***************
A couple of days in London and a couple of art exhibitions seen. First the direction was towards The Royal Academy of Arts, because there was a retrospective exhibition by Helene Schjefbeck (1862-1946). For the first time I experienced a major (over 60 paintings) exhibition by a Finnish artist in London. There were many familiar works in the exhibition, but also a bunch of nor earlier seen: a few beautiful landscapes from her earlier period, especially a door with a stream of light peeping under was a strong experience. Self portraits filled an entire room, and especially the ones from her later life were touching, almost difficult to watch. One room was full of portraits, relatives and friends. The simple looking, clear lines and colour surfaces amaze me always. Schjerfbeck seems to have been a keen follower of fashion, there were postures and dresses clearly snapped from fashion magazines of that time.
