DRAWING IN SILVER AND GOLD -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Pari päivää Lontoossa, ja taidetta kyllä riittää! British Museumin huone 90, Prints and Drawings Gallery on yksi vakiokohde. Nyt siellä oli näyttely Drawing in Silver and Gold - Leonardo to Jasper Johns. Hopeakynäpiirustus (silverpointi/metalpoint) on Suomessa aika tuntematon taidemuoto. Tekniikka on vanha. Erityisesti hopeakynää varten pohjustetulle paperille piirretään tai melkein  raavitaan terävällä metalliterällä, joka jättää himmeän ja hennon jäljen. Taiteilijat käyttivät hopeakynäpiirustusta etenkin luonnosten tekoon. Siksi piirrosten spontaani ja joskus keskeneräiseltä tai haparoivalta tuntuva jälki on kiinnostava. Muotokuvissa ja erityisesti kuvissa eläimistä, turkiksista ja kankaista hopeakynällä saatiin hienoja materiaalivaikutelmia ja kuvioita. Albrecht Dûrerin (1471-1528) koiran turkin jokainen karva ja jänteet näkyvät selvästi. Hendrick Golzius (1558-1617) oli tekniikan mestari ja hänen omakuvassaankin on täydellinen sävyjen tasapaino. Nykyisinkin löytyy vielä hopeakynäpiirustuksen taitajia. Frank Stellan (s. 1925) omakuvassa toistuvat hauskasti tukan ja oravan töyhdöt. 

Dulwich Picture Galleryn kiinnostavaan näyttelyyn M.C Escherin taiteesta emme päässeet ollenkaan sisään, mikä pettymys!  Emme voineet odottaa sisäänpääsyä yli kaksi tuntia, eikä lippuja myyty seuraavalle päivälle. Jos aioit mennä tänne näyttelyyn aika kaukana keskustasta Southwarkissa, hanki liput netistä etukäteen.

A couple of days in London, and there really is a lot of art! British Museums room 90, Prints and Drawings Gallery is one of the constant targets. Now there was the exhibition Drawing in Silver and Gold - Leonardo to Jasper Johns. The technique of silverpoint or metalpoint drawing is an old one. The drawing is done with a sharp silver or metal stylus on a specially primed paper. The stylus draws or almost scrapes a fragile and soft line to the paper. Artists used the silverpoint mainly for their drafts or sketches. That´s why the spontaneous, unfinished or blundering impression of the drawings feels so interesting. Silverpoint was a good technique for drawing portraits, animals, furs, textiles or textures. Albrecht Dürer's (1471-1528) dog`s every hair or tendon is clearly visible. Hendrick Golzius (1558-1617) was the master of this technique and in his self-portrait has a perfect balance of nuances. There are masters of silverpoint even nowadays. In Frank Stella's (b. 1925) self-portrait the tufts of his hair and the squirrels back repeat funnily. 

What a disappointment, we did not get in to the interesting M.C. Escher exhibition in Dulwich Picture Gallery! We could not wait the right time slot over two hours, and they didn't sell tickets for the next day.
