JASPER JOHNS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Myönnän: minulla oli ennakkoluuloja Jasper Johnsin ( s. 1930-) näyttelyyn mennessäni. Kuvittelin näkeväni vain isoja maalauksia Amerikan lipusta. Mutta näyttely olikin iloinen yllätys, hurmaannuin ihan! Asiaa varmaan edisti hiukan erinomainen selostus kuulokkeissa, joiden käyttöä yleensä taidenäyttelyissä karsastan, onneksi en nyt. Johnsin töissä näkyi muutamia toistuvia aiheita tai teemoja: erilaisia ristikko- ja viivakuvioita, tarkkaan harkittuja muunnoksia vaikkapa vuodenajoista, erilaisista värisommitelmista ja lipuistakin. Työt olivat selkeästi pitkänkin ajattelun ja kehittelyn tuloksia, tarkoin harkittuja taideteoksia, ja niitä oli nautinto tutkailla. Tämä näyttely oli ensimmäinen kohteeni muutaman päivän matkalla Lontoossa. Näyttely on The Royal Academy of Artsissa.

I admit: I had some prejudices when I went to see Jasper Johns´s (b.1930) exhibition. I imagined I'd see just large paintings of the American flag. But the exhibition was a happy surprise, I was enthralled! The matter was probably advanced a bit by the superb introduction in the earphones, which I usually avoid in art exhibitions, luckily not now. There are many repeated themes and subjects in Johns's work: different gratings and line patterns, carefully premeditated variations for example of the four seasons, variable colour compositions and of course flags. The art works were clearly results of a long experimenting and thinking, well thought out works of art, and they were fun to explore. This exhibition was the first stop in London during a few days vacation. The exhibition is at The Royal Academy of Arts.

Tämä pienehkö näyttely oli ihan helmi: Jasper Johnsin (s. 1930) muunnelmia Francis Baconin Lucian Freud-valokuvasta The Courtauld Galleryssa Lontoossa. Johns oli rypistänyt kuvan ja löytänyt siitä ihan uusia muotoja, mm. pääkallon. Alkuperäinen valokuva on mustavalkoinen, mutta Johns on nähnyt kuvassa myös värejä ja kubistisia muotoja. Tuntui kuin Johns olisi repinyt kuvan auki ja tulkinnut sen kaikki eri tasot eri kokoisina kuvina - kuin tajunnanvirtaa.

This rather small exhibition was a real pearl: Jasper John´s (b. 1930) variations of Francis Bacon´s photograph of Lucian Freud in the Courtauld Gallery, London. Johns had wrinkled the picture and found quite new forms, even a skull. The original photo is black and white, but Johns has seen colours and cubistic forms in the picture. It felt like Johns had ripped open and interpreted all it´s different levels in different sized paintings - like stream of consciousness.
