KOHTI ETELÄÄ - pastellitaivas / TO THE SOUTH - Pastel sky

Kohti etelää - lino & pastellityön taivas on valmis. Käytin Pan Pastel -värejä ja paljon valkoista. Tavoitteena oli saada utuinen taivas ja halo kuun ympärille. Ihan vähän pinkkiäkin tuli oikeaan alaosaan pilven reunalle. Nyt puuttuvat vielä linolinnut kuvan oikeaan yläreunaan.

To the South lino & pastel work´s sky is now ready. I used Pan Pastel colours and a lot of white. My purpose was to get a hazy sky and a halo around the moon. Just a little bit of pink appeared on the border of a cloud on the right side. Now are missing only birds on the right up corner of the picture.

Amsterdamilaisen valokuvaajan Jack Jacobsin mustavalkoisessa valokuvassa on talon tiiliseinä ja ikkunoita. Vasemmalla alakulmassa on osa kaunista katulyhtyä. Voisi kuvitella, että Jacobs on kävellyt kadulla kanavan varrella ja yhtäkkiä katse osuu kissaan ikkunassa. Kissasta näkyy van pää, mutta se on selvästi kiinnostun ulkomaailmasta ja haluaisi myös kadulle. Valokuvaaja ei voi auttaa, mutta ottaa kuvan.

In this photo by Jack Jacobs from Amsterdam there are a tile wall of a house and windows. Part of a beautiful street lantern is on the left corner. You could imagine that Jacobs has been walking in the street by a canal, and suddenly he is spotting a cat in the window. Only the head is seen of the cat, but it is clearly interested in the world outside and it would like to be in the street too.The photographer can not help, but he can take a picture.

Tästä pastellitaivaasta on tulossa aika vaalea, hentoinen, mutta silti en voinut vastustaa kiusausta tehdä tumma oranssi taivaanranta. Taivaan on tarkoitus olla vaalea kuin varhaisena sumuisena aamuna tai myöhäisenä kesäiltana. Koska kuvaan kaavailemani linnut ovat lähdössä etelään, kyse lienee syksystä.

This pastel sky is going to be rather light, gentle, but still I could not prevent my temptation to make a dark orange horizon. The sky is meant to be pale like on a foggy early morning or late in a summer evening. Because the birds I`m planning to the picture are leaving to the south, it´s probably about the Autumn.

Nyt on keskikesä, mutta aamun tai illan hämyssä voi jo aavistella lintujen valmistautuvan matkalle kohti etelää. Tästä uudesta lino/pastellityöstä on tulossa 70 x 40 cm kuva, jossa on lintuparvi. Alussa on vain alaosan linopiirros Pispalasta portaineen ja oranssi suuri täysikuu. Pitää odotella linovärin kuivumista ennen kuin pääsee värittämään pastellitaivasta.

It´s middle of the summer, but in the mist of morning or night you can already foresee how the birds are preparing moving to the south. This new lino & pastel work will be sized 70 x 40 cm picture with a flock of birds. At the beginning there is only a linocut of Pispala with the stairs at the bottom and a large orange full moon. I have to wait the lino ink to dry before I get to making the pastel sky.

VÄRIÄ PIENIIN LINOIHIN / COLOUR TO SMALL LINOS

Lisäsin osaan pienistä linopiirroksista väriä ennen vedostusta. Levitin pastellia perhosten tai lintujen siipien alle. Näin vedostettaessa linopiirroksen kaiverretuissa kohdissa näkyy hiukan väriä, yleensä keltaista.

I added to some of small linocuts colour before printing. I spread pastel under the wings of butterflies or birds. In this way when printing linocuts there can be seen some colour, usually yellow on the carved parts of linos.

PIENIÄ LINOJA LISÄÄ / MORE SMALL LINOS

Välillä on kiva tehdä pieniä linopiirroksia, kuin leimasimia. Sopiva koko nyt tuntui olevan noin 10 x 10 cm. Näitä uusia linoja voi käyttää isompien sekatekniikkatöiden kanssa, esimerkiksi pastellitaivaalle. Voihan näitä tietenkin vedostaa yksinäänkin vaikka koristepaperille. Löysin varastostani kaunista Tallinnan Zelluloos-kaupasta ostettua vaaleaa kukkapaperia, jolle näitä perhosia, lintuja tai kissoja voi vedostaa. Kiinnitän näitä pahville ilman mitään kehyspahveja myytäväksi Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttelyn aulashoppiin.

It´s fun to make in between other works small linocuts, like stamps. The suitable size seemed now be about 10 x 10 cm. I can use these small linos with larger mixed media pictures, for example on a pastel sky. And of course I can print these on their own on a piece of decorative paper. I found in my store cupboard sheets of beautiful flower patterned paper bought in Tallinn from Zelluloos shop. I can print on this paper some of butterflies, birds or cats. I attach these on a piece of cardboard without any passe partout for sale at the lobby shop of Naïve Artists in Ittala summer exhibition.

Martti Lehdon (1933-2016) naivistisessa maalauksessa "Kisankelloja" on Suomen keskikesän tunnelma. Niitty on täynnä kissankelloja, niittyleinikkejä ja horsmia, sinistä, keltaista ja vaaleanpunaista. Lehdolle aika tyypillisesti kukkamäki näyttää jatkuvan niin kauas ylös, että vastaan tulee kirkas sininen taivas pumpulipilvineen. Mustavalkoinen kissa melkein hukkuu kukkaketoon. Sen kaikki mielenkiinto kohdistuu ilmassa lepattavaan nokkosperhoseen. Melkein voi haistaa kukkakedon makean tuoksun kuumassa auringonpaisteessa.

Here is an atmosphere of a Finnish Midsummer´s Day in this painting by Naïve artist Martti Lehto (1933-2016). The field is full of bluebells, buttercups and willowherbs, blue, yellow and pink. Typically for Lehto the flower field seems to continue so far up, that it meets the clear blue sky with clouds like cottonwool. The black and white cat is almost drowned in the flower field. All its interest is focused on a small tortoiseshell fluttering in the air. You can almost smell the sweet scent of the flower field in the hot sunshine.

 Linopiirros ja pastellityö revontulista on nyt valmis - keskellä suomalaista hellekautta. Vielä on pitkä aika siihen, että revontulia taas näkyy. Taivas ja itse revontulet ovat pehmeää pastellia. Lisäsin taivaalle myös tähtiä. Alaosan Pispala-kuva on linopiirros. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm.

A linocut & pastel work of northern lights is now ready - in the middle of Finnish heat season. It´s still a long time till we can see northern lights again. The sky and northern lights are soft pastel. I added also a few stars in the sky. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm.

Matti Pikkujämsän (s. 1976) maalauksessa on tiikeri, ei ihan kissa mutta kissaeläin kuitenkin. Kuvassa on terävyyttä ja liikettä. Hauskasti tiikeri peittää ylemmän kolmion alueen. Tiikerin raidat ja ruohikko toistavat samaa viivamaista siveltimenvetoa. Tiikeri näyttää hampaitaan, mutta ei se nyt ole ihan hirveän pelottava.

In this painting by Matti Pikkujämsä (b. 1976) there is a tiger, not exactly a cat but still a feline. There is a lot sharpness and movement in the picture. It´s fun how the tiger is filling the upper triangle of the picture. The stripes of the tiger and the blades of grass are repeating the same lineal brush strokes. The tiger is showing his teeth, but he is perhaps not so very frightening.

RUNEBERGIN MÖKKI / RUNEBERG´S COTTAGE

Vietiin uusi linopiirros myydyn tilalle Interin kesäpuotiin Runebergin mökissä. Uudet pyyhkeet näyttivät kivoilta vanhan hirsimökin seinällä. Perähuoneessa oli Johanna Vilénin taidenäyttely, ja hänellä tuntuu olevan tekeillä monenlaista: maalauksia, mobiileja ja veistoksia. Pidin erityisesti hänen grafiikastaan, joissa oli kauniita väripintoja, herkkää viivaa ja rohkeutta. Ja miten hienoa oli nähdä oikea fyysinen näyttely koronakaranteenin jälkeen.

We took a new linocut to replace a sold one to Interi`s summer shop at the Runeberg´s Cottage. The new tea towels looked fine on the wall of the old log house. In the back room there was an art exhibition by Johanna Vilén, and she seems to work on many styles: painting, mobiles and sculptures. I liked especially about her graphics with beautiful colour surfaces, subtle lines and boldness. And how nice it was to see a real physical exhibition after coronavirus quarantines.

Revontulet saivat vähän lisää väriä - pehmeää pastellia. Näitä oli yllättävän vaikea tehdä, mutta ihanaa oli sotkea sinistä, vihreää, keltaista ja violettia.

The northern light got some more colour - soft pastel. It was surprisingly difficult to make these, but so lovely to mess together blue, green, yellow and purple.

Miksei voisi aloittaa kirkkaana kesäpäivänä uutta linopiirros/pastellityötä revontulista. Viime vuosina revontulia on voinut nähdä eteläisessäkin Suomessa. Ehkä ei yhtä hehkuvia kuin pohjoisessa, mutta kauniita vihreän ja sinisen sävyjä, hiukan violettiakin pohjoisella taivaalla.

Why not start a new linocut & pastel work of northern lights on a bright summer day. It´s been possible to see northern light during a few past year even in the southerns parts of Finland. Maybe not so glorious than in the north, but still beautiful greenish, bluish and even a bit of violet on the northern sky.

KUUMAILMAPALLO JA LAIVA / HOT AIR BALLOON AND SHIP

Välillä on mukava palata kymmenosaisen Pispala-talojen ja järven pariin. Nyt valitsin kaksi osaa tästä linopiirrossarjasta. Kuvassa on kuumailmapallo ja järvellä matkaava laiva. Molemmissa ollaan matkalla jonnekin. Minusta matkassa oli ennen korona-aikoja aina jotain positiivista, uuden kokemista ja seikkailua. Nyt matkustus on saanut ihan uuden merkityksen ja siihen liittyy pelkoa ja uhkaa. Kotoilu on noussut kunniaan, joten kuvitellaan, että tässä lennetään kuumailmapallolla vain Pispalan harjun yli ja laivalla mennään pieni kierros järvellä niin että Pispala näkyy koko ajan. Kuvan koko on 30 x 40 cm ja ilmapallo on väritetty käsin.

It´s nice to go back to my ten-part work of Pispala houses and lake. Now I chose two parts of this series of linocuts. There are a hot air balloon and ship travelling on a lake in this picture. We are on our way to somewhere in both of them In my mind there was always something positive, new experiences and adventure in travelling before the corona pandemic times. Now travelling has got a whole new meaning, and there is fear and threat in it. The domestication has risen to glory, so let´s imagine that in here we are just flying over the Pispala ridge and sailing in the boat a small round on the lake so that we can see Pispala the whole time. The size of the picture is 30 x 40 cm, and the balloon is hand coloured.

Tämä kissakortin valokuva on vanha. Kortin mukaan kuvan on ottanut Harry Pointer (1822-1889) vuonna 1870. Nukkuvat kissat on erinomainen kohde, sillä ne pysyvät paikoillaan. Tässä valokuvassa kolme kissanpoikaa nukkuu paksun kirjan päällä. Kirja on National Galleryn  raportti vuodelta 1853. Kissoja lämmittää niiden päälle heitetty takki ja hattu. On kyllä melkein ihme, että kuvaaja on saanut kissat pysymään paikoillaan kuvan oton ajan. Valo lankeaa kauniisti raidallisiin kissoihin ja kirjan selkämykseen. Pointer oli englantilainen valokuvaaja Brightonista. Hän erikoistui kissojen kuvaamiseen ja julkaisi humoristisia lavastettuja kissakuviaan käyntikortteina.

This photograph of the cat card is old. According to the card the photo was taken by Harry Pointer (1822-1889) in 1870. The sleeping cats is an excellent target because they stay still. Three kitten are sleeping on a thick book in this photograph. The book is Report of National Gallery from the year 1853. The cats are kept warm by a coat and hat thrown over them. Still, it´s almost a wonder that the photographer ha manged holding the cats back for the duration of taking the photo. The light is falls beautifully on the striped kittens and the back of the book. Pointer was an English photographer from Brighton. He specialized to photographing cats and published his humorous and staged car photos as carte-de-visites.

UUSIA KEITTIÖPYYHKEITÄ / NEW TEA TOWELS

Teetin uusia keittiöpyyhkeitä Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttelyn aulashoppia ja Runebergin mökin kesäpuotia varten. Nämä pyyhkeet ovat mielestäni aika kauniita. Ne on tehty neljästä linopiiros & pastellityöstä ja ne ovat värillisiä. Pyyhkeet on tehnyt kangasalalainen yritys Printscorpio, ja tulos on laadukas, melkein kuin maalaus kankaalle. Työ on tehty Suomessa ja materiaali on 50 % pellavaa ja 50 % puuvillaa.

I ordered new tea towels for the lobby shop at Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition and for the summershop at Runeberg´s Cottage. I think these towels are pretty beautiful. They are made of four of my linocut & pastels and they are colourful. The towels are made by Printscorpio firm from Kangasala, and the end product is high-quality, almost like a painting on canvas. The work was done in Finland and the material is 50 % linen and 50 % cotton.

NAIVISTIT IITTALASSA AUKEAA / NAÏVE ARTISTS IN IITTALA OPEN

Tänään 4.6.2020 Naivistit Iittalassa -kesänäyttely aukeaa. Eipä olisi tätä uskonut maaliskuun lopulla koronapandemian ollessa pahimmillaan. Näyttelyyn pääsee 30 henkilöä kerrallaan, joten turvavälejä voi helposti noudattaa taidetta katsellessaan. Tänä keväänä oli mahdollista varata neljän hengen yksityisnäyttelyaikoja 20.5. alkaen. Tätä mahdollisuutta käytettiinkin paljon, ja teosten myyntikin  on ollut hyvää. Omalta seinältäni kuudesta työstä neljä oli jo myyty ennen näyttelyn virallista aukeamista. Nämä yksityisajat korvasivat avajaisiltaa, joka nyt oli peruttu koronan takia. Kokemukset privaattinäyttelyistä olivat niin hyvät, että sellaisia varmaan tehdään jatkossakin. Tämän  kesän näyttelyssä on noin 400 naivistista taideteosta 50 taiteilijalta. Näyttelyn teema on "Villi, vapaa ja värikäs", ja tämä tunnelma todella toteutuu kokemuksessa kun kulkee läpi kahden kerroksen. Koronakevään mahdollisesti synkemmät sävyt eivät näissä töissä juurikaan näy, on kesä, luonto kukkii, ihmiset ilakoivat.

Today 4th of June / 2020 will open Naïve Artists in Iittala summer exhibition. Who would have believed this at the end of March when

coronavirus pandemic was at its peak. There are allowed to enter max. 30 people at a time, so the safe distances are easy to keep when watching at the art. It was possible to reserve private displays this Spring for four people from 20th May on. This possibility was used a lot, and also a lot of art was sold. From six linocuts on my exhibition wall four were already sold before the exhibition officially opens. There private displays were compensating the opening ceremony, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. The experiences of these private times were so good that there surely will be them also in the future. There are about 400 works by 50 artists at this year´s exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is "Wild, Free and Colourful" , and this a feeling which you get walking through two floors of Naive art. The possible darker colours of the pandemic Spring are not seen in these art works, there is summer, nature is blooming and people are frolicking.
