MAATALO / FARM HOUSE

Tämä aika vanha öljyvärityö on tehty ulkona oikeaan impressionismin henkeen. Kuvassa on vanha maalaistalo, navetta ja puoliksi luhistunut lato kirkkaassa loppukesän valossa. Olen tässä nähtävästi yrittänyt tavoittaa maiseman mahdollisimman tarkkaa näköisyyttä. Tämä ei sitten myöhemmin olekaan ollut tavoitteeni. Vaikka tekisin kuvan valokuvan tai paikalla tehdyn luonnoksen perusteella, mukaan tulee aina jotain sellaistakin, joka ei ehkä olekaan ihan "totta". 

This quite old oil painting was painted in the open air  in the spirit of real impressionism. In this picture there are an old farm house, a cowshed and a half-collapsed barn in bright late summer light. Apparently I have attempted to achieve as real-lookalike landscape as possible. This has not been my goal later on. Even if I make a picture based on a photograph or an on-site sketch, there usually is something that is not quite "true".

Tämä Claude Monet´n (1840-1926) herkkä pastellipiirros "Kissa nukkuu sängyllä" oli vuonna 2007 Lontoossa Royal Academy of Artsin näyttelyssä "The Unknown Monet: Pastels and Drawings". Työ näyttää nopeasti tehdyltä, tosi impressionistiselta ja melkein voi kuulla kissa tuhisevan unissaan. Valo lankeaa kauniisti ikkunasta varmasti Monet´n oman kissan turkille.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

This Claude Monet´s (1840-1926) delicate pastel drawing "Cat Sleeping on a Bed" was in 2007 in London at the Royal Academy of Arts´ exhibition "The Unknown Monet: Pastels and Drawings". The drawing seems to be made very fast, really impressionistic, and you can almost hear the cat snoring in one´s sleep. The light from the window is falling beautifully on the cat, surely Monet´s own cat.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

LUONTOPÄIVÄ HELSINGISSÄ / A NATURE DAY IN HELSINKI

Janne Laine

Helsingissä käydessäni poikkesin kahdessa galleriassa, joissa olikin molemmissa luontoaiheisia töitä.

Galleria Duetossa oli kaunis, harmoninen näyttely Janne Laineen (s. 1970) grafiikkaa. Hänen grafiikkansa pohjalla on valokuva, jota on työstetty aika monimutkaisilla tekniikoilla: polymeerigravyyri, heliogravyyri, akvatinta ja cine collé. Huimia kuvia luonnontieteellisen museon täytetyistä apinoista, meduusoista, hautausmaata ja maisemista upeine pilvineen.

Antti Laitinen: raivattu aari / an acre of forest cleared

Galerie Anhavassa näin Antti Laitisen 
(s. 1975) kuvia ja installaatioita hänen osaksi performanssityylisestä taiteestaan, jonka perusta on luonnon kokeminen ja haastaminen. Hän on esimerkiksi viettänyt neljä päivää metsässä alasti ilman ruokaa ja vettä, melonut itsetehdyllä lautalla, hautautunut suohon ja viimeksi raivannut aarin metsää, lajitellut sen materiaalin mukaan kasoihin ja työstänyt tästä materiaalista erilaisia taideteoksia. Anhavassa näin tästä metsämateriaalista lattialla olevan lajitelman ja seinälle kootun reliefin, joka muistutti aika paljon Piet Mondrianin tauluja. Laitinen on pystyttänyt tämänvuotiseen Venetsian biennaaliin Suomen paviljonkiin isoja kaadettuja ja palaista koottuja kuivuneita puita.
Oikeastaan näissä kahdessa näyttelyssä koki sen, miten taiteilija voi tarkastella luontoa ikäänkuin ulkopuolisena tai sitten heittäytyä itse luonnon sekaan ja sen armoille. 

Janne Laine: apina/ an ape

When I visited Helsinki I stopped over in two galleries, nature-themed works in both of them.
Janne Laine´s (b. 1970) beautiful, harmonious graphic exhibition was in Gallery Duetto. In his garphics the original work is a photography, which he has processed with quite complicated techniques: polymeregravure, heliogravure, aquatint and cine collé. Wild pictures of stuffed apes in a natural history museum, jellyfish, graveyard and landscapes with great clouds. 

Antti Laitinen: metsän osia /forest material

In Galerie Anhava I saw Antti Laitinen´s (b. 1975) pictures and installations from his partly performance-styled art, which is based on experiencing and challenging the nature. For example he has spent four days in the forest naked and without food and water, paddled with a self made raft, buried himself into the swamp and lastly cleared an acre of forest, separated it into heaps according the materials and made different art works from this material. In Anhava I saw from this forest material an installation on the floor and a relief on the wall, and the relief reminded me a lot of Piet Mondrians paintings. Laitinen has erected big felled and from pieces compiled dried trees in the Finnish pavilion in this year´s Venice Biennale.
Actually in these two exhibition you can experience, how an artist can view the nature like an outsider, observer or he can throw himself at the mercy of nature and among it.

Kesä Japan terassilta / Summer from Japa´s Terrace

Ystävälläni Japalla on tosi mahtava terassi. Sieltä näkee pitkälle taivaanrantaan yli monenväristen peltojen. Kaukana on metsä ja kappale järveä. Tämä pirkanmaalainen maisema inspiroi meilessäni tällaisen maiseman. Tausta on pastellipiirros ja kissat ovat linoleikkaus. 

My friend Japa has a really spectacular terrace. You can see from there far to the horizon over multicoloured fields.  Far away is the forest and a piece of lake. This scenery from Pirkanmaa inspired in my mind a picture of this sort. The background is a pastel drawing and the cats are a linocut. 

HIMMELBLAU: KESÄNÄYTTELY / SUMMER EXHIBITION

Kesän ensimmäisenä kunnon sadepäivänä voi hyvin poiketa Finlaysonin  alueella Tampereella olevaan Himmelblaun grafiikanpajan galleriaan. Kesänäyttelyssä on useita komeita Kirsi Neuvosen (s. 1960) hame-teeman vedoksia. Naisen puvun  malliin on yhdistetty maisemia, kukkia tai hedelmiä. Värit ovat herkullisia, sointuvia ja murrettuja. Peräseinällä onkin sitten yllätys: Petri Ala-Maunuksen (s. 1970) iso öljyvärityö "There is a Place in Heaven for Me and My Kind 3". Maisema on kirkas ja idyllinen, mutta henkilöt synkkiä vampyyreita ja muita kauhuelokuvien hahmoja, ja yhtä hymyilyttävän pelottavia. Ala-Maunus on maalannut myös mahtavia auringonlasku- ja pilvisommitelmia.

On the first real rainy day of this summer I found time to visit Himmelblau gallery in Tampere. In this summer exhibition there are several Kirsi Neuvonen´s (b. 1960) magnificent graphics according to the theme of skirt. She has mixed the shape of a woman´s dress to landscapes, flowers or fruits. The colours are delicious, harmonious and broken. On the back wall is a surprise: Petri Alamaunus´s (b. 1970) big oil painting "There is a Place in Heaven for Me and My Kind 3". The landscape is bright and idyllic, but the characters are grim vampires and other figures from horror movies, and as ridiculously scary. Ala-Maunus has painted also grand sunsets and cloud formations.

ART PISPALA - AKVARELLINÄYTTELY 2103 / WATERCOLOURS

Art Pispalan jokakesäisen akvarellinäyttelyn penkominen oli jälleen kerran antoisaa. Tauluja on ehkä pari sataa lattiasta kattoon. Nandor Mikola, Päivi Paunun ja Kylli Kosken lisäksi kiinnostivat tuntemattomammat taiteilijat. Tällaisten helmien hankinta ei ole rahastakaan kiinni. Vesivärityö saattaa näyttää nopeasti tehdyltä ja helpolta, mutta sitä se ei ole. Roskakoriin menee aika monta harjoitusta ennen kuin lopputulos on yleensä herkkä hetkestä kiinni saatu tulkinta. Vesivärityö ei heti katsomisesta kulu, valaistuksen mukana sen sävyt vaihtuvat ja kuva voi näyttää ihan erilaiselta kaukaa tai läheltä katsottuna. Akvarellinäyttely on auki elokuun loppuun 2013.

It was rewarding to dig once again Art Pispala gallery´s yearly watercolour exhibition. There are about two hundred pictures from floor to ceiling. In addition to Nandor Mikola, Päivi Paunu and Kylli Koski some less known artists engaged my attention. To acquire these kind of pearls is not about the money. A watercolour picture might look like fast and easily made, but it is not. Quite a number of exercises go to the wastepaper basket before the final version is usually a delicate study of a moment. A watercolour painting does not wear out fast, the hues change due to the light and the picture might look different viewed from a distance or close up. This watercolour exhibition is open to the end of August 2013.

ILONA SAMPOVAARA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Bug Girl

Ilona Sampovaara (s. 1972) maalaa ensisilmäykseltä hauskoja kuvia koirista ja kissoista. Eläimet on puettu ihmisiksi ja ne puuhastelevat ihmisten tapaan. Eivätkä nämä eläimet aina ole mukavia, ne repivät linnulta siivet, kiduttavat hyönteisiä ja tahraavat kätensä vereen. Suurimmassa osassa kuvista pääosassa ovat bulldogit, ja kissojenkin pyöreät naamat muistuttavat koiraa. Monissa kuvissa on myös pyöreäkasvoisia pikkutyttöjä, eivätkä hekään aina ole kovin kilttejä. Näistä pyöreistä kasvoista tulee mieleen Katja Tukiaisen taide. Kukka-asetelmissa erityisesti näkyy Sampovaaran nykyisen asuinmaan Meksikon perinne, mm. Frida Kahlon värimaailma. Kuvissa on hiukan satumainen ja surrealistinen tunnelma, paikoin naivistinenkin. Salovaara myy kuvista tehtyjä giclee-kopioita ja kortteja Etsy-kaupassaan. Näyttely on Art Alex-galleriassa Helsingissä 15.9.2013 asti.

The Sinners

Ilona Sampovaara (b. 1972) paints pictures of dogs and cats, that  at first glance seem to be funny. The animals are clad in human clothes and they potter along like humans. And these animals are not always kind, they tear the wings of the birds, torture insects and smear their paws with blood. Mainly there are bulldogs in the pictures, and the round faces of the cats remind also of dogs. In many pictures there are also small round-faced girls, and they are not always so nice. These round faces remind me of Katja Tukiainen´s art. Especially in the flower still lifes you can see the tradition of Mexiko, Sampovaara´s current country of residence, for example Frida Kahlo´s colour scheme. The atmosphere in the paintings is a bit like in fairy tales, surrealistic, in some places even naïve or primitive. You can buy Sampovaara´s giclee prints and postcards in her Etsy shop. The exhibition is in gallery Art Alex in Helsinki till 15.9.2013.

JARMO MÄKILÄ - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Jarmo Mäkilä (s. 1952) on käynyt läpi monenlaisia tyylisuuntauksia taiteessaan: mm. poliittisesti kantaa-ottavaa, poptaidetta ja installaatioita. Galerie Forsblomissa Helsingissä on nyt esillä parikymmentä maalausta pojista. Ja nämä eivät ole mitään söpöjä äidinkultia. Pojat tuntuvat elävän omassa maailmassaan, joka on aika kieroutunut. Tunnelma on paljas, ahdistava ja uhkaava. Luonnonlait eivät tunnu pätevän. Jotkut pojista ovat mahtavan isoja, jotkut alistettuja pieniä olentoja. Kaikilla pojilla on pitkät suorat housut ja valkoiset paidat. Mäkilä on kommentoinut kuvia kertomalla, että hänen äitinsä puki hänet lapsena juuri näin ja odotti, että lapsi seisoo pihalla tumput suorina likaamatta vaatteitaan. Mieleen tulee William Goldingin kirja Kärpästen herra, jossa yhteiskunnasta erilleen joutunut poikalauma raaistuu, syntyy johtajia, alamaisia ja outoja riittejä. Näyttelyssä on mukana myös installaatio omakotitalosta, lieneekö Mäkilän lapsuuden kotitalo.

Jarmo Mäkilä (b. 1952) has gone through many stages in his career as an artist: for example political art, pop art and installations. In Galerie Forsblom in Helsinki you can now see about twenty paintings of boys. And these are not any mummy´s cute little darlings. The boys seem to live in the world of their own, and it is somehow twisted. The atmosphere is bare, oppressive and threatening.  The laws of nature seem not to be working. Some of the boys are tremendous big, some are resigned small creatures. All the boys wear long straight pants and white shirts. Mäkilä has commented these paintings by telling, that his mother used to dress him as a child just like that and expected that the child stands straight in the yard not getting dirty. The pictures remind me of William Golding´s book Lord of the Flies. In this book a group of boys outside the society barbarize. New leaders, subjects and strange rites are born. There is also in the exhibition a model of a small house, perhaps it is Mäkilä´s childhood home.

Puut ovat runoja - näyttely / Trees are Poems - Exhibition

"Puut ovat runoja" on nimenä ihastuttavalla taidenäyttelyllä Helsingissä Sinebrychoffin taidemuseossa. Näyttely on koottu neljän valokuvaajan teosten ympärille: Kristoffer Albrecht (s. 1961), Taneli Eskola (s. 1958), Ritva Kovalainen (s. 1959) ja Pentti Sammallahti (s. 1950). Valokuvissa puut ovat pääosassa, ne ovat mahtavia jättiläisiä, ikivanhoja, kituliaita, alastomia - ne tuntuvat hengittävän. Valokuvat ovat enimmäkseen pigmenttivedoksia. Puut ovat universaaleja ja niitä on kuvattu eri puolilla maapalloa eri vuodenaikoina. Värivedoksissa sävyt ovat kuin maalauksissa. Näiden neljän valokuvaajan lisäksi näyttelyssä on vanhempia puuaiheisia maalauksia, piirroksia ja grafiikkaa. Tässä näyttelyssä aika tuntuu pysähtyvän, tunnelma on melkein uskonnollinen, kuin kirkossa.

The charming art exhibition in Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki is called "Trees are Poems". The exhibition has been collected around the works of four photographers:  Kristoffer Albrecht (b. 1961), Taneli Eskola (b. 1958), Ritva Kovalainen (b. 1959) ja Pentti Sammallahti (b. 1950). In the photographs trees are the main subject, they are monumental giants, ancient, frail, naked, and they almost seem to breath. The photographs are mainly pigment prints. Trees are universal and they have been photographed around the globe in different times of year. In coloured prints the hues are like they were paintings. In addition to the photographs of these four artists there are older paintings, drawings and graphics. In this exhibition the time seems to stop and the feeling is almost religious, like in a church.

In the pictures there are often small animals: birds, cats or dogs like in this
picture the trunk of the tree and the dogs legs repeat the same shape.

AVARUUSALUS / SPACE SHIP

Avaruusaiheet ovat kiinnostavia. Aiemmin tein linoleikkauksen "Avaruusromua", mutta tässä uudessa linoleikkauksessa on kokonainen avaruusalus. Taustan linoleikkaus on vedostettu sinisellä ja mustalla vedostettu kaksi kissaa on erillinen linoleikkaus. Koko ja tapa vedostaa kuva kahdesta erillisestä linoleikkauksesta on sama kuin aiemmassa linossa "Tulivuoren juurella". Yritin ensin vedostaa taustan violettina, mutta linovärejä sekoittamalla en saanut kunnon punertavaa väriä, liikaa ruskea. Sininen on parempi.

Space topics are interesting. I made earlier a linocut "Space Scrap", but in this new linocut there is a whole space ship. The background was pulled with blue colour, and the black cats in the forefront are another linocut. The size and the way to pull the picture from two separate linocuts is the same as in the earlier linocut "Under the Volcano". I first tried to pull the background as purple, but i did not get the right reddish violet mixing linocut colours, too brownish. Blue is better.

APILAKISSAT / CATS AMONG CLOWERS

Kesämökin lähellä on kokonainen pelto puna-apilaa. Tässä työssä pastellipiirustukseen apiloista melkein hukkuu pieni linoleikkaus kahdesta kissasta.

Near our summer cottage there is a whole field of red clover. In this work a small linocut of two cats shelter under a pastel drawing of red clovers.
