Joulu lähestyy, joten korttilaatikosta jouluinen kuva. Englantilaisen Martin Lemanin (s. 1937) Joulutassu / Santa Paws on tömäkkä joulukissa. Etutassut ristissä hän nojaa lumiseen tiiliaitaan. Pään päälle on laskeutunut punarinta, johon silmät kohdistuvat. Olkoon siellä joulun kunniaksi!  Syvän sininen tähtitaivas ja laakerinlehdet korostavat joulutunnelmaa.

 Christmas is approaching, so a Christmassy picture from my card box. Santa Paws by Englishman Martin Leman (b. 1937) is a plump Christmas cat. With his front paws crossed, he leans against a snowy brick wall. A robin has landed on his head, which his eyes are focused on. May he be there for Christmas! The deep blue starry sky and bay leaves emphasize the Christmassy atmosphere,

Englantilaisen naivistin Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) maalaus "Mitä laittaisin päälleni tänä iltana" on vuodelta 1972. Tympääntyneen oloinen keltainen paksu kissa tuntuu tuumaavan:"Aina tätä samaa". Kuvassa on monta hienoa yksityiskohtaa: persialainen matto, lattialle pudonnut ruusu, pilkullinen tapetti kuin tähtitaivas, pitsiliina nojatuolilla, tuolilla istuvan naisen hauskat paksupohjaiset kengät, isot kiharat tukat ja muhkea samettituoli. Huoneen tunnelma on tumma, mutta katseen vangitsee kalpean vaalea alaston hahmo tuolilla ja taaempana sama nainen peilailemassa.

The English naïve artist Martin Leman's (b. 1934)  painting "What Shall I Wear Tonight" is from 1972. The yellow fat cat, looking numb, seems to say: "Always the same". There are many great details in the picture: a Persian carpet, a rose that fell on the floor, a speckled wallpaper like a starry sky, a lace tablet on an armchair, funny thick-soled shoes of a woman sitting on a chair, big curly hair and a plush velvet chair. The atmosphere of the room is dark, but the eye is caught by a pale blond nude figure on a chair and the same woman in the background looking in the mirror.

Tämä kissakortti sopii erinomaisesti Suomen pimeimpään vuodenaikaan, mustaa on, aurinkoa ei näy. Mutta keskellä tätä pimeyttä ilahduttaa brittiläisen Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) maalaus kahdesta kissasta kesäisellä kukkaniityllä. Taustalla häämöttää kaksi valkoista taloa. Kissat ovat tunnistettavia Lemanin kissoja, lempeän oloisia, pyöreitä ja pehmeitä, toinen keltaraidallinen, toinen mustavalkoinen. Pilvet taivaallakin ovat kuin pumpulia.

This cat card is perfect for Finland's darkest season, it's black, you can't see the sun. But in the middle of this darkness, the British Martin Leman's (b. 1934) painting of two cats in a summer meadow of flowers delights. Two white houses loom in the background. The cats are recognizable Leman cats, gentle, round and soft, one with yellow stripes and the other black and white. Even the clouds in the sky are like cotton wool.

Englantilaisen Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) maalauksessa "Valkoinen kissa" vuodelta 1979 on jotain talvista, melkein joulumaista tunnelmaa. Kissan takana on ehkä lumihankia ja tähtiä, punaiset ympyrät valkoisella ovat kuin omenoita ja alhaalla on selvästi joulukuusia ylösalaisin. Taulun nimen mukaan kissan pitäisi olla valkoinen, mutta se näyttää enemmänkin kultaiselta. Ääriviivat on piirretty tarkkaan pienillä sivelminvedoilla. Lemanin kissojen tapaan rauhallinen katse on suoraan edessä, ja korvat ovat tosi pienet.

In this painting "White Cat" from 1979 by English Martin Leman (b. 1934) there is something wintry, almost Christmas-like feeling. Perhaps there are snow slopes and stars behind the cat, red balls on the white are like apples, and at the bottom there are clearly Christmas trees upside down. After the name of the painting the cat should be white but she is more like golden. The outlines have been painted sharply with tiny brushstrokes. Typical for Leman´s cats she is peacefully looking straight ahead, and the ears are really small.

Englantilaisen Martin Lemanin  (s. 1934)  kissamaalaus "Delapole" vuodelta 1985 on saanut muotoon leikattuna korttina taakseen pienen taitettavan tuen ja pysyy pystyssä pöydällä. Kuvassa Lemanille tyypillisen majakan juurella on pyöreä merimerkki. Kissan vieressä pyöreä muoto toistuu pyöreiksi hioituneissa kivissä. Suuren harmaanvalkoisen kissan ilme on ystävällinen mutta päättäväinen - kapteeni?

English Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) cat painting "Delapole" from 1985 has been cut to the form and got a foldable support behind, so it stays upright on the table. In the picture there is a round nautical sign at the foot of the for Leman so typical lighthouse. The round shape is repeated by the cat with two rounded stones. The expression of the large gray-white cat is friendly but firm - a captain?

 Viirullinen kissa kuvan vasemmassa alakulmassa näyttää lievästi sanoen hämmentyneeltä. Huoneessa vallitsee jonkinlainen sekavuus ja päättämättömyyden tila. Nainen peilin edessä katsoo itseään tarkkaan ja hänen takapuolensa heijastuu toiseen peiliin, siitä maalauksen nimi "Heijastuksia" (Reflections). Mitä oikein pukisi päälleen? Sängyn päällä odottaa kolme mekkoa, piironkien laatikot ovat puoliksi avoinna ja päällä on vain alushousut, puolipitkät sukat ja punaiset korkokengät. Seinällä on pari taulua, joissa on majakka, englantilaiselle Martin Lemanille (s. 1934) tunnusomainen aihe.

A stripy cat on the left corner seems to be mildly said confused.  There is some kind of mess and state of indecision in the room. A woman is in front of a mirror looking carefully at herself, and her backside id reflecting on the other mirror,  hence the name of the painting "Reflections". Really, what to wear? On the bed there are three dresses waiting, the cupboard drawers are half open and she is wearing only underpants, half-length  stockings and red high heel shoes. Two pictures on the wall are depicting lighthouses, a characteristic subjects for English Martin Leman (b. 1934).

 Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) kissakortti vuodelta 1985 on pöydällä seisovaa mallia. Kaksi mustavalkoista kissaa istuu vierekkäin punaisella matolla. Äiti ja pentu, sillä toinen on hiukan isompi? Vai kenties sisarukset? Molemmilla on samantapainen valkea kuvio kuonossa ja keltamustat silmät. Lemanin kissoille tyypillisesti nämä kissat tuijottavat suoraan katsojaa, ne eivät ehkä ole niitä kaikkein älykkäimpiä rotunsa edustajia, mutta hyvin itsetietoisia.

Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) cat card is from the year 1985 and a self standing model. Two black and white cats are sitting side by side on a red carpet. A mother and her kitten, because the other one is bigger? Or siblings? Both have a similar white pattern on their nose and yellow & black eyes. Typical for Leman these cats are staring straight at the viewer, maybe they are not the sharpest of their breed, but very self-conscious.
