Tämä pieni linopiirros kissasta kirjahyllyssä näytti tukkoiselta mustavalkoisena. Siinä oli ihan liikaa kuvioita ja muotoja, kirjat eivät erottuneet kunnolla. Väritin käsin kuvan kahdella ei ruskealla sävyllä. Nyt mielestäni kissa erottuu kunnolla kirjojen keskeltä. Linopiirros on pieni, vain 10 x 15 cm. ************ This small linocut of a cat in a bookcase looked quite blocked as a black and white print. There were far too much patterns and shapes, the books didn't stand out properly. I hand coloured the picture with two brown hues. Now I think the cat is standing out in the bookcase. The linocut is small, only 10 x 15 cm.

Väritin käsin pienen linopiirrokseni kissasta viulukotelossa. Viulukotelo on nyt ruskea. Tässä pienessä 10 x 15 cm linopiirroksessa oli niin paljon erilaisia muotoja, että kuva näytti mustavalkoisena tukkoiselta. Nyt väritys tuo kotelon ja kissan muodot paremmin esille. ************* I hand coloured my small linocut of a cat in a violin case. The violin case is now brown. There are so many different shapes in this small 10 x 15 cm linocut, that it looked blocked as a black and white version. Now the colouring brings out better the shapes of the cat and violin case.
Tämä kissakortti on onnittelukortti työtovereiltani Marikilta, Impiltä ja Teuvolta joskus 1980-luvulla kun sain jonkinlaisen ylennyksen kirjastourallani. "Onnnellista oloa opiskelunneuvojalle!" Amerikkalaisen Thaddeus Krumeichin (1930-1988) kuvassa on hylly, jossa ei ole yhtään kirjaa. Sitä vastoin hyllyillä on viittauksia matkoihin, juna, laiva ja asema sekä korttitalo, marmorikuulia, avaimia ja laatikoita. Ruskearaitainen kissa alahyllyllä näyttää aika päättäväiseltä punaisessa kaulanauhassaan. ****************** This cat card is a greeting card from my work mates Marikki, Impi ja Teuvo sometimes in the 1980´s when I got some kind of a promotion in my library career. " Happy Returns to the student adviser!" There is a shelf in the picture by American Thaddeus Krumeich (1930-1988), but there are no books. In contrast on the shelves there are hints to travels, a train, train station, boat and a house of cards, marbles, keys and drawers. A brown-striped cat on the bottom shelf looks quite strong-minded wearing her red choker.
Naivistisen taiteen talvinäyttely Iittalassa alkaa pian olla valmis ripustettavaksi seinille. Vein Iiittalaan omia linopiirroksiani, joista kolme (Kissojen yö lino/pastelli, Lentävä matto ja Pispala-aihe) ehkä tulevat näyttelyseinälle, ja aika paljon tavaraa aulashoppiin: joulukortteja, 2020 kalentereita, pikatatuointeja, keittiöpyyhkeitä ja kehystettyjä pieniä linopiirroksia. Ulla Heinonen oli ottamassa vastaan teoksia, joita tässä viikonvaihteessa tulee näyttelyyn aikamoinen määrä. Ihastelin Stina Engvallin maalauksia ja hauskoja puukaappeja, muut vielä piilottelivat paketeissaan. Puukoulun yläkertaan on tulossa Pirkko Valon (1934-2018) muistonäyttely. Työt ovat aika mystisiä, maagisia, usein eläinaiheita. Koskettava oli Seppo Tammisen (Pirkko Valon aviomiehen ja viime vuoden erikoisnäyttelyn tekijän) kuva kivisestä saaresta, jossa ehkä juuri hän vaimoineen on telttaretkellä). Talvinäyttelyyn on tulossa myös erikoisnäyttely Kansainväliset naivistiystävykset (Asta Pulkkinen ja naivistiystävä Japanista) sekä kokoelma Tarja Polarin maalauksia. Monet kurssit ja tapahtumat ryydittävät näyttelyä talven mittaan 16.11.2019 - 31.3.2020.
*************** The Naïve Art Winter Exhibition in Iittala will soon be ready for hanging on the walls. I took to Iittala my linocuts, of which perhaps three (The Night of The Cats, Flying Carpet and a Pispala theme) will be on the wall at the exhibition. In addition I took rather a lot of material to the Lobby Shop: Christmas cards, 2020 calendars, instant tattoos, kitchen towels and small framed linocuts. Ulla Heinonen was at the school building receiving art works, and there will be a lot of them there on this weekend. I admired Stina Engvall´s paintings and fun small wooden cupboards, the rest of material were still in their packages. Pirkko Valo's (1934-2018) memorila exhibition will be on the upstairs rooms of the wooden school building. Her works are mystical, magical and often animal subjects. Seppo Tamminen's (last year's artist of a memorial exhibition and the husband of Pirkko Valo) painting of a rocky small island where he probably is camping with his wife was touching. In this winter exhibition there will also be a special exhibition International Naivist Friends (Asta Pulkkinen and her Japanese Naïve Art friend), and also a collection of Tarja Polari's paintings. Many courses and happenings are giving extra spice to this Winter exhibition between 16/112019 - 31/3/2020.
Kissojen yö - sekatekniikkatyö on nyt valmis. Viimeisenä vedostin neljä kissa-linopiirrosta pastellitaivaalle. Kahdella isommalla kissalla on kultaiset takajalat. Tämä 50 x 30 cm kokoinen työ on nyt lähdössä Naivisitit Iittalassa -talvinäyttelyyn, joka aukeaa 16.11.2019. ************ The mixed media work The Night of the Cats is now ready. Lastly I printed four linocuts of cats on the pastel sky. Two bigger cats have golden back feet. This picture sized 50 x 30 cm is now on its way to Naïve Artists in Iittala Winter Exhibition which is opening 16/11/2019.
Syksy tulee ja illat pimenevät. Synkkien pilvien lomassa yötaivaalla voi nähdä kissojen tanssivan. Tässä uudessa 50 x 30 cm kokoisessa sekatekniikkatyössä on linopiirros Pispalasta alaosassa ja linopiirroksia kissoista yläosan pastellitaivaalla. Tässä Pispala-linossa on myös puuhuussi. Oranssi naurava kuu on myös linopiirros. Vedostin ensin alaosan ja sitten kuun. Peitin kuun muovikalvolla, jotta en sotkisi sitä. Tein muovikalvosta sapluunat kissalinoille. Sitten tein taivaan pastelliväreillä, pääasiassa Pan-pastelleilla. Kun irrotin sapluunat, jäi kissalinoille valkoiset paikat. ************* The autumn is coming and the nights are getting darker. Among the gloomy clouds on the night sky you can see cats dancing. There is a linocut of Pispala on the bottom part of this new 50 x 30 cm mixed media work and linocut cats on the pastel sky above. In this Pispala lino there is also a wooden outhouse. The orange moon is also linocut. I printed at first the bottom part and then the moon. I covered moon with a plastic sheet so that I would not get it dirty. I also made stencils of plastic sheet for the cats. Then I made the sky with pastel colours, mainly with Pan pastels. When I took away the stencils, there are now white spots for the cat linos.
Linopiirroksesta burmankissa Dottista oli alkujaan tarkoitus tehdä vain joulukortti, mutta projekti laajenikin. Dotti-kissalle kertyi pino hattuja: kudottu myssy, fetsi, cowboy-hattu, turbaani ja kukkahattu. Mutta sain sitten aikaa myös sen joulukortin tai oikeastaan kaksi. Toisessa kortissa Dottilla on punainen joulumyssy. Toinen kortti on hiukan hurjempi, siinä on käsin väritetyt silmät ja digitaalisesgti väritetty sininen taivas tähtineen. ************ I planned originally to make only a Christmas card of the linocut of Dotti the Burmese cat, but the project expanded. Suddenly Dotti had a stack of hats: knitted cap, fez, cowboy hat, turban and flower hat. But then I also managed to get printed a Christmas card or actually two cards. On the other card Dotti has a red Christmas cap. The other one is a bit wilder, it has hand painted eyes and digitally coloured sky and stars.
Vedostin siniselle pastellitaivaalle parven linopiirros-lintuja. Osa linnuista on harmaita ja osa mustia, yritin näin saada parveen syvyyttä. Minusta se onnistui. Viimeiseksi vedostin kuvaan pyöreän linopiirroksen. Kuvittelin sen olevan aurinko. Mutta ehkä se onkin kuu, juuri sillä hetkellä kun taivaanrannassa on vielä auringonkajoa, mutta kuu on noussut. Kuva on aika iso 50 x 30 cm. ************ I printed a flock of linocut birds on the pastel sky. Some of the birds are gray and some are black. I tried to achieve some depth. I think it worked. At last i printed a round linocut on the picture. I imagined it to be a sun. But perhaps it is after all a moon, just at the moment when there is still a bit of sun reflected on the horizon, but the moon has risen. The picture is quitre big: 50 x 30 cm.
Annukka Grönlundin (s. 1941) naivistisessa maalauksessa "Välilasku" vuodelta 1994 on jonkinlainen ristiriita. Isopäisen raitaisen kissan (tai tiikerin) ilme on hapan, tyrmistynyt. Kissan selkään on laskeutunut neljä pientä enkeliä, jotka kaikki hymyilevät autuaasti. Ihmetteleekö kissaeläin vain sitä, mitä hänen selässään oikein on. Nämä Grönlundin maalauksissa esiintyvät enkelit tuntuvat usein olevan elollisille olennoille näkymättömiä. **************** There is some kind of conflict in Annukka Grönlund's (b. 1941) Naïve Art painting "Stopover" from 1994. The expression on the face of a striped cat (or tiger) is sour, thunderstruck. Four small angels are landed on his back, and they are all smiling blissfully. Is the feline only wondering what is actually on his back. These angels appearing in Grönlund's paintings seem often to be invisible for human eyes.
Aloitin uuden linopiirros & pastellityön, jossa kuvan alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan taloista. Kuvan yläosaan tulee parvi lintuja sinisellä taivaalla. Linnut tulevat myös olemaan linopiirroksia. Tein leivinpaperista sapluunaan, jolla pystyn hiukan mallintamaan, miten linnut oikein mahtuvat parveensa. ************ I started a new linocut 6 pastel work, where there is a linocut of Pispala houses at the bottom. There will be a flock of birds flying on blue sky on the upper part of the picture. The birds will also be linocuts. I made a stencil of baking paper, so that I could model a bit how the birds actually fit into their flock.
Tämä oli hauska projekti. Tein sarjan Dotti-kissasta erilaisissa hatuissa. Inspiraationa tähän hankkeeseen oli kuvat, joita näin Instagram-kaverini Louise Stuartin (@miffysworld) postauksissa. Dotti on burmankissa, joka asuu Australiassa. Dotti ei ole mikään söpön näköinen eläin, ilme on hiukan crumpy-kissan tapainen, tyypillinen kai burmankissalle. Ensin ajattelin vain tehdä Dottin punaisessa kudotussa myssyssä joulukortiksi. Mutta sitten huomasin, että linopiirrokset kissasta ja hatusta voi tehdä erillisinä ja yhdistää vasta vedostusvaiheessa. Näin voin tehdä Dottille useita erilaisia hattuja. Tein kustakin hatusta sapluunan vedostaessani kissalinoa, näin jäi puhdas tila kullekin hatulle. Ja sitten vedostin hatun tai hatut. Näitä syntyi yksitellen - tähän mennessä viisi erilaista hattua: kudottu myssy (punaisena ja vihreänä), fetsi, cowboy-hattu, turbaani ja kukkahattu. Uusiakin voi vielä syntyä, viikinkikypärää on ehdotettu. Dottin silmät on väritetty dramaattisiksi käsin, samoin joitain yksityiskohtia hatuissa. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm.

This was a fun project. I made a series of Dotti the cat wearing different hats. The inspiration for this project were the photos, which I saw in postings by my Instagram friend Louisa Stuart (@miffysworld). Dotti is a Burmese cat living in Australia. Dotti is not a very cutesy looking animal, the expression is a bit like the grumpy cat, typical for a Burmese cat I guess. At first I thought that I just make Dotti in a red knitted cap for a Christmas card. But then I noticed that I could make the linocuts of the cat and the hat separate and combine them when printing. This way I could make several hats for Dotti. I made a stencil of every hat when printing the cat, so i got a clean space for each hat. And then I printed the hat or hats. These were made one by one - till now five different hats: a knitted cap (red and green), fez, cowboy hat, turban and flower hat. There might be still more, a viking helmet is suggested. The dramatic eyes of Dotti are hand coloured as are some details in the hats. The size of the picture is 15 x 15 cm. Mies tuo löytökissaa matkalaukussa eläinsuojeluyhdistykseen tässä mustavalkoisessa valokuvakortissa 1940-luvulta, jonka kuvaaja on tuntematon. Kuvaaja on osunut paikalle juuri sillä hetkellä kun kissa karkaa matkalaukusta. Onko tämä hyvä asia: kissa pääsee vapauteen? Vai onko tämä huono juttu: kissaa ei pelastetakaan? ************ A man is bringing a cat in a suitcase to the Animal Rescue League in this black and white photo card of an unknown photographer from the 1940´s. The taker of the picture has hit the spot just at the moment when the cat escapes from the suitcase. Is this a good thing: the cat is released to the freedom? Or is this a bad thing: the cat will not be rescued?
Kulttuuritalo Laikussa on jälleen yksi näyttely, jonka taiteilijasta en ole koskaan kuullutkaan. Grafiikka ja piirrokset on tehnyt virolainen Eduard Wiiralt (1898-1954), kotimaassaan erittäin arvostettu taiteilija. Yksi kokonaisuus oli kuvia alastomista naisista ja toinen Jeesuksesta ja pyhimyksistä. Minua miellyttivät muut työt. Yksityiskohtien määrä kuvissa on hengästyttävä, tunnelmassa jotain hiukan surrealistista, groteskiakin. Tekniikka sekä etsauksissa, muussa grafiikassa ja pastelli tai lyijykynäpiirroksissa on upea. Mieleen tulee 1920- ja 1930-lukujen berlliniläinen taideyhteisö, erityisesti George Grosz. ***********
There is at Laikku an art exhibition of an artists I have never heard before. The graphics and drawings are by Estonian Eduard Wiiralt (1898-1954), a very valued artist in his homeland. One set consisted of pictures of naked women and another one of Jesus and saints. I was interested in his other works. The amount of details in the pictures is staggering, the atmosphere some kind of Surrealistic, even grotesque. The technique of etchings and other graphics or pastel or pencil drawings is superb. The art scene of Berlin in 1920´2 and 1930´s came to my mind, especially George Grosz.

Neljäs Dotti-kissan hattu on turbaani. Kissa ja hattu ovat kaksi erillistä linopiirrosta. Kissan keltaiset silmät on väritetty käsin, ja ne ovat hurjat Burmankissan kiilusilmät. Samoin turbaani on väritetty käsin. Tein pari hiukan erilaista muunnosta: vihreän ja kirjavan. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm. ************** The fourth hat for Dotti the cat is a turban. The cat and hat are two separate linocuts. The yellow eyes of the cat are hand coloured, and they are fierce glowing eyes of a Burmese cat. The turban is also hand coloured. I made two different version: green and multicolored. The size of the picture is 15 x 15 cm.
Ruskin Spearin (1911-1990) maalauksessa "Brindle Cat" kirjava kissa istuu pöydän takana kuin odottaen aamiaistaan. Kissan ilme on hiukan nyreä: "Missä se lautanen oikein viipyy??" Huomion varastavat kuitenkin punaiset kukat, jotka rönsyilevät maljakosta joka suuntaan.
