AUKOT KALOILLE / HOLES FOR THE FISH : 7

 Isohkon linopastellityön alaosan pastellivesi alkaa olla valmis. Nyt vesi on täynnä sapluunojen avulla muodostuneita aukkoja, joihin aion vedostaa linopiirroksia kaloista. Ihan alhaalla on pohjakiviä, ja niiden päällä on aukkoja linosimpukoille. Ehkä pohjalla pitäisi olla vielä jotain vesikasveja.

The pastel water of the lower part of the rather large lino pastel work is almost ready. Now the water is full of holes created by the stencils, into which I plan to print linocuts of fish. At the very bottom there are rocks, and on top of them there are holes for lino shells. Maybe there should be some more aquatic plants at the bottom.

Pastelliveteen alkaa erottua sinisempi ja violetimpi osa. Rannalle heijastuu ehkä taivaalta punaista väriä ja pohjaan tuli muutama auringonsäde. Kalojen ja simpukoiden paikalla on vielä sapluunoita.

The pastel water is starting to show a bluer and more violet part. There is perhaps a red color reflected from the sky on the shore and a few rays of sunlight have reached the bottom. There are still stencils in place of the fish and mussels.

Ison sekatekniikatyöni alaosa on nyt  saanut ensimmäisen kerroksen pehmeää pastellia. Tästä tulee Tahmelan rannan vesi. Pohjalla näkyy hiukan pohjaa, kiviä ja simpukoita. Vedessä uiskentelee parvi kaloja, joita varten olen tehnyt sapluunat. Haluaisin vedestä hiukan tummempaa, mutta kalat haluan vedostaa vaalealle pohjalle, samoin simpukat.

The bottom of my large mixed media work has now received its first layer of soft pastel. This will be the water on the Tahmela beach. You can see a bit of the bottom, rocks and shells on the bottom. There is a flock of fish swimming in the water, for fish I have made stencils. I would like the water to be a little darker, but I want to draw the fish on a light background, as well as the shells.

Bruno Mason valokuvan nimi on "Le voile bleu / Sininen verho". Harmaa/valkoinen kissa on tarttunut siniseen verhoon tai harsoon. Sillä on kiva leikkiä, ehkä se jopa rahisee. Kissan ilme on hiukan:"Anna mun leikkiä tällä vielä vähän aikaa, eikös niin?". Sininen väri on kaunis ja sopii hyvin kissan värittömyyteen.

Bruno Maso's photo is called "Le voile bleu / The Blue Curtain". A gray/white cat is clinging to a blue curtain or gauze. It's having fun playing with it, maybe it's even rustling. The cat's expression is a bit like: "Let me play with this for a little longer, okay?". The blue color is beautiful and goes well with the cat's colorlessness.

KALOJA / FISH : 4

 

Aloitan ison linopastellin alaosaa, jossa on Tahmelan rannan vettä. Ja vedessä on tietenkin kaloja  ja simpukoita, jotka ovat linopiirrroksia. Ensin tämä 80 x 90 cm tila näytti kaaokselta, kalat uivat minne sattui. Tein kaloista sapluunoita, jotta osaisin jättää pastelliin aukot kaloja ja sinpukoita varten. Simpikat ovat kuvan pohjalla, sillä alas tulee pohjaa ja kiviä.

 I start with the bottom part of a large lino pastel, which shows the water of the Tahmela beach. And of course there are fish and mussels in the water, and they are linocuts. At first this 80 x 90 cm space looked like chaos, the fish were swimming wherever they could. I made stencils of the fish so that I could leave openings in the pastel for the fish and mussels. The mussels are at the bottom of the picture, because there is the bottom and rocks below.

Edistystä! Suunnittelemani ison linopastellin keski osa on nyt vedostettu ja onnistuneesti paperilla. Keskiosan koko on 40 x 90 cm ja sen ylä- ja alapuolella on ainakin 80 cm tilaa taivaalle ja vedelle.

Progress! The middle part of the large lino pastel I´m planning is now printed and successfully on paper. The size of the middle part is 40 x 90 cm and there is at least 80 cm of space above and below it for the sky and water.

ART PISPALASSA

Tammikuun 2025 naivistinäyttelyn jäljiltä Art Pispalaan jäi vielä muutama linopiirrokseni. Vakipaikalle oven viereen kapealla seinälla  on neljä Pispalan talo-kuvaa, mm. Ylä-Voiman talo ja  Lauri Viita-museo. Muualle galleriaan jäi vielä aika iso Kesä jatkuu kesä-linopiirros. Sesse kehysti tästä kaksiosaisesta linosta sellaisen version, jossa osat eivät olekaan kiinni toisissaan vaan erillään. Yllättävän erilaisilta nuo versiot näyttävät.

After the January 2025 Naive art exhibition, I still have a few of my linocuts left at Art Pispala. In my usual place on the narrow wall next to the door are four Pispala house pictures, including the Ylä-Voima house and the Lauri Viita museum. Elsewhere in the gallery, there is still a rather large Kesä jatkuu. Kesä / Summer continues. Summer linocut. Sesse framed a version of this two-part linocut so that the parts are not attached to each other but separate. Those versions look surprisingly different.

ISO PAPERI / BIG PAPER : 2

 

Jos todella aion tehdä 40 x 90 cm kokoisen linopiirroksen lisäksi sekatekniikkatyöhöni sekä taivasta että vettä, kuvasta tulee noin 200 x 90 cm kokoinen. Sen kokoisen paperin käsitteleminen on hankalaa. Paperi pyrkii aina kiertymään rullalle. Pidän sitä yhden yön eri päin rullattuna, ja edelleen se haluaa rullautua väärään suuntaan. Se on todellista taistelua, nimittäin saada paperi suoraan ja sileäksi jotta sen edes pystyy mittaamaan.

If I really plan to do a 40 x 90 cm linocut, as well as a mixed media work of both sky and water, the image will be about 200 x 90 cm. Working with paper of that size is tricky. The paper always tends to curl up. I keep it rolled up one night in a different direction, and it still wants to roll up in the wrong direction. It's a real struggle, namely to get the paper straight and smooth enough to even measure it.

RINNETTÄ JA RANTAA / RIDGE AND BEACH : 1

 

Kuusi A4-kokoista linopiirrosta yhdessä, sehän tekee 40 x 90 cm kuvan. Nyt on siis jotain isoa suunnitteilla. Tässä kuvassa on sekä Pispalan rinne että Tahmelan ranta, Jos siis jatkan sekatekniikalla sekä taivasta ylös että vettä alas, aika iso kuva siitä tulee.

Six A4-sized linocuts together, that makes a 40 x 90 cm picture. So now I have something big planned. This picture shows both the Pispala ridge and the Tahmela beach. So if I continue with mixed media, both from the sky up and the water down, it will be a pretty big picture.

Pienen kissan katse on magneettinen. Mitä hän katsoo ja onko se jotain pelottavaa? Ainakin kissanpoika on herätetty uniltaan. Tämä kortin kuva on selvästi osa jostain isommasta, va semmalla roikkuu jotain lankaa ja kissa on jonkun sylissä tai peiton päällä. Löytyihän se koko kuvakin Googlesta. Maalaus on amerikkalianen, tekijä tuntematon, siis kansantaidetta tai naivismia. Kissa on alkuperäisestä kuvasta peilikuva, toinen kissa pitää lankavyyhtiä käälissään ja emo vahtii (sinua).

The little cat's gaze is magnetic. What is he looking at and is it something scary? At least the kitten has been awakened from his sleep. This picture on the card is clearly part of something bigger, there is some thread hanging on the left and the cat is in someone's lap or on a blanket. I found the whole picture on Google. The painting is American, the artist is unknown, so it is folk art or Naive art. The cat is a mirror image of the original picture, the other cat is holding a ball of thread in its crotch and the mother is watching (you).

HYVÄÄ YSTÄVÄNPÄIVÄÄ / HAPPY VALENTINE

 

Huomenna 14.2.2025 on Ystävänpäivä. Löysin pari pientä epäonnistunutta monotypia-taustaa, ja niissä näkyi mielikuvituksessa jonkunlainen sydämen kuva. Minulla on pienen pieni sydämenmallinen linopiirros liimattuna sampanjapullon korkkkiin, leimasin siis. Miksei sitten voisi käyttää leimasinväriä ja vedostaa monotypiapohjille pieniä sydämiä. Tusillä vielä yhdistelin sydämiä, ja yritin saada kuviosta sydämenmallisen.

Tomorrow, February 14, 2025, is Valentine's Day. I found a couple of small failed monotype backgrounds, and in my imagination I saw some kind of heart shape. I have a small heart-shaped linocut glued to the cap of a champagne bottle, so I have a stamp. Why not use stamp ink and print small hearts onto the monotype backgrounds. I also combined the hearts with a marker, and tried to make a heart shape from the pattern.

AMI HYVÄRINEN: Almus Laevis - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

 

Kulttuuritalo Laikun Studiossa poikkesin Ami Hyvärisen valokuvanäyttelyssä Almus laevis, siis aiheena Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava, omakin lempipuuni. Videossa näkyi puu eri vuodenaikoina, ehdottomasti kauneimpana talvella, paljaana kun kauniit koukeroiset oksat näkyvät. Harras tunnelma, kuin pyhä puu.

At the cultural center Laikku's Studio, I stopped by Ami Hyvärinen's photo exhibition Almus laevis, the subject of which was the Tahmela shore elm, also my favorite tree. The video showed the tree in different seasons, definitely at its most beautiful in winter, bare when the beautiful curved branches are visible. A devout atmosphere, like a sacred tree.

Kuvan nimi on "Päiväunia", mutta tekijästä ei ole tietoa. Tässä keltaruskeassa viktoriaanisessa asetelmassa tai suklaarasiakuvassa nähdään selvästi päiväunia. Tytöllä on kädet haaveillen poskilla, kaunis keltainen tukka valtoimenaan ja mustasukkaiset ja -kenkäiset jalat turkispeittoa vasten. Vieressä torkkuu koira. Kissa on saanut hienon paikan nokosille, pehmeän kangasjakkaran. Lehti on jäänyt lukematta, ja punainen lankapallokin paikoilleen matolle.

The title of the picture is "Day Dreams", but there is no information about the artist. In this yellow-brown Victorian still life or chocolate box picture, a daydream is clearly being experienced. The girl has her hands on her cheeks, her beautiful yellow hair down, and her black stockinged and shoe-clad feet against the fur blanket. A dog is dozing next to her. The cat has found a nice place to nap, a soft fabric stool. The magazine has remained unread and the red thread ball is still in place on the carpet.

IITTALA, HELMIFEST

Eilen oli kiva Helmifest Iittalassa, talven piristys, osa Naivismin Talvi-näyttelyä. 

Ensin Sointu Fritzen esitelmä naivismin kehittymisestä Suomessa, Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyn synnystä ja keskustelua siitä, mitä naivismi oikein on, sen arvostuksesta ja halveksunnasta eri aikoina, vanhoista, nuorista, mies-ja naisnaivisteista. 

Näyttelyn kuraattori Veikko Halmetoja haastatteli muutamaa paikalla ollutta naivistia. Tarkkaavaista yleisöä paikalla ja pari ovenpielessä ollutta pientä tauluakin talvinäyttelyssä ilahduttivat.

Yesterday was a nice Helmifest in Iittala, a winter cheer, part of the Winter of Naivism exhibition.

First, Sointu Fritze's presentation on the development of Naive art in Finland, the birth of the Naive Artists in Iittala exhibition and a discussion about what Naive art and artists really is, its appreciation and contempt at different times, old, young, male and female naivists.

The curator of the exhibition, Veikko Halmetoja, interviewed a few naive artists who were present. The attentive audience present and a couple of small paintings in the doorway were also delighted by the winter exhibition.

HIMMELBLAU - NÄYTTELYT / EXHIBITIONS

 Galleria Himmelblaussa on nyt monta näyttelyä ihailtavana. Inka Hannulan ja Teemu Raudaskosken yhteismaalaukset, monet tosi isoja, levittäytyvät koko kerrokseen. Maalauksissa voit nähdä mitä vain, mielikuvituksen mukaan. Ja ne värit! Lasikaapissa ovat Inkan ja Teemun univormut tanssi-improvisaatioita varten, kuin avaruusasut. Yksi kerros esittelee Tiina Kivisen mezzotintoja ja monotypioita, luontoaiheita, kauniita. Näyttelyn myydyin teos on Tiina Kivisen kärpäsenkokoinen mezzo ”Paskakärpänen”, jo ainakin neljä myyty. Ulla-Maija Alasen pigmentti- ja mustesuihkutulosteet sopivat Kivisen jatkoksi. Grafiikanpajan parvella oli vielä muutama Tuukka Peltosen punkhenkinen puupiirros ja Päivi Sompin hieno grafiikka koirateemalla, hiukan faaraohenkisiä tunnelmia.

There are now many exhibitions to admire at Gallery Himmelblau. Inka Hannula and Teemu Raudaskoski's joint paintings, many of them really large, spread across the entire floor. You can see anything in the paintings, depending on your imagination. And those colors! In the glass cabinet are Inka and Teemu's uniforms for dance improvisations, like space suits. One floor presents Tiina Kivinen's mezzotints and monotypes, nature themes, beautiful. The best-selling work in the exhibition is Tiina Kivinen's fly-sized mezzo "Paskakärpänen", at least four have already been sold. Ulla-Maija Alanen's pigment and inkjet prints are a perfect continuation of Kivinen. In the loft of the graphics workshop, there were a few still a few punk-inspired woodcuts by Tuukka Peltonen and Päivi Somppi's fine graphics with a dog theme, with a slightly pharaonic atmosphere.

NIIN IHANASTI PAUKKUI PAKKANEN / SO WONDERFULLY THE FROST CRACKLED

 

Tarkoitus oli tehdä tästä kuvasta ensi jouluksi joulukortti. Ehkä se nyt onnistuukin. Talvella saa nimittäin ihan erilaisen vireen tehdä talvinen kuva kuin kesällä. Yleensä olen innostunut tekemään joulukorttia heinäkuussa ja helteellä. Ihan tähän talven tunnelmaan silloin ei pääse. Kuva sai nimen Lauri Pohjanpään runosta Oravan joulu: " Niin ihanasti paukkui ja puri pakkanen". Perhoskissa ja lumihiutaleet ovat linopiirroksia ja tausta pastellia. Kuvan koko on 20 x 20 cm.

The intention was to make this picture into a Christmas card for next Christmas. Maybe it will work now. In winter, you get a completely different mood when making a winter picture than in summer. I am usually trying to make a Christmas card in July and in the heat. You can't quite get into this winter mood then. The picture was named after Lauri Pohjanpää's poem Squirrell's Christmas: "So Wonderfully the Frost Crackled And Bit". The butterflie cat and snowflakes are linocuts and the background is pastel. The size of the picture is 20 x 20 cm.

LUMIHIUTALEET / SNOW FLAKES

 Talvisessa maisemassa lentelevä perhoskissa tarvitsi taakseen lumihiutaleita. Olen tehnyt hiutaleita linopiirroksina ja liimannut nämä pienet stampit eli leimasimet shampanjapullon korkkeihin. Näin saan hiutaleita vedostettaessa tarpeeksi painoa. Perhonen on myös linopiirros. Siivissä on hiukan värikynää ja tausta on pastellia. Koko on 20 x 20 cm.

A butterfly cat flying in a winter landscape needed snowflakes behind it. I have made the flakes as linocuts and glued these small stamps to the caps of champagne bottles. This way I get enough weight when printing the flakes. The butterfly cat is also a linocut. There is a little colored pencil on the wings and the background is pastel. The size is 20 x 20 cm.
