerva's Work Room / Maija Kanervan työhuoneella), you can watch it there if you want, in Finnish. Later at home of Tuula and Matti we had a nice afternoon hanging up the picture, and the linocut "Pispala at 15.59 pm - Forwards!" got a nice place over a beautiful patterned cabinet.

VEDOSTUSTA / PRINTING

Vedostin  muutaman lisäkappaleen linopiirroksesta "Pispala klo 15.59 - Eteenpäin" samalla kun vedostin yhden tilauksen. Otin muutaman kuvan vedostuksen eri vaiheista : musteen levityksestä, kuvan vedostuksesta ja lopullisista töistä, joihin oli lisätty erillinen linopiirros kuumailmapallosta ja sekin vielä väritettiin. Tämän kuvan koko on 30 x 100 cm, ja siihen on yhdistetty viisi erillista A4-kokoista linoa. Käytin aika paksua bambupaperia, Hahnemühlen 265 grammaista, ja se onkin aika paljon käsivoimaa ja painamista vaativa paperi käsin vedostettaessa. Painoina käytän kiviä, lasipainoja ja kaulimia. Muste on vesiliukoista linoväriä. Linopiirrosten teko on siitä ihana laji, että kaiken voi tehdä käsin ja eri vaiheita on monia.

I printed a few prints more of my linocut " Pispala at 15.59 pm - Forwards" at the same time that I printed an order. I took some photos from different stages of printing: spreading the ink, printing the picture and final works, where I still added a separate linocut of a hot air balloon which is also coloured by hand. The size of this picture is 30 x 100 cm, and it is combined of five separate A4-sized lino pieces. I used rather heavy bamboo paper, Hahnemühle 265 grams, and it really requires some strength when printing by hand. As weights I used stones, glass weights and rolling pins. The ink is water soluble lino ink. Making linoprints is a lovely genre of printing, because there is so many different stages and you can make everything by hand.

UP, UP AND AWAY!

 

Taivaalla harhailee vain pari pilveä ja auringon kajo näkyy taivaanrannassa. Päivä on ollut helteinen Pispalassa. Hiukan viileyttä tuo lento kuumailmapallossa Pyhäjärven yllä. Kuvan alaosa on pastellipiirros, samoin ilmapallo, joka on käsin väritetty. Taivas on Pan-pastellia. Tämä kuva on pienempää sarjaani lino/pastelleja: 50 x 30 cm. YHden mielessä pyörivän laulun sanojen mukaan kuva sai nimekseen: Up, Up And Away!

There are only a few clouds wandering in the sky, and the glow of the sun can be seen on the horizon. The day has been sweltering in Pispala. Flying in the hot air balloon over Pyhäjärvi brings some cooling. The bottom part of the picture is a linocut, and so is the hot air balloon which was hand coloured. The sky was made with Pan Pastels. This picture is one in my series of smaller lino/pastels: 50 x 30 cm. The picture got its name after the works a song revolving in  my mind: Up, Up And Away!

Löysin kansiosta Pispala-aiheisen linopiirroksen ylle vedostetun toisen linopiirroksen kuumailmapallosta. Mutta taivas puuttuu. Tähän ei voi kuvitella kuin kesäistä taivasta, jossa on muutama pilven haituva. Siispä Pan pastellit esiin ja aloitin taivaan teon. Tämä jatkuu...

I found in a folder a Pispala-themed linocut with a print of another linocut of a hot air balloon above it. But the sky was missing. You can not imagine anything else but a blue summer sky here with some small clouds. So, out with Pan Pastels and I started to make the sky. This is continuing....

YLÖSPÄIN! - UPWARS!

 Tällainen versio 10-osaisesta linopiirroksesta "Matkaan Pispalasta" on ollut mielessä jo jonkun aikaa. Nyt sen vedostin. Tässä versiossa on kuumailmapallon lisäksi kaksi muuta osaa: skootteri ja kissa. Tämän kuvan koko on aika omituinen, 90 x 20 cm. Tämä koko voisi sopia esimerkiksi portaiden  tai oven viereen kapeaan tilaan, jossa sitä kuitenkin voisi katsella aika läheltä. Nimesin tämän: "Pispala klo 14.58 - Ylöspäin!".

This version of my 10 -piece linocut "Voyage from Pispala" has been in my mind already for a while. Now I printed it. In this version there are in addition to a hot air balloon two more parts: a scooter and a cat. The size of this picture is quite peculiar: 90 x 20 cm. This might suit for example beside the stairs or a door on a narrow space, where you could still look at it rather close. I gave this a name: "Pispala klo 2.58 pm - Upwards!"

PISPALAN HARJUN YLÄOSAT: osa 4 / PISPALA RIDGE UPPER PARTS : Part 4

 

Viides ja viimeinen versio projektissani vedostaa kaikki Matkaan Pispalasta, 10-osaisen linopiirroksen osat erikseen ja yhdessä on nyt tehty. Ensimmäinen versio oli vasemmassa kulmassa oleva kuumailmapallo yksinään, 30 x 20 cm. Toinen versio oli kaksiosainen, 30 x 40 cm,  ja siinä oli kuumailmapallon lisäksi höyrylaiva. Kolmannessa versiossa, 30 x 60 cm oli enemmän Pispalan rinnettä ja taloja. Neljännessä eli neliosaisessa versiossa, 30 x 80 cm oli yhä enemmän Pispalan rinnettä ja taloja. Nyt tässä viidennessä eli viisiosaisessa versiossa, 30 x 100 cm, taivas oikealla on jo uhkaavan pilvinen. Tämä koko voisikin olla aika kiva sohvan päällä kun se on aika matala mutta leveä. Tämän version nimi on "Pispala klo 14.59 - Eteenpäin!"

The fifth and last version in my project to print all the parts of my 10 -piece linocut Voyage from Pispala alone and together is now done. The first version was the hot air balloon alone from the upper left corner, 30 x 20 cm. The second version was two-piece, 30 x 40 cm, and there was in  addition to the hot air balloon a steam ship. In the third version, 30 x 60 cm there were more Pispala ridge and houses. In the fourth and four-piece version, 30 x 80 cm, there were still more Pispala houses and ridge. Now in this fifth ie. five-piece version, 30 x 100 cm, there is already quite a threatening looking sky on the right side. This size might be quite nice over the sofa when it is so low and wide. The name of this version is "Pispala at 2.59 pm - Forwards!"

 Neliosainenkin versio isosta (60 x 100 cm) 10-osaisesta linopiirroksesta on nyt myös vedostettu. Tässä kuvassa Pispalan harju jo nousee oikealla reunalla aika ylös. Laiva ja kuumailmapallo jatkavat järvellä matkaansa. Tämä versio on kooltaan 30 x 80 cm ja sen nimi "Pispala klo 14.25 - Laineilla". Seuraavaksi viisiosainen versio!

Four-part version of the bigger (60 x 100 cm) 10-part linocut is also now printed. In this picture the Pispala ridge is rising already quite high on the right side. A boat and hot air balloon continue their voyage on the lake. This version´s size is 30 x 80 cm and it´s called "Pispala at 2.25 pm - On the Waves". Next the five-part version!

Tämä kolmeosainen versio 10-osaisesta Pispalan harju -linopiirroksesta oikeastaan sai aikaan jo kauan itäneen idean vedostaa kaikki ison (60 x 100 cm) kymmenosaisen linon yläosan palaset yhdessä kuumailmapallon kanssa. Kolmeosainen versio meni syntymäpäivälahjana hyvälle toverilleni, entiselle työkaverille. Mikä sen mukavampaa! Tein hänelle myös pienen videon vedostustyön etenemisestä. Tämä kolmeosainen versio nimeltään "Pispala klo 14.15 - Vilkutetaan harjulle" on kooltaan 30 x 60 cm.

This three-part version of the ten part linocut of Pispala actually started my long planned project  to print all the upper parts of a bigger (60 x 100 cm) ten-part lino together with the hot air balloon. The three part version was a birthday present to my good friend, former work mate. What could be nicer! I also made her a short video about the printing process. This three-part version is called "Pispala 2.15 pm - Let´s wave to the ridge!" and sized 30 x 60 cm.

Vihdoinkin pääsin käsiksi projektiin, jota olen jo suunnitellut aika kauan. Halusin vedostaa isosta 10-osaisesta linopiirroksesta "Matkaan Pispalasta" erilaisia kombinaatioita kuvan yläosasta eli viidestä A4-kokoisesta linopiirroksesta niin, että kaikissa näkyy kuumailmapallo. Ensimmäinen on tietenkin vasemmalla oleva kuumailmapallo yksinään, jonka koko on 30 x 20 cm. Tätä olen vedostanut jo aiemminkin, nyt jokunen uusi. Uusi on nyt  kaksiosainen versio kuumailmapallosta eli kaksi vasemmanpuoleisinta linoa, joita nyt on muutama kuivumassa seinälläni, koko on 30 x 40 cm. Seuraavaksi kolmeosainen versio.

At last I managed to start a project I have been planning already quite a while. I wanted to print different combinations of the upper part of my ten-part linocut "To the Voyage from Pispala" ie. pictures of the five A4 sized linocuts so, that the hot air balloon is in every picture. The first is of course the hot air balloon alone at the left, the size of the picture is 30 x 20 cm.  I have printed this already earlier, now a couple new ones.Now a new one is two-part version, two left pieces, which there are now a couple prints drying on my wall, size: 30 x 40 cm. Next is the three-part version.

Päätin hakea tähänkin nimen Juice Leskisen lauluista, lisäystä siis siihenkin sarjaan. Tämän nimi on nyt: " Taivaastako laskeuduit vai kohositko maasta?". Tämä säe löytyy kappaleesta, joka kertoo Isadora Duncanista.

The pastel sky behind linocuts (Pispala, hot air balloon and moon) is now ready. This is quite a large picture: 70 x 40 cm , so one for my series of larger linocut & pastels. I decided to find a name also for this work from Juice Leskinen songs, so one more to that series, too. The name of this work is: " Did You Descend from the Sky Or Rise from the Earth?" This line can be found in a piece of music reminiscent of Isadora Duncan.

Joskus on vaikea päättää, milloin pastellitaivas on valmis. Välillä tuntuu, että taivaan värisävyjä pitää muuttaa hiukan ja sitten vielä lisää hiukan ja vielä vähän. Joskus taas haluaakin jättää taivaan kuin vähän kesken ja kevyemmäksi. Niin  kävi nytkin. En halunnut kuumailmapallon ja kuun taakse kovin tummaa ja raskasta taivasta. Tässä kuvassa ollaan jonkunlaisessa päivän ja yön välimaastossa, osa pilvistä on melkein valkoisia. Jostain niihin heijastuu valoa.

It´s sometimes hard to decide, when is the pastel sky ready. At times it feels that you have to change the colour hues of the sky a bit, and then a some more, and then still a little. Sometimes again you want to leave the sky a little like in progress and lighter. So it happened here. I didn´t want a very dark and heavy sky behind the hot air balloon and moon. We are here in this picture in some kind of intermediate space between day and night, some of the clouds are almost white. Light is reflecting from somewhere.

Kuumailmapallo ja kuu ? Voiko yleensä kuumailmapallolla lentää kun taivaalla on kuu? No, miksei? Ainakin mielikuvituksessa. Tässä lennetään Pispalan harjun yllä. Taivaasta taitaa tulla aika dramaattinen. Alaosan Pispala, kuumailmapallo ja kuu ovat linopiirroksia. Taivaan teen pehmeillä pastelleilla. Tämä on aika iso: 70 x 40 cm

Hot air balloon and moon?  Can you normally even fly with a hot air balloon when there is a moon in the sky? Well, why not? At least in your imagination. Here we are flying over the Pispala ridge. The sky seems to be quite dramatic. Pispala at the bottom, hot air balloon and moon are linocuts. I will make the sky with soft pastel colours. This is rather big: 70 x 40 cm.

Tätä olen aikonut tehdä jo jonkun aikaa, ja nyt sen tein. Vedostin Pispalan taloja ja järvi-sarjan linopiirroksista kuumailmapallon yhdessä kaikkien viiden alaosan kanssa. Onko niillä nyt niin kovin paljon  eroa. Kaikki viisi ovat kuitenkin erilaisia alaosastaan. Koko näillä melkein  identtisillä kuvilla on 60 x 20 cm.

I have been planning to do this for a while, and now I did it. I printed the hot air balloon from the series of linocuts of Pispala houses & lake with every five bottom parts. Is there really any difference with these pictures. Still, all five are different at the bottom part of the picture. The size of these almost identical pictures is 60 x 20 cm.

Tämä versio linopiirrossarjastani Pispala-taloista ja järvestä on ollut suunnitteilla jo pitempään. Nyt sain sen vedostetuksi. Tässä kuvassa on käsin väritetty kuumailmapallo ja alaosassa skootteri. Tässä on yhdessä kaksi vasemman laidan palasta kymmenosaisesta kokonaisuudesta. Tämän pystykuvan koko on 20 x 60 cm. Kuumailmapallon voisi hyvin vedostaa tällaiseksi pystykuvaksi yhdessä tahansa alaosan palasen kanssa. Kunhan joskus on aikaa...

This version of my series of Pispala houses and a lake has been planned already quite a while. Now I managed to print it. There are in this picture a hand coloured hot air balloon and a scooter on the bottom part. Here are two parts from the left side of the tenfold whole picture. The size of this upright linocut is 20 x 60 cm. The hot air balloon could be printed as an upright version like this together with whatever bottom piece of the whole picture. As long as there is sometimes some spare time...
