HYMYNAAMAT / SMILING FACES

 

Tein kaksi pientälinopiirrosta (vain 3 cm halkaisijaltaan), joissa on hymyilevä naama. Aion käyttää näitä isompien aurinkolinopiirrosten keskellä sekä joulukortissa tähtien naamoina. Kokeillaan ensin joulukorttia.

I made two small linocuts (only 3 cm in diameter) with a smiling face. I'm going to use these in the middle of larger sun linocuts and in a Christmas card as star faces. Let's try first a Christmas card.

SEITSEMÄN PERHOSKISSAA / SEVEN BUTTERFLY CATS

Kesän aikana kesämökillä syntyivät nämä seitsemän sekatekniikkatyötä, joissa kaikissa lentelee perhoskissoja tai enkelikissoja. Kissat ovat linopiirroksia. Samoin linopiirroksia ovat kuut ja aurinko, kuumailmapallo sekä kuvien alareunan maisemat, kissat, usein Pispalaa, Pyhäjärveä tai Pyynikkiä. Taivaat ja pilvet tein pehmeillä pastelliväreillä. Kaikkien pienempien (50 x 30 cm) töiden innoittajana oli Lauri Viidan runo Alfhild Pispalasta ja hänen äidistään. Enkä nyt ole yhtään varma, vaikka tämä sarja vielä jatkuisi. Näitä linopalasia on niin hauska yhdistellä uuteen kokonaisuuteen ja lisätä ihan eri näköinen taivas.

 During the summer, these seven mixed media works were created at the summer cottage, all of which have butterfly cats or angel cats flying around. The cats are linocuts. Similarly, linocuts are also the moon and the sun, hot air balloon as well as the landscapes at the bottom of the pictures, cats, often Pispala, Pyhäjärvi or Pyynikki. I made the skies and clouds with soft pastel colors. All the smaller works (50 x 30 cm) were inspired by Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild about Pispala and his mother. And now I'm not at all sure, even if this series will continue. These lino pieces are so fun to combine into a new whole picture and add a completely different looking sky.

Neljä lentävää kissaa pääsi vielä tähän Lauri Viidan Alfhild-runon  innoittamaan sekatekniikkatyöhön. Tämä on isohko: 70 x 40 cm. Keltainen kuu ja osaksi väritetyt kissat ovat linopiirroksia. samoin kuin alaosan maisema Pispalasta portaineen ja puutaloineen. Aika dramaattinen pastellitaivas, vai mitä? Ja mielessä runon säe: "Ettemme loukkaisi Pispalan kivissä jalkaamme kukaan".

Four flying cats made it to this mixed media work inspired by Lauri Viita's Alfhild poem. This is large: 70 x 40 cm. The yellow moon and partially colored cats are linocuts. as well as the landscape of the lower part of Pispala with its stairs and wooden houses. Pretty dramatic pastel sky, huh? And the verse of the poem in mind: "So That No One Would Hurt Their Feet In the Stones of Pispala".

Neljä kissaa istuu punaisella samettisohvalla aika pimeässä. Katosta roikkuu kyllä pelkkä lamppu, mutta siinä ei taida olla edes sähköä. Kissat saattavat olla sohvalla takan loisteessa, sillä kuvan sävyt ovat hyvin pehmeän punertavat. Tai sitten kissat katsovat piirrettyjä filmejä televisiosta. Matto sohvan edessä on kuin karkki. Kuvan on maalannut Rauni Koivisto vuonna 2017, ennen kuin hän alkoi käyttää taiteilijanimeä Kåira (s. 1959), tuttu ainakin Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyistä. Taulun nimi on Sohvanvaltaajat.

Four cats are sitting on a red velvet sofa in the dark. There is just a lamp hanging from the ceiling, but it doesn't even seem to have electricity. The cats might be on the sofa in the glow of the fireplace, because the tones of the picture are very soft reddish. Or cats watch cartoons on TV. The carpet in front of the sofa is like candy. The picture was painted by Rauni Koivisto in 2017, before he started using the artist name Kåira (b. 1959), familiar at least from the Naivistit Iittala exhibitions. The name of the board is Sohvanvaltaajat/ Gogglebox.

NELJÄ PERHOSKISSAA / FOUR BUTTERFLY CATS

 

Kaikki neljä uutta perhoskissaani lentävät tämän isomman kokoisen, 70 x 40 cm) sekatekniikkatyön taivaalle. Tein sapluunat linopiirroksille perhoskissosita ja jätin niiden avulla pastellitaivaalle vaaleat paikat vedostamista varten. Keltainen kuu samoin kuin alaosan Pispala-näkymä ovat linopiirroksia.

All four of my new butterfly cats fly into the sky of this larger (70 x 40 cm) mixed media work. I made the stencils for the linocuts of butterfly cats and used them to leave light spots in the pastel sky for printing. The yellow moon as well as the Pispala view in the lower part are linocuts.

ON IHANA ELÄÄ / IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

 

Tämä on viides 50 x 30 cm kokoisten sekatekniikkatöiden sarjaa. Perhoskissan siivet saivat vielä väriä ja pastellitaivaalle lehahti parvi pieniä linopiirroslintuja. Tämäkin kuva sai innoituksen ja nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild: "Oi kuinka on ihana elää". Saattaapa olla, ettei tämä olekaan viimeinen tätä sarjaa kuten kuvittelin. Näissä viidessä työssä on kaikissa linopiirroskuu, mutta nyt syntyikin idea tehdä vielä yksi työ, jossa onkin aurinko.

This is the fifth in a series of 50 x 30 cm sized mixed media works. The butterfly cat's wings got some more color and a flock of small linocut birds fluttered in the pastel sky. This picture also got its inspiration and name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild: "Oh How Wonderful It Is To Live". It may be that this is not the last of this series as I imagined. These five works all have a linocut moon, but now the idea arose to make one more work with the sun.

KELTAINEN TAIVAS / YELLOW SKY

 Viides Alfhild-runon innoittama työ 50 x 30 cm kokoisien sekatekniikkatöiden sarjaan on aluillaan. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pyhäjärvestä soutajineen. Kuu ja perhoskissa ovat myös linopiirroksia, ja lisää pieniä linolintuja on tulossa taivaalle. Keltainen  taivas on pastellia.

The fifth work inspired by the Alfhild poem in the series of 50 x 30 cm mixed media works is about to begin. In the lower part there is a linocut of Lake Pyhäjärvi with a rower. The moon and butterfly cat are also linocuts, and more little linobirds are coming to the sky. The yellow sky is pastel.

AKVARELLEJA LAIKUSSA / WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS AT LAIKKU

 

Eurooppalaisen akvarellimaalarien yhdistyksen ECWS juhlanäyttely on Tampereella Laikussa, enää 25.8.2024 asti. Tosi paljon töitä, suurin osa perinteistä maisemaa ja luontoa. Akvarellitekniikan näistä näkee hienosti. Ei ihan helppoa tuo märällä märän päälle taiteilu. Itse hain enemmän tarinoita ja yllätyksiä ja olihan siellä tuttujakin: Raxu Helminen ja pöllöt, abstraktimpi syvällinen Sirkkaliisa Virtanen ja yhdessä työssä Pispalan Hirvikatukin. Kameraan taisi tarttua eniten Etelä-Euroopan tekijöiden vesivärejä, hurmaavia ja välillä oli ihan vaikea ajatella, että työ on vesiväri eikä valokuva.

The ECWS jubilee exhibition of the European Association of Watercolor Painters is in Laikku, Tampere, only until August 25, 2024. A lot of work, most of it traditional landscape and nature. You can see the watercolor technique very well in these. It's not easy to make art with wet on wet. I myself was looking for more stories and surprises, and there were familiar ones there too: Raxu Helminen and the owls, the more abstract and profound Sirkkaliisa Virtanen and, in one work, even Hirvikatu in Pispala. The water colors of Southern European artists seemed to stick to the camera the most, charming, and sometimes it was hard to think that the work is a water color and not a photograph

 Neljäs 50 x 30 cm kokoinen sekatekniikkatyö sai myös nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild: "Ja sitten kun Pispala aamun saa..."Perhoskissan siivetkin saivat punaista väriä. Ja pastellitaivas on aika hurja sinisen kuun alla. Mkillainenkohan päivä tästä on oikein tulossa Pispalaan?

Kaksi kissanpoikaa leikkii polulla ehkä kävyllä. Tunnen Marja Pirilän (s. 1957), kuvan ottajan, ja arvioisinkin, että tämä kuva on hänen varhaiskaudeltaan. Kuvan perusteella aikaa on äkkiseltään vaikea arvioida, sillä tuo puuaita ja portti näyttävät tosi vanhoilta. Mutta taustalla pilkistää valkoinen keinunrunko ja talon kulma, jossa on aika iso ikkuna. Marja Pirilä erikoistui myöhemmin neulanreikatekniikkaan eli camera obscuraan. Tässä mustavalkolisessa perinteisessa valokuvassa on selvää ideaa, avoin portti maailmaan pienille kissoille.

Two kittens are playing on the path, maybe with a pine cone. I know Marja Pirilä (b. 1957), who took the picture, and I would estimate that this picture is from her early years as a photographer. Based on the picture, it is suddenly difficult to judge the time, because that wooden fence and the gate look really old. But in the background, a white swing frame and a corner of the house with a rather large window peek out. Marja Pirilä later specialized in pinhole technology, i.e. camera obscura. This black and white traditional photo has a clear idea, an open gate to the world for little cats.
 

PUNAISTA TAIVASTA / RED SKY

 Pispalan harjun  taloja alaosassa, sinertävä kuu taivaalla ja perhoskissa liihottelemassa. Nämä ovat linopiirroksia. aion vielä lisätä taivaalle kaksi pienempää linopiirrosta perhosista. Mutta ohjeeni mukaan, taivaalle tulee punainen rusko, ja sen teen pastelliväreillä. Tämä sekatekniikkatyö on neljäs 50 x 30 cm kokoista sarjaani.

Houses on the Pispala ridge at the bottom, a bluish moon in the sky and butterfy cat fluttering. These are linocuts. I'm going to add two smaller linocuts of butterflies to the sky. But according to my instructions, the sky will be reddish glow, and I will do it with pastel colors. This mixed media work is the fourth in my 50 x 30 cm sized series.

KOHOTA UNESSA PILVIEN ALTA... / RISE IN A DREAM FROM BENEATH THE CLOUDS...

 

Kolmaskin sekatekniikkatyö sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild: "Kohota unessa pilvien alta ja katsella korkeammalta". Perhoskissa ja kuumailmapallo ovat käsin väriettyjä linopiirroksia. Myös alaosan ,kissat piknikillä ja taivalla liitelevät pienet linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Taivaan ja pilvet tein pehmeällä pastellilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

Butterfly cat and hot air balloon are hand-colored linocuts. The cats on a picnic  in the lower part and the small birds flying in the sky are also linocuts. I made the sky and clouds with soft pastels. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

KUUMAILMAPALLO / HOT AIR BALLOON

 

Kolmas sarjassa 50 x 30 cm kokoisia sekatekniikkatöitä on kuva, jossa on väritetty kuumailmapallo. Perhoskissan siivistä puuttuu vielä väritys. Ja taivas tulee olemaan sinistä pastellia kuten muotiinpanoni neuvoo:"kesätaivas, vaalea sininen". Alaosassa on linopiirros seitsemästä kissasta piknikillä Pyynikin näkötornin ylätasanteella. Muutama pieni lintustamppi vielä on tulossa.

The third in a series of 50 x 30 cm mixed media works is a picture with a colored hot air balloon. The butterfly cat's wings are still missing coloring. And the sky will be pastel blue as my fashion input advises: "summer sky, light blue". In the lower part, there is a linocut of seven cats having a picnic on the upper platform of Pyynikki's observation tower. A couple of small bird stamps are still coming.

SIELLÄ HE KULKEVAT / THERE THEY ARE WALKING

 

Kissa soittaa viulua nauravalle kuulle. Linnut lentelevät kuun ympäri. Alla on Pispala ja kolme kissaa Pispalan portailla. Tämä sekatekniikkatyö on toinen sarjassani 50 x 30 cm kokoisia pastellitaivaita. Vain pilvet ja aika harmaa taivas ovat pastellia, kissa, kuu, linnut ja alaosa ovat linopiirroksia. Tämän sarjan työt saavat nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild. Tämän nimeksi tuli " Siellä he kulkevat tähtien rivissä kirkasta vanaa".

The cat plays the violin to the laughing moon. Birds fly around the moon. Below is Pispala and three cats on Pispala steps. This mixed media work is the second in my series of 50 x 30 cm pastel skies. Only the clouds and the rather gray sky are pastels, the cat, the moon, the birds and the lower part are linocuts. The works in this series get their name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild. This is called "There they walk in a row of stars in a bright stream".

Mustavalkoinen kissa makaa pyöreällä pöydällä valkoisen pöytäliinan päällä. Pöydällä on myös kolme jättikokoista kirsikkaa. Saksalaisen Almut Gernhardtin (1940-1989) maalaus on kaunis, harmoninen, harmaata, valkoista ja piristeenä punaista. Tämä kuva on lastenkirjasta "Mit dir sind wir vier" (Sinun kanssasi meitä on neljä). Tekstin kirjaan teki veli Robert Gernhardt (1937-2006). Kirja ilmestyi vuonna 1976.

A black and white cat lies on a round table on a white tablecloth. There is also four giant cherries on the table. The painting by the German Almut Gernhardt (1940-1989) is beautiful, harmonious, gray, white and red as a stimulant. This picture is from the children's book "Mit dir sind wir vier" (There are four of us with you). The text for the book was written by brother Robert Gernhardt (1937-2006). The book was published in 1976.

NAURAVA KUU / LAUGHING MOON

 

Taivaalla on naurava kuu (linopiirros) ja viulua soittava kissa (myös linopiirros). Alaosan linopiirroksessa kolme kissaa makoilevat Pispalan portaissa. Tämä tuleva sekatekniikkatyö on toinen sarjassa lentäviä kissoja. Aikomukseni on lisätä taivaalle pastelliväri kuten tässä ohjetekstissäni lukee: "Harmaita pilviä". sekä joukko pieniä linopiirrroslintuja. Koko on tämän sarjan töissä 50 x 30 cm.

There is a laughing moon in the sky (linocut) and a cat playing the violin (also linocut). In the linocut in the lower part, three cats are lounging on Pispala's stairs. This upcoming mixed media work is the second in a series of flying cats. My intention is to add a pastel color to the sky as it says in my instruction text: "Grey clouds". and a bunch of little linocut birds. The size of the works in this series is 50 x 30 cm.

SIELTÄ HE KATSOVAT... / FROM THERE THEY LOOK AT THE HILL...

 

Tämä sekatekniikkatyö sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta Alfhild : "Sieltä he katsovat kotoista mäkeä, kissoja koiria, tuttua väkeä". Enkelikissa (linopiirros) siellä lentelee oranssin kuun vieressä seuranaan parvi lintuja (linopiirroksia nekin kuten kuu). Alaosan linopiirroksessa viisi kissaa istuu penkillä Pyynikin rinteessä. Taivas on pastellipiirros. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm ja se on ensimmäinen sarjaani tämän kokoisia sekatekniikkatöitä.

This mixed media work got its name from Lauri Viita's poem Alfhild: "From there they look at the hill, cats, dogs, familiar people". An angel cat (linocut) is flying next to the orange moon, accompanied by a flock of birds (linocuts, like the moon). In the linocut at the bottom, five cats are sitting on a bench on the slope of Pyynikki ridge. The sky is a pastel drawing. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm and it is my first one in the series of mixed media works of this size.

ENKELIKISSA JA KUU / ANGEL CAT & MOON

 

Aloitin uutta pienempää sarjaa linopiirroksia ja pastellitaivaita. Tästä alkaa kuva enkelikissasta, kuusta ja kissoista penkillä. Nämä ovat kaikki linopiirroksia, seuraavaksi sitten pastellia taivaalle.  Tämän sarjan koko töiden koko tulee olemaan 50 x 30 cm ja yritän saada niihin kaikki uudesta viidestä linopiirrroskissasta, joilla on siivet. Nyt lennetään!

I started a new, smaller series of linocuts and pastel skies. Here begins a picture of an angel cat, the moon and cats on a bench. These are all linocuts, next pastels for the sky. The size of all the works in this series will be 50 x 30 cm and I will try to get all of the new five linocut cats with wings in them. Now let's fly!

AAMU TULVII KOILLISESTA / MORNING FLOODS FROM THE NORTHEAST

 

Kahden perhoskissan siivet saivat väriä, oranssia ja punaista. Samoja värejä on taivaalla helottavassa auringossa. Alaosan kaksi kissaa puussa, kissat taivaalla ja kuu ovat linopiirroksia. Sadetta ennustava taivas on pastellipiirros. Tämä sekatekniikkatyö on aika iso 50 x 60 cm. Ja oliko sitä kiva tehdä, no oli!

Nimen löysin Juicen kappaleesta Graniitti hikoilee:" Aamu tulvii koillisesta, jälleen valon nähdä saan."

The wings of the two butterfly cats were colored orange and red. The same colors are in the sky in the warm sun. In the lower part, the two cats in the tree, the cats in the sky and the moon are linocuts. The sky predicting rain is a pastel drawing. This mixed media work is quite large, 50 x 60 cm. And was it nice to do it, well it was!

I found the name in Juice's song Granite sweats: "Morning Floods From the Northeast, I Can See the Light Again."

Tämän kissakortin tärkein elementti on sininen kiinalainen posliinimalja. Astian sininen väri on juuri oikea sävy kiinalaiseen koristeluun, ja koristeiden muodot ja aiheet ovat aidon näköiset. Kaksi söpöä kissanpoikaa ovat aika tavanomaisiaa viktoriaanisia kissoja. Pöytäliinakin on mielenkiintoisesti maalattu, kauniit, murretut värit tuovat siniselle maljalle vastakohtaa. Taiteilija on englantilainen Bessie Barker.

The most important element of this cat card is the blue Chinese porcelain bowl. The blue color of the dish is just the right shade for Chinese decoration, and the shapes and motifs of the decorations look authentic. The two cute kittens are pretty standard Victorian cats. The tablecloth is also interestingly painted, the beautiful, broken colors contrast the blue bowl. The artist is Bessie Barker from England.

PERHOSKISSAT TAIVAALLE / BUTTERFLY CATS TO THE SKY

 Lisäsin tummalle taivaalle neljä lentävää kissaa. Kolmella kissalla on siivet, ja kahden siivet kaipaavat vielä väriä.

PILVET VYÖRYVÄT / CLOUDS ARE ROLLING

 Aika dramaattinen ja osaksi tumma pastellitaivas tuli lentävien kissojen taustaksi. Linopiirroksille kissoista olen jättänyt vaaleampia paikkoja, kuin pilviä. Tumma pilvenreuna vyöryy puussa kiipeileviä kissoja kohti.

A rather dramatic and partly dark pastel sky became the background of the flying cats. For linocuts of cats I have left lighter places rather like clouds. The dark edge of the cloud rolls towards the cats climbing the tree.

HYMYÄ VILLA ARMAASSA / SMILING AT VILLA ARMAS

 

Taas riittää kortteja Villa Armaassa, ja yllärinä myynnissä on nyt pikatatuointejakin 1 euroa kpl. Auli Tikkalan kanssa oli hymy herkässä kun eteisessä oleva isohko lino/pastelli oli myyty. Galleria Villa Armas on todella kaunis näyttelypaikka Kangasalan Pikonlinnassa. Rakennus on entinen lääkärin asunto 1920-luvulta ja huoneet ovat ihanan korkeita ja avaria. Naivistinen yhteisnäyttely on auki syyskuun alkuun asti.

There are enough cards again in Villa Armas, and as a surprise, there are now also instant tattoos for 1 euro each. Auli Tikkala and I had a smile on our faces when the large lino/pastel in the hall was sold. Galleria Villa Armas is a really beautiful exhibition space in Pikonlinna, Kangasala. The building is a former doctor's apartment from the 1920s and the rooms are wonderfully tall and spacious. The Naive art joint exhibition is open until the beginning of September.
