KÄY TUULI LÄPI PÄÄNI / THE WIND IS BLOWING THROUGH MY HEAD

Tämä sekatekniikkatyö sai nimekseen "Käy tuuli läpi pääni etelästä pohjoiseen" Juice Leskisen kappaleesta Viidestoista yö. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta ja ylhäällä linopiirroksia linnuista. Taivas ja revontulet on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Valkoisia revontulia en ole koskaan nähnyt. Ne ovat harvinaisia ja mielikuvituksessani tällaisia. Kuvan koko on 70 x 40 cm.

This mixed media work was named "Wind Through My Head From South To North" after Juice Leskinen's song Fifteenth Night. At the bottom is a linocut of Pispala and at the top are linocuts of birds. The sky and the northern lights are made with soft pastels. I have never seen white northern lights. They are rare and in my imagination they are like this. The size of the picture is 70 x 40 cm.

 

VALKOISET REVONTULET / WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS

 

Oli kyllä vaikea pastelliväreillä tehdä nämä valkoiset revontulet, mutta nyt luulen. että työ on valmis. Näkemieni kuvien perusteella harvinaiset valkoiset revontulet ovat jotenkin  teräväreunaisempia kuin ne tavalliset. Revontulet ovat kuin kapeita puikkoja. Lopputulokseen pääsin usean pyyhkimisen ja aloituksen kautta niin, että taustan sinisen tein  ensin valmiiksi ja sen päälle valkoiset osat. Lisäsin vielä taivaalle pari pientä linopiirroslintua ja pieniä valkoisia tähtiä taivaalle.

It was difficult to make these white northern lights with pastel colors, but now I think. that the work is finished. Based on the pictures I have seen, the rare white northern lights are somehow sharper-edged than the usual ones. The northern lights are like narrow sticks. I reached the final result through several erasing and starting over so that I finished the blue background first and then the white parts on top of it. I also added a couple of small linocut birds and small white stars in the sky.

NE TUMMUVAT, NE SAMMUVAT / THEY DARKEN, THEY TURN OFF

 Iso työ revontulista Pispalan ja Pyynikin yllä taitaa olla nyt valmis. Se sai nimen Ilmari Kiannon runosta: "Ne tummuvat, ne sammuvat, ne repeävät kuin jää". Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan taloineen ja Pyynikin näkötorneineen. Taivas ja revontulet ovat pehmeää pastellia. Kaksi tikkaa yläkulmissa ovat linopiirroksia, ja päät pon väritetty punaisiksi käsin. Perspektiiviistäö tässä kuvassa ei taida olla mitään jälkeä. Alaosan oikeassa reunassa lentää kotka, mutta tikat ovat ylhäällä suhteessa paljon suurempia. Ja revontuletkaan eivät yleensä ole noin korkeita. Mutta minäkö siitä välittäisin - no en! Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm.

The big work on the northern lights above Pispala and Pyynikki seems to be finished now. It got its name from Ilmari Kianto's poem: "They darken, they turn off, they crack like ice". In the lower part, there is a linocut with Pispala's houses and Pyynikki's ob servation tower. The sky and northern lights are soft pastel. The two woodpeckers in the upper corners are linocuts, and their heads are colored red by hand. There doesn't seem to be any trace of perspective in this picture. An eagle is flying on the right edge of the lower part, but the woodpeckers are proportionally much larger at the top. And the northern lights are usually not that high either. But I wouldn't care - well, I don't! The size of the picture is 50 x 60 cm.

TIKAT TAIVAALLE / WOODPECKERS INTO THE SKY

 

Kaksi isoa tikkaa lensi taivaalle pastellirevontulien joukkoon. Tikat ovat linopiirroksia, ja niiden päät pitää vielä maalata punaiseksi.

Two large woodpeckers flew into the sky among the pastel aurora lights. The woodpeckers are linocuts, and their heads still need to be painted red.

REVONTULET JA LINNUT / NORTHERN LIGHTS AND BIRDS

 

No nyt alkavat revontulet näyttää edes hiukan revontulilta. Kaksi isoa lintuakin lentää taivaalle. Lisäsin vielä tähtiä eili pieniä pisteitä kovemmalla pastelliliidulla taivaalle. Alaosa on linopiirros, ja samoin linnut tulevat olemaan linopiirroksia.

Well, the northern lights are starting now look at least a little like the northern lights. Two big birds also fly into the sky. I also added stars or small dots with a harder pastel chalk to the sky. The bottom part is a linocut, and so will the birds be linocuts.

REVONTULET TAIVAALLE/ NORTHERN LIGHTS TO THE SKY

 Ajattelin tehdä yhden uuden revontulityön kun kaikki aiemmat on myyty. Alaosa on aika iso, 60 cm leveä yhdistelmä Pyynikin ja Pispalan rinteistä. Levitin ensimmäiset tumman siniset pastellit ikaankuin revontulien taustaksi. Ja nyt näyttää siltä, että taivas on täynnä käärmeitä.

I was thinking of doing one new northern lights picture when all the previous ones have been sold. The lower part is quite large, 60 cm wide, a combination of the ridges of Pyynikki and Pispala. I spread the first dark blue spots of pastel as a background for the northern lights. And now it seems that the sky is full of snakes.

JO MATKAAN MUUTTOHAUKKA KÄY / PEREGRINE FALCON IS ALREADY ON ITS WAY

 

Kuvan alaosassa on Pispala ja hiukan Pyynikkiäkin linopiirroksena. Punainen haulitorni ja näkötornin juurella kaksi autoa on väritetty käsin. Taivaan täyttävät pehmeällä pastellilla tehdyt revontulet. Ja niitä ihan oikeasti on Tampereellakin viime talvena nähty. Iso haukka taivaalla on linopiirros. Lisäsin  tähtiä ja pohdin, ovatko revontulet enemmänkin kuin pilviä, joihin valo heijastuu. Taidan tehdä uuden työn  aiheesta. Työn nimi "Jo matkaan muuttohaukka käy" on lainattu Riki Sorsan laulusta Muuttohaukka.

At the bottom of this picture is Pispala and a bit of Pyynikki as a linocut. The red shot tower and two cars by the observation tower are hand coloured. The sky is full of Northern lights made with soft pastel. And these lights were really seen in Tampere last winter. The big hawk in the sky is a linocut. I added some stars and pondered, are the Northern lights more like just clouds reflecting light. I might make another one of the same subject. The name for the picture "Peregrine Falcon Is Already On Its Way" is from Riki Sorsa's song Peregrine Falcon.

REVONTULET MUUTTUVAT / CHANGING NORTHERN LIGHTS

 Jatkoin pastellitaivaalle revontulien tekoa. Ja sehän olikin aika konstikasta. Aina vaan tuli muutoksia,  enemmän vaaleaa, enemmän tummaa, enemmän punaista, enemmän sinistä ja mikä se revontulen vihreä sävy oikein onkaan. Jossain vaiheessa olin jo luovuttaa, mutta kyllä siitä vielä jotain tulee. Jatkuu siis....

I continued making Northern lights in the pastel sky. And it really seemed to be a hard job. There came changes and more changes, more light, more dark, more red, more blue, and what really is that green hue of the Northern lights. I was almost at the brink of giving up at some point, but it might become still something. Continuing....

REVONTULET / NORTHERN LIGHTS

 Uusi aika iso  (50 x 60 cm) sekatekniikkatyö on aluillaan. Alaosan täyttää linopiirros Pispalan harjusta haulitorneineen. Mutta nyt kävin käsiksi pastellitaivaaseen. Keskellä kesähelteitä aion tehdä taivaalle revontulia, joita näkyi kevättalvella täällä Etelä-Suomessakin.

A new quite large (50 x 60 cm) mixed media work is at the beginning. The bottom is filled with a linocut of the Pispala ridge with its shot tower. But now I start working on the pastel sky. In the middle of summer heat I plan to make some Northern lights which we saw in the spring winter even here in the Southern Finland.

 Linopiirros ja pastellityö revontulista on nyt valmis - keskellä suomalaista hellekautta. Vielä on pitkä aika siihen, että revontulia taas näkyy. Taivas ja itse revontulet ovat pehmeää pastellia. Lisäsin taivaalle myös tähtiä. Alaosan Pispala-kuva on linopiirros. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

A linocut & pastel work of northern lights is now ready - in the middle of Finnish heat season. It´s still a long time till we can see northern lights again. The sky and northern lights are soft pastel. I added also a few stars in the sky. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

Revontulet saivat vähän lisää väriä - pehmeää pastellia. Näitä oli yllättävän vaikea tehdä, mutta ihanaa oli sotkea sinistä, vihreää, keltaista ja violettia.

The northern light got some more colour - soft pastel. It was surprisingly difficult to make these, but so lovely to mess together blue, green, yellow and purple.
