Tämä maalaus tiikeristä viidakossa on Henri Rousseaun (1844-1910) eläinkuvista paras - Surprised! (Yllättynyt!) Värit ovat täyteläiset, vihreää, punaista, ruskeaa, keltaista. Tiikerin raidat sulautuvat viidakon lehtiin. Tuuli käy puuskaisena vasemmalta oikealle, salamat räiskyvät ja tiikerin ilme on kauhistunut. Mikä sen on yllättänyt? Alkuperäinen öljymaalaus on iso: 130 X 162 cm. Tiikerin häntä on ihan piste iin päällä!
****************
This painting of a tiger in a jungle is the best of Henri Rousseau's (1844-1910) animal pictures - Surprised! The colours are mellow, green, red, brown, yellow. The stripes of the tiger are blending beautifully with the leaves of the jungle. The gusty wind is blowing from the left to the right, lightning are flashing, and the expression on the face of the tiger is horrified. What has surprised it? The original oil painting is quite big: 130 X 160 cm. The tail of the tiger is the icing of the cake!

TARZAN: Osa 8 / TARZAN: Part Eight
*****
Now I throw my brushes away and state that this oil painting of Cat Who Thought He Was Tarzan is ready - or ready at least for now. There is that possibility in oil paintings that you can always refine or change them. Tarzan Cat is now firmly on a tree trunk in the jungle where multi-coloured flowers are blooming, birds are singing and butterflies are hovering. Even a small piece of sky is visible over the treetops. Life is wonderful!

*************
A quite ordinary, striped cat has gone hunting at night and changed to wildly speckled, so that she would blend better in the nocturnal forest. There is quite a lot of black in this linocut, but the nighttime moon is radiating its light. Even a domestic cat become a beast. Perhaps the cat doesn't notice at all a small mouse at the bottom left side.

Kissakortti: 163 / Cat Card: 163
Bruno Mason valokuvan nimi on Chat perché (Kissa orrella).
*********
Bruno Maso's photograph is called Chat perché (Cat On a Twig). In this picture the light bulb has surely blinded the cat, her white fur is shining and the yellow slanted eyes have the same colour than the apple. The atmosphere is like in a horror movie.

Jutun on kirjoittanut Pekka Helin. Hieno juttu!
****************
There was in yesterday's Hämeen Sanomat newspaper a two-page critique about this summer's Naïve Artist in Iittala exhibition: "Time flies, but nostalgia goes on forever" . This might be the first real art critique about this Naïve art exhibition, that I have spotted. The article was written by Pekka Helin. Even I was mentioned in the article, and in the positive tone. Helin refers to me as a rare graphic artist among very painting-orientated exhibition, and he compares my work to Olli Viiri's (b. 1941) early graphics. Viiri was to me a quite unknown artist, and so I looked his works in the Internet. I found a soul mate. I was quite proud about this parallel! Helin made also a quite playful remark about my cats as an alter ego. A fine article!
The paragraph conserning me goes something like this:
"A small exception (to the prevailing paintings) are Maija Kanerva's linocuts, which have some local colours of Pispala - this is also rare - almost like Olli Viiri's early works. But in these are also lurking that cat - alter ego?"

TARZAN: Osa 7 / Tarzan: Part Seven

Tarzan oil painting starts to be ready slowly - perhaps. Now I tinkered with the small butterfly. the hummingbird, and Tarzan the cat's face. It might be usual for painters, that just before getting ready the whole paintings starts to bore. Will this ever be ready?

Kissakortti: 162 / Cat Card: 162
***************
Two white cats in the middle of a bush of red flowers - what could be more like Naïve art? The cats have soft fur and green eyes. There is something stiff and sorrowful in this picture. There is no name of the artists on this card, just number 4066/8.

SUURIN LINOLEIKKAUKSENI / MY BIGGEST LINOCUT
***********
Pispala Steps, my as yet biggest linocut gathered from eight parts is now ready and printed. Its size is now 80 X 60 cm. To pull this sized lino by hand without any special tools is quite difficult, but I have a garden roller. This roller is filled with 70 liters of water, so It is possible to get quite a good pressure. And the end result is fair enough.
8-osainen linileikkaus kaiverrettuna.

KAIVERTAJA VASTAAN VEDOSTAJA / CARVER VERSUS PRINTER
Linoleikkauksessa minua on kiinnostanut mahdollisuus tehdä käsityönä teos alusta loppuun.

In linocutting I have been interested in the possibility to make the work by hand from the beginning to the end. There have not been any need for machines or ordering work from somewhere else. I have used a garden roller pulling my largest linocuts, but surely that is not considered as a machine. Now during the early summer I have noticed that I only carve and carve always new linocuts. It feel exciting to start the carving on a clean, smooth piece of lino, and then the carving takes the power. I have added still one new "layer" to my biggest linocut, which now has eight pieces and measures 80 X 60 cm. In addition I have started a new now 4-piece panorama linocut. Smaller linocuts are appearing on the side, even Christmas cards. Now I should move to printing, and it feels like changing your being from a carver to a printer. The world is quite like the other one: different colours, papers (thickness, softness, hardness, weight, hues), rollers, and other instruments for printing. I might need a separate printer, because this side of linocutting is quite an other form of art and it requires quite different kind of knowledge and way of working as carving.
