JÄI IHOLLENI HIEKKAA / SAND WAS LEFT ON MY SKIN

 

Tähän mennessä suurin sekatekniikkatyöni lino/pastelli taitaa olla valmis. Linnut ja yksi korento kiertävät taivaalla aurinkon ohi. Taivaalla on pinkkiä pilviä ja pilvien lomassa ihan vain muutama pienen pieni punainen sydän.Linnut, korento, aurinko ja sydämet ovat linopiirroksia, muu pehmeää pastellia ja hiukan pastellikynääkin. Keskiosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta ja Tahmelan rannasta. Alhaalla on pastellivettä ja pohjakiviä sekä linopiirroksia: kaloja, meritähtiä, vesikasveja ja simpukoita. Kuvan koko on aika haastava 200 x 90 cm. Mutta oli sitä hauska ja haastava tehdäkin kun vähitellen näki tyhjälle paperille syntyvän tällaisen aika pinkki/violettisävyisen (sielun)maiseman. Nimeksi löysin Juice Leskisen kappaleesta Viidestoista yö tällaiset kaksi lausetta: "Jäi iholleni hiekkaa rannan autioituneen. Voi olla, että vihdoin pääsen uneen".

So far, my largest mixed media work, lino/pastel, seems to be finished. Birds and a swallow are circling the sky past the sun. There are some pink clouds in the sky and just a few tiny red hearts among the clouds. The birds, dragon fly, sun and hearts are linocuts, the rest is soft pastel and a little pastel pencil. In the middle is a linocut of Pispala ridge and Tahmela beach. Below the pastel water and bottom rocks are pastel and the rest linocuts : fish, starfish, aquatic plants and mussels. The size of the picture is quite challenging at 200 x 90 cm. But it was fun and challenging to do when I gradually saw such a pretty pink/purple-toned (soul) landscape emerging on the blank paper. I found these two sentences from Juice Leskinen's song Fifteenth Night as the title: "Sand Was Left On My Skin After the Beach Was Deserted. Maybe I'll Finally Get To Sleep."

  

LATTIALLA / ON THE FLOOR : 19

 

Tämän ison (200 x 90 cm) sekatekniikkatyön viimeistely onnistui lattialla, sillä työpöytäni on ihan liian pieni. Pois tieltä seinällekin sain kuvan vain vaakasuoraan, poikittain. Teos tarvitsee aika ison tilan, korkeutta kunnolla. Nyt se pitäisi sitten saada kehystettäväksi Art Pispalaan. Sesse joutuu hakemaan kuvan pakettiautollaan.En uskalla kääntää linopastellia rullalle, jotta ei suttaannu vaikka onhan siinä kiinnikettäkin.

This large (200 x 90 cm) mixed media work was finished on the floor, because my desk is too small. Even out of the way, I could only get the picture horizontally, across, on the wall. The work needs quite a lot of space, with a decent amount of height. Now I have to get it framed at Art Pispala. Sesse has to pick up the picture in her van. I don't dare roll up the lino pastel so it doesn't get dirty, even though it has been fixated.

TAIVAS JA VESI / SKY AND WATER : 18

 

Tähän mennessä isoin sekatekniikkatyöni, linopastelli taivaasta ja vedestä sekä Pispalan harjusta taitaa nyt olla valmis. Ja sen käsitteleminen työpöydällä viimeistelyä varten oli ihan mahdotonta. Pitänee siirtyä tekemään hommaa lattialle.

My biggest mixed media work to date, a lino pastel of sky and water and Pispala ridge, seems to be finished now. And it was impossible to finish it on the desk. I guess I'll have to move to the floor to do the work.

PIENIMMÄT LINNUT / SMALLEST BIRDS : 17

 

Nyt on kaikken pienimmätkin linopiirroslinnut eli stampit vedostettu taivaalle. Muutamat linnut ovat saaneet hiukan lisää väriäkin: tikka punaista rintaan ja päähän, tiainen keltaista kylkeen ja ukonkorento väriä siipiin. Luulisin, että ison sekatekniikkatyön eli linopastellin yläosa alkaa olla tässä.

Now even the smallest linocut birds, or stamps, have been printed onto the sky. A few birds have also got a little more color: the woodpecker has red on its chest and head, the tit has yellow on its side, and the dtragonfly has color on its wings. I think the top of the large mixed media work, or lino pastel, is starting to be here.

PIKKULINTUJA / SMALL BIRDS : 16

 

Aloin asetella taivaalle linopiirroksia pienistä linnuista jo siellä lentelevien isompien lisäksi. Aurinkokin on jo vedostettu taivaalle, ja se on keltainen.

PINKIT PILVET / PINK CLOUDS : 15

 

Pastellitaivaan pilvet muuttuivat vaaleanpunaisiksi. pinkeiksi. Pilvien välistä pilkistää sinistä taivasta ja linopiirrokselle auringosta olen jättänyt hiukan tilaa.

Pastellitaivas alkaa nousta ison sekatekniikkayön / linopastellin yläosaan. Hiukan uskalsin jo levittää sinistä taivasta, varmaan pilvien lomaan.

Tästä alkaa taivas - auringosta. Haen paikkaa taivaalta linopiirrokselle auringosta. Ehkä oikea paikka voisi olla aika alhaalla taivaanrannassa. Lintuparvi voisi lentää oikealta ohi auringon kaartaen kohti rantaa.

This is where the sky begins - from the sun. I'm looking for a place in the sky for a linocut of the sun. Maybe the right place could be quite low on the horizon. A flock of birds could fly past the sun from the right, curving towards the shore.

RITARIPERHONEN / SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY

Tein monoprint/monotype-taustoja myös linopiirrokselleni ritariperhosesta. Näiden kanssa oli hauska kokeilla erilaisia tekniikoita ja värejä. Yleisimmin näissä on tausta monoprinttiä ja perhonen linopiirros. Käytin taustojen tekoon Gelli-levyä, jolle levitin värin, kasvinosia ja/tai pitsinpalasia. peitin perhosen kohdan muovisapluunalla ja vedostin taustan painamalla käsin paperille. Kun tausta oli kuivunut, vedostin linopiirroksen  perhosesta omalle paikalleen. Muutamassa kuvassa painoin perhossapluunan värin myös linopiirroksen alle. Joissakin lisäsin värillistä mustetta perhosen siipiin ennen linopiirroksen vedostusta. Muutam an perhosen painoin vihreällä värillä. Joissakin kuvissa on myös hopeanväristä kiillettä siivissä. Nämä ritariperhoset ovat 15 x 156 cm kokoisia, ja niitä on noin kymmenen erilaista.

I made some background as monoprints/monotypes also for my linocut of an Swallowtail butterfly. It was fun to experiment different techniques and colours with these. Usually the background is a monoprint and the butterfly a linocut. I used Gelli plate to make the backgrounds. I spread the colour, pieces of plants or lace on the Gelli plate, then I covered the place of the butterfly with a plastic stencil and printed that on a paper pressing by hand. When the background was dry, I printed the linocut of the Swallowtail butterfly on its place. On some of the pictures I pressed the colour of the stencil under the linocut. On some of the pictures I added coloured ink under the wings before printing. Some of the butterflies I printed green. There is even silver glitter on some wings. These Swallowtail butterflies are sized 15 x 15 cm, and there is about ten of them different ones. 

KISSA TYYNYLLÄ / CAT ON PILLOW

Illat pitenevät, vaikka tuntuukin vielä ihan kesältä. Mieleen tupsahti jo idea joulukortiksi. Tein linopiirroksen kissasta tyynyllä. Tyynyn ajattelin toteuttaa leikkaamalla palan koristepaperia linon alle. Tein neljä erilaista versiota, kahdessa lino on vedostettu koristepaperin  päälle, jolloin paperin kuvio (kukat tai perhonen) kuultavat hiukan linopiirroksen kuvan läpi. Punainen tyyny on sapluunan avulla leikattu pala tyynyä paperista, jossa on lumihiutaleen kuvia. Tämä on todennäköisin kuva uutta joulukorttia varten. Yhden kuvan tyynyksi leikkasin kolme palaa erilaisista koristepapereista.

The nights are getting longer, even though it still feels like summer. The idea for a Christmas card came to my mind. I made a linocut of a cat on a pillow. I thought I will make the pillow cutting a piece of some decorative paper under the lino. I made four different versions, on two pictures the lino has been printed on the decorative paper and the patterns (flowers or butterflies) of the paper are seen a bit through the lino. The red pillow is a piece of paper cut with a stencil, and it has patterns of a snowflake. This one is the most probable picture for a new Christmas card. I cut three pieces of different patterned paper for the pillow of one of the pictures.

TÄYSIKUU IITTALAN ASEMALLA / FULL MOON OVER IITTALA STATION

Tein aiemmin sekatekniikkatyön täysikuusta Pispalan yllä, ja nyt täysikuu ilmestyi myös Iittalan taideasemalle. Kuvan alaosassa on linopiirros ja yläosassa erillisiä pienempiä linopiirroksia: kuu ja hyönteisiä. Yläosan taivas ja pilvet on tehty pastelliliiduilla. Suosikkejani ovat pehmeät pastelliliidut ja uutena PanPastel-värit, jotka ovat purkeissa ja joita levitetään pehmeillä sienillä. No, lopussa huomaan kuitenkin  aina levittäväni väriä sormenpäillä. Iittalan naivistinen taideasema on innostanut tänä kesänä, ja tein tästä aiheesta tilaustyönä myös aurinkoisemman kuvan Liikaako kissoja? Tämä sekatekniikkakonsepti vielä varmasti jatkuu, sillä pilvet ja taivas ovat edelleen kiehtovia ja kuvan koko on hyvä: 50 x 30 cm.

I made earlier a mixed media work of a full moon over Pispala, and now the full moon appeared also over Iittala art station. There is a linocut on the bottom part of the picture, and on the upper part there are smaller individual linocuts: a moon and insects. The sky and clouds on the upper part are made with pastels. My favorites are the soft pastel chalks and as new discoveries PanPastel colours which are in jars and can be spread with soft sponges. Well, at the end the work I always find myself applying pastels with my fingertips. The Naïve Art Station in Iittala has been very inspiring this summer, and I made also another more sunny mixed media work called Too Many Cats? as a commission.  This concept of mixed media is surely continuing, because clouds and skies are still intriguing and the size of the picture is good: 50 x 30 cm. 

KISSA JOULUKUUSESSA / CAT IN CHRISTMAS TREE

Tämä joulukortin aihe onkin varsinainen sekatekniikka. Punaisissa joulupalloissa kokeilin uutta Gelli painolevyä, iso osa on linoleikkausta, on siellä mustaa ja punaista tussia ja kuusenneulaset on tehty vihreällä tussilla.

This idea for a Christmas card is a regular mixed media.With red Christmas baubles I tested my new Gelli Printing Plate, there is linocutting, black and red ink, and the fir needles are done with green ink pen. 

KANARIANKISSA / CAT IN THE CANARIES

Kanariankissa-hiili/pastelli/linoleikkaus, jonka tein aiemmin, sai hiukan uutta käsittelyä kun löysin tarpeeksi tumman vihreitä pastelliliituja. Nyt palmut näyttävät tarpeeksi tummilta ja vuoristossa on erilaisia sävyjä. Tämä prosessi on aika hauska: vanha kerran valmiiksi luultu työ katoaa uuden alle. Onkohan tämäkään lopullinen Kanariankissa?

Cat in the Canaries - crayon/pastel/linocut, which I made earlier got a bit of new treatment when I found darker green pastels. Now the palms look darker and there are several shades on the mountains. This process is quite fun: an old and considered to be ready work disappears under a new one. Is this even the final Cat in the Canaries?

APILAKISSAT / CATS AMONG CLOWERS

Kesämökin lähellä on kokonainen pelto puna-apilaa. Tässä työssä pastellipiirustukseen apiloista melkein hukkuu pieni linoleikkaus kahdesta kissasta.

Near our summer cottage there is a whole field of red clover. In this work a small linocut of two cats shelter under a pastel drawing of red clovers.

MUUNTAJA / SUBSTATION

Kesämökin lähellä pyörälenkki kulkee usein tiilisen pienen muuntajan ohi. Punaruskea tiilipinta on kaunis ja mutkikkaat sähköjohdot pitävät pientä sirinää. Nyt tien vieressä on alettu kaivaa ojaa johdoille. Varmaan nämäkin johdot kohta kulkevat maan alla eikä muuntaja enää houkuttele ukkosilla salamoita. Tämä kesäinen työ on pastelli, jonka päälle vedostin pienen linoleikkauksen kahdesta kissasta.

Near our summer cottage I often cycle by a small brick electrical substation. Reddish brick walls are beautiful and the winding electrical power lines keep sizzling low. Now they have started to dig a deep ditch for the wires. Surely these power lines are soon under the ground and the substation does not lure the lightnings when there is a thunder. This summery work is a pastel and the two cats are a small linocut.

KISSA DYYNEILLÄ / CAT ON THE DUNES

Kanaria-aihe kiehtoo edelleen. Nyt kokeilin pastellin ja linoleikkauksen yhdistämistä. Kuvassa kissa on dyyneillä ja taivaanrannassa kulkee joukko auringosta nauttijoita. Tausta on tehty pastelliliiduilla ja kissa sekä yksi simpukka ovat linoleikkauksia. Tässä tekniikassa se pieni vaara, että linoleikkausten vedostus meneekin pilalle ja silloin koko työ on pilalla.

Canary Island as a subject enthralls me still. Now I tried to combine linocuts and pastel drawing. In this picture a cat is on the dunes and on the horizon you can see a bunch of sunbathers walking. The background was done with pastel chalks,  the cat and one seashell are linocuts. There is one small danger in this technique - if the pulling of linocuts goes wrong, the whole picture is gone.

Kanaria-aiheinen sekatekniikkatyöni poiki tällaisenkin hassun tuotoksen. Kissa makailee hiekkarannalla, joka on täynnä näkinkenkiä. My Canary Islands themed mixed media work generated this dotty output. The cat is laying on the beach, which is full of seashells. The background was made with pastel, the cat with charcoal and the seashells are linocuts. I made a smaller study of the same idea, and in this also the cat is a linocut. This must be developed..

KANARIANKISSA / CAT IN THE CANARIES

Viikko Kanarialla antoi aiheen tähän naivistiseen sekatekniikkaan: pastellia, hiiltä (kissa) ja linoleikkausta (näkinkengät). Paratiisissa on palmuja, vuoria, hiekkaa ja näkinkenkiä. 

One week in the Canary Islands gave the idea for this naïve mixed media work: pastel, charcoal (the cat)  and linocut (the seashells). In the paradise there are palms, mountains, sand and seashells.
