SAAPASJALKAKISSA - PUSS IN BOOTS

Ensimmäinen linopiirroksista kissasta peilissä on Saapasjalkakissa. Väritin kissan saappaat punaisiksi käsin. Mitähän muita kissoja voisi heijastua peilissä? Tämä taitaa olla yksi päättymättömistä projekteista. Kuva on hiukan isompi  (20 x 15,5 cm) kuin aloittamassani sarjassa linopiirroksia pienistä kissoista - toinen päättymätön aihe.

The first linocut of a cat in the mirror is Puss in Boots. The boots of the cat are hand-coloured red. What evercats could there be in the mirror? This might be one of my never-ending projects. The picture is a bit larger (20 x 15,5 cm) than in the series of small linocut cats I started a while ago - another never-ending subject.

MUOTOKUVIA - NÄYTTELY / PORTRAITS EXHBITION

Sinebrychoffin taidemuseossa Helsingissä on mielenkiintoinen näyttely: Minä en ole minä -Tunnettuja ja unohdettuja muotokuvia. Valokuva ja Internet ovat muuttaneet muotokuvien käyttöä - sen ainakin huomaa tässä näyttelyssä. Vanhimmat muotokuvat ovat vakavia, varmasti kuvattaville henkilöille tärkeitä ja niitä varten poseerataan parhaimmat vaatteet päällä ja taiteilija on ehkä kaunistellutkin kasvonpiirteitä. Muotokuvat lapsista näyttävät rehellisemmiltä. Nyt kuka tahansa voi ottaa mieleisensä muotokuvan itsestään puhelimella ja jakaa se heti Instagramissa tai Facebookissa. En itsekään voinut vastustaa houkutusta poseerata parissa kuvassa muka tutkien maalausta (Facebookin profiilikuvaksi sopivia otoksia).

In Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki there is an interesting exhibition: I am not I - Famous and Forgotten Portraits. Photographs and the Internet have changed the use of portraits - at least that is obvious in this exhibition. The oldest portraits are serious, surely important to the persons in the paintings, and they are posing in their best clothes and perhaps the artist has embellished a bit their features. The portraits of children are more honest. Now anybody can take a photo of him/herself with his/her own phone and post it right away to Instagram or Facebook. I could not myself resist the temptation to pose in a couple of photos like studying the portrait (suitable snaps to Facebook profile pictures).

KISSAKORTTI: 219 / CAT CARD: 219

Tämä englantilaisen Louis Wainin (1860-1939) kissamaalaus on varmasti hänen tuotannossaan varhainen. Kissa on kuvattu melkein fotorealistisesti tai impressionistisesti. Siveltimenvedot näyttävät nopeasti tehdyiltä, ehkä kissa oli paikallaan vain hetken. Tyyli poikkeaa selvästi Wainin myöhemmän tuotannon tunnetummista virnuilevista ja hölmöistä kissoista, joita Wain teki mielisairautensa pahentuessa.

This cat paiting by English Louis Wain (1860-1939) must be from his early career. The cat is almost Photorealistic or Impressionistic. The brush strokes seem to be done in a rush, perhaps the cat stayed on its place just a little while. The style is very different from the more familiar grinning and silly cats of Wain's later career when his mental illness was worsening.

KAUPUNKI -NÄYTTELY / CITY -EXHIBITION

Noora & Kimmo Schroderus

Haiharan taidekeskuksen teemanäyttely Kaupunki yllätti. Tai oikeastaan kaksi työtä pysäyttivät toviksi. Noora ja Kimmo Schroderuksen valtava installaatio Maailma täytti päärakennuksen kaksi huonetta. Työ oli tehty vuosina 2009-2013 ja siinä oli ainakin terästä, ruostumatonta terästä, valettua alumiinia, valettua pronssia, muovia, puuta, betonia ja kipsiä. Teoksen voi ostaa palasina ja yhdistellä haluamiaan osia - silloinhan teos hajoaa elleivät tekijät sitten tee tilalle uusia osia! Toinen kiehtova työ oli Talli-rakennuksen yläkerrassa pyörivä video, Lauri Astalan Transit, jossa New Yorkin katunäkymät keikkuivat välillä ylösalaisin ja ääniraitakin oli kilinöineen ja naksahduksineen aika koukuttava. Tallissa oli myös Juhani Tuomen piirroksia, joiden tekniikka oli kiinnostava: geelikynä.

Noora & Kimmo Schroderus

Haihara Art Center's themed exhibition Kaupunki (City) took me by surprice. Or actually the works made me stop a while. Noora and Kimmo Schroderus' huge installation Maailma (World) filled two rooms in the main building. This art work was installed in 2009-2013 and it was made at least of steel, stainless steel, cast aluminium, cast bronze, plastic, wood, concrete and plaster. You could buy this work in pieces or compound pieces as you like - this work would be broken, unless the artists make some new parts! Another arresting work is a video installation in the adjacent Talli building, Lauri Astala's Transit, where the street views of New York are swinging upside down, and the soundtrack with tinkles and clicks is quite hooking. In the Talli building there are also Juhani Tuomi's drawings, which have an interesting technique: gel pen.

IITTALAN KESÄ 2017 / IITTALA'S SUMMER 2017

Naivistit Iittalassa - kesänäyttely 2017 oli viimeisen päivän auki 20.8. Kävin haikein mielin hakemassa myymättömät työt pois - nyt alkaa syksy. Upeaa oli huomata, että kävijät olivat pitäneet linopiirroksista. Omalta seinältä kotiin tuli vain yksi linopiirros, muut odottivat noutajiaan punaisen täplä vieressään. Melkein 60 linotyötä oli ostettu ja lisäksi lähes 600 korttia linopiirroksista. Aikamoisen työn ovat tehneet näyttelyn organisoinnissa ja aulashopissa Ulla Heinonen, Anne Koivunen ja kumppanit - suurkiitos myös näyttelyn kuraattorille Hannu Castrénille! Kävijöitä kesän aikana ihasteli puukoulun tarjontaa yli 18.000. Silmiini osuivat seinällä vielä odotelleet pari kissaa: Kikka Nyrénin Alvari ja Marjaana Orkonevan Rantaelämää. Nyt jo ajatukset kohti talvinäyttelyä marras/joulukuussa!

Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition 2017 was open for the last day at August 20th. I took my unsold works home with a wistful mind - now starts the autumn. It was really cool to discover, that the visitors had liked linocuts. I took home from my wall only one linocut, the rest were waiting their collectors with a red dot beside them. Almost 60 linocuts were sold in addition to nearly 600 cards. It was quite a job organizing and serving in the LobbyShop for Ulla Heinonen, Anne Koivunen and the whole crew - many thanks also to Hannu Castrén, the curator of this exhibiton! There were over 18 000 visitors admiring the exhibition during the summer. I spotted a couple of cats still waiting on the walls: Kikka Nyrén's Alvari and Marjaana Orkoneva's Beach Life. And now the thoughts towards the winter exhibition in November/December!

 Englantilaisen Mary Sumnerin (s. 1957) akryylimaalaus Kissa (Cat) on kirjava. Kullankeltaraitainen kissa kävelee sorapolulla keskellä vihreää maalaismaisemaa. Kuva on täynnä herkullisia yksityiskohtia ja kuvioita. Sorapolku on täynnä monivärisiä pyöreitä kivia. Kasvien lehdet, kukat ja isot pyöreät, ehkä koiranputken kukinnot on maalattu hienosti. Kissa katsoo tarkkana yläviistoon. Ehkä siellä on lintu oksalla.

English Mary Sumner's (b. 1957) acrylic painting Cat is colourful. A golden yellow striped cat is strolling on a gravel path in the middle of a green country scene. The picture is full of delicious details and patterns. The gravel path is full of many-coloured round stones. The leaves of the plants, flowers, and large round, perhaps flowers of cow parsleys have been painted beautifully. The cat is looking attentively up. Perhaps there is a bird on a branch. 

KISSA PEILISSÄ / CAT IN THE MIRROR

Pienten linokissojen sarjaan putkahti nyt hiukan isompi linopiirros kissasta peilaamassa itseään. Peili on iso, lattialla seisovaa vanhaamallia. Kissa on turhamainen otus. Mitä kaikkea peilissä vaisi näkyä? Nyt vedostettuna odottaa pino tyhjiä peilejä. Linopiirroksessa peilin kohdalla on reikä.

Now, there popped a little bit bigger linocut of a cat in front of a mirror to my series of small lino cats. The mirror is old-fashioned on the floor standing model. The cat is a smug creature. What ever would there be seen on the mirror?Now there is waiting a stack of empty mirrors. In the linocuts there is a hole in the place of the mirror.

TAIKAKISSA / MAGIC CAT

Pienten linopiirroskissojen sarjassa kolmas on Taikakissa, koristeltu, maalattu tai tatuoitu. Linopiirros on A6-kokoinen, 15 x 10 cm. Näitä kuvioita oli hauska kaivertaa kaikkein kapeimmalla Pfeil-terällä suurennuslasit silmillä.

Third cat in my series of small lino cats is Magic Cat, decorated, painted or tattooed. This linocut is A6-sized, 15 x 10 cm. These patterns were really fun to carve with the sharpest and narrowest Pfeil blade with magnifier glasses on my eyes.

Venetsialaisen Sebastiano Lazzarin 1700-luvun maalauksessa kiiluvasilmäinen kissa varastaa makkaraviipaleen lautaselta. Kissa selvästi tietää, että on kiellettyä edes olla pöydällä. Kuvassa on monenlaisia esineitä ja niillä symboliikkaa, joka kaikki ei varmaan aukea vuonna 2017. Kartta seinällä on hauskan näköinen, kuin silmät, nenä ja suu. Karttapallo on monimutkainen ja tarkkaan kuvattu. Nautintoon viittaa moni esine: persikat, viini, makkara ja kissa. Mitä tarkoittanee alareunassa oleva pelikortti ja seinällä oleva suurennuslasi?

In Venetian Sebastiano Lazzari's painting from the 1700's a cat with glowing eyes is stealing a slice of sausage from a platter. The cat clearly knows that it is forbidden even to be on the table. There are a lot of different objects in the picture, and they surely are symbols that are not opening today. The map on the wall is looking funny, like eyes, a nose and mouth. The globe is complicated and precisely described. Many objects are hinting of pleasures: the peaches, wine, sausage and cat. What might be the meaning of a playing card at the bottom or the magnifying class on the wall?

KISSA JA PERHONEN /THE CAT AND THE BUTTERFLY

Toinen linopiirros hassuista kissoista on pieni, 15 x 10 cm. Kissan silmät menevät kieroon kun se yrittää katsoa otsalleen laskeutunutta perhosta. Tein erivärisiä perhosia värittämällä musteella siipien kohdat sapluunan avulla ennen linon vedostusta.

The second of my silly cat linocuts is small, 15 x 10 cm.  The eyes of the cat are cross-eyed when it tries to see the butterfly which is landing on its forehead. I made different coloured butterflies painting with ink the places of the wings with the help of a stencil before printing the linocut.

KISSA LAATIKOSSA / CAT IN THE BOX

Aloitin uuden sarjan: pieniä 15 x 10 cm linopiirroksia hassuista kissoista. Tämä ensimmäinen on kissa pahvilaatikossa. Kissoille laatikot ovat vastustamattomia, mutta miksi? Tuntuvatko pienet tilat jotenkin turvallisilta? Vai haluavatko kissat piiloutua, jotta ne voivat paremmin tarkkailla ympäristöään ja hyökätä sitten mahdollisen saaliinsa tai isäntänsä kimppuun? Tämä linopiirros on yksinkertainen mustavalkoinen tulkinta aiheesta. Itse pidän noista merkinnöistä laatikon sivussa.

I started a new series: small 15 x 10 cm linocuts of funny cats. This first one is a cat in the box. The cardboard boxes are irresistible to cats, but why? Do the cramped spaces somehow secure? Or do the cats want to hide, so that they can better observe their surroundings, and then perhaps attack their possible prey or master? This linocut is a simple black and white version of the subject. I like those markings on the side of the box.

Henri Rousseaun  (1844-1910) kissamaalaus on tosi naivistinen, primitiivinen, lapsenomainen ja ihana. Siveltimenjäljet näkyvät selvinä. Tämä työ on ehkä tehty kiireesti niin kauan kuin kissa on suostunut istumaan mallina. Kissa on hiukan yrmeän näköinen , kierosilmäinen ja kauniisti keltaraitainen.

Henri Rousseau's (1844-1910) cat painting is really Naïve, primitive, childlike and wonderful. The brush strokes are clearly visible. Perhaps this work has been done in a rush as long as the cat has remained in its place as a model. The cat is a bit grumpy looking, cross eyed and beautifully yellow striped. 

TAHMELAN RANTA / TAHMELA BEACH

Lisäsin kaksi uutta palaa neliosaiseen linopiirrokseen Pispalan harjusta. Uudet palat tulivat kuvan keskelle ja mukaan tuli enemmän Tahmelan rantaa ja kasvipalstoja. Nyt näkymä on lähempänä sitä panoraamaa Pispalan harjusta ja Tahmelan rannasta, jonka voi talvella nähdä Pyhäjärven jäältä. Tämä linopiirros on nyt iso: 40 x 90 cm. Vedostamiseen tarvitsin taas kesämökin nurmikkojyrää, jossa on sisällä 70 litraa vettä. Paperina käytän näissä isommissa vedoksissa linoposteria, 90 g. Paperia saa sopivasti 72 x 107 cm kokoisina arkkeina. Paperissa on kiiltävä, kova puoli ja pehmeämpi, karheampi puoli. Käytän pehmeämpää puolta, sillä se imee värin tasaisemmin. Paperi on aika ohut, mutta se ei veny tai rypisty. Käytän värin levittämiseen metallista tiskipöytää, vedostan lattiailla ja kuivatan vedokset pyykkipojilla kiinnitettyinä katosta roikkuvissa vaateripustimissa. Ihana vedostusilma on suomalainen kesä, ei liian kuiva ja kuuma, sopivasti kostea.

I added two new pieces to my four-part linocut of Pispala Ridge. New parts came in the middle of the picture, and there will now be more Tahmela beach and allotment. Now the view is more like the panorama of Pispala ridge and Tahmela beach seen in the winter from the ice of the lake Pyhäjärvi. This linocut is now quite large: 40 x 90 cm. For the printing I needed again my garden roller in the summer cottage, filled with 70 litres of water. I use with these bigger linos 90 gr linoposter paper.You can buy this paper suitably as 72 x 107 cm sized sheets. The paper has a harder, shiny side and softer, smoother side. I use the softer side, because it takes the ink more evenly. The paper is quite thin, but it does not stretch or wrinkle. I use for inking a metallic sink, print on the floor, and dry the linos hanging from coat hangers with clothespins. The ideal weather for printing is a Finnish summer, not too dry and hot, suitably damp.
