Royal Academy of Artsin toinen iso (yli 80 työtä) näyttely Lontoossa oli Félix Vallottonin (1865-1925) retrospekti. Maalauksissa on outoja perspektiivejä, sisäistä jännitystä, rohkeita visuaalisia ratkaisuja. Hän käytti maalaustensa inspiraationa usein valokuvia. Huippua olivat Vallottonin puupiirrokset. Mustat pinnat ja viivat muodostivat jännittäviä kuvioita ja dramaattisia tunnelmia. Mestarillista kaiverrusta! Alkuaikojen asetelmassa oli hurmaaavat kehykset.

Another large exhibition (over 80 works) at the Royal Academy of Arts in London was a retrospect by Félix Vallotton(1865-1925). Vallotton was a new name for me, and now I´m a fan! Vallotton was born in Switzerland, but moved to Paris already at the age of 16. His style is original, completely his own, one could trace even a hint of Naïve Art. At least his works were not in the prevailing style of Impressionism, perhaps more like Post-Impressionism. There are strange perspective in the paintings, inner tensions, bold visual solutions. He used often photographs as inspiration for his works. Vallotton´s woodcuts were the top. Black areas and lines made up exciting patterns and dramatic atmospheres. Masterly carving! An early still life had glorious frames.

HELENE SCHJERFBECK - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
***************
A couple of days in London and a couple of art exhibitions seen. First the direction was towards The Royal Academy of Arts, because there was a retrospective exhibition by Helene Schjefbeck (1862-1946). For the first time I experienced a major (over 60 paintings) exhibition by a Finnish artist in London. There were many familiar works in the exhibition, but also a bunch of nor earlier seen: a few beautiful landscapes from her earlier period, especially a door with a stream of light peeping under was a strong experience. Self portraits filled an entire room, and especially the ones from her later life were touching, almost difficult to watch. One room was full of portraits, relatives and friends. The simple looking, clear lines and colour surfaces amaze me always. Schjerfbeck seems to have been a keen follower of fashion, there were postures and dresses clearly snapped from fashion magazines of that time.

Näitä oli esillä The Royal Acedemy of Artsin kiehtovassa Oceania -näyttelyssä Lontoossa.

Oceania is a vast area in the ocean between Australia and America, sparse small island. From the 1700´s on the Europeans have brought back wares from there, sculptures, textiles and jewelry. These were featured at the intriguing exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts in London. There were so many references to the beginning of modern art from Picasso on. Some of sculptures were quite close to Cubist works and some of textiles could have been stylistically very recent. One part of the exhibition was a huge moving "mural", something I have never seen before - the conquerors made acquaintance with the natives, were bargaining and lashing even their own soldiers.
On the yard of the museum there was Cornelia Parker´s Psycho Barn, a huge wooden installation after Hitchcock´s film Psycho.

CHARLES I - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
The Royal Academy of Artsissa oli Lontoon matkallani iso näyttely Charles I:n hankkimista taideteoksista: King and Collector. Keeper's Roomissa oli hauska Chris Orrin piirrosnäyttely "The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists" (Mahtavien taiteilijoiden surkea elämä) ja eikös vaan sielläkin esiintynyt Picasso.
Olen käynyt Lontoossa taidematkoilla säännöllisesti. Mutta muuttuuko tarjonta Brexitin myötä? Enkä todellakaan halua palata täyttämään maahantulokortteja.

In The Royal Academy of Arts there was a large exhibition of art acquired by Charles I: King and Collector. The collection was split all around the world after the decapitation of Charles I. And what a collection: Rubens, Tizian, Holbein, Van Dyck, Rembrandt. It felt a bit strange that there were so many portraits in the collection, pictures of fellow monarchs but also just ordinary people. Charles I's wife Henrietta Maria had her own collection, and there were pompous allegorical paintings, often of women and angels but also a portrait of Rembrandt's old mother and one painting with a decapitated head of Holofernes. This exhibition made me almost numb: not again one Tizian! In the Keeper's Room there was a funny exhibition of Chris Orr's drawings: "The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists", and I saw once again Picasso.
I have been visiting London`s art museums regularly. But will the art scene change by Brexit? And I really don`t want to go back to filling landing cards.

DALÌ / DUCHAMP - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
Royal Academy of Artsin toinen taidenäyttely Lontoon matkalla oli Dalí/Duchamp: aika yllättävä kombinaatio kahden hyvinkin erilaisen taiteilijan töistä.
**************
The second art exhibition on my trip to London at The Royal Academy of Arts was Dalí/Duchamp: quite a surprising combination of these two seemingly rather different artists. Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was known as a surrealist and Marcel Duchamp (1987-1968) as a dadaist, even the gap between their ages was significant. But this exhibition proved, that they were friends and interested in the same subjects in addition to eroticism. Dalí was creating his own world in his paintings, and even the everyday objects got new meanings like the flowing clocks. Duchamp made art of everyday objects in his readymade art like toilet bowls. The exhibition was really finely put together from objects and works from different eras, a spectator could experience new juxtapositions and realizations at every turn. If only you could have been a fly on the ceiling and heard the conversations between these two artists!
Näyttely on The Royal Academy of Artsissa.

I admit: I had some prejudices when I went to see Jasper Johns´s (b.1930) exhibition. I imagined I'd see just large paintings of the American flag. But the exhibition was a happy surprise, I was enthralled! The matter was probably advanced a bit by the superb introduction in the earphones, which I usually avoid in art exhibitions, luckily not now. There are many repeated themes and subjects in Johns's work: different gratings and line patterns, carefully premeditated variations for example of the four seasons, variable colour compositions and of course flags. The art works were clearly results of a long experimenting and thinking, well thought out works of art, and they were fun to explore. This exhibition was the first stop in London during a few days vacation. The exhibition is at The Royal Academy of Arts.

RAA: HENRI MATISSE & CHARLES TUNNICLIFFE
Kaksi kokemisen arvoista näyttelyä on Royal Academy of Artsissa Lontoossa.
************
There are two exhibition worthy of experience in Royal Academy of Arts in London. Matisse in the Studio exhibited objects, which Henri Matisse (1869-1954) had in his workroom and which were visible in his paintings and other art works. Matisse had collected in his travels objects especially from Near and Far East, Southern Europe and Africa. His studio was full of inspiring sculpture, fabrics, chairs, wooden reliefs, and household vessels. They all sprouted up in his works. It was interesting to see how in Matisse's wood engravings the markings were more like outlines than color surfaces.
The second really interesting small exhibition was introducing Charles Tunnicliffe's (1901-1979) graphic works. The subjects were taken from the nature especially there were birds. The sophisticated art works were full of details.
