Joulunpunainen taivas, oranssi kuu ja lintuparvi Pispalan yllä on nyt valmis. Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm. Nimeksi kuvalle tuli Juice Leskisen Kappaleesta Tampere By Night säe: "Katson joka yö tähänkin kuvastimeen, ja on peilissä vika jos kasvoni vetäytyy punaan". Kuvan alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta, kuukin on linopiirros samoin kuin noin 30 linopiirrosta linnuista. Naapurin punaisena hehkuvan pensaan innoittama taivas on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla.

A Christmas-red sky, an orange moon, and a flock of birds above Pispala—the piece is now complete. It measures 50 x 60 cm. The title is taken from a line in the song "Tampere By Night" by Juice Leskinen: "Every night I gaze into this looking-glass, too; and if my face turns red, the fault lies with the mirror." The lower part of the work features a linocut of the Pispala ridge; the moon is also a linocut, as are the approximately 30 linocuts of birds. The sky, inspired by a neighbor’s bush that glows a deep red, was created using soft pastels.

Puna / keltaiselle pastellitaivaalle vedostin nyt pieniä linopiirroslintuja /stamppeja / leimasimia. Pienimmät stampit olen liimannut viinipullon korkkeihin, jotta ne on helpompi painaa paperia vasten. Olisikohan lintuja taivaalla noin 30. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta ja kuukin on linopiirros.

Against a red and yellow pastel sky, I’ve now printed small linocut birds—stamps, essentially. I’ve glued the smallest ones onto wine corks to make them easier to press against the paper. There are probably around 30 birds in the sky. At the bottom, there’s a linocut of Pispala, and the moon is a linocut as well.

 No nyt alkaa pastellitaivas Pispalan yllä olla mielikuvani mukainen punainen, keltainen ja voimakas. Taivaalle lentää jatkossa varmaan parvi pieniä linopiirroslintuja. Ehkä tämän taivaan innoite on ollut naapurin syysasussa ollut kirsikkapuu, jonka näen työhuoneeni ikkunasta.

Now the pastel sky over Pispala is taking on the vivid red and yellow hues I had in my mind. A flock of small linocut birds will likely soon be flying across the sky. Perhaps the inspiration for this sky was the neighbor’s cherry tree in its autumn colors, which I can see from my studio window.

Taivaalle Pispalan harjun ja kuun linopiirrosten taakse alkaa nyt tulla pastellitaivasta. Hahmottelin jo keltaista ja punaista pastellia. Tässä vaiheessa työ näyttää melkein mahdottomalta kun mielikuvituksessa värit ovat aika voimakkaita ja tämä näyttää pliisulta.

A pastel sky is now beginning to emerge behind the linocut outlines of the Pispala ridge and the moon. I’ve already sketched in some yellow and red pastel. At this stage, the work feels almost impossible; the colors in my imagination are quite intense, yet this looks rather bland.

KALENTERI 2027 / CALENDAR 2027

Kalenteri vuodelle 2027 linopiirroksistani ja pastelleista on taas painettu perinteiseen malliin. Kuvat ovat linopiirrroksiani ja pastellia. Timo on valinnut kuvien seuraksi suomalaisia sananlaskuja. Hyvä painojälki on A-Printin / Printtaamon. Kuvissa on paljon Pispalaa, lintuja, kaloja, vettä ja taivasta. Tammikuussa näkyvät Lontoon katot. Kalenterin koko on 42 x 21 cm.

Kalenteria voi tilata Etsy.kauppani (linokissa) kautta Suomeen hintaan 24 euroa. Sen verran on iso koko, että postissa kulkee S-pakettina.

The calendar for 2026 of my linocuts and pastels has been printed in the traditional style again. The pictures are my linocuts and pastels. Timo has chosen Finnish proverbs to accompany the pictures. A-Print/ Printtaamo has made a good print.

The images feature plenty of Pispala, birds, fish, water, and sky. The month of January shows the rooftops of London. The calendar measures 42 x 21 cm.

You can order the calendar, but only to Finland via my Etsy shop (linokissa) for 24 euros. Due to its large size, it is shipped as an S-sized parcel (not as a letter).

LYHTYKALA KOTONAAN / LANTERN FISH AT HOME

 

Että on ihanaa saada kuva myydystä taulustaan uudessa kodissaan. Aika harvoin tällaisen kuvan saa, joten se on aina tapaus! "Hukuin, nukuin, heräsin - mä täältä löysin taivaan", aika iso linopiirros/pastelli haettiin Iittalan kesänäyttelystä Helsinkiin rintamamiestaloon. Luvalla paljastetaan uudet onnelliset omistajatkin: Matti Remes ja Susanna Tan. Taulun paikkahan on hieno, keinutuolin vieressä. Voin ihan kuvitella pimeän syysillan kun pyöreässä lampussa on valo samaan tapaan kuin lyhtykalalla. Keinutuolissa istuessaan voi melkein tuntea keinuvansa veden alla. Eksotiikkaa löytyy lattialtakin, Matin tädin perintönä kamelin mallinen jalkapalli Teheranista, lypsyjakkara Ouagadougousta ja aasin loimi Afganistanista. Samaan joukkoon sopivat vallan hyvin Tahmelan rannan eksoottiset kalat.

How wonderful it is to get a picture of your sold painting in its new home. It's quite rare to get a picture like this, so it's always an event! "I Drowned, I Slept, I W Up - I Found Heaven Here", a rather large linocut/pastel traveled from the Iittala summer exhibition to Helsinki and a wooden house. With permission, the new happy owners are also revealed: Matti Remes and Susanna Tan. The painting has a great location, next to the rocking chair. I can just imagine a dark autumn evening when the round lamp has light in the same way as the lantern fish. When sitting in the rocking chair, you can almost feel yourself rocking under water. Exoticism can also be found on the floor, Matti's aunt's inheritance is a camel-shaped football from Tehran, a milking stool from Ouagadougou and a donkey rug from Afghanistan. The exotic fish on the Tahmela beach fit in very well with the same group.

KULTAINEN KUIN OLKI / GOLDEN LIKE A STRAW

 

Huvikseni tein toisellekin linopiirrokselle autoilevasta kissasta pastellitausta. Nyt taivas on paljon pelkistetympi kuin aiemmassa. Vain punaista, oranssia, keltaista ja sinistä sekä muutama tähti ylhäällä. Eihän ole mitään merkitystä tai järkeä arvioida näitä, mutta kuitenkin sitä tuumaa: "Kumpi on parempi?"

Tämä versio sai nimekseen P. Mustapään runosta säkeen: "Maisema on keltainen, kultainen, keltainen kuin olki". Kuvan koko on 15 x 20 cm.

For fun, I made another linocut of a cat driving a car with a pastel background. Now the sky is much more simple than in the previous one. Just red, orange, yellow and blue and a few stars at the top. There is no meaning or sense in judging these, but still, it says: "Which one is better?"

This version got its name from a verse from a poem by P. Mustapää: "The Landscape Is Yellow, Golden, Yellow like straw". The size of the picture is 15 x 20 cm.

LIEKEHTIVÄT SYDÄMET / FLAMING HEARTS

 

Autolla mäkeä alas huristelevan linopiirroskissan taakse tein tumman sinisen ja punaisen pastellitaivaan. Kesäpäivän huveja on tehdä näille pienille linopiirroksille pastellitaivas. Tämän kuvan nimeksi tuli "Jäivät sydämet liekehtivät rannoille Arkadian" (P. Mustapään runosta) ja koko on 15 x 20 cm.

I made a dark blue and red pastel sky behind the linocut cat whizzing down the hill in a car. One of the fun things about a summer day is making pastel skies for these little linocuts. This picture was called "Flaming Hearts Were Left On the shores of Arcadia " (from the poem by P. Mustapää) and the size is 15 x 20 cm.

YLÄPUOLELLA AVARUUS / VASTNESS ABOVE

Pastellitausta ilmestyi tähän linopiirrosten taakse violettina: alareunassa punaisempaa ja ylhäällä sinisempänä. Muutama tähtikin syttyi ylös. Iso hopeanharmaa naurava kuu on linopiirros, ja samoin jänikset. Alareunassa pilkottaa pala syksyisiä peltoja. Tämän sekatekniikan koko on 34 x 24,5 cm ja nimensä se sai Väinö Kirstinän runosta: "Alla syvä maa, yläpuolella avaruus".

The pastel background appeared behind the linocuts in purple: redder at the bottom and bluer at the top. A few stars also lit up. The big silver-gray laughing moon is a linocut, and so are the hares. A piece of autumnal fields is visible at the bottom. The size of this mixed media is 34 x 24.5 cm and it got its name from Väinö Kirstinä's poem: "Deep Earth Below, Vastness Above".

HERKULES

Tällä linopiirroskissalla on voimaa. Se nostaa harteilleen koko maapallon ja vielä toisen kissan. Kissat ja maapallo ovat linopiirroksia, joista maapallo on vedostettu sinisenä ja väritetty mantereet käsin vihreiksi. Tausta on pastellia. Kuvan koko on 22 x 11 cm.

This linocut cat has strength. It lifts the entire Earth and another cat on its shoulders. Cats and the Earth are linocuts, where the Earth has been printed blue and the continents have been hand-colored in green. The background is pastel. The size of the image is 22 x 11 cm.

ÄKSY ÄRRIPURRI

Linopiirros vihaisesta kissasta, kuusta ja salamapilvestä sai nyt taustakseen pehmeää pastellia:  keltaisia viljapeltoja, tummenevan taivaan ja salaman. Kuvan koko on 23 x 17 cm. Ja nimi tälle kuvalle on: "Äksy ärripurri äänensä korottaja".

The linocut of an angry cat, the moon and a lightning cloud now has a soft pastel background: yellow cornfields, a darkening sky and lightning. The size of the picture is 23 x 17 cm. And the name of this picture is: "Äksy ärripurri äänensä korottaja" (impossible to translate)

TILAA TAIVAHALLA / SPACE IN THE SKY

Tein pehmeillä pastelleilla taustan tähän kuvaan, jossa on yhdessä useita linopiirroksia : kuumailmapallo ja kolme lentävää jänistä. Väritin kuumailmapallon käsin. Taustasta tuli aika kesäinen ja kevyt, hiukan violettia ja keltaista pilvenhattaroissa. Kuvan koko 0n 31 x 24 cm. Nimensä tämä sekatekniikkatyö sai Aaro Hellaakosken runosta: " On tilaa taivahalla, on ääntä yllä, alla".

I used soft pastels to create the background for this picture, which combines several linocuts: a hot air balloon and three flying rabbits. I hand-colored the hot air balloon. The background turned out to be quite summery and light, with a bit of purple and yellow in the cotton candy clouds. The size of the picture is 31 x 24 cm. This mixed media work got its name from Aaro Hellaakoski's poem: "There Is Space In the Sky, There Is Sound Above, Below".

MISULIINI

 

Sadepäivä mökillä, mikä sopiva hetki tehdä pastellitausta linopiirrokseen vihaisesta kissasta ja kuusta. Taustalle tuli iltataivas, hiukan violettia ja sinistä ja paljon tähtiä. Kuva sai nimekseen vanhasta värssystä: " Kissan nimi on Misuliini, minäpä otan kissan kiinni", Kuvan koko on 23 x 16,5 cm.

A rainy day at the summer cottage, what a perfect time to make a pastel background for a linocut of an angry cat and the moon. The background was the evening sky, a bit of purple and blue and lots of stars. The picture got its name from an old verse: "The cat's name is Misuliini, I'll catch the cat", The size of the picture is 23 x 16.5 cm.

KISSA AUTOILEE / CAT DRIVING A CAR

 

Sarjassani pieniä linopiirroksia pastellimaisemassa on tässä autoileva kissa. Kuvan alle oli jo aiemmin lisätty myös pieni kissalogoni. Kissalla on tilaa kääntää rattia, sillä maisema näyttää hiekkaerämaalta. Kuvan koko on vain 17 x 20 cm ja nimen se sai Kirsi Kunnaksen runosta: "Silkkiturkki, ruususuu, pieni kissa Krumeluu".

In my series of small linocuts in a pastel landscape, here is a cat driving a car. A small cat logo had already been added below the image. The cat has room to turn the steering wheel, as the landscape looks like a sandy desert. The image is only 17 x 20 cm in size and its name comes from Kirsi Kunnas' poem: "Silky fur, rose mouth, little cat Krumeluu".

HUUSSIN TAIKA / MAGIC OF THE OUTHOUSE

 Alkujaan tein pienen linopiirroksen huussista Maritta Hirvosen novellikokoelman "Pikkukamarimusiikkia" kanteen. Nyt lisäsin pastelliväreillä sateenkaaren huussiin taakse taivaalle. Huomasin sitten, että voihan sateenkaari symbolina liittyä alkukesän Pride-marsseihin ja -viikkoihinkin. Kannatan! Kuvan koko on 16 x 14 cm ja nimi tuli vanhasta sanonnasta: "Istu ala, rentoudu ja nauti, kesäinen on huussin taika!".

Originally I made a small linocut of an outhouse (huussi in Finnish) for the cover of Maritta Hirvonen's short story collection "Music From the Outhouse" /"Pikkukamarimusiikkia". Now I added a rainbow to the sky behind the outhouse in pastel colors. Then I realized that the rainbow as a symbol can also be associated with the Pride marches and weeks of early summer. I support it! The size of the picture is 16 x 14 cm and the name came from an old saying: "Sit down, relax and enjoy, summer is the magic of outhouse!"

YSTÄVÄN LUONA / AT YOUR FRIEN'S PLACE

 Kolmas pieni linopiirros ja pastellitausta on toinen lino kissoista korissa. Nämä kissat katselevat kesäistä taivasta. Muutama valkoinen pilvenhattara seilaa sinisellä taivaalla, ja näkyy siellä pari lintuakin. Kissojen kori on ikkunan edessä keittiön pöydällä punavalkoraitaisen pöytäliinan päällä. Kuvan koko on 23 x 16,5 c, ja nimeksi tuli Aale Tynnin runosta: "Yksin et ole niin yksin, kuin olet, ystävä, ystävän luona".

The third small linocut and pastel background is another lino of cats in a basket. These cats are looking at the summer sky. A few white cotton candy clouds are sailing in the blue sky, and a couple of birds can be seen there. The basket of cats is in front of the window on the kitchen table on a red and white striped tablecloth. The size of the picture is 23 x 16.5 cm, and the name came from Aale Tynni’s poem: "Alone you are not as alone as you are, friend, at your friend's place".

KORKEALTA PUTOAN / I FALL FROM A HIGHT PALCE

 

Toinen pieni pastellitausta linopiirroksille on tehty. Kolme linopiirrosta jäniksistä hyppii taivaalle ympäri oranssin linopiirroskuun. Tein alaosaan vihreäkeltaisia peltoja, joiden yllä näkyy punertava auringonlasku. Meno on villiä Suomen yöttömässä yössä. Kuvan koko on 24 x 17 cm ja nimeksi tuli Aaro Hellaakosken runosta: "Kun uuvun kerran, putoan, ma korkealta putoan".

Another small pastel background for linocuts has been made. Three linocuts of hares are jumping into the sky around an orange linocut moon. I made green-yellow fields in the lower part, above which a reddish sunset can be seen. Things are going wild in the nightless night of Finland. The size of the picture is 24 x 17 cm and the name came from Aaro Hellaakoski's poem: "When I get tired once, I fall, I fall from a high place".

YHDESSÄ NE LEIKKIVÄT / THEY PLAY TOGETHER

 Muiden hommien lomassa teen usein pastellitaustoja pieniin linopiirroksiin. Aina ihmetyttää, miten paljon pienellä värillä, usein taivailla, pilvillä tai vihreillä pelloilla voi muuttaa kuvan tunnelmaa. Tässä linopiirroksessa kaksi kissaa katsoo pärekorin reunan yli. Nyt kun taivas on tumma ja salamat leiskuvat, kissat näyttävät hiukan pelokkailta. Tämä 24 x 17 cm kokoinen kuva sai nimensä runosta "Yhdessä ne leikkivät, lymyävät sylikkäin, ne aina kehräävät".

In between other jobs, I often make pastel backgrounds for small linocuts. It's always amazing how much a little color, often in the sky, clouds or green fields, can change the mood of a picture. In this linocut, two cats look over the edge of a wicker basket. Now that the sky is dark and lightnings are flashing, the cats look a bit scared. This 24 x 17 cm picture was named after the poem "They play together, they hide in their arms, they always purr".

LAULU KESÄLLE / SONG FOR THE SUMMER

 

Valmis! Tätä munasta kuoriutuvaa kissaa oli kiva tehdä vaihe vaiheelta: alaosan linopiirroksen vedostus kissoineen ja munineen, oranssin linopiirroskuun vedostus mäen taakse, taivaan värittäminen pehmeillä pastelleilla, pienten linopiirrosten vedostus taivaalle (lentäviä jäniksiä ja lintuja) taivaan yläosaan vielä pieniä tähtiä pastelleilla ja tussilla ja viimeisenä vielä hiukan väriä tusseilla munankuoreen. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm ja nimensä se sai Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta: "Laulu kesälle, vahvojen siipien kesälle". Kesäksi tämä työ aikoo matkustaa Pieksämäelle Poleenin naivistinäyttelyyn.

Done! This cat hatching from an egg was fun to make step by step: printing the lower part of the linocut with the cat and egg, printing the orange linocut moon behind the hill, coloring the sky with soft pastels, printing small linocuts in the sky (flying rabbits and birds), adding small stars in the upper part of the sky with pastels and markers, and finally adding a little color with markers to the eggshell. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm and it got its name from Eila Kivikk'aho's poem: "Song for the summer, for the summer of strong wings". This work will travel to Pieksämäki for the Poleeni naive art exhibition for the summer.

TAIDEKESKUS VÄINÖLÄ, VARKAUS

 

Linopiirrokset ja kortit lähtivät kohti Taidekeskus Väinölän kesän naivistista näyttelyä. Marja-Muusa Hämäläinen ja Timo Hämäläinen hakivat tavarat treffeillä Lempäälässä Mantunkulman Nesteellä. Timo Kanerva nappasi iloisen vappukuvan.

Naivistinen yhteisnäyttely "ILOA - RAKKAUTTA - NAIVISTIT VARKAUDESSA" on avoinna 25.5.-23.8.2026.

Linocuts and cards headed to the summer naive art exhibition at the Väinölä Art Center. Marja-Muusa Hämäläinen and Timo Hämäläinen picked up the items on a date at Mantunkulma Neste in Lempäälä. Timo Kanerva snapped a happy May Day photo. The naive art joint exhibition "JOY - LOVE - NAIVE ARTISTS IN VÄINÖLÄ" is open from 25.5.-23.8.2026.
