Pieni (15 x 10 cm) kissalinoni kaipasi väriä. Pärekoriin piti saada kellanruskea väri. Ratkaisin tämän käyttämällä sapluunaa, johon leikkasin pärekorin kokoisen aukon. Väritin sitten aukon kohdan kellanruskeaksi pastellivärillä ja vedostin linopiirroksen kellahtavan värin päälle.

My small (15 x 10 cm) cat lino required some colour. The rattan basket should be yellow brown. I solved this need using a stencil. I cut a rattan basket sized hole, coloured then the hole yellow brown with pastels, and printed the linocut on the yellowish colour.

KISSAT PÄREKORISSA - aloitusta / CATS IN RATTAN BASKET - Beginning
Sarjaani pieniä (15 x 10 cm) kissalinoja on tulossa uusi työ, jossa kaksi kissaa kurkistaa pärekorista. Inspiraatio tähän kuvaan tuli Facebook- kaverini Blythe Tsain valokuvasta. Maailma on pieni! Mustavalkloinen vedos tarvitsee selvästi väriä.

There will be be a new lino for my series of small (15 x 10 cm) cat linos. Here two cats are peeping out of a rattan basket. The inspiration for this lino is a photograph by my Facebook friend Blythe Tsai. When I asked her permission to use this photo with my lino, she told me that the basket is Finnish. My friend lives is Taiwan, but she has a friend who visits often Finland and brings Finnish wares for sale in her shop. The world is small! Black and white print needs clearly some colour.

Martti Lehto (1933-2016) painted Naïve Art cats, and there was often repeated the Finnish ideal landscape in the pictures. Here you have all that is needed for Martti Lehto´s cat paining: a red cottage, birch trees, lake, blue sky, cumulus clouds and field of flowers. Usually there are only one kind of flowers: daisies or dandelions, but on this field there are many kind of flowers. The sense of perspective comes from the diminishing flowers towards the horizon. There are now three cats, perhaps the mother cat and her two kittens, repeating the colours of the mother: black and white.

KORENTOJEN KARKELOT / DRAGONFLIES GALORE
********************
Dragonflies Galore, a new work in my series of Galores is now ready. The size of this work is also 50 x 30 cm, and it consists of linocuts and a pastel sky. Well, the sky was rather slow to make at this time with soft pastel colours because I printed ten linocuts of dragonflies before colouring the sky. Between and around the dragonflies there were a huge amount of tiny holes to colour. In a few similar works I have coloured first the sky with pastels and put stencils on the places of the later printed linocuts. But this way it´s difficult to print the linocuts just at their right places, and there always remains spots around the linocuts which I have to "patch" with pastels. Perhaps I like the current way better. I´n not bothered that the sky is a bit mottled. And I like that reflection of the moon on the linocut of the lake at the bottom. The dragonflies are coloured by hand.

Susan Herbert on tehnyt ison määrän kissamuunnoksia kuuluisista tauluista, parempiakin on.
*************
Vincent van Gogh´s (1853-1890) self-portrait wearing a straw hat and artist's smock was painted in 1887, three years before his suicide in a mental hospital. The gaze in this portrait is desperate, stinging and anguished. the corners of the mouth are turned down. The big ear is red and the same colour is repeated on the hems of the smock. The background has been made airy with only a few hasty blue brush strokes. There is something stubborn and menacing in the picture. You can not say the same about Susan Herbert's interpretation of this painting. The cat has big bright blue and peaceful eyes, the ear is missing and the mouth is almost smiling. The background and straw hat are painted van Gogh style and that cat's beard is almost amusing. Susan Herbert has made quite lot of similar car variations of famous paintings, and there are better that this one.

**********
Dragonflies Galore is continuing. Now I printed the sky full of linocuts of different species of dragonflies, small, medium and large, ten all together The sky behind the dragonflies was coloured with soft pastels. The dragonflies clearly need some colour on their wings, so that is the next phase of work.

KORENTOJEN KARKELOT - aloitusta / DRAGONFLIES GALORE - Beginning
Uusi työ Karkelot-sarjaan on tulossa. Taivaalla on kuparinvärinen linopiirroskuu. Kymmenen korentoa näyttäisi sopivan taivaalle.

A new work to the series of Galores is on its way. The sky will be full of linocuts of different species of dragonflies. At the bottom there is a linocut of a lake, in my mind this is a scene to Pyhäjärvi from a vantage point in Pyynikki national park. A copper linocut moon is in the sky. It seems that ten dragonflies will fit to this sky.

JOSEPH ALANEN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
*****************
Joseph Alanen (1885-1920) has been mentioned as a unknown master. He died in the middle of a very active creative period of Spanish flu, H1N1 pandemic disease, which of course evokes shakes in there times of the Corona virus. Still, there are a lot of Kalevala themed works by Alanen. They have usually painted on a very rough, patterned canvas, and the patterns of Finnish folk art are repeating, branches of trees, triangles and lines. At the exhibition at Tampere Art Museum there is also a large triptych "Klaus Kurki and the death of Elina", which I saw quite often when working in Metso library where is hung on the wall of the large lecture room. The simplified Jugend style is at its peak in this painting. In other than Kalevala themed works you can sense influences even from van Gogh, meandering clouds and similar brush work, for example in the painting " Distillation". There were surprisingly many linocuts at the exhibition, a series of Finnish masters, i.e. Sibelius and subjects from Kalevala of course. "The Son of Marjatta is Chastening Väinämöinen" was just charming. The style of linocuts was beautiful, clean and clear. Downstairs at the museum there were Anna Alapuro´s (b. 1953) graphic works (carborundum and serigraphy), and they felt quite bare and stripped after Alanen.

Joan Freestonen maalauksessa "Molyneux, Elgin Courtin kissa" vuodelta 1984 on kissa rottinkisessa kantokorissa.
***********
A cat is almost asleep in a rattan basket in this 1984 painting "Molineaux, An Elgin Court Cat" by Joan Freestone. The situation seems to me almost impossible: the cat has apparently gone to the basket of her own free will, and she is planning to have a nap there. After my own experience to get a cat into a basket requires a preliminary plan, quick & sly capture and almost a fight in order to get a cat into a basket and the hatch quickly shut. The hatch of Molineaux's basket will be closed by knotting leather straps, which to me seems to be almost a hopeless task. Perhaps there is no plan to move this cat anywhere in the basket. The brown hues of the painting are soothing.

PERHOSTEN KARKELOT / BUTTERFLIES GALORE

Six butterflies and a silvery moon over Pispala, this is Butterflies Galore. There is a combination of linocuts (the scene at the bottom, moon and butterflies) and pastel sky. The sunset is quite dramatic orange, and there is same hue on the wings of two butterflies. The butterflies are coloured by hand with different markers and pastel pens. The picture is more colourful than I thought. The size is same as in also in the other linocut & pastel works in this series: 50 x 30 cm.

One Galore more is coming to my series of Galores: now it´s Butterflies Galore. There is a linocut on the bottom of the picture, Pispala houses and stairs down to the shore of a lake. A moon printed with silver colour is glimmering in the sky. The butterflies are also linocuts, and you can even recognize some species of butterflies, at least a Papilio machaon and a Polygonia c-album. I spread a bit blue colour on the outer side of the moon when printing, so the moon would separate better from its background. Next I will colour the butterflies by hand.

*************
I popped in Kuopio and saw Kaksoiselämää musical based on Juice's music at Kuopio City Theatre (recommendation!) and visited also Kuopio Art Museum. The collection of older Finnish art from the museum's own collection was full of gems Elga Seseman, Juho Rissanen, Pekka Halonen, Eero Järnefelt, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, Ragnar Ekelund, Inari Krohn and Erik Enroth. Now they were beautifully presented, moving from an art work to the next one evoked ideas and thrills of colours, shapes and vibes of different eras. Downstairs there were works of M_itä Biennale of Contemporary Art, of which I liked most of Tuuli Meriläinen's (b. 1992) two paintings of houses with combinations of different techniques. The museum is located in an old bank building, and there are several old houses like this maintained and conserved in Kuopio - a cultural town!

ART PISPALAN TAMMIKUU / JANUARY AT ART PISPALA

It is always a bit wistful feeling when collecting unsold works away from the traditional January Naïve Art exhibition at Gallery Art Pispala. When we were posing in front of my wall it looked a bit different than at the beginning of the exhibition. Even the largest ten-piece "Journey from Pispala" was sold! Thanks to everyone who popped in the exhibition and bought some art! I might say a few words about the KonMari method i.e. avoiding buying anything unnecessary. I heard a couple comments from the visitors to the exhibition: "I just try to avoid here all buying" or "Tempting, but now I have to restrain all lust for buying". I just don't myself understand avoiding buying art, because art creates pleasure, joy and at its best evokes feelings and new ideas. You can not compare art with useless goods associated with KonMari.

Kolme herttaista kissanpentua on hyökännyt tytön sänkyyn. Kissanpojat repivät nähtävästi nuken kappaleiksi ja tytön ilme kertoo: "Minä en pysty noita vintiöitä millään estämään!". Maalaus on englantilaisen J. Elsleyn (1860-1952) romanttinen laatukuva "Hyökkääjät", joka on ilmestynyt Pearsin joululuettelossa 1915. Tällaiset kuvathan koristivat usein suklaarasioiden kansia vuosisadan vaihteessa. Pehmeät ruskeat sävyt ja materiaalit tuovat suloisen kotoisen tunnelman.

Three sweet kittens have invaded the bed of a girl. The kittens are apparently tearing apart a doll, and the expression of the girl is telling: "There is nothing I can do to stop those wretches!". The painting is a romantic picture "Invaders" by English J. Elsleyn (1860-1952) , and it was printed in Pears Christmas Annual 1915. These kind of pictures were often used on chocolate boxes at the turn of the Century. Soft brown colours and materials create a lovely homely feeling.
