NAMIA! / YAMMY!

Ystäväni vei ystävälleen syntymäpäivälahjaksi linopiirrokseni koirasta eli "Saisinko namia?". Taulu pääsi heti jo syntymäpäiväjuhlassa seinälle. Eikös se ole upeaa! Koira löysi heti oman paikkansa eikä joutunut komeron perälle.

My friend gave her friend my linocut of a dog, "Can I Have a Treat, Please?", as a birthday present. The picture went up on the wall right away at the birthday party. Isn't that wonderful! The dog immediately found its place and didn't end up in the back of a cupboard.

TAKAN REUNALLA / ON THE MANTELPIECE

 

Linopiirros koirasta uudessa kodissaan. Hieno paikka takan reunuksella olohuoneessa. Uusi koiran emäntä kuvaileekin, että koira on katseellaan mukana kun puhutaan vakavista asioista. Linopiirroksen nimi on: "Mikä ny o?".

A linocut of a dog in its new home. A great place on the mantelpiece in the living room. The dog's new owner describes that the dog is always looking at you when serious matters are being discussed. The linocut is called: "What's up?".

"NYT ON KYLLÄ AIKA HIIHTÄÄ!" /" NOW IT'S TIME TO SKI!"

 

Koiralla on kudottu huppu päässä. Selvästikin ollaan menossa ulos ja siellä on kylmää, pakkasta, ehkä lumisadekin. Mutta aikomus on käydä hiihtolenkillä isännän tai emännän kanssa. Kuvan nimikin on: "Nyt on kyllä aika hiihtää!" Väritin koiran hupun kolmella eri värillä: vihreällä, punaisella ja beigellä. Minusta vihreä on paras. Tämä pieni linopiirros koirasta, 15 x 10 cm, kuuluu sarjaan pieniä linokissoja ja -koiria.

The dog has a woven hood on his head. Obviously, we're going outside and it's cold, freezing, maybe even snowing. But the intention is to go on a ski run with the host or hostess. The name of the picture is: "Now It's Time to Ski!". I colored the dog's hood with three different colors: green, red and beige. I think green is the best. This small linocut of a dog, 15 x 10 cm, belongs to a series of small lino cats and dogs.

REKKU, JEKKUMESTARI / REKKU, THE TRICK MASTER

 

Rekku-koiralla on hiukan ilkikurinen ilme. Pää on kallellaan ja oikeastaan vain toinen silmä katsoo suoraan kohti. Mitähän sillä on mielessä. Joku jekku varmaan päätellen siitä, että koiran nimi on Rekku,jekkumestari. Mutta hieno on sillä kaulapanta, millahän jekulla sekin on hankittu, Tämä pieni linopiirros (15 x 10 cm) on yksi sarjasta kissa- ja koirapotretteja.

Rekku the dog has a slightly mischievous expression. The head is tilted and actually only one eye is looking straight ahead. What does it have in mind? Probably some trick, judging by the fact that the dog's name is Rekku, the Trick Master. But the collar is great, what the heck did you do to get it? This small linocut (15 x 10 cm) is one of a series of cat and dog portraits.

MIHIN SE KÄRPÄNEN KATOSI? / WHERE DID THAT FLY DISAPPEAR?

 

Koira ihmettelee, mihin  se kärpänen oikein katosi. Ihan vähän aikaa sitten se lenteli ympäriinsä, mutta voisiko se istua koiran pään päällä, mokomakin? Koiran hampaat ovat jo valmiina popsaisemaan sen pörrääjän. Tämä pieni linopiirros on sarjastani koirien ja kissojen muotokuvia. Koko on vain 15 x 10 cm.

The dog wonders where the fly disappeared to. Not long ago it was flying around, but could it sit on the dog's head, even? The dog's teeth are already ready to pop that fluffer. This small linocut is from my series of portraits of dogs and cats. The size is only 15 x 10 cm.

HEIKKI, HIIRIKISSA / HEIKKI THE MOUSE CATCHER

 Heikki on hiirikissa. Silmät ovat viirulla ja katse tarkkana. Korvat on painettu päätä vasten, luimistellen. Ja hiirikissan hampaat näkyvät hyvin. Mutta onkohan tämä Heikiltä vain mahtailua? Tämä linopiirros kuuluu sarjaani pieniä koiria ja kissoja, koko on vain 15 x 10 cm.

Heikki is a mouse cat. The eyes are wide and the gaze is attentive. The ears are pressed against the head.  And the mouse cat's teeth are very visible. But is this just wishful thinking on Heikki's part? This lino drawing belongs to my series of small dogs and cats, the size is only 15 x 10 cm.

"ÄLÄ MUA SYYTÄ!" / "DON'T BLAME ME!"

 Uusi pieni linopiirros koirasta on "Älä mua syytä!". Koira katsoo lata kulmiensa ehkä isäntäänsä tai emäntäänsä. Ei oikein kai uskalla katsoa suoraan silmiin. Mutta mistä koiraa syytetään? Onko lattialla lätäkkö koiran vieressä vai onko joulukuusi kaatunut? Tämä lino on osa sarjaani pieniä koira ja kissoja, vain 15 x 10 cm.

A new small linocut of a dog is called "Don't Blame Me!". The dog is looking at its master or mistress with its furrowed brows. He doesn't really dare to look directly in the eyes. But what is the dog accused of? Is there a puddle on the floor next to the dog or has the Christmas tree fallen over? This lino is part of my series of small dogs and cats, only 15 x 10 cm.

"SAISINKO NAMIA?" / CAN I HAVE A TREAT, PLEASE?"

 Tein uuden version aiemmasta linopiirrroksesta "Olisko jo ruoka-aika?". Aiempi koira näytti jotenkin liian karvaiselta kun olin kaivertanut valkoiset kohdat viivoina. Teinkin uuden suunnitelman puhelimen kuvankäsittelyllä lisäämällä yhtenäisempiä valkoisia kohtia koiran turkkiin. Nyt taidan olla tyytyväinen tähän graafisempaan versioon anelevasta koirasta. Nimeksi tuli "Saisinko namia?".

I made a new version of the previous linocut "Is it time to eat yet?". The previous dog looked somehow too hairy when I had carved the white spots as lines. I made a new plan with the phone's image processing, adding more uniform white spots to the dog's fur. Now I think I'm happy with this more graphic version of the begging dog. It is called "Can I Have a Treat, Please?".

"OLISKO JO RUOKA-AIKA?" /"IS IT TIME TO EAT YET?"

Välillä on kiva tehdä pieniä linopiirroksia kissoista, koirista tai muista eläimistä. Nyt vuorossa on koira, joka katsoo anovasti kuin kysyen: "Olisko jo ruoka-aika?" Vai onko tarjkoitus vain siirtää katse tuosta pienestä lammikosta lattialla oikealla. Tämän kuvan koko on vain 15 x 10 cm.

Sometimes it's nice to make small linocuts of cats, dogs or other animals. Now it's the dog's turn, who looks pleadingly as if asking: "Is it time to eat yet?" Or is the purpose just to shift the gaze from that small pond on the floor to the right. The size of this image is only 15 x 10 cm.

KOIRA SEINÄLLÄ / A DOG ON THE WALL

 

Onhan linopiirrokseni koirasta päässyt ihanalle paikalle uuden kotinsa seinällä! Mustavalkoista, viivoja, nappeja, lasia ja pohjanmaalaista puutyötä. Sohvan selkänojakin on taideteos. Koira vaan tuijottaa hyllylle, josko siellä olisi jotain syötävää.

Goodness me, my linocut of a dog has found a wonderful place on the wall of its new home! Black and white, lines, buttons, glass and Ostrobothnian woodwork. The back of the sofa in itself is a work of art. The dog just stares at the shelf, if there is maybe something to eat.

KOIRILLE JA KISSALLE SILMÄT / EYES FOR TWO DOGS AND A CAT

 

Kahden koiran ja yhden kissan silmät on nyt kaiverrettu. Näissä pienissä 15 x 10 cm linopiirroksissa silmät ovat olennaiset kohdat. Jos niiden kaiverrus olisi mennyt ihan pieleen, olisin heittänyt linot roskiin. On kyllä hiukan vaiakea nähdä näistä lopullista silmien ilmettä kun kaiverrettu lino on peilikuva lopullisesta eli "väärinpäin".

The eyes of two dogs and one cat are now carved. In these small 15 x 10 cm linocuts the eyes are essential points. If their engraving had gone completely wrong, I would have thrown the lino sheets in the trash. It's a bit difficult to see the final expression of these eyes, when the engraved lino is a mirror image of the final one, i.e. "wrong way around".

KOIRIA JA KISSA / DOGS AND A CAT

 

Joulunajan välipäivät - laiskaa aikaa! luonnostelin kolme pientä 15 x 10 cm kokoista koira- ja kissalinoa. Näissä silmät ovat se tärkein piirre. Aionkin kaivertaa ne silmät ensimmäisinä.

The days between Christmas holidays - lazy times! I sketched three small 15 x 10 cm dog and cat linocuts. In these, the eyes are the most important feature. I'm going to carve those eyes first.

"MIKÄ NY O?" / "WHAT IS IT?"

 

Välillä on tosi kiva kaivertaa pieniä linopiirroksia, mustavalkoisia, ilman värejä. Yleensä nämä ovat olleet kissoja, mutta nyt syntyi koira. Tämä on varmaan joku pieni vinttikoirarotu, ehkä wippet. Aloitin tämän työn kaiverruksen Iittalassa Suomen maalaustaiteen päivänä heinäkuussa. Mutta siinä ei oikein homma edennyt, mielenkiintoisia keskusteluja näyttelyssä kävijöiden kanssa riitti. Mutta nyt koira on kaivvettu kaikkine turpakarvoineen. Isot silmät ovat ammollaan ja koira ihmettelee "Mikä ny o?" Tämän koko on vain 15 x 10 cm eli A6.

Sometimes it's really nice to carve small linocuts, black and white, without colors. Usually these have been cats, but now a dog was born. This is probably some small greyhound breed, maybe a wippet. I started the engraving of this work in Iittala on the Finnish painting day in July. But things didn't really progress there, there was a lot of interesting conversations with the visitors to the exhibition. But now the dog has been carved with all its whiskers. The big eyes are wide open and the dog wonders "What is it?" The size of this is only 15 x 10 cm, i.e. A6.

NAPPISILMÄ / BUTTON EYE

Pieni linopiirros pienestä koirasta on nyt vedostettu. Tämän nimi on Nappisilmä. Inspiraationa on ystävän valokuva, ja tämä lino kuuluu sarjaani minikokoisia kissoja ja koiria. Koko on vain 15 x 10 cm. Näitä on tosi kiva kaiverrella välipaloina.

A small linocut of a small dog is now pulled. The name for this picture is Button Eye. The inspiration is a photo by a friend, and this lino is one in my series of small cats and dogs. The size is only 15 x 10 cm. It´s really nice to carve these as "snacks".

NAPPISILMÄ - lino / BUTTON EYE - lino

 Linopiirros pienestä koirasta on ehkä valmis. Minun piti mustata lino Sharpie-tussilla, jotta näkisin kaiverretut viivat. Kuva koostuu ohuista viivoista/ karvoista, joiden avulla syntyvät vaaleat ja tummemmat kohdat. Koska linolevy on vaalean harmaa, viivoja oli vaikea nähdä, mutta tussin avulla näen selvemmin, ne kohdat jotka jäävät koholle eli mustat kohdat.

The linocut of a small dog might be now ready. I had to blacken the lino with Sharpie marker pen, so that I could see the carved lines. The picture is made with thin lines / dog´s hair and with the lines I will make the lighter and darker areas. Because the lino sheet is light gray, it was hard to see the lines, but with marker pen I can see mo clearly the places which are left raised ie. black spots.

NAPPISILMÄ - aloitusta / BUTTON EYE - Beginning

 Kissojen kaiverruksen välissä tein pienen linopiirroksen koirasta. Inspiraatio tuli ystäväni valokuvasta. Pieni karvainen koira siinä tuijottaa pyöreillä silmillään kameraa.

Between carving cats I made a small linocut of a dog. The inspiration for this picture is a photo taken by my friend. A small hairy dog is there staring straight to the camera.

KOIRIA IITTALASSA / DOGS IN IITTALA

Vein lisää kehystämättömiä linopiirroksia Naivistit Iittalassa - kesänäyttelyn aulashoppiin. Vielä siis ehtii näyttelyyn ja ostoksillekin. Näyttely on auki 29.8.2021 asti. Myynti näyttelystä tuntuu olevan huima, seinällä on tiuhaan punaisia pilkkuja. Tällä kertaa näyttelyä kierrellessä puhelimeen tarttui koiria.

I took more unframed linocuts to Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition´s lobby shop. So you can still visit the exhibition and even buy art. The exhibition is open till August 29, 2021. There are a lot of red dots on the walls, so the the sales from the exhibition seem to be wild. Walking around the exhibition this time there came dogs to my phone. 

PÄIVÄUNILLA / DAYDREAMING

Toinenkin koiran päiväunia häiritsevä hyppivä kissa on vedostettu. Tämäkin on punainen ja tehty zigzag -tekniikalla leikkaamalla punainen kissa irti muuten mustasta linopiirroksesta. Näin voin vedostaa koko kuvan yhdellä kertaa, samaan aikaan. Keksin nimenkin näille kahdelle hiukan erilaiselle versiolle: Päiväunilla 1 ja 2. Voihan olla niinkin, että koira vain näkee unta hyppivistä kissoista. Linopiirroksen koko on 20 x 20 cm.

The second jumping and the napping dog disturbing cat is now printed, too. This one is also red and made using the zigzag technique and cutting the red cat off the otherwise black linocut. In this way I can print the whole picture at the same time. I figured out even the name for these slightly different version: Daydreaming One & Two. It´s possible that the dog is only dreaming of jumping cats. The size of the linocut is 20 x 20 cm.

KOIRA SOHVALLA: 2 / DOG ON A COUCH: Two

Tein uuden sohvalla nukkuvan koiran ylle hyppäävän kissan linopiirroksena. Tämäkin kissa on aikeissa hypätä sohvan takaa nukkuvan koiran päälle, mutta tämä onkin paljon ystävällisempi kissa. Ehkä se vain hyppää koiran yli häiritsemättä sen unta?

I made a new linocut of a cat jumping on a dog sleeping on a couch. This cat is also planning to jump from  behind the couch on a sleeping dog, but this one is a lot friendlier cat. Perhaps she only jumps over the dog without disturbing his dream?
