KISSAT JA SATEENKAARI / CATS & RAINBOW

 

Kaksi kissaa puussa ja taivaalla pöllö sekä tikka. Ja kissojen yllä näkyy täysi sateenkaari, hiukan kaksoiskaartakin sekä aika dramaattinen taivas, pieniä valkoisia lintujakin sateenkaaren yllä. Tästä työstä tulikin sitten aika värikäs kun väritin vielä käsin kissatkin. Kuvan alaosassa on kaksi linopiirrosta kissoista ja linnuista. Sateenkaaren yllä olevat vaaleat linnut ovat pieniä linoleimasimia. Taivas ja sateenkaari on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Nimeksi tälle linopastellille annoin Eino Leinon Sateenkaari-runoa mukaillen: "Kaari korkea kohosi, sitä kissat ihmetteli".  Tämä työ on isohko: 50 x 60 cm. Ja arvaa, oliko kiva tehdä, no oli!

Two cats in a tree and an owl & woodpecker in the sky. And over the cats can be seen a full rainbow, a bit of double rainbows plus a quite dramatic sky, even small white birds over the rainbow. Well, this work became rather colourful when I coloured by hand even the cats. At the bottom of the picture there are two linocuts of cats and birds. The birds over the rainbow are small lino stamps. The sky and rainbow were done with soft pastels. This lino & pastel work got its name after Eino Leino´s poem Rainbow: "The Arch Rose So High, And That´s What Cats Are Admiring". This work is quite big: 50 x 60 cm. And guess, was is fun to make, oh yes!

Sarjani linopiirros/pastellitöitä Pispalasta ja linnuista on taas saanut yhden lisäyksen. Olen nimennyt näitä kuvia Juicen musiikin mukaan ja tämän nimi on "Ota minut sinun uniin" kappaleesta Syksyn sävel. Kuvassa taivas tummuu, aurinko laskee ja yö saapuu Pispalaan. Ja niin saapuu myös parvi lintuja. Kuvan alaosa, kuu ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia, taivas pehmeää pastellia. Koko: 70 x 40 cm.

My series of linocut & pastel woks of Pispala and birds has increased again by one picture. I have named these works after Juice´s music and this one is called "Take Me to Your Dreams" from a piece Autumn Tune (Syksyn sävel). In this picture the sky is darkening, sun is setting and the night is arriving to Pispala. And so arriving a flock of birds. The bottom part of the picture, moon and birds are linocuts, the sky is soft pastel. Size: 70 x 40 cm.

Linnut alkoivat lentää Pispalan ylle tummuvalle taivaalle. Linnut ovat linopiirroksia, tavallaan kuin leimasimia. Asettelen ne ensin ylösalaisen eli niin kuin ne vedostettaessa kuvaan painetaan, suunnilleen oikeille paikoilleen. Tässä kuvassa käytän kaikkia isompia linolintujani: tiaista, kolibria, harakkaa ja rastasta.

Birds started to fly over Pispala on the darkening sky. The birds are linocuts, like stamps. I place them first up side down, just like they will be pressed on the picture when printing them, approximately on their final places. I use in this picture all of my larger birds: a tit, hummingbird, magpie and thrush.

Linopiirrokseen Pispalasta ja kuusta oli jännittävää lisätä taivas pastellipiirroksena. Tila on aika iso (kuvan koko on 70 x 40 cm) ja aina ei tiedä, millaiseksi lopputulos tulee. Koskaan taivas ei tunnu olevan samanlainen kuin jossain aiemmassa tämän sarjan työssä. Tapanani on sotkea pehmeää pastellia sormilla ja jopa kovalla siveltimellä useita kerroksia päällekkäin. Jossain vaiheessa sitten tuntuu, että nyt saa riittää. Tässä kuvassa ylempi osa taivasta on vaaleampi, joten eiköhän sinne ole tulossa lintuparvi.

It was exciting to add a pastel drawing as a sky to my linocut of PIspala and moon. The space is quite big (size of the picture: 70 x 40 cm) and you don´t always know exactly how the sky will look like at the end. The sky seems never to be same as in some earlier picture of this series. I use to mess with soft pastel with my fingers and even stiff brush adding several layers on top of each other. At some stage I then decide, that now it´s enough. In this picture the upper part of the sky is lighter, so there might be birds there in the next stage.

OUTOON VALOON / TOWARD STRANGE LIGHT

Lino & pastellityö "Kohti etelää" on nyt valmis ja saanut uuden nimenkin Juicen kappaleesta: "Outoon valoon". Parvi linopiirroksia linnuista on lisätty kuvan oikeaan yläkulmaan, mukana uusimmat ja isoimmatkin: rastas, kolibri ja tiainen. Tavoittelin taivaan väreissä kesäistä varhaisaamun tai illan hämyistä tunnelmaa. Linnut jo kerääntyvät parviksi ja suunnittelevat matkaa talveksi etelään. Taivaassa on mielestäni jotain muistumaa William Turnerin pilviin. Tämä työ on osa isompaa sarjaa pastellitaivaita, 70 x 40 cm.

Lino & pastel work "To the South" is now ready, and it even has a new name after Juices music: "Toward Strange Light".  A flock of birds has been added on the upper right corner of the picture, with the newest and larger one: a thrush, hummingbird and tit. I was seeking a hazy atmosphere of an early summer´s morning or night. Birds are already congregating into flocks and planning a trip to the south for the winter. In my mind there is on the sky some reminders of William Turner´s clouds. This work is one in my series of larger pastel skies, 70 x 40 cm.

Kohti etelää - lino & pastellityön taivas on valmis. Käytin Pan Pastel -värejä ja paljon valkoista. Tavoitteena oli saada utuinen taivas ja halo kuun ympärille. Ihan vähän pinkkiäkin tuli oikeaan alaosaan pilven reunalle. Nyt puuttuvat vielä linolinnut kuvan oikeaan yläreunaan.

To the South lino & pastel work´s sky is now ready. I used Pan Pastel colours and a lot of white. My purpose was to get a hazy sky and a halo around the moon. Just a little bit of pink appeared on the border of a cloud on the right side. Now are missing only birds on the right up corner of the picture.

Linnut Warouxin linnan yllä on nyt valmis. Kuvan alaosa, kuu ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Taivas on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Aikomukseni on lähettää tämä kuva syksyn naivistiseen näyttelyyn Warouxin linnassa syys-lokakuussa. Koronapandemia asettaa tietenkin omat ehtonsa - saa nähdä totautuuko näyttely. Joka tapauksessa Corinne Delhaye jo organisoi näyttelyä Belgiassa ja uskoo, että ovet avataan 11.9.2020.

Birds over the Castle of Waroux is now ready. The bottom part of the picture and the birds and moon are all linocuts. The sky was done with soft pastels. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. My aim to send the picture to a Naïve Art group exhibition at the Waroux Castle in September - October. Of course the coronavirus pandemic set its own conditions - let´s see if the exhibition will happen at all. In any case, Corinne Delhaye is already organizing the exhibition in Belgium and she believes that the exhibition will open September, 11/2020.

SYKSY TEKEE TULOAAN / AUTUMN IS COMING

Sekatekniikkatyö "Syksy tekee tuloaan" on nyt valmis. Korennot, alaosan kissat penkillä ja pieni kuu (tai aurinko) ovat linopiirroksia. Taivas on pastellipiirros. En ole ollenkaan varma, onko oranssi taivas illan vai aamun sarastusta. Mielessäni tuollainen taivas ja valo voisi olla silloin kun syksy tekee tuloaan. Kuussa (tai auringossa) on pieniä kimallepuikkoja samoin kuin valon heijastuksessa järven pintaan. Tämä 50 x 30 cm työ on menossa Art Pispalan tammikuun naivisminäyttelyyn.

My mixed media work "Autumn is Coming" is now ready. The dragonflies, cat on a bench at the bottom of the picture and the moon (or sun) are linocuts. The sky is a pastel drawing. I am not sure at all if the orange sky is an evening or morning dawn. In my mind this kind of sky and light might happen when the autumn is coming. There are small sticks of glitter on the moon (or sun) and also on the surface of the lake when the light is reflecting there. This 50 x 30 cm sized work will be at the Naïve Art exhibition at Art Pispala Gallery next January.

Uusi versio lino- ja pastellipiirrossarjaan on taas tulossa. Nyt kuvassa on mukana korentoja, pieni kuu ja kissat penkillä. Päivät ovat nyt Suomessa lyhyimmillään, valoa ei ole kuin muutama tunti päivässä. Valokuvani uuden työn tekovaiheesta ovat siis aika pimeitä, laskeva aurinko heijastuu kuvan pinnasta. Ennen korentojen vedostusta levitin siipien kohdalle hiukan pastelliväriä. Pastellitaivas tulee olemaan osaksi oranssinvärinen.

A new version to my series of linocuts & pastel drawing is again on its way. Now there will be dragonflies in the picture, a small moon and cats on a bench. The days are now at their shortest in Finland, there is light only a couple hours in a day. My photos of the making of this new work are rather dark, the setting sun is reflected from the surface of the picture. Before printing the dragonflies I spread a little pastel colour under the wings. The pastel sky will be partly orange.

Linopiirros/pastellityö sateenkaaresta on nyt valmis. Täydellisen sateenkaaren sisällä oleva osa on vaaleampi kuin taivas sateenkaaren ulkopuolella. Siihen varmaan vaikuttavat ilmassa kimmeltävät pienet sadepisarat. Sateenkaaren puolipyöreää muotoa toistaa kuvan yläosassa oleva hyönteisparvi.

The linocut & pastel drawing of a rainbow is now ready. The inner part of a full rainbow is brighter than the sky outside the rainbow. I think the reason are the tiny rain drops glimmering in the air. The semi-circular shape of the rainbow is repeated on the upper side of the picture by a flock of insects.

Kun  Suomen sää on synkkä ja lähestytään vuoden pimeintä aikaa, on hauska tehdä jotain kesäistä kuvaa. Aloitin uuden 50 x 30 cm kokoisen pastellitaivaan sarjaan linopiirroksia ja pastellipiirrosta. Tässä kuvassa on  täydellinen sateenkaari Pispalan yllä. Yläosaan on vielä tulossa parvi hyönteisiä linopiirroksina.

When the weather in Finland is gloomy and we are approaching the darkest time of the year, it's fun to make a summery picture. A started a new 50 x 30 cm sized pastel sky to my series of linocuts and pastel drawings. There is a full rainbow in this picture over Pispala. On the upper part there will still be a flock of insects.

Sekatekniikkatyö Syksyn lehdet on nyt valmis. Alaosassa on osa jo pari vuotta sitten tekemästäni linopiirroksesta, tietenkin Pispalaa ja portaat. Kuu ja lehdet ovat myös linopiirroksia. Kuu välkkyy hopeisena, sitä on aika mahdoton saada kuvaan. Taivas oranssinharmaine pilvineen on pastellipiirros. Pääasiassa käytän ihania PanPastel -värejä. Tämänkin koko on 50 x 30 cm.

My mixed media work Autumn Leaves is now ready. ON the bottom part there is a part of already a couple years ago made linocut, of course the subject is Pispala and the steps. The moon and leaves are also linocuts. The moon is glittering silver, it´s quite impossible to capture in  the picture. The sky and orange & gray clouds is a pastel drawing. I use mainly PanPastel colours. The size is 50 x 30 cm like all in this series.

Uusi pastellitaivas on taas aluillaan. Tämä on yksi lisää sekatekniikkasarjaani, joissa yhdistelen linopiirroksia ja pastellipiirrosta. Nyt taivaasta tulee aika dramaattinen. Kuvan yläkulmassa leijuu pari syksyn lehteä. Vedostin lehdet ensin  hopeavärillä ja sitten mustalla ja punaisella. Tavoite oli saada lehtiin jonkunlainen liihotteleva tunnelma. Kuu on vedostettu hopeavärillä ja siinä on kimalletta.

A new pastel sky is again at the beginning. This is one more to my series of mixed media works, where I combine linocuts and pastel drawing. Now the sky will be rather dramatic. There are a couple of autumn leaves floating on the upper corner of the picture. I printed the leaves first with silver colour and then black and red. My aim was to achieve some kind of hovering effect. The moon was printed with silver colour and there is glitter on it.

Silloin tällöin putkahtaa ilmoille näitä erilaisia versioita Pispalan haulitorni -linopiirroksesta pastellitaivaalla. Nyt taivas on tummansininen, mutta taivaanrannalla on vaalea päivänkajo kun kuu on nousemassa. Luulen, että tässä pakkanen kiristyy. Kuvan koko on 30 x 20 cm.

Now and then pops up new versions of my linocut of Pispala shot tower with a pastel sky. Now the sky is dark blue, but there is still pale light on the horizon when the moon has rising. I think that the air is getting freezing. The size of the picture is 30 x 20 cm.

The Flock of Birds linocut & pastel drawing of migratory birds is now ready. The picture is quite big: 50 x 30 cm. The bottom part and the birds are linocuts anf the sky is a pastel drawing. There are already in my mind new versions of this subjects, because the flock of birds can be any shape at all.

HOPEINEN KUU / SILVERY MOON

Toinen versio nauravasta kuusta on hopeinen. Kokeilin kiilteen lisäystä vielä märälle hopeiselle kuun pinnalle, ja tarttuihan se siihen kiinni. Nyt kuu kimaltelee hienosti valon osuessa siihen (video ohessa). Kuunsillallakin kimaltaa. Viisi kissaa istuu Pyynikin näköalapaikan penkillä. Taivas on pastellipiirrosta, kissat, sulat ja kuu linopiirroksia.  Tämä kuva on aika iso: 50 x 30 cm.

The second version of the laughing moon is silvery. I tested adding glitter already on the surface of the wet silvery moon, and the glitter really got stuck to the moon. Now the moon is glistening fine when the light hits it ( video attached). Its sparkling even on the moon bridge. Five cats are sitting on a vantage point bench in the Pyynikki National Park. The sky is a pastel drawing, feathers, cats and the moon are linocuts. This picture is quite big: 50 x 30 cm.

Naurava kuu pääsi nyt taivaalle. Kuunsiltaa katselee viisi kissaa penkiltä, joka mielessäni on Pyynikin harjun näköalapaikalla. Taivas on tehty pastellipiirroksena ja alaosa linopiirroksena kuten myös perhonen ja kuu.  Kuunsillalla kimaltelee kiillettä. Tämä on aika iso: 50 x 30 cm.

The laughing moon popped up now on the sky. There are five cats on a bench looking at the moon bridge. The bench is in my mind on the vantage point in the Pyynikki National Park. The sky was done as a pastel drawing and the bottom part is a linocut as are the butterfly and moon. Some glitter is gleaming on the moon bridge. This is quite big: 50 x 30 cm.

HOPEINEN KUU II / SILVERY MOON II

Tein  taas uuden hopeisen kuun Pispalan ylle. Entiseen tapaan alaosa, ukonkorento ja kuu ovat linopiirroksia. Tein kuulle ja korennolle sapluunat ennen kuin väritin taivaan pastelliväreillä, pääasiassa käytin uusia Pan Pastels-värejäni. Taivaanrannan punertavan sävyn ja tuulen mukana kulkevat pilvet näin matkalla kotiin työhuoneelta Pyhäjärven yllä. Kuu on vedostettu hopeavärillä ja siinä on hiukan kiillettä. Ukonkorento on painettu hopeavärillä ja väritetty pastellikynillä ja musteella, mutta se näytti silti aika vaalelta, joten vedostin korennosta mustalla vain  ääriviivat. Nyt korento erottuu taivasta vasten paremmin. työ on  aika iso: 50 x 30 cm.

I made again a new silvery moon over Pispala. Like before the bottom part, dragonfly and moon are linocuts. I made stencils for the moon and dragonfly before colouring the sky with pastel colours, mainly I used my new Pas Pastels. I saw the reddish colour of the skyline and the clouds moving along with the wind over the lake Pyhäjärvi when I was walking home from my work room. The moon was printed with silver colours and there is a bit of glitter. The dragonfly was printed with silver colour and coloured with pastel pens and ink, but still it seemed rather pale so I printed with black colour only the outlines of the dragonfly. Now the dragonfly is more visible against the sky. This work is quite large: 50 x 30 cm.

PICASSO-KISSA: 2 / PICASSO CAT II

Toinen Picasso-kissa putkahti linopiirrokseen Kissa joka uneksi olevansa Picasso. Kuvassa on sama punainen nojatuli kuin aiemmassakin Picasso-kissassa. Mutta tyyli on hiukan raskaampi ja värikkäämpi. No, yhtä hauska oli tehdä tätäkin versiota! Linopiirrospohjassa on tyhjä kangas maalaukselle, johon tein nyt tämän Picasson pääasiassa pastelliväreillä. Molempien Picasso-kissojen malleilla on käsissään kuusi sormea - eikö Picasso osannut laskea?

 An other Picasso Cat popped on my linocut of a Cat Who Dreamed She Was Picasso. There is the same red armchair than in the earlier version of Picasso Cat. But the style is now somewhat heavier and more colourful. Well, it was just as fun to make this one! On the linocut there is a blank canvas for a painting, and Picasso was made mainly with pastel colours. The models in both of these Picasso cats have six fingers in their hands - didn’t Picasso know how to count?

LIIKAAKO KISSOJA? / TOO MANY CATS?

Iittalan naivistisen taideaseman projektia veti Linnan Kehitys Oy:stä Pia Niemikotka. Projekti kesti pari vuotta, ja siihen osallistui huima parikymmentä eri tahoa: teknisiä asiantuntijoita, projektihenkilöitä, rahoittajia ja taiteilijoita. Pia onnistui kuin onnistuikin pitämään  kaikki narut käsissään ja projekti valmistui: Iittalan naivistinen taideasema avattiin juhlallisesti 9.6.2018. Tähän hankkeeseen liittyi omalla kohdallani salainen tilaustyö. Pian hyvä ystävä tilasi Pialle luovutettavaksi lino/pastellityön, jonka aiheena on Iittalan asemakatos ja paljon kissoja, nimenä piti olla Liikaako kissoja? Ehkä kaikkien maun mukaista ei ole naivistille niin yleisten kissojen ilmestyminen vähän joka puolelle. Sain idean yhdistää Iittalan asema-linoon  sinisen taivaan, jossa pilvien päällä leijuu pieniä linokissoja. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Kuva luovutettiinkin Pialle Iittalan aseman avajaisissa, ja yllätys oli varmaan melkoinen kun lahjoittajan henkilöllisyys hänelle selvisi. Tämä "salainen" projekti oli kyllä yksi mieleenpainuvimpia, tunteikkaampia ja jännittävimpiä, mitä olen kokenut. Pia postasi hellyttävän sydenkuviolla ympäröidyn valokuvan tästä työstä yhdessä hanelle Naivistit Iittalassa näyttelyn 30-vuotisavajaisissa jo aiemmin luovutetun Naivistit Iittalassa-linoni kanssa. Onneksi Pia tuntuu pitävän lahjoistaan - nyt vain pitää löytyä tilaa seinällä.

Pia Niemikotka from Linnan Kehitys Oy was leading the project of Iiittala Naïve Art Station. This was a two-year project, and it was participated about twenty different parties: technical experts, project managers, sponsors and artists. Pia managed to keep all the ropes in her hands, and the project succeeded: Iittala Naïve Art Station was ceremoniously opened 9th, June, 2918. For my part there was an additional project: a tailor-made and secret order. Pia´s dear friend ordered a lino/pastel work, which would be presented to Pia at the opening ceremony. The subject had to be Iiittala station, and there should be a lot of cats and the name of the work would be Too Many Cats? Perhaps it was not suitable for all tastes that the for Naïve artists so common  cats were emerging all around. I got an idea to combine the Iittala station linocut with a clear blue sky, some clouds and on them small lino cats. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The picture was presented to Pia at the opening ceremony, and it must have been quite a surprise when the identity of the donor was gradually revealed to Pia. This "secret" project was surely one of the most memorable, emotional and exciting that I have experienced. Pia posted a touching heart-shaped photo of this work together with my linocut which was presented to her already earlier at the opening of  the 30th Anniversary Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition. I´m so happy that Pia seems to like my linocut presents - now the only problem is to find space on the wall.
