TAIVAS HYMYILEE JA KEVÄT HEHKUU / THE SKY SMILES AND SPRING GLOWS

 

Hopeinen kuu hehkuu Pispalan taivaalla ja sulat kiertävät sen ympäri kehänä. Tämä on ensimmäinen kokeilu, jossa käytin alaosassa värillistä vedosta linopiirroksesta - vihreää. Kuu ja sulat ovat myös linopiirroksia ja keltainen taivas pehmeää pastellia. Tämä sekatekniikka on osa isompaa sarjaani, 70 x 40 cm. Varmaan teen jatkossakin lisää värillisiä vedoksia, sillä väri tuntuu tuovan maisemaan pehmeyttä. Löysin työlle nimen Pertti Niemisen runosta Kevät: Taivas hymyilee ja kevät hehkuu.

The silvery moon is glowing in the Pispala sky and feathers are circling around it. This is the first experiment where I use at the bottom a colour version of a linocut - green. The moon and feathers are also linocuts and the yellow sky soft pastel. This mixed media work is one in my series of larger ones, 70 x 40 cm. I will surely use also in the future more coloured prints, because they seem to bring some kind of softness to the landscape. I found the name for this work from Pertti Nieminen´s poem Spring: The Sky Smiles And Spring Glows.

SULAT TAIVAALLA - jatkoa / FEATHERS IN THE SKY - continuing

 Pastellitaivas alkaa saada väriä vihreän Pispala-talon yllä - keltaista, harmaita pilviä ja sinistä ylhäällä. Taivaalle on tulossa linopiirroksia sulista, mutta nyt niiden kohdalla on vain aukot.

The pastel sky is starting to get some colour over the green Pispala house - yellow, gray clouds and blue high up. There will also be feathers in the sky, but instead of them there are only empty places.

Uusi linopiirrosten ja pastellin sekatekniikkatyö on aluillaan. Tämä on kokeilu siitä, toimiiko alaosan linopiirroksen vedostus vihreänä. No, nyt Pispalan talo pihoineen on vihreä. Linopiirros kuusta on kelmeän hopeinen. Ajattelin vedostaa kuun ympärille linopiirroksia sulista.

A new mixed media work of linocuts and pastel is on its way. This is an experiment about how would the bottom part linocut look like if it is green. Well, now The Pispala house with its yard is green. The linocut of a moon is pale silvery. I thought that I print feathers around the moon.

Michael Sowa (s. 1945) on saksalainen taiteilija, jonka hassuissa tai surrealistisissa maalauksissa on usein eläimiä. Tämän synkähkön kuvan kissa odottaa pääsyä kotiin. Se kääntyy katsomaan hiukan pelokkaana ja ehkä syyttävästi, sillä sen käsi on mustassa kantositeessä. Varjot seinällä näyttävät uhkaavilta. Onko tässä yö vai aikainen aamu. Mistä kissa on palaamassa kotiin - tappelusta?

Michael Sowa (b. 1945) is German artist and in his silly or surrealist paintings there are often animals. A cat is waiting to let home in this gloomy picture. It is turning to look at you a bit frightened or accusatory, because it´s hand is in a black sling. The shadows on the wall look threatening. Is it a night or early morning? From where the cat is returning home - from a fight?

 

Kangasalan Pikonlinnassa aukeaa taas naivistinen yhteisnäyttely 7.11.2021. Auli Tikkala kokoaa ryhmän galleriaansa Art Villa Armaaseen, ihanaan funkkistaloon järven rannalla. Vietiin jo linopiirroksia, kortteja ja keittiöpyyhkeitä odottamaan esillepanoaan. Muutama muukin naivisti oli jo ehtinyt tuomaan töitään, sain muutaman kuvan niistä, jotka oli jo purettu kuljetuksesta. Näyttely on auki kolme kuukautta, 6.2.2022 asti.

A Naïve art exhibition is opening again in Kangasala, Pikonlinna on the 7th of November, 2021. Auli Tikkala is assembling the group for her gallery Art Villa Armas, in a glorious Art Deco style house by the lake. We took there already my linocuts, cards and tea towels waiting for the presentation. A few other naïve artists had also brought or sent their works for the exhibition, I got photos of some which were already unpacked. The exhibition is pen for three months till the 2nd of February, 2022.

JOULUKORTTEJA / CHRISTMAS CARDS

Joulukortteja on pussitettu tuleviin talvinäyttelyihin ja -kauppoihin. Uusia malleja on pari: punainen kissa ikkunalla ja tumman- sekä vaaleansiniset kissat norjalaisessa villapaidassa. Vanhempiakin kortteja on vielä, suosituimmat taitavat olla nämä: kaksi kissaa ikkunalla, valokissa ja Pispalan jouluyö. Pispalan pikku puodissa kortteja jo on esillä houkuttelevasti. Lisäsin myös Etsy-kauppaani (Linokissa) kolme 6 kortin satsia joulukortteja. Kortit on painettu Tamkopiossa linopiirroksistani.

We have bagged Christmas cards for future winter exhibitions and shops. There are a couple new designs: red cat in the window and dark & light blue cats wearing Norwegian sweater. Older cards are still available, the most favored might be these: two cats in the window, cat entangled in Christmas lights and Pispala at Christmas night. At Pispalan pikku puoti (Pispala small shop) cards are already attractively displayed. I added also into my Etsy shop (Linokissa) three batches of 6 cards each. Cards have been printed at Tamkopio from my linocuts.

IITTALAN TALVI 2021/2022 / WINTER IN IITTALA 2021/2022

 

Talven ja joulun ajan näyttely ja kaupat alkavat pian aueta. Vietiin linopiirroksia, kehystettyjä ja kehystämättömiä, kortteja, kalentereita ja keittiöpyyhkeitä Iittalaan talven naivistiseen näyttelyyn, joka aukeaa 13.11.2021 ja on auki 13.3.2022 asti. Omista töistäni muutama päässee ns. nykynaivistien näyttelyyn Iittalan puukoulun alakerrassa, josta työt saa heti ostettaessa mukaan. Näyttely siis muuttuu talven aikana jonkun verran.  Mukana on suuri osa kesälläkin näyttelyssä mukana olleista naivisteista. Iso osa tavarasta tulee olemaan myynnissä näyttelyn aulakaupassa. Puukoululla oli jo odottelemassa joukko töitä, kissat tietenkin tarttuivat kuviini. Naivismin talvi -näyttelyssä tulee olemaan erikoisosuudet: Stefan Bremerin naivistisia valokuvia puukoulun yläkerrassa ja alakerran isossa salissa Suvi Vasaman paperiveistoksia ja Hannu Riikosen kaupunkikuvia.

The winter and Christmas time exhibitions and shops start to open soon. We took linocuts, framed and unframed, cards, calendars and tea towels to Iittala´s winter naïve art exhibition, which is opening on the 13th of November, 2021 and is open till 13th of March, 2022. Some of my own works will possibly be on the walls of the so called Modern Naïve Art exhibition at the ground floor of the wooden school building. From there the works can be bought and taken home straight away. The exhibition will be changing somewhat during the winter. In this exhibition there will be participating most of the artists from last summer´s exhibition. The great part of my goods will be on sale at the exhibition´s lobby shop. Some of the works by other artists were already waiting in the wooden school, and cats of course got in my photos. There will be special parts in the Naïve Winter exhibition: Stefan Bremer´s naïve photographs upstairs, and in large room downstairs Suvi Vasama´s paper sculptures and Hannu Riikonen´s city paintings.

Tämä kissakortti on ostettu Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttelyn aulakaupasta. Tuttu naivistitaiteilija Pirkko Pullinen-Valtonen (s. 1950) maalasi taulun näyttelyyn. Olemme molemmat olleet mukana Iittalan naivistinäyttelyissä jo melkein 10 vuotta. Tässä kissassa on jotain hellyyttävää. Pieni suu pyrkii hymyyn, mutta silmät ovat hiukan pelokkaat ja näyttää kuin kissa olisi valvonut jo useamman yön silmäpusseista päätellen. Keltaiset ja ruskeat sävyt sopivat hienosti yhteen.

This cat card was bought at the lobby shop of the Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition. A familiar naïve artist Pirkko Pullinen-Valtonen (b. 1950) painted the picture for the exhibition. We have both participated at Iittala`s naïve art exhibitions for almost ten years time. There is something affectionate is this picture. The small mouth is about to smile, but the eyes are a bit timid, and it seems like the cat has been awake already a couple of night judging by the eye bags. The yellow and brown hues fit nicely together.

PYYHKEITÄ JOULUKSI / TEA TOWELS FOR CHRISTMAS

 Talven näyttelyt ja joulukaupat ovat jo lähellä. Joulukorttien ja kalentereiden lisäksi myyntiin on tulossa keittiöpyyhkeitä. Tilasin nyt neljä mallia Printscorpiolta. Laatu on erinomainen, 50 % pellavaa ja 50 % puuvillaa. Kuvat pyyhkeisiin ovat neljästä linopiirroksestani ja värit toistuvat pyyhkeissä tosi hienosti. Näyttää melkein kuin kuvat olisivat maalauksia kun pyyhkeen pinnalla näkyy hiukan kudotun kankaan kuvio. Pyyhkeitä tulee joulua ennen myyntiin Iittalan naivistinäyttelyn aulapuotiin, Villa Armas -galleriaan Kangasalle, Runebergin mökkiin Haiharaan ja Pispalan Pikku Puotiin.

The winter exhibitions and shops are always near opening. In addition to Christmas cards and calendars there will on sale also tea towels. I ordered four models from Printscorpio. The quality is superb, 50 % linen and 50 % cotton. The pictures for the towels are from my four linocuts, and the colours are printed on the towels just fine. It almost seems like the pictures would be paintings when you see the pattern of the woven canvas on the surface of the towel. These towels will be on sale before Christmas at the lobby shop of Iittala´s naïve art exhibition, at Villa Armas gallery in Kangasala, at the Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara and Pispala´s Little Shop.

PILVET PITKIN TAIVASTA / CLOUDS ALONG THE SKY

 

Viisi perhosta, kaksi lintua ja hyönteinen (kaikki linopiirroksia) on nyt vedostettu oranssin linokuun ympärille pastellipilvien päälle. Kuvan alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan talosta ja pihasta. Tämäkin sekatekniikkatyö (linopiirros/pastelli/tussi) sai nimensä Juice Leskisen lyriikasta: Pilvet pitkin taivasta (kappaleesta Aamu alkaa A:lla). Yksi perhosista on väritetty keltaiseksi. Tuntuu, että näitä isomman sarjan (70 x 40 cm) sekatekniikkoja tulee edelleen lisää.

Five butterflies, two birds and an insect are now printed around the orange linocut moon on the pastel clouds. At the bottom of the picture there is a linocut of a Pispala house and yard. This mixed media work (linocut / pastel / ink) got also its name from the lyrics of Juice Leskinen: Clouds Along the Sky (from a song Morning Begins with an A). One of the butterflies is coloured yellow. It feels that there will be more of these in my larger series (70 x 40 cm) of mixed media works.

 Kolmannessa sinisessä versiossa pastellitaivaasta ja Pispalan haulitorni-linosta on sekä linokuu että erilliset linopalaset rannoista. Valkoiseksi jätetty järvi näyttää melkein talviselta. Pari pilveä lipuu taivaalla ohi huipulla huojuvan kopin, jossa joku tekee työtään. Tässäkin taivaanranta on oranssi. Yksi pohja vielä on jäljellä, ja siinä on rantapalojen lisäksi iso kuu.

The third blue version of a pastel sky and Pispala shot tower has both a lino moon and separate lino pieces for shores. The white surface of the lake looks almost like wintry or icy. A couple clouds are floating in the sky past the wobbly booth at the top of the tower, where someone is working. Also here the horizon is orange. One "base" is still left, and there is a big moon in addition to the pieces for shores.

Saksalaisen kuvittajan Tatiana Korchemkinan kissamuotokuvat ovat tosi pelkistettyjä. Kaikilla kuudella kissalla on pystyt korvat, nappisilmät, samanlaiset nenät, tosin yhden nenä onkin sydämenmallinen. Yksi kissa on valkoinen, yksi musta, kaksi on mustavalkoisia, yhdellä on suuri pilkku toisen silmän ympärillä ja punainen kissa on hiukan uhkaava aurinkolaseineen ja parransänkineen, ehkä pikkurikollinen. Hauska ja iloinen kortti silti!

The cat portraits by German illustrator Tatiana Gorchemkina are really reduced. All six cats have pointed ears, button eyes, same kind of noses, except one nose is heart shaped. One cat is white, one is black, two are black and white, one cat has a large spot around her eye and the red cat looks a bit threatening with his sunglasses and stubble, perhaps a petty criminal. Anyway, a fun and happy card!

KUU JA PERHOSET - jatkoa / MOON AND BUTTERFLIES - Continuing

 Pastellitaivas on aina yllätys. Nyt taivaalle tuli joukko kellanruskeita pilviä, jotka hiukan toistavat kuun ruosteenpunaa. Jätin tyhjiä aukkoja perhosia varten taivaalle ja yritin häivyttää aukkojen reunoja, jotta perhosten vedostus olisi helpompaa kun ei ole ihan tarkkoja rajoja. Illalla aurinko väritti työn laskiessaan, ja siihen tuli ihan oma tunnelmansa. Tuon kun saisi vangituksi!

The pastel sky is always a surprise. Now there came into the sky a bunch of yellowish and brownish clouds, which are like repeating the rusty red colour of the moon. I left empty spaces for the butterflies and tried to fade the borders of the spaces, so the printing of the butterflies would be easier when there are no exact border lines. In the evening the sun coloured the work, and it got its own atmosphere. If I only could capture that!

Aloitin yhden uuden isomman sarjan (70 x 40 cm) linopiirros ja pastellityötä. Tähän on tulossa perhosia, pari uuttakin pientä linoperhosta. Oranssi kuu ja alaosan Pispalan piha, molemmat linopiirroksia on jo vedostettu. Mallinnan hiukan jo perhosia kuvaan.

I started a new larger series (70 x 40 cm) linocut and pastel work. There will be butterflies in the sky, a couple new small lino butterflies. The orange moon and a Pispala yard, both of them linocuts are already printed. I´m modelling already some butterflies on the picture.

Toinen uusi versio sinisestä pastellitaivaasta ja Pispalan haulitornista sai erillisten rantakappaleiden sijaan oranssin linokuun. Kuun oranssi väri toistuu taivaanrannassa. Nytkin joku on nähtävästi töissä kopissaan tornin huipulla. Pastellitaivasta on tosi meditatiivista tehdä, etenkin noiden portaiden kohdalla, jossa koloja riittää.

The second new version of blue pastel sky and Pispala shot tower got an orange lino moon  instead of the separate lino pieces of shores. The orange colour of the moon is repeated on the horizon. Also now there seems to be someone working in his hut at the top of the tower. It´s really meditative to make the pastel sky, especially around the stairs, where there is enough of holes and crannies. 

PISPALAN HAULITORNI ( SININEN): 1 / PISPALA SHOT TOWER (BLUE):1

 Syksyisin yleensä on aika tehdä muutama uusi versio linopiirros & pastellitaivas -töistä, aiheena Pispalan haulitorni. Olen aiemmin vedostanut "pohjia", joissa on linopiirros haulitornista, ehkä myös linopalat rannoista ja kuusta. Nyt voin lisätä näihin pohjiin pastellitaivaan. Taivas on nyt aika tumman sininen, pari pilvenhaituvaa seilaa ohi tornin ja tornissa palaa valo. Taivaanrannassa on vielä laskevan auringon valo. Nämä haulitornikuvat ovat aika pieniä, 30 x 20 cm eli A4.

Usually it´s autumn when I want to make some new versions of linocut & pastel sky works, the subject is Pispala shot tower. I have printed earlier "bases" with a linocut of the shot tower, perhaps also small lino parts for shores and moon. Now I can just add pastel sky to these bases. The sky is now quite dark blue, a couple of small clouds are floating by the tower, and there is light inside the tower. The light of a setting sun can be seen on the horizon. These shot tower pictures are rather small, 30 x 20 cm ia. A4.

Tämä Nukkuva kissa on kuvitusta Elke Heidenreichin kirjaan Nero Corneole-nimisestä kissasta. Kuvituksen on tehnyt saksalainen Quint Buchholz (s.1957). Musta kissa ei kuitenkaan tunnu ihan kokonaan nukkuvan, toinen silmä on raollaan ja tarkkailee. Vaaleanpunainen kuononpää haistelee valppaana. Taustan pehmeä, vihreä maisema tuntuu melkein tuoksuvan aamun usvalta, ja se on unessa. Kuvan kompositio on hieno, kissan tarkkaan kuvattu turkki täyttää melkein puolet kuvasta.

This Sleeping Cat is illustration for Elke Heinreish´s book about a cat called Nero Corneole. The illustration was done by German Quint Buchholz (b.1957). Still, the black cat seems not to be quite asleep, the other eye is half open and observing. The pink muzzle is sniffing vigilant. The green soft landscape in the background feels like smelling of mist of the morning, and it is asleep. The composition of the picture is fine, the carefully painted fur of the cat fills almost half of the picture.
