Tässäpä on hempeä muunnelma tutusta kissa-asetelmasta, joka oikeastaan lainaa elementtejä resessanssiajasta ja Mona Lisasta. Taustalla on paksun punaisen samettiverhon takana utuinen kumpuileva maisema peltoineen, puineen ja kukkineen. Kissalla on vaaleanpunainen silkkirusetti kaulassaan, ja muutenkin kissa näyttää ihan vaaleanpunaiselta ja untuvanpehmeältä. Keltaiset silmät on maalattu vinoiksi ja kissan ilme on  hiukan nyrpeä, suupielet roikkuvat. Maalauksen nimi on "Le Chat Blanc / Valkoinen kissa" ja tekijäksi mainitaan Z. Szalowska.

Here is a cute variation of the familiar cat arrangement, which actually borrows elements from the Renaissance period and Mona Lisa. In the background behind a thick red velvet curtain is a misty rolling landscape with fields, trees and flowers. The cat has a pink silk bow around its neck, and otherwise the cat looks very pink and fluffy. The yellow eyes are painted oval shaped and the cat's expression is a bit grumpy, the corners of the mouth hang down. The name of the painting is "Le Chat Blanc / The White Cat" and the artist is mentioned as Z. Szalowska.

IITTALAN KESÄ OHI / IITTALA´S SUMMER IS OVER

 Haettiin pois myymättömät tavarat, taulut, kortit ja pyyhkeet kesän 2023 naivisminäyttelyn päätyttä Iittalassa. Onneksi tavaraa oli enää vähän takaisin tuotavaksi. Talo oli silti vielä täynnä vilinää kun taidetta ostaneet hakivat ostoksiaan pois, lähes 500 työtä oli näyttelystä kaikkiaan myyty ja paljon enemmän vielä heti mukaan aulashopista. Omista töistäkin vielä kolme odotti seinän vieressä pääsyään uusiin koteihinsa. Koko kesän näyttelyn pyörittämisessä töitä paiskineet Kira Suomalainen, Sanni Halanvaara ja Mia Mäkelä saavat ehkä pienen hengähdystauon ennen syksyn ja talven näyttelyitä vanhassa puukoulussa. Naivismin talvi-näyttely aukeaa marraskuussa ja mukana on erikoisnäyttely Enni Idin töitä. Kiitos, että sain olla mukana tämän  kesän naivistisessa näyttelyssä "Elämä edessä".  Pari kuvaa tarttui vielä kännykkään aulashopin seinltä.

We brought home unsold goods, paintings, cards and tea towels from the end of the summer 2023 naive exhibition in Iittala. Fortunately, there was just a little stuff left to bring back. The house was still full of buzz when those who bought art picked up their purchases, almost 500 works had been sold from the exhibition and many more were immediately taken from the lobby shop. Three of my own works were still waiting next to the wall to be taken their new homes. Kira Suomalainen, Sanni Halanvaara and Mia Mäkelä, who worked all summer in running the exhibition, will perhaps get a little breather before the autumn and winter exhibitions in the old wooden school. Naivism's winter exhibition opens in November and includes a special exhibition of Enni Id's work. Thank you for letting me to participate in this summer´s naive exhibition "Life Ahead". A couple of pictures were still taken by the mobile phone from the wall of the lobby shop.

SLÀMA PRESS

Uusin työkaluni on Sláma Pressin pieni pyöreä tela. Pyörivä alusta on vain  7 cm leveä ja siinä on kolmisenkymmentä pientä pyörivää kuulaa. Pyöreällä kahvalla saa telaan hyvän painon  ja sitä voi liikttaa linopiirroksen päällä pyörivin liikkein. Tämä on aivan erinomainen työväline vedostaessani pieniä perhosia, lintuja ja muita erillisiä ns. linoleimasimia. Ja tulos on tarkka ja hyvä. Ja mukana tulee myös kätevä puinen teline säilytysta varten. Suosittelen!

My newest tool is a small round roller from Sláma Press. The rotating base is only 7 cm wide and has thirty small rotating balls. The round handle gives the roller a good weight and it can be moved over the linocut with rotating movements. This is an absolutely excellent tool when printing small butterflies, birds and other separate so-called lino stamps. And the result is accurate and good. And it also comes with a handy wooden stand for storage. I recommend!

PÄÄSEN LÄHEMMÄKSI ELÄMÄÄ / I GET CLOSER TO LIFE

 

Perhoset pinkin kuun ympärillä saivat hiukan väriä siipiinsä. Perhoset, samoin kuin kuu ovat erillisiä linopiirroksia. Alhaalla oleva kuva Pispalan sotkuisesta pihasta ja portaista on myös linopiirros. Taivas on pehmeää pastellia. Tämä sekatekniikatyö kuuluu sarjaani isompia taivaskuvia, 70 x 40 cm. Pilvet eivät tunnu koskaan menettävän voimaansa, aina ne vaan inspiroivat, aina olisi jotain voinut tehdä vielä eri lailla. No, seuraavaan kertaan! Tämä työ sai nimensä Juicen kappaleesta Pyhä toimitus: "Pääsen lähemmäksi elämää".

The butterflies around the pink moon got a little color in their wings. The butterflies, as well as the moon, are separate linocuts. The picture below of Pispala's messy yard and stairs is also a linocut. The sky is a soft pastel. This mixed media work belongs to my series of larger sky pictures, 70 x 40 cm. The clouds never seem to lose their power, they always inspire, something could always have been done differently. Well, until next time! This picture got its name after Juice´s song Holy Ceremony: "I Get Closer To Life".

KESÄN PÄÄTTÄJÄISET IITTALASSA / END OF SUMMER IN IITTALA

 Iittalan naivistinen kesänäyttely päättyi sunnuntaina 27.8.2023, ja näyttelyssä riitti vilinää ihan viime minuuteille asti ja sen jälkeenkin  kun kiireisimmät näyttelystä töitä ostaneet alkoivat hakea ostoksiaan pois. Töitä oli myyty melkein 500 ja kävijöitä kesän aikan oli yli 21.000. Menestys siis! Ja näyttely sai paljon  kehuja kävijöiltä. Iso kiitos kuuluu kuraattori Veikko Halmetojalle ja käyttännön  sujumisesta vastanneille Ulla Heinoselle ja muille aulashopissa ja opastuksessa häärineille. Me tyytyväiset taiteilijat lopettelimme kesää paikallisessa ravintolassa illallsella, ja hyvässä seurassa. Petra Heikkilän kanssa matkasimme takaisin kotiin Tampereelle mukana Petran vähäiset myymättömät työt. Itse haen omat myymättömät työni myöhemmin kunhan kaikki kortit, pyyhkeet ja aulashopin tavarat on inventoitu. Suvi Vasaman veistos Muutos kuvastaa jotenkin  tätä hetkeä, vuodenaika vaihtuu,kesänäyttely päättyy, uudet kujeet mielessä.

Iittala's naive summer exhibition ended on Sunday, August 27, 2023, and there was enough buzz in the exhibition until the very last minutes and even after the closing time the busiest people who bought works from the exhibition started to pick up their purchases. Almost 500 works had been sold and there were more than 21,000 visitors during the summer. Success! And the exhibition received a lot of praise from visitors. A big thank you goes to the curator Veikko Halmetojja and to Ulla Heinonen, who was responsible for the smooth operation of the service, and to the other ones working in the lobby shop and guidance. We satisfied artists ended the summer at a local restaurant with dinner, and in good company. Petra Heikkilä and I traveled back home to Tampere with Petra's few unsold works. I myself will apply for my unsold works later, once all the cards, towels and lobby shop items have been inventoried. Suvi Vasama's sculpture Change somehow reflects this moment, the season changes, the summer exhibition ends, with new trends in mind.

Muffinilla on hypnoottinen katse Linda Cooperin maalauksessa. Raidat, pilkut ja viikset kissan kasvoissa on taitavasti maalattu. Valkoiset ja mustat alueet silmien ympärillä korostuvat. Murretut värit taustan tyynyllä ihastuttavat. Miten tästä tuleekaan mieleen Lucien Freudin maalaus tytöstä ja kissasta.

Muffin has a hypnotic gaze in Linda Cooper's painting. The stripes, spots and whiskers on the cat's face are skillfully painted. The white and black areas around the eyes are accentuated. The broken colors on the background pillow are delightful. How this reminds me of Lucian Freud's painting of a girl and a cat.

PERHOSTEN TANSSI KUUN YMPÄRILLÄ / BUTTERFLIES DANCING AROUND THE MOON

Pastellitaivasta tehdessä jätin sapluunoiden avulla linopiirrosperhosten vedostusta varten tyhjät paikat. Sitten vedostin nuo perhoset, oikeastaan linoleimasimet tyhjille paikoille. Nyt perhoset kaipaavat vielä väriä siipiinsä, ja sen teen käsin.

When making the pastel sky, I used the templates to fill out the empty spaces for printing the linocut butterflies. Then I printed those butterflies, actually lino stamps on the empty places. Now the butterflies still need color on their wings, and I do that by hand.

YMPYRÖITÄ / RINGS

 Pyöreä linopiirros vaaleanpunaisesta kuusta Pispalan piha-linopiirroksen yllä houkutteli tekemään pastellitaivaankin värit ympyrään kuun ympärille - vaaleaa kuun ympärillä ja tummaa taivaanrannassa. Nyt asettelen linopiirroksia perhosista myös ympyrään kuun ympärille.

The round pink linocut of the pink moon above Pispala's yard linocut tempted me to make even the colors of the pastel sky in a circle around the moon - light around the moon and dark in the horizon. Now I also arrange linocuts of butterflies in a circle around the moon.

MUSEOITU! / MUSEUMIZED!

 

Minut on nyt museoitu! Tampereen taidemuseo teki hienon päätöksen ja hankki kolme Pispala-aiheista linopiirrostani Tampereen kaupungin kokoelmiin. Tämän kokoelman teoksia sijoitetaan kaupungin tiloihin, työtiloihin, hoitolaitoksiin ja kouluihin. Unelmissani voisin ajatella, että näille töille löytyisi uusi koti läheltä Pispalaa, vaikkapa Pispan remontoidulta koululta. 

Hankintapäätös oli minulle aikamoinen yllätys tällaisena naivistina, joka ei kuulu edes Tampereen taiteilijaseuraan (joka ei ehkä jäseneksi edes hyväksyisi itseoppinutta taiteilijaa). Koen sen jonkinlaisena arvostuksena koko naivistista taidesuuntausta kohtaan. Ja suuri tekijä kehittymisessäni ja taiteen teon mielekkyydessä on  ollut ilman muuta Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyihin osallistuminen, erinomaiset kuraattorit (Irene Wai Lwin  Moe, Hannu Castrén ja Veikko Halmetoja),  organisointi (Ulla Heinonen ja muut), toiset naivistit ja tietenkin katselijat ja ostajat, joita on kohdannutkin. Olen mielestäni ihan syystäkin ylpeä!

I am now museumized! The Tampere Art Museum made a great decision and acquired three of my Pispala -themed linocuts for the collections of the city of Tampere. Works from this collection are placed in city spaces, workplaces, nursing homes and schools. In my dreams, I think that these works would find a new home near Pispala, for example at the renovated school of Pispala.

The acquisition decision was quite a surprise to me as a Naïve artist who doesn't even belong to the Tampere artist association (which might not even accept a self-taught artist as a member). I feel it as some kind of appreciation towards the whole Naivist art trend. And a big factor in my development and in the meaningfulness of the work of art has undoubtedly been participating in the NaÏve Artists in Iittala exhibitions, the excellent curators (Irene Wai Lwin Moe, Hannu Castrén and Veikko Halmetoja), the organization (Ulla Heinonen and others), other Naivists and of course the viewers and buyers I have met. I think I'm proud for a good reason!

KISSAT PUUSSA / CATS IN A TREE

 Tein viisi uutta sekatekniikatyötä, joissa on neljä kissaa puussa kussakin. Monoprinttien teko taustoiksi on tosi kivaa, sotkuista ja inspiroivaa. Painelin värejä sienellä, sotkin siveltimellä ja sormilla. Sitten vedostin neljän A4-kokoisen linopiirroksen kissoista värien päälle. Se on aina yllätys, mikä on lopputulos. Nämä ovatkin aika samantapaisia, vaikka pohjissa oli eroja, tummempia ja vaaleampia. Yritin kuitenkin jättää valleampia kohtia kissojen kohdalle, etteivät hukkuisi värien joukkoon. Nämä ovat aika isoja, 40 x 60 cm.

I made five new mixed media works with four cats in a tree in each one of them. Making monoprints as backgrounds is really fun, messy and inspiring. I pressed the colors with a sponge, mixed them with a brush and my fingers. Then I printed four A4 linocuts of cats onto the colors. It's always a surprise what the end result is. These are quite similar, although there were differences in the bases, darker and lighter. However, I tried to leave lighter spots for the cats, so they wouldn't get lost in the colors. These are quite large, 40 x 60 cm.
