BANKSIDE GALLERY - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Bankside-galleria Tate Modernin vieressä on aina mukana taidekierroksella Lontoossa. Kesällä siellä yleensä on runsas Royal Watercolour Societyn ja Royal Society of Painter-Printmakersin näyttely. Tietenkin katseeni hakee tästä joukosta linopiirroksia, ja ne ovat aina yhtä hienoja, yllättäviä ja inspiroivia. 
Tässä otos kaikkein parhaista:  kaksi Richard Bawdenia, Wuon-Gean Ho, Dale Devereux Barker, Laura Boswell, John Pryce, Fernando Feijoo ja lisäksi Chris Salmonin etsaus + Richard Bawdenin vesiväri.

Bankside Gallery by Tate Modern is a must place in my art round in London. In summer there is usually an exhibition by Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Of cource my gaze turns to linocuts in this group, and they are always equally fine, surprising and inspiring. Here are some of the best: two Richard Bawdens, Wuon-Gean Ho, Dale Devereux Barker, Laura Boswell, John Pryce, Fernando Feijoo and in addition Chris Salmon´s etching + Richard Bawden´s watercolour. 

THE COLOUR OF WATER - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lempigalleriassani Banksidessa Lontoossa oli The Royal Watercolour Societyn näyttely Veden väri (The Colour of Water). Seinillä oli muutakin kuin vesivärimaalauksia, akryylimaalauksia, guassia, sekateniikoita,joissa mukana oli vesiliukoisia värejä. Aikaisempienkin kertojen suosikkien töitä ihastelin jälleen: Richard Bawdenin pieniä yksityiskohtia täynnä olevia maalauksia, joita on aika vaikea uskoa vesiväritöiksi, JIll Lemanin herkät kukka-asetelmat viehättivät. Liz Butlerin pienikokoisia maalauksia oli niitäkin vaikea uskoa vesiväreiksi - mestarillisia. Sue Howellsin Meow-kissa oli toteutettu musteella ja se näyttikin hiukan kiinalaiselta tai japanilaiselta. Gertie Youngin työssä oli vesiväriä, guassia ja kollaasia - herkullinen punainen väri taustalla.

At Bankside, my favorite gallery in London, there was an exhibition The Colour of Water by The Royal Watercolour Society. On the walls there were also other materials than watercolour, namely acryl, couache and mixed media as long as the there was water-soluble colours. And again I admired the works of some favorite artists from earlier exhibitions: Richard Bawden´s paintings were full of small details and it was hard to believe they were watercolours, Jill Leman´s  gentle flower arrangement delighted. Liz Butler´s tiny painting were also hard to see as watercolours - masterful. Sue Howells´ Meow cat was done by Indian ink, and it even looked a bit like Chinese or Japanese. Gertie Young´s work consisted of watercolour, gouache and collage - tasteful red colour on the background.

BANKSIDE GALLERY - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Yksi vakikohteitani Lontoossa käydessä on ehdottomasti Tate Modernin lähellä olevan Bankside-galleria. Nyt siellä oli esillä vesivärimaalauksia, ja ihan huippu: kolme Richard Bawdenin (s. 1939) kotoista maalausta sohvineen, kissoineen, kasveineen, tyynyineen, mattoineen ja verhoineen ja ihania kuvia seinillä. 
Olen käynyt Lontoossa taidematkoilla säännöllisesti. Mutta muuttuuko tarjonta Brexitin myötä? Enkä todellakaan halua palata täyttämään maahantulokortteja.

One of my top destinations in London  is definitely Bankside Gallery near Tate Modern. Now I saw there watercolour paintings, and just the ultimate treat: three Richard Bawden's (b. 1939) homely paintings with couches, cats, plants, pillows, carpets and curtains, and lovely pictures on the walls.

I have been visiting London`s art museums regularly. But will the art scene change by Brexit? And I really don`t want to go back to filling landing cards.

BANKSIDE GALLERY - OFF THE WALL - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lyhyellä Lontoon matkalla onnistuin näkemään kaksi Bankside Galleryn näyttelyä. Viimeistä päivää oli auki Off the Wall, The Royal Watercolour Societyn ja The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakersin kesänäyttely. Ihania linopiirroksia, selkeitä muotoja, tarkkoja yksityiskohtia, hienoa värien käyttöä ja tietenkin kissoja! Muutkin tekniikat olivat esillä ja näin jopa yhden Martin Lemanin kissamaalauksen. Upea näyttely!

On my short trip to London I managed to see two exhibition at Bankside Gallery. Off the Wall, summer exhibition of The Royal Watercolour Society and The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers was open for the last day. Wonderful linocuts, clear forms, minute details, fine use of colours and ,of course, cats! Other techniques were also exhibited, and I even saw one of Martin Leman's cat paintings. Glorious exhibition!

Viisi päivää Lontoosssa ja käynti Bankside Galleryssä - tietenkin. Täällä on aina mielenkiintoisia ja usein grafiikkaa sisältäviä näyttelyjä. Nyt oli menossa kesänäyttely - ja siellä useita linoleikkauksia. En tiedä, oliko aihe annettu taiteilijoille tarkoituksella, vai olivatko monet vain sattumalta innostuneet historiallisista aiheista. Samantyylisiä värillisiä linoleikkauksia oli Globe-teatterista, pelikortista ja Macbethistä, kaikki erinomaisia, teknisesti mestarillisia ja kiehtovia. Ja miten hurjan monta eri värilaattaa onkaan Jim Andersonin Origami-linoleikkauksessa?

Five days in London and a visit to Bankside Gallery - of course. Here you can always see interesting exhibitions and often also graphic art. Now there was Summer Exhibition containing several linocuts. I don't know if the subject was given to the artists on purpose or if several artist were just got inspired by historic themes. There were similar-styled coloured linocuts of Globe Theatre, playing card, and Macbeth, all excellent, technically masterful, and challenging. And how many different colour layers are there in Jim Anderson´s Children's Games VIII (Origami Aviary) linocut?

Englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin kissakortin nimi on Amaryllis. Kortti on täynnä kuvioita ja makeita värejä, vaikka se onkin linoleikkaus. Vakavan näköinen kissa melkein hukkuu tähän riemunkirjavaan kuvaan. Jopa maljakko ja kukkaruukku ovat kuviollisia. Kissan raidallinen turkkikin on hienosti kaiverrettu.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

The cat card of an English artist Richard Bawden is called Amaryllis. The card is full of patterns and sweet colours, even though it is a linocut. The stern looking cat is almost disappearing into this multicoloured picture. Even the vase and flowerpot are patterned. The striped fur of the cat is also finely carved.

Tässä englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin (s. 1939) linoleikkauksesta tehdyssä kissakortissa Roses & Freesia (Ruusuja ja freesioita) on jännittävät värit. Linoleikkaus on vedostettu selvästi kahdella värillä: tumman vihreällä ja punaisella. Väriyhdistelmä on rohkea, mutta kissan turkissa raidat hiukan hukkuvat. Kukkasissa kahden värin käyttö on hienoa, etenkin freesioissa.

This English Richard Bawden´s (b. 1939) cat card Roses & Freesia has arresting colouring. The linocut has been printed with two colours: dark green and red. The colour combination is bold, but in the fur of the cat the colours are melting together. The use of two colours in the flowers is fine, especially in the freesias.

"Jessie" on yksi monista englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin (s. 1936) kissakorteistani. Näissä korteissa on aina lämmin ja kotoinen tunnelma. Mutta se mitä eniten ihailen, ovat monet erilaiset kuviot ja pinnat, jotka Bawden loihtii linoleikkauksiinsa. Tässä kuvassa on paljon erilaisia viivoja ja pilkkuja: kissan viirujen lisäksi on monenlaisia kasvien lehtiä, kuviollinen tyyny ja pilviä.

"Jessie" is one of my many cat cards of English Richard Bawden (b. 1936). There is always a very warm and cozy feeling in his cards. But I always admire most the many different patterns and surfaces, which Bawden conjure up in his linocuts. In this picture there are a lot of different lines and dots: in addition to cat´s stripes there are many sorts of plant leaves, patterned pillow and clouds.

Hunajan sävyt ovat herkulliset ja sohvan, tyynyjen ja kissan turkin materiaalit ja kuviot on suorastaan taiottu paperille. Seinällä on hassu kissataulu ja pöydällä ehkä kissamaljakko.

It´s no wonder that this cat picture is called " Favorite Cat". The original picture is English Richard Bawden´s (b. 1939) watercolour painting. The shades of honey are delicioius, and the textures and patterns of the sofa, pillows and the fur of cat are nothing short of magic. On the wall there is a funny picture of a cat and on the table perhaps a cat vase.

Kuvassa on monenlaisia kuvioita, kasvien lehtiä ja piikikkäitä varsia - jakkaran pallojalat käpälineen ovat hienot. Kissa tuntuu silti aika surumieliseltä, ehkä tämä johtuu myrkynvihreästä väristä. Tässä linoleikkauksessa on varmaan kuva vedostettu kahdesta eri linoleikkauksesta - tausta ja kissa eri väreillä.

This is one of English Richard Bawden`s cat cards from my box. I admire here especially the technique of  linocutting. There are many patterns in this picture, leaves of the plants and thorny stems - the claws on the legs of the stool are fine. Still, the cat seems to be a bit melancholy, perhaps because of the poison  green colour. In this linocut the picture is surely pulled from two different linocut - the cat and the background in different colours.

This card is originally a linocut: English Richard Bawden´s (b. 1939) "Fizz". The cat stands stolidly on a couch. The picture is perhaps coloured when the card has been printed. The handling of different patterns, lines and squares is unbelievable.

Tämä englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin (s.1939) kortti linoleikkauksesta "keramiikkakannut" on mestarillinen. Kissa katselee oman ikkunansa suojasta pihalla olevaa toista kissaa. Kaikki yksityiskohdat ovat hienoja: kukat, kasvien lehdet, pöytäliinan kuvio, kannut, ulkona olevat puu, rakennus ja pilvet. Miten tähän linoleikkaukseen on saatu mukaan noin monta väriä? Voivatko kaikki värit olla tosiaan erillisiä linoleikkauksia vai olisiko kuvaa väritetty käsin? Richard Bawden on toisen ihailemani englantilaisen linoleikkausmestarin Edward Bawdenin (1903-1989) poika, ja myös heidän tyylinsä ovat sukua keskenään.

This card by English Richard Bawden (b 1939) from his linocut "Saltglaze Jugs" is masterful. The cat is watching another cat from the shelter of it´s own window. All the details are excellent: the flowers, leaves, the pattern of the table cloth, jugs, the tree outside, the building and the clouds. How can there be so many colours in the linocut? Can all the colours really be separate linocuts or might the picture be hand coloured after pulling. Richard Bawden is the son of another artist that I admire, Edward Bawden (1903-1989), and their styles are also related.
