KOIRA SEINÄLLÄ / A DOG ON THE WALL

 

Onhan linopiirrokseni koirasta päässyt ihanalle paikalle uuden kotinsa seinällä! Mustavalkoista, viivoja, nappeja, lasia ja pohjanmaalaista puutyötä. Sohvan selkänojakin on taideteos. Koira vaan tuijottaa hyllylle, josko siellä olisi jotain syötävää.

Goodness me, my linocut of a dog has found a wonderful place on the wall of its new home! Black and white, lines, buttons, glass and Ostrobothnian woodwork. The back of the sofa in itself is a work of art. The dog just stares at the shelf, if there is maybe something to eat.

KOIRILLE JA KISSALLE SILMÄT / EYES FOR TWO DOGS AND A CAT

 

Kahden koiran ja yhden kissan silmät on nyt kaiverrettu. Näissä pienissä 15 x 10 cm linopiirroksissa silmät ovat olennaiset kohdat. Jos niiden kaiverrus olisi mennyt ihan pieleen, olisin heittänyt linot roskiin. On kyllä hiukan vaiakea nähdä näistä lopullista silmien ilmettä kun kaiverrettu lino on peilikuva lopullisesta eli "väärinpäin".

The eyes of two dogs and one cat are now carved. In these small 15 x 10 cm linocuts the eyes are essential points. If their engraving had gone completely wrong, I would have thrown the lino sheets in the trash. It's a bit difficult to see the final expression of these eyes, when the engraved lino is a mirror image of the final one, i.e. "wrong way around".

VOIKUKKAPELTO JA JÄRVENSELKÄ / DANDELION FIELD & ON THE LAKE

 On aina aivan ihanaa saada kuva omasta työstä omassa kodissaan, omassa ympäristössään. Jouluna sain kuvan ystävältäni, ja siinä näkyi joulukuusen takana kaksi aika vanhaa linopiirrostani seinällä: Voikukkapelto ja Järvenselkä. Molemmissa on ennen linopiirroksen vedostusta levitetty akryyliväriä, keltainen tai sininen. Molemnmat on tehty samalla mallilla, isompi osa maisemaa ja alaosassa joku yksityiskohta: voikukka ja vene. Tein tämänmallisia linotöitä aika monta, ehkä kymmenen eri aiheista. Minulle kun tuntuu olevan tyypillistä jonkinlaisten sarjojen teko tai saman aiheen tai mallin toistaminen hiukan varioiden.

It's always wonderful to get a picture of your own work in their own home, in their own environment. At Christmas, I received a picture from my friend, and it showed two of my old linocuts on the wall behind the Christmas tree: Voikukkapelto / Dandelion field and Järvenselkä / On the Lake. Both have acrylic paint, yellow or blue, applied before the linocut is printed. Both are made with the same shape ans size, the bigger part is the landscape and the lower part has some detail: a dandelion and a boat. I made quite a lot of this type of linocuts, maybe ten on different subjects. For me, it seems to be typical to make some kind of series or to repeat the same subject or model with slight variations.

Joulunajan välipäivät - laiskaa aikaa! luonnostelin kolme pientä 15 x 10 cm kokoista koira- ja kissalinoa. Näissä silmät ovat se tärkein piirre. Aionkin kaivertaa ne silmät ensimmäisinä.

The days between Christmas holidays - lazy times! I sketched three small 15 x 10 cm dog and cat linocuts. In these, the eyes are the most important feature. I'm going to carve those eyes first.

Raija Nokkalan (s.1956) naivistisessa asetelmassa kymmenen kissaa on kerääntynyt soikean pöydän ympärille. Keskellä pöytää odottaa syöjiään valtava kala. Aikuisilla on edessään lasillinen pillimehua. Juhla voi alkaa! Tässä voi olla kyse syntymäpäivistä, mutta nehän voivat olla jouluiset Jeesuksen juhlat. Jotenkin asetelma muistuttaa myös Leonardo da Vincin seinämaalausta "Viimeinen ehtoollinen", mutta Nokkalan kuvassa ei näy Juudasta, tunnelma on enemmänkin hilpeä. Nokkalalle tyypilliseen tapaan taulun kehyksetkin on maalattu osaksi kuvaa.

In Raija Nokkala's (b.1956) naive art setting, ten cats have gathered around an oval table. A huge fish is waiting for its eaters in the middle of the table. Adults have a glass of straw juice in front of them. The party can begin! This could be about a birthday, but it could also be Christmas partying the birthday of Jesus. Somehow, the setting also resembles Leonardo da Vinci's  mural "The Last Supper", but Nokkala's picture does not show Judas, the atmosphere is more cheerful. It is typical for Nokkala, the frames of the painting are also painted as part of the picture.

MÖKKIMÄKI / COTTAGE HILL

 Linopiirros ja pastellityö Mökkimäki on valmis. Lisäsin vieläauringoin säteitä veteen. Tämä oli tosi kiva tilaustyö ja nyt sen voi antaa lahjaksi uuteen kotiin. Kuvaan toivottiin isoa mäkeä, jonka päällä on punainen kesämökki, rannassa sauna ja niiden välissä pitkät portaat. Laiturissa on vene ja sinivihertävässä vedessä kaloja. Siinä se! Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm ja se kehystettiin kapeisiin mustiin puukehyksiin. Taulun koko paspeineen on noin 70 x 50 cm. Hyvää joulua itsekullekin muistellen jo kesän mökkirantaa!

Linocut and pastel work Mökkimäki / Cottage Hill is ready. I still added some rays of sun in the water. This was a really nice commissioned work and now it can be given as a gift for a new home. The customer wanted a big hill with a red summer cottage on top, a sauna on the beach and long stairs between them. There is a boat at the pier and fish in the blue-green water. That's it! The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm and it was framed in narrow black wooden frames. The size of the picture including the passepartout is approximately 70 x 50 cm. Merry Christmas to everyone, remembering already the cottage beach of the summer!

VETTÄ MÖKKIMÄKEEN / WATER ON THE COTTAGE HILL

Punaisen kesämökin rannassa lainehtii vesi. Aika matala kivipohjakin näkyy kirkkaana. Ja vedessä ui kaloja. Sijoittelin jo paikoilleen muutaman linopiirroksen kaloista ja pari vesikasvia.  Vesi on pehmeää pastellia, ja teen sen valmiiksi ennen kalojen vedostusta. Kalojen paikalle jätän valkoiset kohdat sapluunojen avulla.

The water ripples on the shore of the red summer cottage. Even the stone floor can be seen clearly when it is quite low. And there are fish swimming in the water. I already placed a few linocuts of fish and a couple of water plants. The water is made with soft pastel, and I draw it before printing the fish. In the place of the fish, I leave the white spots with the help of stencils..

KALOJA MÖKKIMÄKEEN / FISH TO THE COTTAGE HILL

 

Vedostin A4-kokoisen linopiirroksen mökkimäestä isommalle paperille, jotta voin lisätä kuvan alaosaan vedenalaista elämää. Pieniä linopiirroksia kaloista ja vesikasveista sovittelin jo veteen. Pari uuttakin kalaa sopii joukkoon. Vesi tulee olemaan pehmeää pastelliväriä.

I printed the A4 lino drawing of the cottage hill on a larger paper so that I can add underwater life to the bottom of the picture. I already arranged small lino drawings of fish and water plants in the water. A couple of new fish are also suitable. The water will be a soft pastel color.

MÖKKI MÄELLÄ / COTTAGE ON A HILL

 

Mökki mäellä on A4-kokoinen linopiirros kesämökistä mäen päällä järven rannassa. Väritin käsin mökin punaiseksi, sillä niinhän melkein kaikki mökit Suomessa ovat punaisia. Rannassa olevassa saunassa kiuas lämpiää, sisällä on valoa. Vene rannassa on minusta houkutteleva. Ja olihan tätä kuvaa kiva kaivertaa kaikkine yksityiskohtineen. Seuraavaksi kuva laajenee alaspäin, sillä sinne tulee vettä.

The cottage on the hill is an A4-sized linocut of a summer cottage on top of a hill on the shore of a lake. I painted the cabin red by hand, because that's how almost all cabins in Finland are - red. In the sauna on the beach, the heater is warming, there is light inside. A boat on the beach is attractive to me. And it was nice to engrave this picture with all the details. Next, the image expands downwards, as there will be water.

Tämä kissakortti sopii erinomaisesti Suomen pimeimpään vuodenaikaan, mustaa on, aurinkoa ei näy. Mutta keskellä tätä pimeyttä ilahduttaa brittiläisen Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) maalaus kahdesta kissasta kesäisellä kukkaniityllä. Taustalla häämöttää kaksi valkoista taloa. Kissat ovat tunnistettavia Lemanin kissoja, lempeän oloisia, pyöreitä ja pehmeitä, toinen keltaraidallinen, toinen mustavalkoinen. Pilvet taivaallakin ovat kuin pumpulia.

This cat card is perfect for Finland's darkest season, it's black, you can't see the sun. But in the middle of this darkness, the British Martin Leman's (b. 1934) painting of two cats in a summer meadow of flowers delights. Two white houses loom in the background. The cats are recognizable Leman cats, gentle, round and soft, one with yellow stripes and the other black and white. Even the clouds in the sky are like cotton wool.

MÖKKIMÄKI - KAIVERRUSTA / COTTAGE HILL - CARVING

 

Linopiirros mökkimäestä alkaa valmistua. Pitkät portaat olivat sen verran tarkka homma, että piti tussilla mustata linolevyn pintaa, jotta erottaa sen, mitä on kaivertanut vaaleampana. Parvi lintuja lentää yli mökin ja mäessä on isompia peltoaukeita, metso, jänis ja orava. Rannassa lämpiää sauna ja vene odottaa laiturissa kalastajia.

The linocut of the cottage hill is starting to be completed. The long stairs were such a meticulous job that I used a marker to paint the surface of the lino board with a black marker in order to distinguish what has been carved in a lighter color. A flock of birds flies over the summer cottage and there are bigger open fields, a capercaillie, a hare and a squirrel on the hill. There is the sauna warming on the beach and a boat is waiting for fishermen at the pier.

IITTALASSA NÄHTYÄ / SEEN IN IITTALA

Iittalan talvi -näyttelyssä poiketessa osui silmään (ja kännykkään) aulapuodin oven yläpuollella ollut kiva Luciana Marianon maalaus, taustalla joulumarkkinoiden asiakkaita. Omista viidestä  työistäni talven näyttelyssä kuva myös "Vedestä nousee kasvista" ja kahdesta kissasta sateenkaaren alla. Yhdessä lino/pastellissa oli punainen täplä. Ja yhteen tyhjään aukkoon seinällä ilmestyi "Ohutta yläpilveä". Aina sattuu ja tapahtuu!

While passing by the Iittala winter exhibition, I  (and my cell phone) saw a nice painting by Luciana Mariano above the lobby door, with Christmas market customers in the background. Among my five works in the winter exhibition, there is also a picture "A plant rises from the water" and two cats under a rainbow. One of the lino/pastels had a red spot. And in one empty gap on the wall appeared "Thin upper cloud". Always something happening!!

VIELÄ EHTII INTERIN JOULUPUOTIIN / STILL TIME TO VISIT INTERI'S CHRISTMAS SHOP

Vietiin lisää kalentereita 2024 Interin joulupuotiin Runeberginmökissä Haiharassa, olivat loppuneet. Vielä on aikaa vierailla tässä ihanassa jouluhjakaupassa. Linopiirroksistani pari oli myyty, mutta muutama on vielä jäljellä sekä kortteja, pyyhkeitä ja nyt myös kalentereita. Joulukaupasta tuntuu löytyvän melkein mitä vain: koruja, lasia, keramiikkaa, puukauhoja, leluja, teklstiilejä, villasukkia ja taidetta. Ostin melkein uunituoreita sydämenmallisia karjalanpiirakoita, osa ehkä säästyy pakastimessa jouluun asti. Kauppa on auki vielä ensi viikolla poikkeuksellisesti  maanantain ja tiistainkin 18.-19.12.2023 klo 13-18.

We took more calendars 2024 to Interi's Christmas shop in Runeberg's Cottage in Haihara, they were sold out. There is still time to visit this wonderful Christmas gift shop. A couple of my lino drawings had been sold, but there are still a few left, as well as cards, tea towels and now also calendars. It seems like you can find almost anything in the Christmas shop: jewelry, glass, ceramics, wooden spoons, toys, woolen socks and art. I bought heart-shaped Karelian pies almost fresh from the oven, some may be saved in the freezer until Christmas. The store will be open still next week exceptionally on Monday and Tuesday 18-19 December 2023 from 13:00 to 18:00.

MÖKKIMÄKI -LUONNOS / COTTAGE HILL - DRAFT

 

Hauska tilaustyö syntymässä. Lahjaksi haluttiin linopiirros kesämökistä mäen päällä järven rannassa. Sain muutaman kuvauksen mökistä ja aloin hahmotella luonnosta A4-kokoiseen linopiirrokseen, joka tästä saattaa vielä laajeta niin, että lopullisessa kuvassa näkyy vettä ja kaloja. Luonnostelen kuvaa linopiirrosta varten leivinpaperille pehmeällä lyijykynällä. Leivinpaperilta se on helppo painamalla siirtää peilikuvaksi linolevylle.

Fun custom job in the making. As a gift, they wanted a linocut of a summer cottage on top of a hill on the shore of a lake. I got a few descriptions of the cottage and started sketching the draft for an A4-sized linocut, which may expand from here so that the final image shows water and fish. I sketch an image for a linocut on baking paper with a soft pencil. From baking paper, it is easy to press and transfer nto a mirror image on a lino plate.

 Missä kissa luuraa? Kuva on London Transportin juliste vuodelta 1952. Edward Bawdenin (1903-1989) linopiirroksista kootussa City-nimisessä kokonaisuudessa on joukko Lontoon nähtävyyksiä: kirkontorneja, pylväikköjä, talojen seiniä ikkunoineen, patsaita ja siltoja. Olen aina ihaillut Bawdenin taiturillisia linopiirroksia, mutta erityisesti kissoja. Ja löytyihän se kissa tästäkin kuvasta, ihan oikeasta alanurkasta kurkkimasta.

Where is the cat hiding? The picture is a London Transport poster from 1952. The compilation called City, assembled from Edward Bawden's (1903-1989) linocuts, has a number of London sights: church towers, colonnades, walls of houses with windows, statues and bridges. I've always admired Bawden's artful linocuts, but especially cats. And the cat was found in this picture too, peeking out from the bottom right corner.

IITTALASSA - JOULUMYYJÄISET / IN IITTALA AT THE CHRISTMAS MARKET

Iittalassa muutaman naivistikaverin kanssa viihdyttiin naivistisissa joulumyyjäisissä. Tavaraa oli monenlaista: romumetallia, grafiikkaa, keramiikkaa, maalauksia, kortteja ja kirjoja. Kiitos kaikille pöytien ääressä pysähtyneille ja ostoksiakin tehneille! Muutama kuva puhelimesta ennen myyjäisten avaamista.

In Iittala, with a couple of naive friends, we had fun at the Naive art Christmas market. There were many kinds of goods: scrap metal, graphics, ceramics, paintings, cards and books. Thank you everyone who stopped by the tables and made purchases! A few pictures here from the phone before the market opened.

UUSI TYÖHUONE / NEW WORK ROOM

Silloin tietää kotiutuneensa uuteen työhuoneeseen kun suunnilleen tietää, mistä kaapista tai laatikosta mitäkin tarvittavaa tavaraa löytää, paperia, mustetta, kaiverrustarvikkeita, nauloja, teippiä, kyniä jne. Oli kyllä haikeaa jättää hyvästit vanhalle rakkaalle työhuoneelle ja sen ikkunan takana kasvavalle vaahteralle. Mutta uudenkin työhuoneen ikkunasta aukeaa kaunis näkymä Pyhäjärvelle asti, ja myös vaahtera. Suurin muutos on kuitenkin tila, jota on enemmän ja isojakin paperiarkkeja voi levitellä lattialle. Ja mikä tila nyt istua iltaa tai esitellä töitä ystäville tai taiteen ostajille. Ison osan Pispala-aiheisista töistä olen saanut esille työtilaan, vähän kuin galleriaan. Muita töitä, kissoja ja pastellitaivaita on joitakin esillä varastohuoneessa, jokunen seinillä ja enemmän kansioissa tai laatikoissa. Seuraavaksi järjestän kyllä isommat paperit, jotka on muutossa varastoitu saunan lauteille.

That's when you know you've settled into a new work room when you know roughly where to find the things you need in a cupboards or drawers, paper, ink, engraving materials, nails, tape, pens, etc. It was sad to say goodbye to the old dear study and the maple tree growing behind its window. But even from the window of the new study there is a beautiful view all the way to Pyhäjärvi, and also a maple tree. However, the biggest change is the space, which there is more than before and even large sheets of paper can be spread on the floor. And what a space to sit in the evening or present work to friends or art buyers. I have displayed a large part of Pispala-themed works in the workspace, a bit like a gallery. Some of other works, cats and pastel skies are displayed in the storage room, some on the walls and more in folders or boxes. Next, I will organize the larger papers, which have been stored in the sauna during the move.
