Ja siinähän on oikeastaan kaikki ne asiat, joiden takia Lemanin kissamaalaukset viehättävät: kissojen nauravat naamat, pyöreät silmät, turkkien värit ja kissojen muodot, kuu, pilviä, verhojen laskokset ja kukat ruukussa. Tässä kuvassa on vielä pieni punainen pallo ja kaunis kaakelikuvio.

This painting by Martin Leman (b. 1934) is called "Two Cats in Moonlight". And there are actually all the things that I like in Leman´s cat paintings: the laughing faces of the cats, round eyes, the colours of the fur and the shapes of the cats, the moon, clouds, draped curtains and flowers in the pot. In this picture there are still a small red ball and beautifully patterned tiles.

Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) "Red" ("Punainen") on kyllä enemmänkin keltainen kisssa, mutta Lemanin kissoille tyypillisesti paksu ja pehmeä. Red tuijottaa suoraan katsojaa päin itsevarmana ja ylpeänä. Lemanin kissoilla on myös aina pienet ja lyhyet jalat, tällä myös mahtava valkoinen leuan alus ja graafiset raidat. Kortti on hauskasti leikattu kissan malliseksi ja takana on taitettava tuki, joten kortin saa pystyyn pöydälle.

Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) "Red" is more like a  yellow cat, but typical for Leman she is fat and soft. Red is looking straight at the spectator confidently and proud. Leman´s cats always have also small and short feet, this one has also a grand white jaw base and graphic stripes. The card has been funnily cut to the shape of the cat, and there is a support at the backside, so the card stays upright on a table.

Lontoolaisen Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) kissat tunnistaa heti: herttaiset pyöreänaamat, suuret pyöreät silmät ja mielikuvitukselliset taustat. Usein Lemanin kissoilla on värikkäät ja kuviolliset turkit. Tässä kuvassa "Kaksi kissaa kuunvalossa" on keltaruskea kissa, jonka naama on kirjava ja silmät siniset. Taustalla hymyilee mustavalkoinen toveri. Lattian kuviointi on joko keramiikkaa tai muovia, kukkaruukun ja vihreiden verhojen takaa pilkistää kuu. Hyvin usein Lemanin kissoilla on myös pallo, niin tälläkin tukevasti etutassujen välissä punainen kumipallo. Rauha maassa!

You recognize the cats by Londoner Martin  Leman (b. 1934) right away: cute round faces, big round eyes and imaginative backgrounds. Leman´s cats often have colourful and patterned furs. In this picture "Two Cats in the Moonlight" there is a yellow-brownish cat who has a patterned face and blue eyes. A black and white mate is smiling in the background. The patterned floor is either ceramic or plastic, behind a flowerpot and green curtains there is a moon peeping. Very often Leman´s cats have a ball, so does this cat also a red rubber ball firmly between its paws. Peace on earth!

The eyes are staring straight at the viewer as if asking: "Am I beautiful or what?". You have to admire the beautiful brush work and warm colours in these Leman´s cats.

Kuvassa on nähtävästi kissan kotitalo, sillä kortin nimi on Home Sweet Home (Oma koti kullan kallis). Lemanin kissoilla on usein kuvassa mukana pieni pyöreä pallo, niin tälläkin etutassujen edessä.

Cats by English Martin Leman (1934-) are usually stern looking, beautiful coloured or patterned, and big. And so is also this domestic cat, who has a fun white pattern and socks. She has a red band on her neck. The expression is quite self-satisfied. The cat is sitting on a mat with a red border, the mat is the same shape than the painting on the wall. In the picture there is apparently the home of the cat. The name of the card is Home Sweet Home. Leman´s cats have often a small round ball in his paintings, so has this cat one in front of her front paws.

English Martin Leman (b. 1934) must be one of the best cat artists in the world.  His cats are instantly recognizable: a peaceful look straight to the viewer, calm posture, glorious  furs, stunning colours, and there is always a small trick in the picture like here a small red snooker ball at the feet of the cat. This Loopy cat is not so interested in playing, she rather likes to pose a bit. 

BANKSIDE GALLERY - OFF THE WALL - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lyhyellä Lontoon matkalla onnistuin näkemään kaksi Bankside Galleryn näyttelyä. Viimeistä päivää oli auki Off the Wall, The Royal Watercolour Societyn ja The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakersin kesänäyttely. Ihania linopiirroksia, selkeitä muotoja, tarkkoja yksityiskohtia, hienoa värien käyttöä ja tietenkin kissoja! Muutkin tekniikat olivat esillä ja näin jopa yhden Martin Lemanin kissamaalauksen. Upea näyttely!

On my short trip to London I managed to see two exhibition at Bankside Gallery. Off the Wall, summer exhibition of The Royal Watercolour Society and The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers was open for the last day. Wonderful linocuts, clear forms, minute details, fine use of colours and ,of course, cats! Other techniques were also exhibited, and I even saw one of Martin Leman's cat paintings. Glorious exhibition!

Martin Leman's (b. 1934) cat card Her Mistress's Voice is printed in 1979, and the picture is also published in his book Comin & Curious cats. The room is dim. The door is ajar to the darkness. On the walls there are paintings of deserted shores. On a small table on the corner is a bunch of flowers. Only the ceiling lamp spreading some pallid light, the old gramophone and the white cat are illuminated. The cat is monitoring curiously music that must be quite ghostly.

This Musical Cat is perhaps originally a watercolour painting, at least the royalties for the sale of this card will be used to support the Royal Watercolour Society. Martin Leman's (b. 1934) cat paintings are lovely. In this picture the cats are painted quite simply and seemingly with ease, the background is a colour surface compiled just a few different coloured rectangles. The other cat is black and the other striped yellow, opposites. They both have similar yellow eyes and a stubborn stare. Especially the black cat's nose is finely highlighted. ********The cats are called Jasmine and Cocoa, and these are no cute creatures. Siamese cats are looking at you with their black and blue eyes somewhat displeased. The tail are forming the figure x. As a contrast to dark ears, snouts and tails the cats have soft cream coloured fur. But what is a red striped figure at the bottom of the picture, an edging of a pillow perhaps? The original picture is a small oli painting on board by Martin Leman (b. 1934).

There is a red feeling in this Martin Leman's (b 1934) painting. The large thighs of this tasty lady are in the middle of the picture, and the cat has a very satisfied look on her face when the woman stokes her head. Even the couch and curtains are suitably voluminous. The card is an invitation to an art exhibition in London in 1981.

In this card the cat has a funny black and white fur and there is on his/her end of muzzle same red as in the box. The background is peacefully bluish. Who ever has the key to the box? The original oil painting is called On the Red Box.

English Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) cats are related to each other: soft, big eyed, a little melancholy. And the backgrounds in Leman´s cat pictures are imaginative and still simple. Here the cat is lazying on a red brick wall in front of the green mountains. The name of the picture is aptly "Mountain Cat" and is is printed in 1979. English Martin Leman´s version  of a cat peeking from a box, bag, basket or a boot like in this card. This subject is very popular in cat pictures. The card is bought in 1979 and it´s colours are typical to that era, flashy and bright. The cat and the boots are red, but the focal point of the image are the bright blue eyes of the cat.

English Naïve artist Martin Leman`s cat card "The Squatter" is from the year 1979. The yellow cat has squeezed himself into a drawer of a dresser. Typical for Leman there are many details in the picture: wallpaper, floor, two hair brushes, flower vase and lace tablecloth. The cat does not seem to feel quite at home in a narrow drawer.

RONABOOK ONE - KIRJA / BOOK

Ostin tämän kirjan 1970-luvun lopussa Lontoossa käydessäni RONA-galleriassa Thamesin rannalla: The RONA Guide to the World of Naïve Art, RONAbook One, 1978. RONA-galleria oli ensimmäinen, jossa näin naivistista taidetta ja tunsin heti jonkinlaista yhteenkuuluvaisuutta tai heimolaisuutta. Internetin mukaan RONA-galleria on avattu Mayfairissa vuonna 1985, sinne en ole vielä eksynyt. RONA  on lyhenne sanoista Register of Naîve Artists, joka oli perustettu vuonna 1978. Tämän yhdistyksen tarkoituksena on järjestää naivistisen taiteen näyttelyitä, tiedottaa jäsenilleen, julkaista kirjoja ja esittelyjä sekä koota naivistisen taiteen kokoelmaa. RONAbook One on erinomainen ja innostava kirja, mutta on tainnut jäädä RONAn ensimmäiseksi ja ainoaksi naivistitaiteilijoiden esittelyksi. 

Cleveland Brown: Roundwood Park Flower Beds

I bought this book at the Seventies when I visited RONA Gallery in London by the Thames:  The RONA Guide to the World of Naïve Art, RONAbook One, 1978. RONA Gallery was the first one where I saw Naîve Art and I immediately sensed some kind of fellowship. According to the Internet RONA Gallery has been in Mayfair from 1985, I have not found my way there yet. RONA is an abbreviation from Register of Naïve Artists, which was founded 1978. The purpose of this organisation has been to organize Naïve art exhibitions, inform it´s members, publish books and presentations, and form a collection of Naïve art. RONAbook One is an exellant and inspiring book, but it may still be the first and only representation of Naïve artists by RONA.

Taploe Johnson: Almost Home

Kirjan mukaan naivistinen taide tuli Englanniksi tunnetuksi kuningattaren 25-vuotishallinnon juhlavuoden eli Silver Jubileen aikana 1977 järjestetyissä näyttelyissä. Kirjassa onkin aika pitkä esittely englantilaisia naivisteja, mutta myös ranskalaisia, italialaisia, hollantilaisia ja Belgialaisia. Taiteilijaesittelyjen perusteella naivisteille ovat usein yhteistä, että he ovat itseoppineita, usein aloittaneet taiteensa teon vanhemmalla iällä tai jäätyään eläkkeelle, aiheet ovat useimmiten omasta elinympäristöstä tai lapsuudesta: taloja, ihmisiä, juhlia, historiallisia tapahtumia, eläimiä, outoja perspektiivejä, yksityiskohtia ja yleensä positiivista, iloista tunnelmaa ja kirkkaita värejä. Kirjassa on monien mustavalkoisten kuvien lisäksi jokunen värikuva, ja niiden perusteella jokaisella naivistilla on kuitenkin ihan oma tyylinsä. Jerzy Marekin kissat ovat ihan erilaisia kuin Martin Lemanin kissat.

Jerzy Marek: The Guardians

According to the book Naïve art  was recognized in several exhibitions in England during Queen´s Silver Jubilee in 1977. In the book there is quite a long introduction to English Naïve artists, but there are also list of French, Italian, Dutch, and Belgian artists. Based on these biographies these features are typical to Naïve artists: they are self-thought, started to paint at the older age or after retiring, subject are usually from their own living environment or childhood: houses, people, celebrations, historic moments, animals, strange perspectives, details and usually positive, happy atmosphere and bright colours. In addition to many black and white pictures there are a few colour pictures, and according to these every Naïve artist has his or hers very own style. Jerzy Malek´s cats differ from Martin Leman´s cats.
