Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) naivistisessa maalauksessa on punainen tunnelma. Hemaisevan naisen isot reidet ovat keskellä kuvaa, ja kissalla on autuas ilme naamallaan kun nainen silittää se päätä. Sohva ja verhotkin ovat sopivan muhkeita. Kortti on kutsu taidenäyttelyyn Lontoossa vuodelta 1981.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

There is a red feeling in this Martin Leman's (b 1934) painting. The large thighs of this tasty lady are in the middle of the picture, and the cat has a very satisfied look on her face when the woman stokes her head. Even the couch and curtains are suitably voluminous. The card is an invitation to an art exhibition in London in 1981. 

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

Kolmas joulukortin aihe on lumiukko, jonka sylissä nukkuu musta kissa. Kaverini kysyvät, jäätyykö kissa vai sulaako lumiukko? Tämä on yksivärinen linoleikkaus, ja aion painattaa siitä joulukortteja.

The third idea for a Christmas card is a snowman, and a black cat sleeping in his lap. My friends ask, does the cat freeze or does the snowman met? This is a monochrome linocut, and I plan to print Christmas cards from it. 

IITTALAN KESÄ OHI / SUMMER IN IITTALA IS OVER

Naivistit Iittalassa kesänäyttely 2015 päättyi 23.8. Olin nyt mukana tässä riemukkaassa yhteisnäyttelyssä toista kesää. Hain pois myymättömät työni,  ja niitä ei enää paljon ollutkaan. Seinällä nökötti yksi myymätön linoleikkaus ja ensimmäinen öljyvärimaalauksenikin oli myyty. Kehystämättömiä linojakin oli myyty. Kaikkiaan näyttelyn myynti ylitti reilusti odotukseni: kolmisenkymmentä työtä, yli 200 korttia ja muutama t-paita. 

Ensi kesän 2016 Iittalan naivisminäyttelyn kuraattoriksi on valittu Hannu Castrén. Mielenkiintoista nähdä, miten perinteinen Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttely muuttuu. Muutaman viime vuoden aikana Irene Wailwinmoe on voimiaan säästelemättä koonnut aina vain runsaamman, iloisen, värikkään ja hyväntuulisen näyttelyn. Tänä kesänä näyttelyssä oli töitä yli 600 ja lisäksi huoneellinen Martti Innasen muistonäyttelyä.

Naïve artists in Iittala summer exhibition 2015 closed on 23 August. I participated in the exhibition for the second summer. I fetched my unsold works, and there were not many of them. One linocut remained unsold on the wall, and even my first oil painting was sold. Also unframed linocuts sold well. Altogether the sales exceeded my expectations clearly: about thirty works, over 200 cards and some t-shirts were sold. 

Hannu Castrén has been selected as the curator for next summer´s 2016 exhibition of naivist art.  Its interesting to see, how the traditional Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition will change. During couple of recent years Irene Wailwinmoe has put together without sparing her forces always more plentiful, fun, colouful, and good-humoured exhibition. This summer there was over 600 works in the exhibition and even one room´s memorial to Martti Innanen´s  career as Finland´s most memorable naivist painter.

Tuttu näky vanhoissa puuaitoissa: kissoille on tehty luukku hiirien ja rottien pyydystystä varten. Nämä kaksi valkonaamaista ja keltasilmäistä kissaa ovat pimeän vajan suojassa ja katsovat ulos aika saaliinhimoisina. Kuvaaja on ruotsalainen Staffan Arvegård (s. 1947).

Jo toinen aihe joulukortiksi keskellä hellettä! Tässä linoleikkauksessa musta kissa pyörittää punaista joulupalloa jaloillaan kuin sirkuskissa. Kuva on vedostettu kahdesta erillisestä linoleikkauksesta.

Ihan hölmöä kaivertaa keskellä elokuista hellettä joulukorttiaihetta! Mutta kyllä se joulu sieltä tulee ennen kuin huomaakaan. Tässä joulukorttiin tarkoitetussa linoleikkauksessa kissa kurkistaa joulukranssin keskeltä. Kuva on käsin väritetty.

Englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin kissakortin nimi on Amaryllis. Kortti on täynnä kuvioita ja makeita värejä, vaikka se onkin linoleikkaus. Vakavan näköinen kissa melkein hukkuu tähän riemunkirjavaan kuvaan. Jopa maljakko ja kukkaruukku ovat kuviollisia. Kissan raidallinen turkkikin on hienosti kaiverrettu.

The cat card of an English artist Richard Bawden is called Amaryllis. The card is full of patterns and sweet colours, even though it is a linocut. The stern looking cat is almost disappearing into this multicoloured picture. Even the vase and flowerpot are patterned. The striped fur of the cat is also finely carved.

HUOMINEN - NÄYTTELY / TOMORROW EXHIBITION

Tarja Malinen

Huominen on Haiharan taidekeskuksen tämän kesän 2015 teemanäyttely, johon taiteilijat on  valittu 137 halukkaan joukosta. Samanlaista innostusta en kokenut kuin vastaavassa viime kesän näyttelyssä, jonka teemana oli ruoka. Hauskahan oli kuunnella ennustusautomaatin robottiääninen tulkinta omista vastauksista. Videoteokset eivät nyt avautuneet ollenkaan. Olihan siellä muutama todella kaunis ja koskettavakin työ. Tarja Malisen Yhdessä oli ryhmä keramiikkaisia lapsia kuin meditoimassa ja Sampsa Sarparannan öljyvärimaalauksessa Viimeisellä rannalla kelmeä valo lankeaa yksinäisen pojan hartioille. Iso sarja eri maiden seteleitä, joihin Noora Schroderus oli kirjonut erilaisilla langoilla hiuslaitteita, oli hauska.
Runebergin mökissä voi poiketa ihastelemaan, mitä kaikkea voi tehdä lasimosaiikilla Tiffans ry:n näyttelyssä.

Sampsa Sarparanta

This summer´s 2015 theme exhibition in Haihara Art Center is called Tomorrow. The artists have been selected from 137 applicants. I did not experience same enthusiasm as in last year´s exhibition called Food. Well, it was fun to hear your fortune by a robotic voice from a machine after answering some silly questions. The video works did not open up now at all. But there were  also some really beautiful and touching art works. Tanja Malinen's Together was a group of ceramic children sitting like in meditation, and in Sampsa Sarparanta's oil painting On the Last Shore the sallow light is falling on a back of a lonely boy. A big series of several countries' bank notes, on which Noora Schroderus had embroidered elaborate hairdos, was fun.

In Runeberg's Cottage you can stop by and admire, what can be done with glass mosaic in Tiffans ry's exhibition.

Lisäsin linoleikkaukseen Pyynikiltä pöllön ja kissan sekä pienen lepakon. Kuu kuvassa jo olikin. Kuvittelen kuitenkin, että kuu onkin Pluto.

I added the owl and the pussycat and a small bat to my linocut of the Pyynikki Ridge. There was already a moon. Still, I imagine that the moon is Pluto.

PÖLLÖ JA KISSA / THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT

Tässä linoleikkauksessa pöllön selässä matkustaa pieni musta kissa. Aion yhdistää tämän linon aiemmin tekemääni Pyynikin harjumaisemaan, jossa jo on täysikuu. Kuvan innoittajana on ollut kohta Edward Learin runon kolmannesta säkeistöstä:

In this linocut a small black cat is riding on the back of an owl. I plan to combine this lino with my earlier picture from the Pyynikki Ridge, and there is already a  full moon. The inspiration for this lino was the third verse of a poem by Edward Lear:

They danced by the light of the moon,

ART PISPALAN AKVARELLIELOKUU 2015 / WATER COLOUR EXHIBITION AT ART PISPALA 2015

Päivi Paunu

Elokuu on Art Pispala-gallerian perinteinen akvarellikuukausi. Seinät ovat täynnä vesivärimaalauksia, kevyitä, henkäyksenohuita, reheviä, taitavasti ja ehkä nopeastikin tehtyjä isoja ja pieniä kuvia. Aiheet ovat yleisimmin perinteisiä maisemia, kukkia ja asetelmia. Minuun vetosivat nyt eniten varttuneiden tekijöiden työt. Tekniikka on hallussa ja toteutuksen näennäistä helppoutta voi vai huokaillen ihastella. Pispalalaisen Päivi Paunun (s. 1940) isoista töistä jäin Ylhäältä alas-nimisen kuvan lumoihin. Siinä näkyi hyvin tuttu näkymä Pispalan mäeltä yli kasvimaiden Pyhäjärvelle. Nandor Mikolan (1911-2006) isoja akvarelleja on näyttelyssä useita, palmuista ruukkukasveihin. Ylhäällä seinällä katse kohtaa tamperelaisen Armas Raunion (1911-1994) pienen, tummasävyisen, tunnelmallisen maiseman. Kylli Kosken (1906-1997) akvarelleja olen aina ihaillut, ja sitten galleristi Petri Nieminen kaivoi takahuoneestaan Kylli Kosken (Kylli Haarni nimellä) vuonna 1947 maalatun öljymaalauksen, jonka sivellinjälki muistuttaa erehdyttävästi vesivärimaalausta, leveät vedot, ohut maali, intiimi tunnelma.

Armas Raunio

The August is traditionally a month for water colour paintings in Art Pispala Gallery. The walls are full of water colours, light, ethereal, rich, skillfully and perhaps even fast made large and small pictures. The subjects are usually traditional landscapes , flowers, and still lifes. I was mostly fascinated by the elder artists. The technique is in control, and you can only sighing marvel the seemingly easy looking results. I stayed enchanted by Päivi Paunu´s (b. 1940 and living  in Pispala, Tampere) large paintings, especially the one called From Top to Bottom. There I could see a very familiar scene from Pispala Ridge over the garden lots to the lake Pyhäjärvi. There are several of Nandor Mikola´s (1911-2006) large water colours, from palm trees to plot plants. You can detect a small, dusky, lyric landscape by Armas Raunio (1911-1994, from Tampere) up on the wall. I have always admired Kylli Koski`s (1906-1997) water colours, and then the gallerist Petri Nieminen scooped up from his back room an oil painting by Kylli Koski (then Kylli Haarni) from 1947: the brush strokes are reminding confusingly water colour painting, broad strokes, thin paint, an intimate atmosphere.

FINLAYSON ART AREA/FAA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tampereella Finlaysonin alueelle on toteutettu mielenkiintoinen taidenäyttely tai oikeastaan monta näyttelyä: Finlayson Art Area eli FAA. Osa teoksista on ulkona, ja hienoin niistä on ilman muuta Satakunnankadun yli levittäytyvä Kaarina Kaikkosen takkien meri. Tämä on toisinto taideteoksesta, joka oli samallla paikalla jokunen vuosi sitten. Tamperelaiset ovat rakastuneet tähän taideteokseen. Vanhassa TR1-tehtaassa on Osmo Rauhalan töitä, suurikokoiset maalaukset alakerrassa ovat selkeitä ja tyyniä. Himmelblaun galleriassa on runsas, hauska kokoelma grafiikkaa, istallaatioita ja mahtava näkymä Tammerkoskelle. On tosi surullista jos tämä galleriatila lopetetaan - yksi lempigallerioistani Tampereella!

Osmo Rauhala

There has been produced an interesting exhibition or really a group of exhibitions in Tampere: Finlayson Art Area or FAA. Part of the art is outside, and the finest of them is of course Kaarina Kaikkonen´s sea of men´s jackets spreading over the street Satakunnankatu. This is a repeat of the same kind of work, which was in the same place a few years ago. The people of Tampere are in love with this art work. Osmo Rauhala`s art works are in an old factory TR1, large paintings downstairs are calm and clear. In  the Gallery Himmelblau there is an ample, enjoyable collection of graphics and installations, and an imposing view to Tammerkoski rapids. It is really sad if this gallery is closing - one of my favorite galleries in Tampere!

KISSAKESÄ OLI KIVAA / SUMMER OF CATS WAS FUN

Ensimmäinen oma taidenäyttelyni Kissakesä heinäkuun ajan Haiharan Runebergin mökissä oli hieno kokemus. Paikka oli upea keskellä ikivanhoja puita. Eilen purettiin näyttely mieli haikeana. Vain Margit Hakasen keramiikkakissa jäi isoon takkaan silmät kiiluen. Yllätys oli iso, kun jäljellä olevia töitä listatessa totesin, että myyntiäkin oli huimasta yli odotusten: 35 linoleikkausta, 38 julistetta, joitakin t-paitoja ja monia kortteja. En olisi ikinä uskonut! Tällaiselle itseoppineelle taiteilijan tapaiselle näyttelyn menestyksellä on kyllä iso kannustava merkitys. Taas uusin innoin voi tarttua mielessä pyöriviin aiheisiin, kun illat pitenevät. Vieraskirja on kiehtovaa luettavaa, ja sinne oli piirrelty jokunen kissakin.

My first own art exhibition Summer of Cats during the July in Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara was a fine experience. The place was gorgeous in the middle of ancient trees. We unloaded the exhibition yesterday in a bit wistful mood. Only Margit Hakanen´s ceramic cat remained in the large fireplace with her eyes glowing. It was a big surprise when I listed the remaining works and noted that there had been selling a lot more than I expected: 35 linocuts, 38 posters, some t-shirts and many cards. I would never have believed! The success of the exhibition has a great encouraging meaning for my kind of self-thought so called artist. I can grab with new vigor at the topics circling in my mind when the evenings begin to lengthen. The guest book is inspiring reading, some viewers have even drawn there cats.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER´S GALLERY -NÄYTTELYT / EXHIBITIONS

Shirley Baker

Kaksi hyvää näyttelyä Lontoon Photographer´s Galleryssa Lontoossa: Shirley Baker: Women, Children and Loitering Men (Naisia, lapsia ja lorvailevia miehiä) ja We Want More: Image-Making and Music in the 21th Century (Tahdomme enemmän: Imagonluomista ja musiikkia 21. vuosituhannella). 
Shirley Bakerin (1932-2014) mustavalkoiset ja harvat värilliset valokuvat Pohjois-Englannin työläiskaupunginosista, etenkin Salfordista 1950-1960-luvuilta olivat koskettavia. Hän vietti aikaa kohteidensa keskellä, ystävystyi ja sai kuviinsa aitoutta, rehellisyyttä ja huumoriakin. Tämä ei ollut mitään sosiaalipornoa, vaan lämmintä myötäelämistä.
We Want More -näyttely koostui useiden eri tekijöiden eri tekniikoilla toteuttamista 2000-luvun musiikkiin liittyvistä dokumenteista. Tyypillistä oli, että taiteilija oli itse osa fanijoukkoa tai samaistui voimakkaasti johonkin musiikin suuntaan ja sen harrastajiin (usein punk-musiikkiin). Kuvissa ja videoissa oli todella itse koettu tunnelma.

Roger Ballen

Two good exhibitions in The Photographer´s Gallery in London: Shirley Baker: Women, Children and Loitering Men and We Want More: Image-Making and Music in the 21th Century. 
Shirley Baker`s (1932-2014) black and white and some colour photographs of Northern England`s working class towns, especially Salford from 1950-1960`s were touching. She spent time in the middle of her subjects, made friends with them, and got into her photos a lot of authenticity, honesty and even humor. This was not any social porn, but warm empathy.
We Want More exhibition consisted of several documents of 21th century music made with several different techniques. It was typical, that the artist was himself/herself one of the fans or he/she identified strongly with a certain style of music or it´s fans (often punk music). There was a real self experienced feeling in the pictures.

Anu Pellisen kissakortti on hänen 153. korttinsa. Tämä kortti on Interin 2015 kesäkaupan julisteessakin. Kissa ottaa torkut punaisessa nojatuolissa, kahvi höyryää sivupöydällä ja mottona on: "Hän muisti, että asioilla on taipumus järjestyä, ja otti torkut".

Anu Pellinen´s cat card is her 153th card. This card is illustrated also in Interi´s 2015 summer shop poster. The cat is taking a nap on a red arm hair, coffee is steaming on a side table and there is a motto: "She remembered, that things have a tendency to be arranged, so she took a nap".

THE COURTAULD GALLERY - NÄYTTELYT / EXHIBITIONS

Henri Rousseau

Yksi lempimuseoistani Lontoossa on Courtauld Gallery. Museolla on mahtava kokoelma impressionistien ja jälki-impressionistien töitä. Paul Gauguinit on aina tietenkin katsottava, mutta aina silmiin osuu jotain uuttakin. Nyt jäin toviksi ihailemaan seinäsyvennyksessä olevaa Henri Rousseaun pientä vihreää naivistista maisemaa. Uusin silmin katsoin myös Pablo Picasson kukkakimppua, jollaisia hän teki useita päivässä valmistautuessaan kiireellä ensimmäiseen näyttelyynsä. Taulussa osa kukista pyrkii yläreunasta ulos ja alaosassa on iso tyhjä pöydän kulma. Mutta keltainen väri ja siveltimen jäljet - ne ovat mestarillisia.
Museossa on aina mielenkiintoisia pienehköjä näyttelyitä omista kokoelmista. Nyt näyttelyn nimi oli Unfinished (Viimeistelemättömät). Esittelytekstit kertoivat mielenkiintoista informaatiota siitä, miksi taiteilija oli jättänyt työnsä kesken tai palannut siihen yhä uudelleen neljänkymmenenkin vuoden kuluessa. Minua viehätti yksi Rembrandtin grafiikan lehti, joka oli selvästi jäänyt kesken, mutta hän myi sitä kuitenkin halukkaille ostajille. Rahapulanko takia hän useinkin jätti työn kesken, mutta kohteli sitä lopullisena luomuksena.
Courtauld Galleryn kauppa on yksi parhaista museokaupoista, ja nytkin siellä oli monta kiinnostavaa kissataidekirjaa.

Pablo Picasso

One of my favorite museums in London is The Courtauld Gallery. The museum has a spectacular collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. Of course I always have to see Paul Gauguin´s paintings, but there is always something new. Now I stayed in a niche for a while to watch Henri Rousseau´s small green Naivist landscape. I also looked with new eyes at Pablo Picasso`s flower bouquet, which he made  several in a day preparing in a hurry for his first exhibition. Part of the flowers at the top of the painting are coming out of the frames and at the bottom there is a big piece of empty table. But the yellow colour  and strokes of the brush - they are masterly.
In the museum there are always small interesting exhibitions from the collections of their own collections. Now the name of the exhibition was Unfinished. The introduction texts told interesting facts about the works, why the artists had left the painting unfinished or why he/she returned to the same work even during forty years. I was fascinated by one of Rembrandt´s graphic sheet, which was clearly unfinished, but which he still sold to willing buyers. Was it due to the lack of money that he left often his graphics unfinished, but treated them like finished works.
The Courtauld Gallery´s shop is one of the best museum shops, and now I found several interesting cat art books.
