NOITIA - NÄYTTELY / WITCHES - EXHIBITION

Muutamankin päivän matkalla Lontoossa ehtii tutustua aika moneen upeaan näyttelyyn. British Museumin huone 90 on aina mielenkiintoinen. Siellä on esillä grafiikkaa museon kokoelmista. Tämänkertainen näyttely oli erityisen hyvä: "Witches and wicked bodies / Noitia ja häijyjä hahmoja". Noituuden historiaa näyttely esitteli renessanssista 1800-luvun loppuun. Vaikka miehetkin toimivat noitina ja ennustajina, naisia vainottiin ja tapettiin enemmän noituuden harjoittamisen takia. Usein naiset nähtiin häijyinä ja ilkeinä noitina, jotka pystyivät taikomaan vihollisilleen epäonnea ja kärsimyksiä. Miesnoidat liittyivät taisteluihin ja voimannäyttöön. Seksuaalisuuden pelko oli usein kuvissa aiheena, myöhemmin myös jonkunlainen naisellisen mystisyyden glorifiointi.  Näyttelyn kiinnostavin osa töistä oli etsauksia tai puupiirroksia 1500-luvulta: mielikuvituksellisia hahmoja, pääkalloja, puhdasta pelkoa ja ennakkoluuloja, hienosti tulkittuina varjoina ja valoina.

During a couple of days in London I managed to explore quite a many fine exhibitions. British Museum´s room 90 is always interesting. There you can see graphic works from the collections of the museum. This time the exhibition was exceptionally fine: "Witches and wicked bodies". The exhibition displayed the history of witchcraft from the Renaissance to the end of the 1800`s. Even though also men practiced witchcraft, mainly women were persecuted and killed as witches. Often women were seen wicked and evil witches, who could enchant bad luck and suffering to their enemies. Men witches were linked more to battles, display of power and winning. Also the fear of sexuality was often a subject for the art works, later also some kind of glorifying of womanly mysticism. The most interesting part of the exhibition were the etchings or woodcuts from the 1500`s: weird characters, skulls, pure fear and prejudice finely depicted as shadows and lights.
