HEIKKI, HIIRIKISSA / HEIKKI THE MOUSE CATCHER

 Heikki on hiirikissa. Silmät ovat viirulla ja katse tarkkana. Korvat on painettu päätä vasten, luimistellen. Ja hiirikissan hampaat näkyvät hyvin. Mutta onkohan tämä Heikiltä vain mahtailua? Tämä linopiirros kuuluu sarjaani pieniä koiria ja kissoja, koko on vain 15 x 10 cm.

Heikki is a mouse cat. The eyes are wide and the gaze is attentive. The ears are pressed against the head.  And the mouse cat's teeth are very visible. But is this just wishful thinking on Heikki's part? This lino drawing belongs to my series of small dogs and cats, the size is only 15 x 10 cm.

PIILOSILLA / HIDE AND SEEK

 

Vedostin nyt uudelleen linopiirroksen kissasta pahvilaatikossa. Halusin saada laatikon ruskeana, joten leikkasin linopiirroksen osat (laatikko, tausta ja kissan pää) erilleen. Tätä kai kutsutaan Zigsaw-tekniikaksi, kuin palapeliä kokoaisi. KUn värjää laatikomn ruskealla musteella ja muut mustalla, voi koko kuvan vedostaa yhdellä kertaa. Ensimmäinen kokeiluni vaalentaa pahvilaatikon ruskea väri haluamakseni ei oikein onnistunut käyttämällä Extenderiä eli värin ohennusta. Jäljestä tuli epätasainen ja laikukas. Nyt sain hiukan ohjetta ratkaista ongelma lisäämällä ruskeaan hiukan valkoista väriä ja ihan värän Extenderiä. Nyt tulos on mielestäni hyvä. Näin yksinkertaista se on kun saa ohjeen kokeneemmilta (Linocut Friends -Facebook-ryhmässä).

I now reprinted the linocut of a cat in the cardboard box. I wanted the box to be brown, so I cut the parts of the linocut (the box, the background and the cat's head) apart. I guess this is called the Zigsaw technique, like putting together a puzzle. If you color the box with brown ink and the others with black, you can print the entire image in one go. My first attempt to lighten the brown color of the cardboard box as I wanted was not quite successful using Extender, i.e. color thinning. The print became uneven and patchy. Now I got some instructions to solve the problem by adding a little white color to the brown and just a little bit of Extender. Now I think the result is good. It's that simple when you get instructions from more experienced people (in the Linocut Friends Facebook group).

Tällä kissalla ihan omanlaisensa turkki, hienosti maalattu raita-, viiva ja pallokuvioinen ja myös kauniin ruskehtavan värinen. Tämä on kuin upea iltapuku! Kuva on klassinen kissa-asetelma: kissa sohvalla, taustalla ikkunasta avautuva maisema. Se maisemataulu punaiselta seinältä kyllä puuttuu. Sohven ja ulkona olevien puiden vihreä sopii yhteen. Taiteilija on naivisti Christine Cipriano ja kuvan nimi on "Mistigri".

This cat has a very unique fur, nicely painted with stripes, lines and ball patterns and also in a beautiful brownish color. This is like a great evening dress! The picture is a classic cat composition: a cat on the couch, in the background a landscape from the window. Still, the landscape painting on the red wall is missing from the picture. The green of the sofa and the trees outside match. The painting was done by a Naïve artist Christine Cipriano and the picture is called "Mistigri".

ONNI / HAPPINESS

 

Kokeilin tässä ideaa lisätä linopiirrokseen mökkimäestä sekä pastellivesi että pastellitaivas. Tätä oli tosi kiva tehdä, joten jotain samantapaista saattaa syntyä jatkossakin. Näin tehtynä kuvasta tulee aika korkea ja kapea, 80 cm x 30 cm. Ja nimen etsiminenkin oli hauskaa. Tämän nimeksi tuli säe Matti Jurvan laulusta 1900-luvun alkupuolelta: " Yli järven luo onni sillan niin kultaisen luokse mökkimme pienen punaisen".

Here I tried the idea of adding both pastel water and pastel sky to the linocut of the cottage hill. It was really nice to do this, so something similar might happen in the future. When done this way, the picture becomes quite tall and narrow, 80 cm x 30 cm. And searching for a name was fun too. The name for this work came from a verse from Matti Jurva's song from the beginning of the 20th century: "Across the lake the happiness makes a golden bridge  to our little red cottage".

LINNUT MÖKKIMÄEN TAIVAALLE / BIRDS IN THE SKY OF THE COTTAGE HILL

 

Nyt on linopiirrokset lintuparvestakin vedostettu mökkimäen taivaalle. Pienimmät linnut, hiukan pääskysen näköiset ovat oikeastaan leimasimia, liimattu viinipullon korkkiin ja helppo painaa paperille. Lintuja on kaikkiaan 16 taivaalla. Pientä viimeistelyä enään tarvitaan.

Now the linocuts of a flock of birds are printed onto the sky of the cottage hill. The smallest birds, a bit like swallows, are actually stamps, glued to the wine bottle cap and easy to print on paper. There are a total of 16 birds in the sky. A little finishing is needed.

TAIVAS MÖKKIMÄELLE / SKY TO THE COTTAGE HILL

 

Tein horisontin mökkimäen taivaalle pehmeillä pastelleilla. Nyt taivas häipyy mäen taakse ja hehkuu hiukan keltaisena. Nyt vaakasuora pilviverho alhaalla taivaalla ei enää häiritse silmääni. Seuraavaksi vedostan linopiirrrokset linnuista taivaalle.

I made the horizon for the sky of the cottage hill with soft pastels. Now the sky fades behind the hill and glows a little yellow. Now the horizontal curtain of clouds in the low sky no longer bothers my eye. Next, I print linocuts of the birds into the sky.

PUNERTAVAA TAIVASTA / PINK SKY

Mökkimäen ylle alkoi nyt tulla punertavaa pastellitaivasta. Tuo punerrus heijastuu alaosan veteenkin rannalla. Selkeä raja horisontissa ei sovi tähän kuvaan, jossa lintuparvien ja mäen mjuodot ovat pyöreitä. Pitää siis kehitellä.

A reddish pastel sky began to appear over the cottage hill. That blush is also reflected in the water at the bottom part on the beach. A clear border on the horizon does not fit this picture, where the lines of the flocks of birds and the hill are round. So I have to develop something else.

LINTUJA MÖKKIMÄELLE / BIRDS TO THE COTTAGE HILL

 

Kun mökkimäen alaosan vesi ja kalat ovat valmiit, aloitin taivaan teon mökkimäen ylle. Ensin asettelin paikoilleen linopiirroksia linnuista. Ne tulevat kaaren muotoisena parvena hiukan samanlaisessa muodossa kuin mökin yllä lentävät linnut ja koko kumpumainen mäki. Taivas seuraavaksi pastellivärillä.

When the water and fish in the lower part of the cottage hill are ready, I started making the sky above the cottage hill. First I put linocuts of birds in place. They come in an arc-shaped flock in a somewhat similar shape to the birds flying over the cottage and the whole humped hill. Next, the sky in pastel colors.

Frank Paton (1855-1909) on englantilainen taiteilija, joka tunnettiin viktoriaanisena aikana etenkin eläinmaalauksistaan. "Valmiina" / "Alert" kuvaa aika isoa kissaa, joka hiipii pitkin lattiaa valmiina hyökkäämään johonkin kohteeseen. Onko kuvan ulkopuolella hiiri, lintu vai ihminen? Kissa on ehkä vintillä, kattoparrut takaanaan, syksyn omenasadosta muutama on vielä lattialla. Kissan turkki on erityisen hienosti maalattu, pehmeä, ruskearaitainen.

Frank Paton (1855-1909) is an English painter who was known in the Victorian period especially for his animal paintings. "Alert" describes a rather large cat that creeps along the floor ready to attack some target. Is there a mouse, a bird or a person outside the picture? The cat is probably in an attic room, the roof trusses are behind him, a few of the autumn apple harvest are still on the floor. The cat's fur is especially finely painted, soft, with brown stripes.

VETTÄ JA KALOJA / WATER AND FISH

 

Uuden mökkimäen alaosaan tuleva vesi ja kalat on hauska tehdä. On oikeastaan kaksi tapaa tehdä nämä kalat: joko vedostaa ne ensimmäiseksi paperille tai stten tehdä niistä sapluunat ja jättää kaloille aukot vedostusta varten vasta kun pastellivesi on ensin tehty. Nyt tein sapluunat ja asttelin ne paperille sekä kiinnitin palasella teippiä. Kalojen kohdalle jätän puhtaan paperin, ja siinä pitää olla aika suurpiirteinen ja jättää oukot summittaisiksi, ei terävärajaisiksi. Seuraavaksi taivasta.

The water and fish coming to the bottom of the new cottage hill is fun to make. There are actually two ways to make these fish: either to print them on paper first, or to make templates out of them and leave holes for the fishes for printing only after the pastel water is done first. Now I made the templates and laid them out on the paper and fixed them with a piece of tape. I leave a piece of clean paper next to the fish, and it has to be quite sketchy and leave the gaps rough, no sharp outlines. Next the sky.

UUSI VERSIO MÖKKIMÄKEÄ / NEW VERSION OF A COTTAGE ON A HILL

 

Mitä jos tekisinkin sellaisen version linopiirrroksesta mökkimäestä, että siihen yhdistyisi sekä taivas että vesi. Kuvastahan tulee sitten aika korkea ja kapea. Aloitin vedestä pastelliväreillä ja lisäsin linopiirroksia kaloista. Seuraavaksi taivasta.

What if I made a linocut version of the cabin on a hill that combined both sky and water. The picture will then be quite tall and narrow. I started with water with pastel colors and added linocuts of fish. Next, the sky.

RUNEBERGIN TORTTU TULI KOTIIN / RUNEBRG'S TART CAME TO HOME

 Sain kuvan yhden linopiirrokseni päästyä uuteen kotiin. Kehyspahveissa ollut Runebergin torttu matkasi postissa. Kuvassa huomio kiinnittyy taustalla olevaan mustavalkoiseen kissaan. Kuvan uusi isäntä tai emäntä varmaan, Torttu jatkaa nyt uutta elämäänsä iloisena.

I got a picture of one of my linocuts after it got to a new home. The Runeberg's tart in a cardboard frame was sent in the mail. In the picture, the attention is drawn to the black and white cat in the background. Probably the new master or mistress of the picture, The tart is happily continuing his new life.

"EI PÖLLÖMPI OLO!" / "ACTUALLLY FEELING FUNNY!"

 Sarjaan pieniä linopiirroksia kissoista ja koirista ilmestyi nyt tämä kissa: "Ei pöllömpi olo!" Jotain hassua ehkä tapahtuu kuvan ulkopuolella, mutta kissa on sitä mieltä, että oikeastaan hänen on ihan hyvä olla tässä. Ehkä on kuitenkin syytä olla hiukan varuillaan. Tätä linopiirrosta tehdessä opin ainakin sen, että kun kaivertaa kuvan ääriviivat suoraan linolevylle, ne näkyvät. Jos ne ääriviivat haluaa piiloon, kannattaa ne tehdä kynällä. Kuvan koko on vain 15 x 10 cm.

In a series of small linocuts of cats and dogs, this cat now appeared: "Actually feeling funny!" Something funny might be happening outside the picture, but the cat thinks that it's actually quite good for him to be here. However, perhaps it is worth being a little cautious. While making this linocut, I learned at least that when you carve the outlines of the image directly onto the lino plate, they will show. If you want to hide those outlines, you should make them with a pencil. The size of the picture is only 15 x 10 cm.

"ÄLÄ MUA SYYTÄ!" / "DON'T BLAME ME!"

 Uusi pieni linopiirros koirasta on "Älä mua syytä!". Koira katsoo lata kulmiensa ehkä isäntäänsä tai emäntäänsä. Ei oikein kai uskalla katsoa suoraan silmiin. Mutta mistä koiraa syytetään? Onko lattialla lätäkkö koiran vieressä vai onko joulukuusi kaatunut? Tämä lino on osa sarjaani pieniä koira ja kissoja, vain 15 x 10 cm.

A new small linocut of a dog is called "Don't Blame Me!". The dog is looking at its master or mistress with its furrowed brows. He doesn't really dare to look directly in the eyes. But what is the dog accused of? Is there a puddle on the floor next to the dog or has the Christmas tree fallen over? This lino is part of my series of small dogs and cats, only 15 x 10 cm.

"Surullinen kissa" / "Sad Cat" on nimeltään tämä N. Fujiin valokuva. Vaalea pörröinen kissa makaa tyynyllä, korvat pitkin päätä, silmät alakuloisina ja suu mutrussa. Hänet on jätetty yksin. Tai hänellä ei ole leikkikaveria. Olisiko ruoka lopussa? Mustavalkoisen valokuvan voima on seinällä olevassa kuvassa mustasta kissasta, jonka silmät kiiluvat hiukan uhkaavina. Se nyt ei ainakaan lohduta pientä surullista kissaa.

"Sad Cat" is the name of this photograph by N. Fujii. A pale fluffy cat is lying on a pillow, ears along the head, eyes downcast and mouth closed. He has been left alone. Or he doesn't have a playmate. Would we run out of food? The power of the black and white photo is in the picture of a black cat on the wall, whose eyes gleam in a slightly menacing way. At least that doesn't comfort the little sad cat.

NE TUMMUVAT, NE SAMMUVAT / THEY DARKEN, THEY TURN OFF

 Iso työ revontulista Pispalan ja Pyynikin yllä taitaa olla nyt valmis. Se sai nimen Ilmari Kiannon runosta: "Ne tummuvat, ne sammuvat, ne repeävät kuin jää". Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan taloineen ja Pyynikin näkötorneineen. Taivas ja revontulet ovat pehmeää pastellia. Kaksi tikkaa yläkulmissa ovat linopiirroksia, ja päät pon väritetty punaisiksi käsin. Perspektiiviistäö tässä kuvassa ei taida olla mitään jälkeä. Alaosan oikeassa reunassa lentää kotka, mutta tikat ovat ylhäällä suhteessa paljon suurempia. Ja revontuletkaan eivät yleensä ole noin korkeita. Mutta minäkö siitä välittäisin - no en! Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm.

The big work on the northern lights above Pispala and Pyynikki seems to be finished now. It got its name from Ilmari Kianto's poem: "They darken, they turn off, they crack like ice". In the lower part, there is a linocut with Pispala's houses and Pyynikki's ob servation tower. The sky and northern lights are soft pastel. The two woodpeckers in the upper corners are linocuts, and their heads are colored red by hand. There doesn't seem to be any trace of perspective in this picture. An eagle is flying on the right edge of the lower part, but the woodpeckers are proportionally much larger at the top. And the northern lights are usually not that high either. But I wouldn't care - well, I don't! The size of the picture is 50 x 60 cm.

KISSA RUSKEASSA PAHVILAATIKOSSA / CAT IN A BROWN CARDBOARD BOX

 Jokunen vuosi sitten tein pienen 15 x 10 linopiirroksen kissasta pahvilaatikossa. Se oli kokonaan mustalla värillä painettu. Minusta se tuntui liian tummalta, kissa ei erottunut laatikosta. Jossain välissä sitten leikkasin sen veitsellä kolmeen osaan:tausta, laatikko ja kissan pää. Tavoite oli vedostaa laatikko ruskeana ja tausta sekä kissa mustana. Halusin aika vaalean pahvilaatikon värisen ruskean ja ajattelin lisätä ruskeaan väriini extenderiä. Mutta ei ihan tainnut mennä nappiin. En saanut aikaan tasaista väriä, siine tuli viivoja tai sitten väri meni ihan liian vaaleksi ja epätasaiseksi. Onkohan extender kuitenkaan ratkaisu tähän ideaan? Takaisin piirustupöydälle.

Some years ago I made a small 15 x 10 linocut of a cat in a cardboard box. It was printed entirely in black. I thought it was too dark, the cat didn't stand out from the box. Somewhere in between, I cut it with a knife into three parts: the background, the box and the cat's head. The goal was to print the box brown and the background and the cat black. I wanted a fairly light cardboard box-colored brown and I thought of adding some extender to my brown color. But it didn't seem to work. I couldn't achieve an even color, there were lines or the color was too pale and uneven. But is the Extender the solution to this idea at all? Back to the drawing board.

TIKAT TAIVAALLE / WOODPECKERS INTO THE SKY

 

Kaksi isoa tikkaa lensi taivaalle pastellirevontulien joukkoon. Tikat ovat linopiirroksia, ja niiden päät pitää vielä maalata punaiseksi.

Two large woodpeckers flew into the sky among the pastel aurora lights. The woodpeckers are linocuts, and their heads still need to be painted red.

TARJA RINTA & ESA LEPPÄNEN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

 Art Pispala - galleria/kehystämössä Tampereella aukesi Tarja Rinnan ja Esa Leppäsen naivistinen taidenäyttely "Pläjäys". Näyttely on auki tammikuun 2024 loppuun asti. Tässä näyttelyssä näkee uusinta todellista suomalaista naivismia. Värit ovat kirkkaita, aiheet kotoisia tai hauskoja. Akryylimaalaukset on tehty todennäkökisesti aika nopeasti, iloisen luomisen tilassa. Esa Leppänen on myös kehystänyt omat työnsä. Näyttelyssä näkee myös muutaman Leppäsen romumetalliveistoksen. Niitä hän tuntuu luovan nyt hektiseen tahtiin. Kännykkääni tarttui molempien naivistien seiniltä kuvia, joissa on kissa ja myös yksi kana. Tapasin näyttelyssä myös tutun naivistin Hannu Hirsivuoren (alla kuvassa Esa Leppäsen kanssa). Tähän naivistiseen piristysruiskeeseen sopi hyvä se, että gallerian nurkassa nojasi seinään lattialla suomalaisen naivismin "esi-isän" Martti Innasen (1931-2014) aika tumma maalaus vuodelta 2012: " Raivoisan rengin haamu ilmestyy keskiyöllä suomalaisessa kauhuelokuvassa".

Tarja Rinta's and Esa Leppänen's naïve art exhibition "Pläjäys" / "Blast" opened at Art Pispala - gallery/framing shop in Tampere. The exhibition is open until the end of January 2024. In this exhibition you can see the latest real Finnish naive art. The colors are bright, the subjects familiar or funny. The acrylic paintings were probably done quite quickly, in a state of joyful creation. Esa Leppänen has also framed his own works. In the exhibition you can also see a few of Leppänen's scrap metal sculptures. He seems to be creating them at a hectic pace now. Pictures of a cat and also one chicken stuck to my cell phone from the walls of both naïve artists. At the exhibition I also met the familiar naive artist Hannu Hirsivuori (pictured below with Esa Leppänen). That in the corner of the gallery there was a rather dark painting by Martti Innanen (1931-2014), the "ancestor" of Finnish naive art, from the year 2012: "The ghost of a raging farm worker appears at midnight in a Finnish horror film" was a good match for this naïve art boost.

"SAISINKO NAMIA?" / CAN I HAVE A TREAT, PLEASE?"

 Tein uuden version aiemmasta linopiirrroksesta "Olisko jo ruoka-aika?". Aiempi koira näytti jotenkin liian karvaiselta kun olin kaivertanut valkoiset kohdat viivoina. Teinkin uuden suunnitelman puhelimen kuvankäsittelyllä lisäämällä yhtenäisempiä valkoisia kohtia koiran turkkiin. Nyt taidan olla tyytyväinen tähän graafisempaan versioon anelevasta koirasta. Nimeksi tuli "Saisinko namia?".

I made a new version of the previous linocut "Is it time to eat yet?". The previous dog looked somehow too hairy when I had carved the white spots as lines. I made a new plan with the phone's image processing, adding more uniform white spots to the dog's fur. Now I think I'm happy with this more graphic version of the begging dog. It is called "Can I Have a Treat, Please?".

Kolme kissaa tuijottaa tarkkaavaisesti kolmea punaista kalaa. Kalat uivat lasimaljassan kuin akvaariossa. Kissa voisi ihan hyvin ulottua nappaamaan yhden kalan maljasta jos vain uskaltaisi kastella tassunsa. Mutta jännittäväähän on vain katsella kalojen liikkeitä. Taustan tapettikin on kauniisti maalattu, samoin kissojen turkit ja ilmeet. Maalaus on Horatio Henry Coulderyn  (1832–1918) "Kalastusseurue / The Fishing Party". Couldery oli englantilainen taiteilija, tunnettu kissa- ja koira-aiheistaan ja samat kissat toistuivat hänen maalauksissaan aika usein.

Three cats are staring intently at three red fish. The fish swim in a glass bowl like in an aquarium. The cat could very well  grab one fish from the bowl if she only dared to get her paws wet. But the most exciting thing is just watching the movements of the fish. The wallpaper in the background is also beautifully painted, as are the cats' fur and expressions. The painting is "The Fishing Party" by Horatio Henry Couldery (1832–1918). Couldery was an English artist, known for his cat and dog subjects, and the same cats were repeated quite often in his paintings.
