KESÄN NÄYTTELYT AUKEAVAT / SUMMER EXHIBITION OPENING

Kesän taidenäyttelyt aukeavat kesäkuun alussa koronapandemian rajoituksin, mutta aukeavat kuitenkin. Eipä olisi tätä uskonut maaliskuun lopulla. Näissä näyttelyssä olen mukana, linopiirroksia, kortteja, keittiöpyyhkeitä ja pikatatuointejakin. Ensimmäisenä aukeaa Varkaudessa Väinölän  taidekeskus 1.6.2020. Seuraavana päivänä 2.6. avautuu Interiry:n kesäpuoti Runebergin  mökissa Haiharassa. Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyn ovet avataan 4.6. ja sisään pääsee kerralla 30 henkilöä. Nyt jännitetään, miten ihmiset uskaltavat liikkua kesän aikana ja kiinnostaako taide koronan jälkeen. Toivotaan parasta!

Summer´s art exhibitions are opening at the beginning of June with the restrictions of Coronavirus pandemic, but still they are opening. Who could have believed at the end of March. I´m participating in these exhibitions with linocuts, cards, kitchen towels and even instant tattoos. First to open is Väinölä Art Center in Varkaus at 1st of June. The next day 2nd of June will open Interi´s summer shop at the Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara. Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition will open its doors at 4th of June, and there will be only 30 people inside at a time. It´s exciting to see now how people dare to move during the summer and are they interested in art after corona. Let´s hope the best!

NÄYTTÖTILA KORONA-AIKANA / SHOWROOM AT CORONA TIMES

Yleensä etenkin Pispala-linoista kiinnostuneet taidetta hankkivat henkilöt ovat käyneet ostoksilla työhuoneellani. Siellä on yksi seinä täynnä Pispala-aiheisia linopiirroksia ja töiden valinta on  helppoa. Työhuone on kuitenkin niin pieni, että lähikontaktien välttäminen ei onnistu. Keinot kuitenkin keksitään aina! Olen nyt käyttänyt koronapandemian  aikana "näyttötilana" kodin lasikuistia. Sinne on helppo levitellä muutama asiakasta mahdollisesti kiinnostava työ. Itse olen sitten ulkona lasiseinän takana ja kommunikointi sujuu näinkin. Toivon vaan, ettei satu satamaan!

Usually people who are acquiring art and especially Pispala-themed linocuts have been shopping at my work room. I have there a whole wall full of Pispala-themed linos and choosing a work is easy. My studio is so small that avoiding physical contacts is impossible. But the means are always invented! I have used my home´s glazed porch as a "showroom" during the Coronavirus pandemic. It´s easy to spread a few works that might interest the client. I have then myself been standing outside behind the glass wall, and the communication goes smoothly. I just hope that it does not rain!

YÖLENTO / NIGHT FLIGHT

Linnut lentävät yöllä yli Pispalan harjun. Tämä kuva on toinen tällainen isomman kokoinen (70 x 40 cm) lino-pastellipiirros. Ensimmäinen oli Kultainen kuu, jossa harakat lensivät myös yli Pispalan. Tämä aiempi työ on esillä Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttelyssä 2020, josta se on jo myyty. Tässä uudessa työssä on mukana uusia linoleimasimia linnuista: tiainen, rastas ja kolibri. Pispalan yllä ei koskaan ole nähty kolibria eikä edes kuningaskalastajaa. Mutta kuka kieltää kuvittelemasta.  Kaikkein pienimmät lintuleimasimet lisäsin ihan oikealla leimasivärillä, ja sehän toimii ihan hyvin.

Birds are flying at night over the ridge of Pispala. This picture is the second one of these bigger sized (70 x 40 cm) linocut & pastel drawings. The first one was Golden Moon, which had magpies flying also over Pispala. This earlier work is now exhibited at the Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition 2020, and it´s already sold. This new work contains new linocut stamps of birds: a tit, thrush and hummingbird. A hummingbird has never been seen over Pispala, not even a kingfisher bird. But who can forbid me of imagining. I added the tiniest bird stamps with real stamp ink, and it works quite all right.

Ruotsalaisen Ann Nyströmin kissakortti näyttää ensin mustavalkoiselta. Mutta kun sitä katsoo lähemmin, siinä on erivärisiä harmaita, beigeä ja vaalenvihreää kissan silmissä. Kuvan graafinen ilme on hyvin selkeä ja pelkistetty. Kuitenkin siitä välittyy tuo kissalle niin tyypillinen katse, jotakin kiinnostavaa tapahtuu mutta varuillaan on kuitenkin syytä olla.

This cat card by Swedish Ann Nyström seems to black and white at the first glance. But when you inspect it closer, there are different shades of gray, beige and light green on the cat´s eyes. The graphic image of the picture is very clear and reduced. Still, you can sense that look very typical for the cats, something interesting is happening but it´s still advisable to be on one's guard.

Linnut tekevät yölennon yli Pispalan  harjun. Linnut ovat pieniä linopiirroksia. Suurimmat niistä ovat noin 10 x 10 cm ja pienet parin sentin kokoisia. Vasta nyt keksin käyttää kehyspahvia pastellitaivaan rajauksena, kivet painona. Aiemmin käytin teippiä, jolla rajasin kuvan, mutta teippiä oli hankala irrottaa ilman että siihen tarttui pohjapaperia.

Birds are making a night flight over the ridge of Pispala. The birds are small linocuts. The bigger ones are about 10 x 10 cm and the smaller only a couple of centimeters. Just now I worked out that I could use a passe partout to border the pastel sky, pressed by two stones. I used earlier tape to border the picture, but the tape was tricky to remove without tearing some of the picture paper.

Pispalan ylle tulee nyt aika tumma, syvänsininen taivas Pas Pastel-pastelliväreillä. Värejä on ihana sekoittaa sormilla ja useaan kerrokseen. Yläosa taivasta jää vaaleammaksi, sillä sinne suunnittelen lintuja.

There is going to be quite a dark, deep blue sky over Pispala with Pan Pastel colours. It´s lovely to mix colours with fingers and on several layers. The upper part of the sky will remain lighter, because I`m planning to add there some birds.

Aloittelen uutta isomman kokoista (70 x 40 cm)  linopiirros-pastellityötä, johon tulee Pispalanäkymän lisäksi iso kuu ja lintuja. Aion nyt käyttää uusia isompia linoleimasimiani tiaisesta, rastaasta ja kolibrista. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta ja taustalla näkyy järvi. Oranssi kuu on aika matalalla järven päällä. Tästä tulee varmaan aika dramaattinen kuva.

I´m starting a new bigger (70 x 40 cm) linocut & pastel work with a scene of Pispala, a big moon and birds. I´m going to use now my new linocut stamps of larger birds, a tit, thrush and hummingbird. At the bottom there is a linocut of the ridge of Pispala and in the background you can  see a lake. The orange moon is quite low over the lake. Surely this will be quite a dramatic picture.

ILOISIA UUTISIA IITTALASTA / GOOD NEWS FROM IITTALA

Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttely aukeaa 4.6.2020, kun koronatilanne sen nyt sallii. Näyttely on jo ripustettu seinille, noin 600 teosta. Yleisöä on jo päässyt tutustumaan ennakkovarauksissa hyvin pienissä ryhmissä, Nyt olen parilta taholta saanut tietoa, että kaksi teosta on jo myyty! Ulla Heinonen Iittalasta lähetti Facebookissa kuvan näyttelyn pystytyksestä, ja tunnistin omien teosteni paikan, alakerran viimeisen huoneen kulmauksessa. Suoraan kuvassa näkyvä lino-pastellityö "Kultainen kuu" on nyt myyty. Kuva on varmaan myös Ulla Heinosen  ottama. Sitten näin Instagramissa kaverini @jlepispala postauksen näyttelyseinästäni, jossa näkyi neljä työtä. Niistä "Perhosten karkelot" näyttää olevan myyty. Näyttelyhän on lähtenyt hienosti liikkeelle, ja siihen on varmaan vaikuttanut ihmisten kaipaus taiteen pariin. Minä ainakin olen asiasta iloinen!

Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition will open 4th of June/2020 when the Corona virus situation now allows it. The exhibition has been hung already, about 600 art works on the walls. Some of the public has already seen the exhibition via advance bookings in very small groups. Now I have got information from a couple of acquaintances that two of my works has already been sold! Ulla Heinonen from Iittala sent in the Facebook a photo about the hanging the exhibition, and I recognized the place of my own works, at the corner of the last room downstairs. Straight in the photo is my lino & pastel work "Golden Moon" is now sold. The photo was taken by Ulla Heinonen, I think. Then I saw a photo of my wall in Instagram by my pal @jlepispala, and there was four of my works. "Butterflies Galore" seems to have been sold. The exhibition has started really fine, and perhaps the reason is people´s longing to art experiences. At least I am happy about this!

LENTÄVÄ KISSA / FLYING CAT

Toinen kissa taivaalle on lentävä kissa. Kuvittelen sen lentää liihottavan isomman kuvan pastellitaivaalla, ehkä kuutamon valossa. Tämäkin on pieni linopiirros (13 x 12 cm), ja voihan sen vedostaa yksinäänkin, ehkä kuvioidulle paperille tai monoprintille.

Second cat for the sky is a flying cat. I imagine it levitating in  a pastel sky of a larger picture, perhaps in the moonlight. This is also a small linocut (13 x 12 cm), and I could of course print it as it is, perhaps on a patterned paper or on a monoprint.

LEIJAILEVA KISSA / HOVERING CAT

 Tämä uusi pieni (8 x 9 cm) linopiirros on tarkoitettu uusiin isompiin sekatekniikkatöihin. Kuvittelen tämän kissan leijumassa pastellitaivaalla, ehkä kuutamossa.

Tunnelma tässä kuvassa on hienostunut, valkoista satiinia naisten puvuissa, valkoisia kukkia taustalla kuin pilvi ja naisen profiilikuva paksuissa kullatuissa kehyksissä. Kummallakin naisella on sylissään musta kissa. Maalaus on vuodelta 1911 ja jälki-impressionismia parhaimmillaan, siveltimen jäljet tuntuvat tanssivan kankaalla. Maalauksen on tehnyt englantilainen Frank Bramley (1857-1915) ja sen nimi on Luottamuksella (Confidences).

The atmosphere in this picture is refined, white satin of the women´s dresses, white flowers in the background like a cloud, and a profile of a woman in thick golden frames. Both women have a black cat in their lap. The painting is from the year 1911 and post-impressionism at its best, the brush markings seem to dance on the canvas. The painting Confidences was made by English  Frank Bramley (1857-1915).

KIITÄJÄ / HAWKMOTH

Toinen uusi pieni (10 x 13 cm) linopiirrosperhonen on pääkallokiitäjä (Acherontia atropos). Tosin pääkallo ei perhosen selässä näy kovin hyvin, eikä se ainakaan ole kovin pelottava. Kokeilin vedostaa perhosen kuviolliselle paperille.

Second new small (10 x 13 cm) linocut butterfly is a death´s-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos). The death´s head on the back of the butterfly is though not very prominent, and at least it is not frightening. I tested printing the butterfly on a patterned paper.

YÖPERHONEN / MOTH

Tämän  yöperhosen siipien kärkiväli on 14 cm. Tätä linopiirrosta voisi käyttää isommissa sekatekniikkatöissä muiden perhosten kanssa lentämässä taivaalla. Noiden siivissä olevien "silmien" kohdalle kannattaa varmaan lisätä jotain väriä ennen vedostusta.

The wingspan of this moth is 14 cm. I could use this linocut as a part of larger mixed media works flying with other butterflies in the sky. And I could add some colour before printing under the "eyes" on the wings.

RASTAS / THRUSH

Kolmas pieni linopiirros linnusta on rastas, ehkä. Tämäkin on 10 x 10 cm kokoinen ja sormet jo syhyää päästä kokeilemaan tätäkin osana isompaa lino/pastellikuvaa. Aiemmin olen tehnyt tällaisen noin  10 x 10 cm kokoisen linopiirroksen harakasta. Muut lintulinoni ovat paljon pienempiä, ja käytän niitäkin osana lintuparvia. Nämä kolme uusinta lintua ovat selkeämmin jotain lintulajia kun pienistä ei oikein voi sanoa, mitä lintuja ne ovat.

The third small linocut of a bird is a thrush, perhaps. This is also sized 10 x 10 cm, and my fingers are already itching to to get to try this one as a part of a larger lino & pastel picture.I made earlier this kind of bird about 10 x 10 cm of a magpie. My other bird linos have been a lot smaller, and I use them also as a part of flock of birds. These three newer birds are more clearly of a special species of birds when of the smaller ones I could not say what species of birds they are.

TIAINEN / TIT

Toinen pieni linopiirros linnusta on tiainen. Käytän näitä pieniä 10 x 10 cm lintuja osana isompia lino/pastellitöitä. Nämä ovat hiukan kuin leimasimia. Mutta voi pieniä lintuja käyttää sellaisinaankin, etenkin jos vedostaa linon  jollekin kuviopaperille tai yhdistää siihen monografiaa.

The second linocut of a bird is a tit. I use these small 10 x 10 cm birds as a part of larger lino & pastel works. These are a bit like stamps. But I can use small birds as such, especially if I print them on a piece of patterned paper or combine it with a monoprint.

KOLIBRI / HUMMINGBIRD

Lisää lintuja aina tarvitaan! Tein pienen kolibrin linopiirroksena, ehkä tämä ei ole ihan tarkkojen lintubongareiden määritelmien mukainen. Käytän näitä linopiirroksia linnuista ikäänkuin leimasimina isommissa linopiiros/pastellitöissä. Varmaan näitä pieniä lintuja lähtee Naivistit Iigttalassa -kesänäyttelyn aulashoppiinkin vedoksina.

There is always a need for more birds! I made a small linocut of a hummingbird, perhaps this is not quite along the strict definitions of the bird watchers. I use these linocuts of birds as some kind of stamps in larger linocut/pastel works. Surely these small birds will be also on sale as prints at the lobby shop of Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition next summer.

Kaksi neitoperhosta on saanut aikaan kaaosta ikkunalaudalla. Kaksi kissaa tarkkailee perhosia, ja touhussa on jo kaatunut kukkamaljakko. Tässä englantilaisen Lesley Fotherbyn (s. 1946) maalauksessa "Burmankissat ja perhoset" on paljon mestarillisia yksityiskohtia, joista pidän: kissojen kiiltävät turkit, isot vihreät kasvin lehdet, tuolin karmille heitetty raitainen paita, pikkukuvioinen verho, klematiksen nuput ikkunan ulkopuolella ja upeat siniharmaat pilvet.

Two peacock butterflies are bringing about chaos on the windowsill. Two cats are on the watch of butterflies, and in the hassle a vase is already toppled over. There are a lot of masterly details in this painting by English Lesley Fotherby (s. 1946) called "Burmese and Butterflies" that I like: the shining furs of the cats, big green plant leaves, a striped shirt tossed on a frame of a chair, little patterns on the curtain, clematis buds outside the window and the glorious blue-gray clouds.

TÄYSIKUU WAROUXIN LINNAN YLLÄ / FULL MOON OVER THE CASTLE OF WAROUX

Linnut Warouxin linnan yllä on nyt valmis. Kuvan alaosa, kuu ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Taivas on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Aikomukseni on lähettää tämä kuva syksyn naivistiseen näyttelyyn Warouxin linnassa syys-lokakuussa. Koronapandemia asettaa tietenkin omat ehtonsa - saa nähdä totautuuko näyttely. Joka tapauksessa Corinne Delhaye jo organisoi näyttelyä Belgiassa ja uskoo, että ovet avataan 11.9.2020.

Birds over the Castle of Waroux is now ready. The bottom part of the picture and the birds and moon are all linocuts. The sky was done with soft pastels. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. My aim to send the picture to a Naïve Art group exhibition at the Waroux Castle in September - October. Of course the coronavirus pandemic set its own conditions - let´s see if the exhibition will happen at all. In any case, Corinne Delhaye is already organizing the exhibition in Belgium and she believes that the exhibition will open September, 11/2020.

Linopiirros/pastellityöhön Warouxin linnasta ilmestyi parvi lintuja taivaalle. Nämä eri kokoiset linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Nyt oivalsin, että pienimmät linnut, jotka ovat kuin leimasimia, voi painaa kuvaan leimasinvärillä. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

A flock of birds appeared in the sky on the linocut & pastel work of the Castle of Waroux, These different sized birds are linocuts. Now I detected that the smallest of the birds that are kind of stamps can be printed with stamp ink colour/pad. The size of the picture is 50 x 20 cm.

Tämä kortti on joskus vuosia sitten ostettu Lontoon Imperial War Museumista. Kortin nimi on "Laivakissa omassa riippumatossaan" ("A ship´s cat in its hammock") ja kortti kuuluu sarjaan "Eläimiä sodassa". Sotaisesta aiheestaan huolimatta kuva on hellyyttävä. Kissalle on tehty oma riippumatto ja kaksi tyynyäkin. Näyttää siltä, että kissa tosiaan ottaa nokoset riippumatossaan, joka varmaan keinuu aaltojen mukaan nukuttavasti edestakaisin kuin kehto.

This card has been bought many years ago visiting London at the War Museum. The name of the card is "A ship´s cat in its hammock", and the card is one of the series "Animals at War". Despite its belligerence subject the picture is adorable. They have made her own  hammock for the cat and even two pillows. It seems that the cat really is taking a nap in  its hammock, which surely is swinging sleepy back and forth according to the waves like a cradle.

Linopiirros Warouxin linnasta sai ylleen suuren oranssin kuun, joka on myös linopiirros. Kuun ympärille syntyi pehmeillä pastelliväreillä tumman sininen taivas. Taivaanranta on dramaattisen punainen.

My linocut of the Castle of Waroux got a big orange moon over it. The moon is also a linocut. Around the moon I made a dark blue sky with soft pastels. The horizon  is dramatic red.

Mikä hieno ääni se onkaan kun levittää telalla musteen linopiirrokselle ja lopuksi nostaa vedostetun arkin irti musteesta! Vedostin linon Warouxin linnasta isomman paperiarkin alaosaan ja jätin yläosan rajauksen pois. Nyt on tilaa tehdä pastelliväreillä taivas linnan ylle.
Mitähän siihen  ilmestyy?

What a fine voice it is when spreading ink on a linocut with a roller and finally lifting a printed piece of paper away from  the ink! I printed my lino of the Waroux Castle at the bottom of a larger paper and left the border of the upper part away. Now there is space to make a sky with pastel colours over the castle. What ever might there be?
