Olipa mielenkiintoinen päivä olla mukana, kun MTV filmasi Naivistit IIttalass -näyttelyä ja Iittalan naivistista taideasemaa uutisiinsa. Naivistit Iittalassa-säätiöstä Ulla Heinonen kertoi näyttelyn 30-vuotisesta taipaleesta ja naivismista yleensäkin. Matti Laine ja minä paikalle osuneina taitelijoina esittelimme omia töitämme. Hauska oli seurata, miten nopeasti toimittaja- ja kuvaaja-pari teki työtään. Etenkin kuvaajan osa oli haasteellinen, hakea nopeasti sopivat kuvakulmat, kantaa aika painavaa kameraa ja joustaa koko ajan kuvattavien liikkeisiin - kuin tanssia! Materiaalia kertyi varmaan kokoillan elokuvan verran, joten haastetta tekijöillä riittää karsia aineistosta lyhyt uutinen. Asemalla ukkoskuurojen välissä aurinko paistoi ja Pitsiverhon takana -seinän kuva heijastui kauniisti taustalevylleen.
Suomen kesä jatkuu poikkeuksellisen kuumana. Päivät matelevat helteisinä. Itsekin nautin verkkaisesta kesäelämästä silloin tällöin kaivertelemalla linopiirroksia lempipaikallani kesämökin parvekkeella. Vedostuspuuhiin pääsee vasta, kun ilmat viilenevät eikä muste paakkuunnu kuumassa.

What an interesting day it was to be along when MTV (Finnish Commercial Television Channel) was filming Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition and Iittala Art Station for their news program. Ulla Heinonen from the Naïve Artists in Iittala Foundation told about the 30 years long history of the exhibition and about Naïve Art in general. Matti Laine and I were introducing our own works as artists who happened to be present. It was fun to follow, how fast the pair of a reporter and cameraman worked. Especially the part of the cameraman was challenging, to find quickly the right angles, carry the heavy camera, and follow all the time the movements of the talkers - like a dance! There was material surely for a whole movie, so it is really challenging to cut a short news clip. The sun was shining between thunder clouds at the station, and the shadow of Behind the Curtain picture was reflecting beautifully on its back panel. The Finnish summer is continuing exceptionally hot, the days are creeping along sweltering, and I´m enjoying the slow summer life just occasionally carving linocuts on my favorite spot on the balcony of our summer cottage. The printing is possible again, when the weather cools a bit and the ink is not getting so lumpy.

LIIKAAKO KISSOJA? / TOO MANY CATS?

Iittalan naivistisen taideaseman projektia veti Linnan Kehitys Oy:stä Pia Niemikotka. Projekti kesti pari vuotta, ja siihen osallistui huima parikymmentä eri tahoa: teknisiä asiantuntijoita, projektihenkilöitä, rahoittajia ja taiteilijoita. Pia onnistui kuin onnistuikin pitämään  kaikki narut käsissään ja projekti valmistui: Iittalan naivistinen taideasema avattiin juhlallisesti 9.6.2018. Tähän hankkeeseen liittyi omalla kohdallani salainen tilaustyö. Pian hyvä ystävä tilasi Pialle luovutettavaksi lino/pastellityön, jonka aiheena on Iittalan asemakatos ja paljon kissoja, nimenä piti olla Liikaako kissoja? Ehkä kaikkien maun mukaista ei ole naivistille niin yleisten kissojen ilmestyminen vähän joka puolelle. Sain idean yhdistää Iittalan asema-linoon  sinisen taivaan, jossa pilvien päällä leijuu pieniä linokissoja. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Kuva luovutettiinkin Pialle Iittalan aseman avajaisissa, ja yllätys oli varmaan melkoinen kun lahjoittajan henkilöllisyys hänelle selvisi. Tämä "salainen" projekti oli kyllä yksi mieleenpainuvimpia, tunteikkaampia ja jännittävimpiä, mitä olen kokenut. Pia postasi hellyttävän sydenkuviolla ympäröidyn valokuvan tästä työstä yhdessä hanelle Naivistit Iittalassa näyttelyn 30-vuotisavajaisissa jo aiemmin luovutetun Naivistit Iittalassa-linoni kanssa. Onneksi Pia tuntuu pitävän lahjoistaan - nyt vain pitää löytyä tilaa seinällä.

Pia Niemikotka from Linnan Kehitys Oy was leading the project of Iiittala Naïve Art Station. This was a two-year project, and it was participated about twenty different parties: technical experts, project managers, sponsors and artists. Pia managed to keep all the ropes in her hands, and the project succeeded: Iittala Naïve Art Station was ceremoniously opened 9th, June, 2918. For my part there was an additional project: a tailor-made and secret order. Pia´s dear friend ordered a lino/pastel work, which would be presented to Pia at the opening ceremony. The subject had to be Iiittala station, and there should be a lot of cats and the name of the work would be Too Many Cats? Perhaps it was not suitable for all tastes that the for Naïve artists so common  cats were emerging all around. I got an idea to combine the Iittala station linocut with a clear blue sky, some clouds and on them small lino cats. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The picture was presented to Pia at the opening ceremony, and it must have been quite a surprise when the identity of the donor was gradually revealed to Pia. This "secret" project was surely one of the most memorable, emotional and exciting that I have experienced. Pia posted a touching heart-shaped photo of this work together with my linocut which was presented to her already earlier at the opening of  the 30th Anniversary Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition. I´m so happy that Pia seems to like my linocut presents - now the only problem is to find space on the wall.

LINOPIIRROS IITTALAN ASEMASTA / LINOCUT OF IITTALA STATION

Iittalan naivistinen taideasema avattiin 9.6.2018. Asemakatoksen kahdella seinällä on kahdesta linopiirroksestani kuvat rei´itettyinä metallilevyinä. Tietenkin aiheesta syntyi idea tehdä linopiirros, jota voisi käyttää alaosana isompiin töihin, joihin voisi yhdistää taivasta tai pilviä pastellipiirroksina. Teinkin 20 x 30 cm kokoisen linon asemakatoksesta ja junasta. Asemalla odottaa junaa monenlaisia hahmoja: kukkahattutäti, Nalle Puh, Nasu, Muumi, Pikku Myy, monenlaisia laukkuja ja junanlähettäjä. Linopiirros luovutettiin aseman avajaisissa hankkeessa mukana olleelle VR:n edustajalle Arja Aallolle. Ehkä tämä taideraseman prototyyppi saisi seuraajia muillakin paikkakunnilla kuin Iittalassa.

Iiittala`s Naïve Railway Station was opened on 9th of June, 2018. The punctured metal sheets of two of my linocuts are on two walls of the train shelter. Of course there came an idea to make a linocut of this subject, a picture I could use as a lower part of larger works perhaps with some sky and clouds above as pastel drawing. So I made a linocut of the train station, sized 20 x 30 cm. There are several characters waiting for the train on the landing: a flower hat ant, Winnie The Pooh, Piglet, Moomin, Little My, many bags, and a train dispatcher. The linocut was presenter at the opening ceremony to Arja Aalto, the representative of VR (State Railways) in the project. Perhaps this prototype of an art station could get followers on some other localities.

IITTALAN NAIVISTINEN TAIDEASEMA AVATTU / NAÏVE ART STATION IN IITTALA IS OPEN

Iittalan naivistisen taideaseman avajaisia juhlittiin eilen. Asemakatos oli huputettu ja se paljastettiin juhlavasti. Puheita riitti, paljon ihmisiä, soppaa ja lättyjä, hieno tunnelma. Kissat kahdesta linopiirroksestani koristavat asemakatoksen seiniä. Pitkällä sivustalla on Hanuristin vapaapäivä ja pienemmällä seinällä Pitsiverhon takana. Asemakatoksen suunnittelu alkoi yli vuosi sitten, ja toteutuksessa on ollut mukana tosi monta tahoa: katoksen teknisen rakenteen asiantuntijoita, ympäristösuunnittelijoita, projektihenkilöitä ja rahoitukseen osallistuneita. Nämä työni katokseen valittiin yhdessä Naivistit Iittalassa -säätiön kanssa, lähinnä Ulla Heinosen ja Hannu Castrénin asiantuntemuksella. Koko projektia veti Linnan Kehitys Oy:stä Pia Niemikotka. Katoksen taidekuvien toteutus oli haastava: kuvat rei´itettiin esiruostutetulle COR-TEN-teräslevylle. Tästä osasta vastasi SSAB:n tytäryhtiö Ruukki. Isoa osaa tekniikan tai rahoituksen asiantuntijoista en projektin aikana tavannut, mutta viestejä vaihdettiin kuvien mittasuhteista ja taustakuvioinneista, kun seinälevyjen mitat muuttuivat tai keskusteltiin kuvien rei´ityksestä negatiiveina tai positiiveina sekä reikien koosta. Loppuvaiheessa kuvien taakse asennettiin

vaaleat levyt ja loisteputket. Valot syttyvät ja valaisevat kuvat takaa, mikä varmaan onkin  näiden kuvien paras olomuoto. Nyt Suomen kirkkaimpana yöttömänä kesäaikana kuvat eivät erotu kovin selkeinä. Odotankin siis malttamatomana pimeneviä öitä, jolloin voisin nähdä asemakatoksen valaistuna. Toiveeni on, että aseman kautta työhön aamuisin lähtevät ja töistä kotiin illalla palaavat iittalalaiset näkisivät ja kokisivat nämä naivistiset kotoisat, rauhalliset kissat erilaisissa valaistuksissa ja tunnelmissa.

The opening ceremony of the Naïve Art Station of Iittala was held yesterday. The train shelter was hooded and it was ceremoniously uncovered. There were a lot of speeches, a hundred people, soup and pancakes, a great atmosphere. The cats of two of linocuts are decorating the walls of the train shelter. On the longer wall there is Accordionist´s Day Off and on the smaller wall Behind the Lace Curtain. The planning of this train shelter begun about a year ago, and there has been a lot of different specialists and experts operating in this project: technical experts of the construction, environmental specialists, projects planners and sponsors. My linocuts were selected together with Naïve Artists in Iittala Foundation, mainly with the expertise of Ulla Heinonen and Hannu Castrén. Pia Niemikotka from Linnan Kehitys Oy was in charge of the whole project. The implementation of the walls was really challenging. the pictures were punctured on  the pre-rusted COR-TEN steel sheets. This part was the responsibility of SSAB´s subsidiary Ruukki. I met just a few of technical experts of sponsors during the project, but messages were sent regarding the scale and background pattern s when the sizes of the metal panels changed or there were discussions about the pictures as negatives or positives, and also about the size of the holes. At the final stage

white sheets were installed behind the metal sheets and also fluorescent lights. These light will turn on and illuminate the pictures from behind, and this is definitely the best state of the pictures. Now during the nightless nights and the brightest time in Finland the punctured pictures are not perhaps at their best. So I´m waiting already darker nights, when I could see the train shelter illuminated. My wish is that the inhabitants of Iittala going to work by train in the morning and returning home in the evening would experience these Naïve, homely, peaceful cats in many different lights and feelings.

IITTALAN TAIDEASEMA / IITTALA ART STATION

Iittalaan on meneillään kesäksi 2018 mielenkiintoinen hanke: naivistinen taideasema. Nykyisen junaseisakkeen tienoille on tulossa puisto ja monenlaista taidetta Naivistit Iittalassa-näyttelyn taiteilijoilta, muraaleja ja veistoksia. Itse olen mukana asemaseisakkeen taidekatos-hankkeessa. Asemakatoksen kahdelle seinälle on tulossa suuret linopiirrokseni pisin seinä on noin 6 metriä leveä). Tekninen toteutus on tosi haastava: reitetty metallilevy, joka vielä valaistaan takaa. Hankkeen moottorina toimii hämeenlinnalainen Linnan Kehitys Oy ja taiteilijat on valinnut Naivistit Iittalassa -säätiö. Taideaseman avajaispäiväkin on jo päättetty: lauantai 9.6.2018.

There is under way an interesting project in Iittala for the summer 2018: Naïve Art Station. In the vicinity of the present train stop there will be a park and various art of the artists in Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition: sculpture and murals. I am involved in the art station shelter project. There will my large linocuts on two walls of the train shelter (the with of the largest wall is about 6 metres). The technical implementation is really challenging: a punctured metal plate, which in addition will be lighted from behind. The motor of this project is Linnan Kehitys Oy from Hämeenlinna, and the artists have been chosen by Naïve Artists in Iittala foundation. Even the opening day of the Art Station has been decided: Saturday June 9.
