NAIVISMIN TALVI 2026/2027

Naivistit Iittalassa - Naivismin talvi 2026/27 avautuu 14. marraskuuta.

Linopiirroksia, kortteja, pyyhkeitä ynnä muuta vietiin kuormallinen.

Omia linopiirroksia tulee olemaan puukoulun yläkerran Taidelainaamossa muiden nykynaivistien joukossa, ostokset saa heti mukaan. Myös aulapuodista saa hankinnat heti mukaan.

Alakerrassa ilahduttavat useat erikoisnäyttelyt. Pari niistä oli jo melkein valmiina.

Outi Heiskasen grafiikkaa pitää tarkastella hitaasti, paljon yksityiskohtia, erilaisia eläinhahmoja, satumainen herkkä tunnelma.

Kikka Nyrénin kissoja ja muitakin aiheita on hauskasti alun yksinkertaisista muodoista ja väreistä uusiin yksityiskohtia pursuaviin väri-ilotteluihin.

Näyttely on avoinna 28.2.2027 asti.

Naivistit Iittalassa – "The Winter of Naive Art 2026/27" opens on November 14th.

A whole load of items—linocuts, cards, towels, and more—was brought along.

My own linocuts will be available in the Art Rental Gallery (Taidelainaamo) upstairs in the old wooden schoolhouse, alongside works by other contemporary naivist artists; purchases can be taken home immediately. Items bought in the lobby shop can also be taken home right away.

Downstairs, several special exhibitions await, a couple of which were already nearly ready.

The graphic art of Outi Heiskanen invites slow, careful observation—it is full of detail, featuring various animal figures and a delicate, fairytale-like atmosphere.

Kikka Nyrén’s works—depicting cats and other subjects—show a delightful evolution, ranging from simple initial forms and colors to vibrant, color-filled compositions bursting with detail.

The exhibition is open until February 28, 2027.

KISSAKORTTI: 698 / CAT CARD: 698 - Edward Lear

Silmät ymmyrkäisinä tällä raitaisella, paksulla kissalla. Kuvan on tehnyt englantilainen kirjailija, kuvittaja ja taiteilija Edward Lear (1812-1888).

"C-kirjain nonsense-aakkosista".

*******************

This striped, chubby cat has wide, round eyes. The image is a drawing by the English author, illustrator, and artist Edward Lear (1812-1888), from his "Nonsense Alphabet"—specifically the letter 'C'. Here, 'C' stands for the beginning of the word "Cat." Its broken tail is truly endearing; no wonder it’s a little frightened. The poem that accompanied the illustration goes:
"C was a lovely Pussy Cat, its eyes were large and pale;
And on its back it had some stripes ,and several on his tail."

KIMMELSIIPI / GLOSSY-WING : 2

Tein suurimmille korennoille sapluunat. Niiden avulla taivaalle levitettävälle pastellille pystyisin jättämään valkoiset tai ainakin vaaleammat kohdat itse korentojen vedostamiselle. Korennot lentävät kaikki kohti kuuta.

************

I made stencils for the largest dragonflies. Using these, I could leave white—or at least lighter—areas in the pastel applied to the sky, specifically for printing the dragonflies themselves. All the dragonflies are flying toward the moon.

KIMMELSIIPI / GLOSSY-WING :1

Taivas tulee olemaan pastellia. Oranssi kuu on linopiirros,

***************

In the midst of Finland’s darkest and grayest season, it is tempting to start a new mixed-media piece featuring dragonflies—of various sizes and, no doubt, various colors. I arranged my linocut prints of dragonflies upside down around a large linocut of Pispala. For once, I realized right from the start that the dragonflies needed to be upside down—that is, positioned exactly as they appear when printed onto paper. The sky will be pastel-colored. The orange moon is a linocut.

JOULUKORTTI / CHRISTMAS CARD

***********

I had a Christmas card printed at Tamkopio featuring a red sky—the sky was such a festive, Christmas-red color. I learned that for an A5-sized card, the image can be set to fill the entire A5 space, edge to edge. The print quality is excellent, and the card actually looks larger than A5. That said, the black stone tabletop in the background doesn't really do the image any favors.

Id like to wish everyone a Happy Halloween with a photo of one of the very last tomatoes from my summer harvest. For this image, AI generated a new background to replace the original marble tabletop—and it turned out quite beautiful. I just seem to struggle a bit with the relationship between art and AI.

Kissakortti: 697 / Cat Card: 697 - Ludoovic-Rodo Pissarro

Ranskalaisen Ludovic-Rodo Pissarron (1878-1952) puupiirroksen nimi on Lisenssi /La Lisense. Nimi viittaa varmasti kissaan, jolla on oikeus nukkua emäntänsä sylissä kun tämä lukee lehteä. Puupiirroksessa on kauniisti kuvattu valot ja varjot. Tummat ja vaaleat alueet rajaavat hienosti naisen ja hänen nojatuolinsa. Kuva on tehty vuonna 1919.

*******************

The woodcut by the Frenchman Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro (1878–1952) is titled *La Licence* (The License). The title almost certainly refers to the cat, which has the "license"—or the privilege—to sleep on its owner’s lap while she reads a newspaper. The woodcut features a beautiful rendering of light and shadow; the interplay of dark and light areas elegantly defines the woman and her armchair. The work was created in 1919. "Rodo" was the son of the renowned Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, and one can sense traces of his father’s style in this piece.

KESÄN VIIMEISET KUKAT / LAST FLOWERS OF THE SUMMER

Kukkia, kukkia vielä muutama mökillä. Nautitaan!

Flowers, flowers still a few at the cottage. Let´s enjoy!

Näyttely on avoinna 28.10.2026 asti.

*****************

At Galleria Saskia, I stopped by to see the *Kana* (Chicken) exhibition. The concept is that all seven members of the *Kana* group keep—or have kept—chickens. Consequently, the exhibition features numerous chicken sculptures—mostly ceramic, some even colored—as well as drawings of chickens. There are also eggs, including one that is truly massive. What I found most charming were the silicone casts of egg cartons by Krister Kråhn and Hannamari Matikainen; an entire wall covered in them looked reminiscent of ancient columns. A pile of eggs had also tumbled onto the floor from a pipe. The exhibition is open until October 28, 2026.

PUNAINEN / RED : 5

Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm. Nimeksi kuvalle tuli Juice Leskisen Kappaleesta Tampere By Night säe: "Katson joka yö tähänkin kuvastimeen, ja on peilissä vika jos kasvoni vetäytyy punaan". Kuvan alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta, kuukin on linopiirros samoin kuin noin 30 linopiirrosta linnuista. Naapurin punaisena hehkuvan pensaan innoittama taivas on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla.

**************

A Christmas-red sky, an orange moon, and a flock of birds above Pispala—the piece is now complete. It measures 50 x 60 cm. The title is taken from a line in the song "Tampere By Night" by Juice Leskinen: "Every night I gaze into this looking-glass, too; and if my face turns red, the fault lies with the mirror." The lower part of the work features a linocut of the Pispala ridge; the moon is also a linocut, as are the approximately 30 linocuts of birds. The sky, inspired by a neighbor’s bush that glows a deep red, was created using soft pastels.

Kissakortti: 696 / Cat Card: 696 : Edward Penfield

Yhdysvaltalainen kuvittaja Edward Penfield (1866-1925) on tehnyt tämän kirjankannen maanmiehensä, toimittajan ja sotakirjeenvaihtajan Richard Harding Davisin kirjaan About Paris tämän matkasta Ranskan pääkaupunkiin 1800-luvun lopulla.

**********************

American illustrator Edward Penfield (1866–1925) created this book cover for *About Paris*—a work by American journalist and war correspondent Richard Harding Davis recounting his travels to the French capital in the late 19th century. The image is a chromolithograph, a popular technique before color offset printing superseded it in the 1930s. Two black cats and the windmill of the Moulin Rouge cabaret beautifully capture the atmosphere of Paris. The forms are stylized, and the color catches the eye.

PUNAINEN / RED : 4

Puna / keltaiselle pastellitaivaalle vedostin nyt pieniä linopiirroslintuja /stamppeja / leimasimia. Pienimmät stampit olen liimannut viinipullon korkkeihin, jotta ne on helpompi painaa paperia vasten. Olisikohan lintuja taivaalla noin 30. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta ja kuukin on linopiirros.

**************

Against a red and yellow pastel sky, I’ve now printed small linocut birds—stamps, essentially. I’ve glued the smallest ones onto wine corks to make them easier to press against the paper. There are probably around 30 birds in the sky. At the bottom, there’s a linocut of Pispala, and the moon is a linocut as well.

PUNAINEN / RED: 3

****************

Now the pastel sky over Pispala is taking on the vivid red and yellow hues I had in my mind. A flock of small linocut birds will likely soon be flying across the sky. Perhaps the inspiration for this sky was the neighbor’s cherry tree in its autumn colors, which I can see from my studio window.

PUNAINEN / RED : 2

*******************

A pastel sky is now beginning to emerge behind the linocut outlines of the Pispala ridge and the moon. I’ve already sketched in some yellow and red pastel. At this stage, the work feels almost impossible; the colors in my imagination are quite intense, yet this looks rather bland.

Kissakortti: 695 / Cat Card: 695 - Tuuni Turula

***********

I bought this large card (or small poster) featuring a black cat at Gallery Koppelo. The exhibition showcased Tuuni Turula’s charming cat paintings, with cat-themed graphic art displayed upstairs. This black cat is strutting along—perhaps on a sloping surface—and casting a red shadow. The cat is staring with narrowed eyes; it’s best not to get too close.

Nautitaan!

The early-winter Naivist art exhibition opened yesterday at Galleria Art Villa Armas in Kangasala; it runs until December 13, 2026, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It is a wonderful place featuring 11 Naivist artists, some of whom I was delighted to meet at the opening. In the photo, gallerist Auli Tikkala is introducing the exhibition, while Raija Nokkala, Anna-Liisa Hakkarainen, and I watch as Eino Viikilä demonstrates the shooting of a wolf that has snatched a dog. It was lovely to run into Heidi Martikainen in front of my own display wall and to chat with a few others amidst the large crowd at the opening. The walls feature cats by Ulla Kauhanen, Heli Pukki, dogs by Eino Viikilä; fish by Raija Nokkala; scenes of Turku by Kyllikki Lahtinen; and plenty of color and joy. Let’s enjoy it!
