LONDON CALLING EPE

 

"London Calling Epe" -pastelli/linopiirros on jo omalla paikallaan uudessa kodissaan. Ja paikkahan on aivan mahtava! Taulun Arsenal-jalkapallojoukkueen punainen taivas ja pohjoisen horisontissa näkyvä Emirates Stadium ovat päässeet Arsenalin vanhan areenan, eli Highbury Stadionin, tuolin ylle. Tuoli on myös punaista nahkaa. Se on aito vuonna 2008 puretun Highburyn Directors Boxin istuin. Tuolissa on alkuperäinen nimikyltti , joka mainitsee sen haltijaksi :seuran silloisen pääomistajan Lady Nina Bracewell-Smithin.Taulu ja tuoli tervehtivät asuntoon saapuvaa vaatenaulakon vieressä. Hallissa seinällä on myös punaisissa kehyksissään poptaide-kuva Johnny Rottenista, omistajan ensimmäinen taidehankinta. Mikäpäs on olla tässä seurassa!

The "London Calling Epe" pastel/linocut is already in its place in its new home. And the place is absolutely amazing! The red sky of the Arsenal football team in the painting and the Emirates Stadium visible on the northern horizon are above the chair from Arsenal's old arena, Highbury Stadium. The chair is also made of red leather. It is an authentic seat from the Directors Box at Highbury, which was demolished in 2008. The chair has an original nameplate, which mentions its owner: the club's then main owner, Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith. The painting and chair greet those entering the apartment next to a coat rack. There is also a pop art picture of Johnny Rotten on the wall in the hall in its red frames, the owner's first art acquisition. What is it like to be in this club!

LONTOO KUTSUU / LONDON CALLING

Sekatekniikkatyö "Lontoo kutsuu" (The Clashin kappaleen mukaan) on valmis. Saan sen nyt omalle seinälle lievittämään Lontoo-ikävää. Linopiirros Lontoon katoista on muistuma Trafalgar Squaren vieressä olevan hotellin ikkunasta. Lintuparvi on yleinen näky ja kokemus Lontoossa iltaisin kun kuu jo paistaa keltaisena. Tähän kuvaan tulikin aika dramaattinen pastellitaivas, rajua sadekuuroa ja ukkosrta, salamakin. Työn koko on 50 x 30 cm.

The mixed media work "London is calling" (based on The Clash's song) is ready. I'm getting it on my own wall now to ease my London homesickness. The linocut of London's rooftops is a memory from the window of a hotel next to Trafalgar Square. A flock of birds is a common sight and experience in London in the evenings when the moon is already shining yellow. This picture turned out to have a rather dramatic pastel sky, a violent downpour and thunder, even lightning. The size of the work is 50 x 30 cm.

LONTOO KUTSUU -linolinnut / LONDON CALLING - linocut birds

Asettelen pastellitaivaalle pieniä linopiirroksia linnuista, oikeastaan kuin leimasimia. Ne on  syytä laittaa ylösalaisin eli siten kuin ne painetaan vedostettaessa, muuten linnut lenätävät ihan väärään suuntaan. Nämä linnut lentävät sinne tänne kirkuen, ohi ja yli kuun. Taivaanrannassa edelleen sataa ja ukkostaa.

I place small linocuts of birds on the pastel sky, actually like stamps. They should be put upside down, i.e. the way they are pressed when they are printed, otherwise the birds will fly in the wrong direction. These birds fly here and there screeching, past and over the moon. It is still raining and thundering in the horizon.

Nyt Lontoon taivaalle tulikin aika tumma ukkospilvi. Mutta sen alta pilkistää vaaleampi taivaanranta. Tämä salamointi ja rankkasade menee nopeasti ohi. Ennustan, että pehmeillä pastelliliiduilla piirretylle taivaalle lentää seuraavaksi linopiirroslintuja.

Now a rather dark thundercloud appeared in the London sky. But a lighter horizon peeks out from under it. This lightning and heavy rain will pass quickly. I predict that linocut birds will fly next to the sky drawn with soft pastel crayons.

LONTOO KUTSUU - aloitusta / LONDON CALLING - Starting

 Tein aiemmin yhden Lontoo kutsuu-teemaisen linopastellin, ja se työ sitten siirtyikin sitten uuteen kotiin. Aihe edelleen kutkutti mielessä ja halusin tehdä uuden version. Aloitinkin taas suunnittelemaan pastellitaivasta linopiirrokseen Lontoon katoista. Tietenkin taivaalle tuli oranssi iso linopiirroskuu. Seuraavaksi pastellitaivasta.

I previously made one linocut & pastel work with the theme of London calling, and then this work moved to a new home. The subject still tickled my mind and I wanted to make a new version. I started planning again a pastel sky to a linocut of London rooftops. Of course, an orange big linocut moon appeared in the sky. Next, the pastel sky.

LONDON CALLING

 

MIkä iloinen tilanne olikaan antaa Minnalle ja Velille heidän syntymäpäivillään lahjaksi linopiiros/pastellini London´s Calling (Clashin  kappaleen mukaan nimetty)! Nyt meni oikeaan osoitteeseen Arsenalin innokkaille kannattajille ja kausikorttienkin omistajille. Oli ihan hurja sattuma kuulla, että perhe oli soittanut aamulla radion toivekonserttiin onnentoivotukset Velille ja toivomuksena musiikiksi oli Clashin London Calling. Lontoon katot linopiirroksena on näkymä yhden Lontoon matkan hotellista National Portrait Galleryn takana. Lintuparvi pastellitaivaalla on muistuma yli lentävästä kovaan ääneen sirkuttelevasta parvesta illalla.

What a fun situation was it to give my linocut & pastel London´s Calling (after Clash´s piece London Calling) to Minna and Veli as their birthday present. Surely now the address was spot on to keen supporters and season  ticket holders of Arsenal. And it was quite a wild coincidence to hear that the family did call in the morning to a telephone wish concert wishing happy birthday to Veli with Clash´s piece London Calling. IN the linocut the London roofs are a view from one trip to London from a hotel behind the National Portrait Gallery. The flock of birds on the pastel sky a memory of of birds flying over chirping loudly in one evening.

BP PORTRAIT AWARD - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tänäkin kesänä National Portrai Galleryssä Lontoossa oli BP Portrait Award-näyttely, jossa palkitaan parhaita muotokuvia. Edelleen valtaosa muotokuvista oli fotorealistisia kuvia, joissa enemmän tai vähemmän näkyi pohjalla olevan valokuvan piirteitä. Muutama muotokuva erottui joukosta niin, että maalaukseen oli tavoitettu mallin sisäisempiäkin tuntoja, ei vain jokainen hius, finni tai ihokarva.
BP (British Petroleum) sponsorina on saanut paljon vastustusta, saa nähdä miten käy ensi vuoden näyttelyn, joka olisi jo 31. kerta tätä kisaa.

Also this summer there was BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The best portraits are getting prizes. Still almost all portraits are Photorealistic pictures, and the photographic features which the paintings were based on were more or less visible. A few of the portraits stood out so that the painting had some of the inner feelings of the model were reached, not just every hair or pimple. BP (British Petroleum) as the sponsor has had a lot of criticism, we´ll see next year if there will be the 31st portrait award exhibition.

CINDY SHERMAN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Kolmas päivä Lontoossa ja National Portrait Galleryn Cindy Shermanin (s. 1954) valokuvanäyttely ohjelmassa.  En oikein tiedä, miksi odotin näyttelyn olevan iloisempi tai leikittelevämpi. Tiesin, että Shermanin omakuvissaan pukee ja maskeeraa itsensä tunnistamattomaksi tai ainakin johonkin rooliin. Odotinko jotain hauskaa roolipeliä. Shermanin omakuvat olivat jotain vakavampaa ja osaksi synkempää. Alkukauden mustavalkoiset kuvat olivat kauniita, Sherman oli vain osa isompaa maisemaa tai kokonaisuutta, osassa hiukan ujon tai ulkopuolisen tuntuisena. Mutta myöhemmissä valtavan kokoisissa värillisissä omakuvissa maskit olivat niin paksut, ettei omia kasvonpiirteitä enää erottanut ja puvustus oli kuin jostain näytelmästä. Melkein pelottava oli sarja kuvia, joissa kasvoja ja koko vartaloakin saattoi peittää muovinen naamio. Shermanille tuntui olevan tyypillistä jonkinlaiset projektit, joiden pohjana olivat mm. muotikuvat, historialliset maalaukset tai aristokraatit. Nämä roolit eivät ole komedioista vaan tragedioista.

Third day in London and the goal is Cindy Sherman's (b. 1954) photography exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery. I don´t really know why I was expecting the exhibition to be more cheerful or playful. I knew that Sherman is changing herself unidentified or at least someone else in her self-portraits by dressing and wearing make-up. Did I expect some kind of fun role play. Sherman´s self-portraits are something far more serious and partly even grim. The black and white photos of her earlier period were beautiful, Sherman was just a part of a bigger landscape or interior, sometimes looking a bit shy or an outsider. But later in the really huge colour pictures the masks were so thick you couldn´t see her own face any more, and the costumes were like from a theatre play. A series of photos where plastic masks covered faces and the whole body were almost scary. It seemed to be typical to Sherman creating some kind of photo series based for example fashion models, historic paintings or aristocrats. These roles are not from comedies but from tragedies.

BANKSIDE GALLERY - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Bankside-galleria Tate Modernin vieressä on aina mukana taidekierroksella Lontoossa. Kesällä siellä yleensä on runsas Royal Watercolour Societyn ja Royal Society of Painter-Printmakersin näyttely. Tietenkin katseeni hakee tästä joukosta linopiirroksia, ja ne ovat aina yhtä hienoja, yllättäviä ja inspiroivia. 
Tässä otos kaikkein parhaista:  kaksi Richard Bawdenia, Wuon-Gean Ho, Dale Devereux Barker, Laura Boswell, John Pryce, Fernando Feijoo ja lisäksi Chris Salmonin etsaus + Richard Bawdenin vesiväri.

Bankside Gallery by Tate Modern is a must place in my art round in London. In summer there is usually an exhibition by Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Of cource my gaze turns to linocuts in this group, and they are always equally fine, surprising and inspiring. Here are some of the best: two Richard Bawdens, Wuon-Gean Ho, Dale Devereux Barker, Laura Boswell, John Pryce, Fernando Feijoo and in addition Chris Salmon´s etching + Richard Bawden´s watercolour. 

TAKIS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tate Modernin toinen uusi tuttavuus oli Takis, alkujaan Panayiotis Vassilakis (s. 1925), Kreikassa syntynyt ja myöhemmin Pariisissa vaikuttanut kuvanveistäjä. Takisin teoksissa keskeisissä rooleissa ovat magnetismi, liike ja valot. Näitä pieniä ja suuria töitä voisi katsoa päiväkausia, tosi hypnoottista ja meditatiivista. Veistosten rakennetta ei ole mitenkään peitelty, metalliosat näyttävät usein hauskoilta tai romuilta. Jotain samaa on pienissä metalliosissa, jotka hapuilevat värähdellen kohti toisiaan ja valtavissa metallipalloissa ja kumahtelevassa kongissa. Minut Takis hurmasi satanolla!

Kolmatta Tate Modernin näyttelyä Olafur Eliassonin installaatioista odotin innolla. Muistissa oli hänen ihana aurinko museon aulassa/ turbiinihallissa jokunen vuosi sitten. Mutta näyttely olikin täynnä kirkuvia ja juoksevia lapsia, ulos tullessa lapsijoukko tappeli paikasta askartelupöydän ympärille. Hiukanko hävettää, että pakenin.

The other new acquaintance at Tate Modern was Takis, originally Panayiotis Vassilakis (b. 1925), a sculptor born in Greece and later living in Paris. The main roles in Takis´s sculptures have electromagnetism, movements and light. You could watch these small and huge works for days, really hypnotic and meditative. The construction of the sculptures has not been hidden in any way, the metallic parts often look fun or like scrap metal. There is something similar in the very small metal parts that are groping towards each other and huge metal balls and a bellowing gong. I was charmed by Takis completely!

I was eagerly waiting for the third exhibition in Tate Modern, Olafur Eliasson´s installations. In my memory there was his glorious sun at the entrance hall / Turbine Hall of the museum a few years back. But the exhibition was full of screaming and running children, a group of them were fighting for a place at a crafting table by the exit. I´m a bit ashamed that I fled.

NATALIA GONCHAROVA - NÄYTTELY /EXHIBITION

Lontoon taidekierros jatkui Tate Moderniin, ja täälläkin oli edessä tutustuminen kahteen uuteen nimeen. Venäläisen Natalia Goncharovan (1881-1962) nimi on saattanut tulla eteen joissakin jutuissa vuosisadan alun venäläisen baletin lavastuksista ja puvuista Pariisissa. Mutta Goncharovan maalauksia en ole ennen nähnyt. Niissä näkyi vaikutteita ja kuvioita venäläisestä kansantaiteesta ja tekstiileistä. Värit olivat muhkeita, aika tummia ja maanläheisiä. Onkohan syy siihen, että Goncharova ei ole tunnetumpi se, että hän on nainen. Parempi myöhään kuin ei milloinkaan! Tämä näyttely antaa voimaa ainakin naiskatsojille!

My art round in London continued to Tate Modern, and even here I was met by two new names. The name of Russian Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) has perhaps popped up in some articles or books about the Russian ballet´s sets and costumes in Paris at the beginning of 1900´s. But I have never seen Goncharova´s paintings before. You could detect influence and patterns of Russian folk art and textiles in them. The colours were hefty, quite dark and earthy. Perhaps the reason for the fact that Goncharova is not better known is that she is a woman. Better late than never! This exhibition is a powering experience, at least for female art enthusiasts.
