Tällä kirjalla on todella osuva nimi "Kaiverrettua valoa" ("Carved Light"). Skotlantilainen Bryan Angus (s. 1959) kaivertaa linopiirroksia kotiseudultaan Banffshiren rannikolta, mutta myös mm. Istanbulista tai mielikuvituksellisista maisemista. Hän aloitti grafiikan teon vasta viisikymppisenä ja on erikoistunut brittien suosimaan reduction (vähennys) -tekniikkaan. Angus kutsuu tätä työtapaa itsemurha-tekniikaksi. Linolevylle kaiverretaan ensin vain valkoisiksi jäävät alueet, vedostetaan tämä "pohja" ja sitten kaiverretaan haluttu määrä lisävärejä ja viimeiseksi levylle jää vedostettavaksi vain tummin väri. Paluuta aikaisempiin vaiheisiin ei ole. Näissä Bryan Anguksen linopiirroksissa tekniikan lisäksi ihailen mestarillista kaiverrusjälkeä: erilaisin kuvion toteutettuja pintoja, puuta, kiviä, vettä, ruohikkoa, puita ja erityisesti pilviä ja taivasta. Kirjassa on havainnollisesti kuvattu reduction- tekniikan eri vaiheet luonnosten tekemisestä alkaen. Valo  kirjaimellisesti kaiverretaan linolevyltä esiin. Tyylikäs kirja!

Kaiverrusjälkeä linolevyllä / Markings of the carving on a lino plate

This book has really a apt name "Carved Light". Scottish Bryan Angus carves linocuts of his home district Banffshire Coast, but also of Istanbul and some imaginary landscapes. He started to make graphic art in late 2012 and specialized in reduction technique, which is very popular in Britain. Angus calls this technique suicide method. First only the parts that remain white are carved on the lino plate, this "base" is then printed and then a desired amount of additional colours are carved, and at the end there will be only the darkest colour on the lino plate. There is no return to the earlier stages. In these linocuts by Bryan Angus I admire in addition to the brilliant technique the masterly markings of the carving: so many different patterns depicting different surfaces, wood, stone, water, grass, trees and especially clouds and sky. The several stages of the reduction technique beginning with sketching are graphically illustrated in this book, the light is literally carved out on a lino plate. Such a stylish book!

LONTOON KATOT / LONDON ROOFS

Viime Lontoon matkalla hotellihuoneesta oli mahtava näköala yli Lontoon kattojen. Näin heti maiseman mielessäni linopiirroksena, ja nyt sellaisen teinkin. Kattotiiliä, ikkunoita ja erilaisia talojen muodostamia kuvioita oli hauska kaivertaa. Taivaan rajassa oleva kirkon kupoli ja uusi korkea kerrostalo ovat toistensa vastakohtia. Lontoolle tyypilliset keraamiset savupiiput ovat kiehtovia. Kuva on 20 x 30 cm kokoinen, täynnä yksityiskohtia.

Last time visiting London there was a stunning view from the window of the hotel room over the roofs of London. I instantly saw this landscape in my mind as a linocut, and now I even made one. It was really fun to carve roof tiles, windows and different patterns formed by the houses. The cupola of a church and a modern high rise building are opposites on the horizon. The ceramic chimneys typical for London are intriguing. The picture is sized 20 x 30 cm and full of details.

Kissa tuolilla (Cat on a Chair) on englantilaisen Lucy Willisin maalaus. Kirkas talvinen valo tulvii ikkunasta. Kissa on kääntynyt auringonvaloon ja lämpimään päin. Valo luo kauniin hohtavan kehyksen kissan ympärille ja tuolille. Tuolin varjo heijastuu lattialle kuin tyynen veden päälle.

Cat on a Chair is painted by English Lucy Willis. The bright wintry light is streaming from the window. The cat has turned to the sun light and warmth. The light crates a beautiful halo around the cat and on the the chair. The shadow of the chair is reflecting on the floor like on a still water. 

INTERIN JOULUPUOTI / INTERI´S CHRISTMAS SHOP

Interin (Tampereen taideteollisuusyhdistyksen) joulupuoti aukeaa taas. Vanhassa Runebergin mökissä Haiharassa on myynnissä monenlaista käsin tehtyä lahjatavaraa: lasia, puuta, keramiikkaa, kangasta, kudottua tai painettua. Tänä vuonna Runebergin mökissä on muutama oma linopiirrokseni, paljon kortteja, kalentereita 2019, loput pikatatuoinnit ja neljä erilaista keittiöpyyhettä. Kun vein tavaroita joulukauppaan, niitä oli vastaanottamassa tunnelmallisessa hirsitalossa Riitta Malinen Interistä. Takassa jo odottivat joulua Margit Hakasen keramiikkahahmot.

Interi's (Arts and Crafts Society of Tampere) Christmas shop is opening again. In the old Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara there are on sale many kind of things for gifts: glass, wooden works, ceramics, fabric, knitted or printed. This year in the Runeberg´s Cottage there are a couple of my linoprints, a lot of cards, 2019 calendars, all the remaining instant tattoos and four different models of tea towels. When I took my wares to the Christmas shop, there was Riitta Malinen from Interi receiving them in this atmospheric log house. Margit Hakanen´s ceramic figures were already waiting for Christmas in the fireplace.

WAROUX -NÄYTTELYLUETTELO / WAROUX EXHIBITION CATALOGUE

Warouxin linnassa Belgiassa oli syys-lokakuussa iso naivistisen taiteen näyttely, jossa olin mukana yhtenä noin 80 taiteilijasta. Nyt sain näyttelyn luettelon, oikean pienen helmen. Luettelossa taiteilijat ovat hauskasti etunimen mukaisessa aakkosjärjestyksessä. Mustalla pohjalla on kuva ja pieni ranskankileinen esittely (tekijän omin sanoin) kustakin. Suomalaisia oli tässä näyttelyssä tavallista enemmän, monta Iittalan kesästä tuttuakin.Tämä luettelo on ihan kunniapaikalla kirjahyllyssäni. Iso kiitos hienon näyttelyn järjestämisestä menee Belgiaan Corinne Delhaylle!

A huge exhibition of Naïve art was exhibited in the Castle of Waroux in Belgium last September till October. There were works of about eighty artists in this exhibition, one of them myself. Now I got the exhibition catalogue, a real small pearl. The artists are listed enjoyably alphabetically by the first name. On the black background there is a picture and a short introduction in French (in the artists´ own words)of every participant. You can find a lot of Finnish artists in the catalogue, many are familiar from the summer exhibition in Iittala. This catalogue has a pride of place in my book shelf. A big thanks to Corinne Delhaye in Belgium for the organization of this fine exhibition!

Kaksi Martin Lemanille (s. 1934) tyypillistä kissaa, Felix ja Daisy, poseeraa tässä maalauksessa rinnakkain. Lemanin kissat ovat aina rauhallisia, pehmeitä, usein kissanpoikasia. Silmät tapittavat suoraan katsojaan kuin kysyen: "Enkös olekin kaunis?". Näissä Lemanin kissoissa ihailee aina kaunista sivellinjälkeä ja lämpimiä värejä.

Two cats, Felix and Daisy, so typical for Martin Leman (b. 1934) are posing in this painting side by side. Leman´s cats are always peaceful, soft, often kittens. The eyes are staring straight at the viewer as if asking: "Am I beautiful or what?". You have to admire the beautiful brush work and warm colours in these Leman´s cats.

MAU!

MAU! on uusi linopiirros sarjaani pieniä A6-kokoisia linoja. Tämä kissa todella haluaa huomiosi: Mau! Onko kissalla nälkä vai haluaakohan se päästä ulos tai ehkä syliin.

Avattu lahjapaketti (The Unwrapped Gift) on maalauksen nimi. Onko sohvalla nukkuva kissa ollut lahjapaketissa? Ja onko kissa itse avannut pakettinsa vai joku muu? Onko kissa nukkunut koko ajan sohvalla, kun joku on avannut paketin ja vienyt lahjan pois? Kissojen tavat tuntien on aika mahdotonta, että kissa ei kiinnostuisi rapisevista papereista ja kiemurtelevista naruista. Kuvan väritys on aika makea, vaaleanpunaista ja vaaleanvihreää, kiemuraisia kuvioita matossa, tyynyissä ja verhossa. Kukat maljakossa toistavat samoja värejä. Tunnelma on aurinkoinen ja valoisa, kiitos siitä tänä synkkänä ja pimeänä syyspäivänä, Lavinia Hamer!

The Unwrapped Gift is the name of the painting. Has the cat been sleeping on the sofa been inside the wrapped gift? And has the cat herself or someone else opened the package? Has the cat been sleeping on the couch al the time when someone has opened the wrap and taken the gift away? Knowing the habits of the cats it´s quite impossible that the would not be interested in rustling paper and snaky ribbons. The colours of this picture are rather sweet, pink and light green, whirling patterns on the carpet, pillows and curtain. The flowers in the vase are repeating the same colours. The atmosphere is sunny and bright, thanks for that on this gloomy and dark autumn day, Lavinia Hamer!

NAIVISTIT IITTALASSA - TALVINÄYTTELY / NAÏVE ARTISTS IN IITTALA - WINTER EXHIBITION

Vein töitäni Naivistit Iittalassa -talvinäyttelyyn ja niitä vastaanottamassa oli Ulla Heinonen. Paljon näyttelyyn tulevia maalauksia ja veistoksia jo odotteli suojamuoveissan, pakkauksissaan tai nojailemassa seiniin. Talvinäyttely on vanhalla puukoululla 24.11.2018 - 31.3.2019 välisenä aikana ja auki viikonloppuisin la-su klo 11-17 (sulj. 22.-23.12.). Näyttelyssä tulee olemaan monenlaisia osia: alakerrassa valikoima naivismin klassikoita Gallupin kokoelmista, myyntinäyttely ja aulashop, joista ostokset saa heti mukaan sekä yläkerrassa Nykynaivistit: uusia teoksia kesän näyttelystä tutuilta tekijöiltä. Joulukorttipäivää vietetään 1.12. Kevättalven ajaksi näyttely hiukan muuttuu ja monenlaista oheistoimintaa suunnitellaan. Tästä tulee mielenkiintoinen näyttelykokonaisuus talven iloksi! Alla pieni kurkistus tulevaan.

 I took my works to The Naïve Artists in Iittala Winter Exhibition, and Ulla Heinonen was receiving them. Quite a lot of future exhibition´s paintings and sculptures were waiting in their bubble wraps, packages or leaning on the walls. The winter exhibition is held at the old wooden school building from November, 24th, 2018 till March, 31st,2019, and it is open from 11 am to 17 pm (closed December, 22-23th). There will be several separate parts at the exhibition: downstairs a selection of Classic Naïvists from the Gallup collection, sales exhibition and lobby shop, where you can get out straight away our purchases, and upstairs there will be small special part: Contemporary Naïve Artists i.e. new works familiar for summer exhibition's artists. The Christmas Card Day will be celebrated December, 1st. The exhibition will change a bit for the late winter and a lot activities are planned. This will be an interesting happening for winter fun! Below a small peek into the coming happening.

IITTALAN TAIDEASEMA VALAISTUNA / IITTALA ART STATION ILLUMINATED

Näin ensimmäisen kerran Iittalan naivistisen junakatoksen valaistuna. Kahdella katoksen seinällä on linopiirroksistani tehdyt kuvat, jotka on rei´itetty teräslevyille. Asemakatos näytti tosi hienolta valaistuna, jo kauempaa erotti tulosuunnassa olevan kuvan Pitsiverhon takana. Isompi, viisi metriä leveä kuva junaraiteiden puolella heijasti taustavaloaan kauniisti yhdessä Iittala-tekstin kanssa. Asemakatos näytti valaistuna vielä upeammalta kuin osasin odottaakaan. Onkohan tässä Suomen

kaunein junakatos?
Olen todella iloinen ja ylpeä, että sain olla mukana tässä hienossa projektissa Ulla Heinosen, Pia Niemikotkan ja Hannu Casténin kanssa. Naivistit IIttalassa-säätiö voi nostaa hattuaan koko naivistisen aseman toteutuksesta.

I saw for the first time Iittala Naïve train shelter illuminated. There are on two walls pictures made of my linocuts. The pictures have been punctured on sheets of steel. The train shelter looked really nice illuminated, you could see clearly the picture of two cats already from afar when entering the station. The bigger, five meters broad picture on the other side by the rails was reflecting light beautifully together with the Iittala text. The train shelter illuminated was even more amazing than I could expect. Might this be the most beautiful train shelter in Finland? 
I´m really happy and proud that I got involved with this fine project with Ulla Heinonen, Pia Niemikotka and Hannu Castrén. The Naïve Artists in Iittala Foundation can really be proud for the achievement of the whole art station.

Wendy Burken kissamaaluksen nimi on Kissa sylissä 1 (Cat on Lap 1). Tässä kortissa huomion vievät kuviot. Ehkä kuvassa on Wendyn oma kissa ja Wendyllä on sinivalkoraitainen hame. Kuvio muistuttaa aaltoja ja vettä. Kissan harmaavalkoinen turkki ja niska toistavat raita-aihetta. Nuo kissan pitkälle kurottavat tassut tuovat laiskan ja ramaisevan tunteen. Kissalla on hauska yksi pyöreä pilkku turkissaan.

This cat painting by Wendy Burke is called Cat on Lap 1. The patterns are the main feature in this picture. Perhaps this is Wendy´s own cat and Wendy is wearing blue and white striped skirt. The pattern reminds me of waves and water. The grey and white fur and neck of the cat are repeating the same striped motif. Those cat´s paws reaching far are creating a lazy and drowsy feeling. The cat has one funny round spot on her fur. 

ANJ SMITH - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Englantilaisen Anj Smithin (s. 1978) näyttelyssä Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa kannattaa lainata suurennuslasi öljymaalausten katseluun. Pienet taulut ovat täynnä minikokoisia yksityiskohtia, pisteitä, huntuja ja esineitä. Minusta tyyli on aika lähellä surrealismia, symbolismia. Värit ovat herkullisia, auringonlaskuja, pilviä ja taivasta. Paksuhuulisista, mustasilmäisistä naiskasvoista en oikein saanut otetta. Ne olivat  kuin opiskelijoiden muotilehdistä leikattuja. Grafiikan muunnelmat samasta aiheesta eri tekniikoilla olivat mielenkiintoisia. Museon alakerrasta löytyy Sara Hildénin taidehankintoja, ja ne ovatkin oikeita helmiä: Picassoa, Bonnardia, Chricoa, Baconia, ja historian havinaahan siinä kuului, kun katseli näitä teoksia niiden alkuperäisissä kehyksissään vieri vieressä.

It´s advisable to borrow a magnifying glass when looking at English Anj Smith´s (b. 1978) oil painting at the exhibition in  Sara Hildén´s Art Museum in Tampere. The small paintings are full of tiny details, dots, veils and objects. To my mind the style was quite like Surrealism or Symbolism. The colours were delicious, sunsets, clouds and sky. I didn´t quite get the idea of the faces of women with meaty lips and black circled eyes, a bit like student works inspired by fashion magazines. The several variants with different graphics techniques of the same subject were interesting. Downstairs at the museum there were Sara Hildén´s acquisitions, and they were true treasures: Picasso, Bonnardi, Chrico, Bacon, and you really experience the sigh of history watching these masterpieces in  their original frames side by side.
