NYT KAIKKI MÄKEÄ LASKEMAAN! / NOW EVERYONE, LET'S GO DOWN THE HILL!

 

Tätäkään versiota A4-kokoisista linopiirroksistani Pispalasta en ole vedostanut yhdessä 20 X 60 cm kokoisena. Arvelin aiemmin, että niitä ei soisi yhdistää alaosassa olevien kattojen tai niiden osien takia. Tämä maisema oli vain yläosa isommasta neljän A4-palan kuvasta, jossa alaosassa näkyi talot kokonaisina. Kuvassa on iso liuta Pispalan maamerkkejä, haulitorni, Näsinneulan näkötorni, Pispalan koulu, Pispalan portaat, Pyynikin näkötorni ja jopa jo purettu hyppyrimäki eli Tahmelan hoppa. Haulitornin ja pari kuplavolkkaria näkötornin juurella väritin käsin.

I haven't printed this version of my A4-sized linocuts of Pispala together in 20 X 60 cm size either. I previously thought that they shouldn't be combined because of the roofs or parts of them at the bottom. This landscape was just the top of a larger picture of four A4 pieces, where the houses were visible in their entirety at the bottom. The picture shows a large group of Pispala landmarks, the shot tower, the Näsinneula observation tower, Pispala school, Pispala stairs, Pyynikki observation tower and even the already demolished ski jumping hill, or Tahmela hoppa. I hand-colored the shot tower and a couple of bubble Volkwagens at the foot of the observation tower.

Ensimmäinen A5-kokoinen, 20 x 15 cm linopiirros Pispalasta on valmis. Tässä kuvassa on  pitkät portaat ja taloja. Aikomukseni on tehdä neljä tai viisi tällaista aika pientä linoa, jotka voisin yhdistää erilaisiksi versioiksi: kaksi yhteen, kolme yhteen, neljä yhteen tai viis yhteen, siis enintään 20 x 75 cm kuvaksi. Ja miksi ei sitten voisi ajatella talojen yläpuolelle pastellitaivasta? Siinäpä sitä hommaa pimeneciin syyspäiviin.

The first A5 sized, 20 x 15 cm linocut of Pispala is ready. This picture shows long stairs and houses. My intention is to make four or five such small linos, which I could combine into different versions: two together, three together, four together or five together, so a maximum of 20 x 75 cm for a picture. And why not think of a pastel sky above the houses? That's it for the dark autumn days.

RUUHKAA RULLAKIOSKILLA / CONGESTION AT THE ROUND KIOSK

Olihan taas nurmikkojyrälle käyttöä! Vedostettiin kesämökillä kovalla lattialla nurmikkojyrää ja muitakin välineitä (Sláma Press ja kaulin) käyttäen 80 x 60 cm kahdeksasta palasesta koottu linopiirros. Nyt mukana on yhtenä osana rullakioski, jonka väritin käsin linon kuivuttua. Kioskilla on ruuhkaa, kissat parveilevat sen ympärillä herkkuja haistellen. Tämä iso linopiirros on nyt Iittalassa toivon mukaan Naivistit Iittalassa- kesänäyttelyyn menossa - tai sitten se ei mahdu seinälle. Saa nähdä!

My garden roller was working again! We printed this eight piece 80 x 60 cm linocut at the summer cottage on a hard floor using the garden roller and other equipment (Sláma Press and rolling pin). Now there is the round kioski as one piece, and I coloured the kiosk by hand when the lino was dry. There is a congestion at the round kiosk, carts are circling around smelling some treats. This large linocut is now in Iittala - I´m hoping that it will be at Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition next summer - or then it will not fit on the walls. Remains to be seen!

KOLME KISSAA

 

Kolme kissaa tanssii Pispalan portailla. Keskimmäisen turkkia on väritetty keltaiseksi käsin. Pieniä jäniksiä ilmestyi taustalle kukkien joukkoon. Pispalassa todella jäniksiä näkyy ainakin öisin, loikkivat sinne Pyynikin harjulta. Tämän linopiirroksen koko on A3, 40 x 30 cm.

Three cats are dancing on Pispala stairs. The fur of the middle one is hand coloured yellow. Small hares appeared in the middle of flowers in the background. Hared really are seen in Pispala at least at night, they are jumping there from the Pyynikki ridge. The size of this linocut is A3, 40 x 30 cm.

My linocut of three cats on the Pispala steps is now printed. It is always nice to inspects the linocuts in its carved and inked stage. Does it separate somehow from the final print which is a mirror image? The size of the picture is 20 x 30 cm.

My linocut " With Cats on Pispala Steps" is now carved. The stairs curve to the right - so on the lino plate they are on the left. There came quite a lot of houses on the Pispala ridge, and it was fun to carve again windows, wall panelings, roofs and chimneys. Printing next!

Enpä tunnu kyllästyvän millään Pispalan portaisiin - ja kissoihin linopiirroksissa. Nyt portaat ilmestyivät kuvan oikealle puolelle ja portailla on peräti kolme kissaa, ehkä äiti ja kaksi poikasta. Pehmeä softcut -levyä on ihana kaivertaa terävillä Pfeil -terillä, homma sujuu kuin leikiten. Kuvan koko tulee olemaan 20 x 30 cm.

I just seem not to get enough of Pispala steps - and cats in my linocuts. Now the steps appeared on the right side of the picture, and on the steps there are three cats, perhaps the mother and two of he kittens. The soft Softcut plate is lovely to carve with sharp Pfeil cutters, it's just like playing. The size of the picture will be 20 x 30 cm.

Kuvan koko on 30 x 40 cm, joten siihen mahtuu kaikki olennainen: Pispalan portaat, paljon erimallisia ja kokoisia taloja, ikkunoita, kattoja, aitoja ja pulteriaitoja. Kissa ja koira ikkunoissaan jo odottavat malttamattomina ulos pääsyä. Pispala on minulle ihan ehtymätön aihe, joten ei tämäkään lino ole viimeinen lajissaan.

The linocut of a Sunday morning in Pispala is ready. The size of this picture is 30 x 40 cm, so there is room for all the essentials: Pispala stairs, a lot of different sized and shaped houses, windows, roofs, fences and stone walls. A cat and a dog behind their windows are already impatiently waiting to get out. Pispala is an inexhaustible subject for me, so this lino is not the last of its kind.

Linolevy Pispalan sunnuntaiaamusta on nyt kaiverrettu. Kuvassa on portaat vasemmassa reunassa (levyllä ne näkyvät peilikuvana eli oikealla), paljon taloja, aitoja ja pulterikiviä. Kaikki ihmiset ovat kotonaan viettämässä sunnuntaiaamua, kuka mitenkin. Vain ikkunoissa kissa ja koira jo haluaisivat ulos. Tämä levy on japanilaista vinyyliä ja kaiverrusterät suosikkejani Pfeilin teriä.

The lino plate of a Sunday morning in Pispala is now ready. There are in the picture the stairs on the left side (they are on  the plate as a mirror image on the right), a lot of houses, fences and round stones. All the people are at home spending their Sunday morning, how ever they want. Only a cat and a dog at the windows would already like to be outside. This plate is Japanese vinyl, and the carving tools are my favorite Pfeil blades.

Uusi Pispala-lino on aluillaan. Tästä tulee aika iso, 30 x 40 cm eli A3. Haluan kuvaan tietenkin Pispalan portaat. Nyt portaat ovat kuvan reunassa ja jatkuvat harjun päälle asti. Portaat kaiverretaan viimeisinä linolevylle. Portaiden vierellä on paljon taloja niin kuin niitä Pispalassa on. Mielessäni on sunnuntaiaamun tunnelma. Tavoittelen jotain rauhallista tunnelmaa kaivertamalla talojen vaaka- ja pystysuoria laudoituksia, monenmallisia ikkunoita ja kattoja. Kuviot ja pinnat luovat kuvaan hiljaisen rytmin.

A new linocut of Pispala is at the beginning. This one will be quite large: 30 x 40 cm i.e. A3. Of course I want Pispala stairs in the picture. Now the stairs are on the left side of the picture and they continue to the top of the ridge. The stairs are the last I carve on the lino plate. There will be a lot of houses on the side of the stairs as there really are in Pispala. In my mind I have the feeling of a Sunday morning. I´m seeking some kind of peaceful feeling carving the horizontal and vertical wood cladding, many shapes of windows and roofs. The patterns and surfaces create a silent rhythm to the picture.

LINTUJEN KARKELOT / BIRDS GALORE

Lintujen karkelot - linopiiros/pastellityö on valmis. Tämä on toinen Karkelot-sarjaa, jonka juuri perustin. Aikaisempi työ tähän sarjaan oli Korrojen karkelot. Tässä uudessakin on alaosassa linopiirros, nyt Pispalasta portaineen ja haulitorneineen. Kuu on myös irrallinen linopiirros, nyt pronssinvärisenä. Ja linnut, niitä on noin 50 linopiirrosta (vaikea laskea tarkkaa lukua) ja mukana on mustia, harmaita ja valkoisia lintuja. Tämän lintuparven vedostus onnistui kun tein pastellitaivaan yksiväriseksi ilman pilviä.

Birds Galore linocut & pastel work is ready. This is the second one in my series of Galore, I just set up this series. The earlier work in this series was Bugs Galore. This new one also has a linocut at the bottom, now of Pispala with the stairs and shot tower. The moon is also a separate linocut, now bronze coloured. And birds, there are about 50 linocuts of them (hard to calculate the exact number), and there are black, gray and white birds. Printing this flock of birds was now possible when I made the pastel sky plain without any clouds.

Toinen versio Karkelot-sarjaan on tekeillä. Tämä on Lintujen karkelot, ja nyt aion saada kuvaan mahtumaan kokonaisen lintoparven. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta ja taivaalla paljon linopiirroslintuja. Taivaan on oltava aika yksivärinen, ja sehän  tehdään pehmeillä pastelliväreillä.

The second version for my Galore series is under way. This will be Birds Galore, and now I want to add to the picture a whole flock of birds. At the bottom there is a linocut of Pispala and on the sky there are a lot of linocut birds. The sky has to be quite even coloured, so it will me made with soft pastels.

VENYTTELYÄ PISPALAN PORTAISSA / STRETCHING ON PISPALA STEPS

Pispalan portaat näyttää olevan ehtymätön inspiraation lähde. Nyt uudessa linopiirroksessa portailla venyttelee kissa, ja toinenkin pieni tasapainottelee kaiteella. Pispalan portaat tunnetaan tosi haastavana harjoittelumaastona, jossa urheilijat hyppivät rappuja ylös ja alas, ja varmasti myös venyttelevät ennen tai jälkeen treeniensä. Raput tuntuvat jatkuvan melkein taivaaseen, ja pari ihmistä seisoo ihan rappujen päässä. Taloja on aina kiva kaivertaa. Pidän erityisesti tässä kuvassa kahden talon valkoisista kohdista, ne tuovat mielestäni kuvaan kontrastia.

The Pispala Steps seem to be a endless source of inspiration  for me. Now in this new linocut a cat is stretching on the steps, and an another one is balancing on the rail. The Pispala steps are known as a very challenging training ground, where the athletes are seen jumping up and down the steps, and surely are also stretching after or before their training. The steps seem to almost reach the sky, and a couple of people are standing just on top of the stairs. The houses are nice to carve. I especially like in this picture the white parts on two of the houses, they bring some kind of contrast to the picture in my mind.

PISPALAN PORTAITA ALAS / PISPALA STEPS DOWN

Tarkoituksenani oli tehdä uusi Pispala-aiheinen linopiirros, jonka vedostaisin erilaisten pilvi- ja taivasaiheisten pastellien tai monoprinttien alaosaksi. Aiheesta syntyi kuva portaista, jotka laskeutuvat jyrkästi kohti Pyhäjärveä. Kädessäni olivat jo sakset, ja aioin leikata linon yläosan pois kun huomasin, että linopiirroksen yläosassahan on kuin sadepilviä. Kuvasta voisi sadepilvineen vedostaa myös ihan oman kuvansa. Teinkin sitten sekä 20 x 30 cm kokoisen linopiirroksen pilvineen että pohjan 50 x 30 cm sekatekniikkatöille peittämällä pilvet teipillä vedostettaessa. Voisin vielä kokeilla pilvien ja järven vedostusta sinisinä.

My aim was to make a new Pispala-themed linocut, which i would print as a bottom part for different cloud or sky-themed pastel drawings or monoprints. The subject formed to a picture of steps that are descending sharply towards the lake Pyhäjärvi. I had already scissors in my hand, and I was about to cut away the upper side of the lino when I noticed that there are like rain clouds on the upper part of the picture. Why not print a whole new picture of the lino with the clouds. So I made both: a 20 x 30 cm linoprint with the clouds and a base for 50 x 30 cm mixed media works by covering the clouds with a piece of tape when printing. Still, I could try to print the clods and the lake blue. 

PISPALAN HARJU / PISPALA RIDGE

Tämä aika iso (40 X 60 cm) linoleikkaus on jo toinen, johon tänä kesänä tarvitsin nurmikkojyrää. Ilman kunnon painoa tätä on käsin aika vaikea vedostaa. Pispalan harjua ei ihan tällaisena oikeasti näe, samalla kertaa kaikkea Pispalan haulitornista Pyynikin näkötorniin. Kuvan inspiraationa oli viime talven kävely Näsijärven jäällä, josta harjun näki kauempaa kuin kävelylenkillä Tahmelan rannassa. Näkymä jäi mieleeni ja muuttui kesäiseksi: veneitä rannassa, kasvimaan pienet palstat vierekkäin täynnä kasveja ja puutarhatyökaluja, tietenkin Pispalan portaat, vanhat puutalot rinteessä ja jopa järven yllä nähty kotka.

This quite large (40 X 60 cm) linocut was already the second, which required this summer the use of my garden roller. Without decent weight this kind of lino is rather difficult to print by hand. You can not see the Pispala ridge for real just like this picture, at one glance all from the Pispala shot tower to the Pyynikki observation tower. The inspiration for this linocut was a walk on the Näsijärvi ice last winter. From the ice you could see the Pispala Ridge from farther off than just walking on the Tahmela shore. The perspective stayed in my mind and changed into a summery view: boat on the shore, the small allotment on the vegetable fields side by side full of plants and garden tools, of course the Pispala steps, old wooden houses along the slope, and even an eagle seen over the lake.

SUURIN LINOLEIKKAUKSENI / MY BIGGEST LINOCUT

Moniosainen linoleikkaukseni Pispalan portaista ehti nyt kahdeksaan osaan, suurimmaksi toistaiseksi. Kokoa tälle linolle tuli 80 X 60 cm. Vedostaminen käsin on ilman mitään erityisiä apuvälineitä on vaikeaa, mutta minullahan on nurmikkojyrä. Tähän nurmikkojyrään mahtuu 70 litraa vetta, joten sillä saa aikaan aika hyvän painon. Jälkikin on mielestäni ihan hyvä.

Pispala  Steps, my as yet biggest linocut gathered from eight parts is now ready and printed. Its size is now 80 X 60 cm. To pull this sized lino by hand without any special tools is quite difficult, but I have a garden roller. This roller is filled with 70 liters of water, so It is possible to get quite a good pressure. And the end result is fair enough.

ISOT LINOT /BIG LINOS

Isokokoisten linoleikkausten vedostus käsin on hankalaa. Aina tuntuu jäävän kohtia, joihin väri ei ole tarttunut kunnolla tai sitten väriä on liikaa ja kuva menee "tukkoon". Ja hyvää paperia menee hukkaan. Tein linoleikkauksen neljästä palasta niin, että kuvan koko on 40 x 60 cm. Lisäsin kuvaan vielä kaksi palaa, jolloin kuvan kooksi tuli 60 x 60 cm.  Käsin vedostamalla sain aikaan vain pari koevedosta ja hukkapaperia aikamoisen sadattelun saattelemana. Itseoppineena naivistina ja taiteilijajärjestöihin kuulumattomana harrastelijana ammattimaiset prässit tai painokoneet ovat ulottumattomissa. Sitten näin internetissä kuvan linoleikkausten vedostuksesta käyttämällä apuna nurmikkojyrää. Jopa maantiejyrällä on vedostettu tosi suuria metrien mittaisia linoja. Ostinkin sitten vedellä täytettävän nurmikkojyrän, ja sehän toimi. Nyt pystyn paperia haaskaamatta vedostamaan pienet sarjat näitä isompia linoleikkauksiani. Voisikohan tätä linoleikkausta Pispalan portaista kasvattaa vielä kahdella palasella 80 x 60 cm kokoiseksi?

It is really hard to pull bigger linocuts by hand. There seems always to remain spots, where there is not enaough ink, or then tere is too much ink and the picture becomes "clogged". And a lot of good paper is wasted. I made a linocut of four pieces so that it´s measures are 40 x 60 cm. I then added two more pieces, and the siee grew to 60 x 60 cm. Pulling these linocuts by hand I managed to get only a couple of proofs and a lot of waste paper - and a lot of swearing. As a self-taught Naïvist and amateur outside the artist organizations I have no access to professional press or printing machines. The I saw in the internet a picture where somebody used a garden roll pulling linocuts. Even road rolls have been used printing really big several metres long linocuts. So I bought a garden roll and filled it with water, and it worked. Now I can pull a smalll series of my bigger linocuts without wasting paper. Could I enlarge this linocut of Pispala steps still with two pieces to 80 x 60 cm?
