PENTTI KASKIPURO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Poikettiin Pentti Kaskipuron (1930-20109 metalligrafiikan näyttelyssä Sara Hildénin taidemuseolla. Esillä oli iso museo täynnä, valtava määrä pieniä töitä, kuivaneuloja suuri osa. 1950- luvun Helsinki-maisemat vaihtuivat jo 1960-luvulta 2000 asti punajuuriin, sipuleihin, makkaroihin ja limppuihin. Kuvat olivat tummempia kuin kuvittelin, mutta ah niin rauhallisia ja seesteisiä, kuin kuiskauksia nykyisen maailman sotiin, diktaattoreihin ja melskeeseen verrattuna. Suomen talvinen mustavalkoinen maisema ikkunoista sopi hyvin mustavalkoisten töiden lomaan.

We stopped by the exhibition of Pentti Kaskipuro's (1930-20109) metal graphics at the Sara Hildén Art Museum. The large museum was full, a huge number of small works, most of them drypoints. The Helsinki landscapes of the 1950s changed from the 1960s to 2000 to beetroot, onions, sausages and bread rolls. The images were darker than I imagined, but oh so peaceful and serene, like whispers compared to the wars, dictators and chaos of today's world. The Finnish winter landscape in black and white from the windows was a perfect match for the black and white works.

ANTTI HOLMA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Himmelblaun galleriassa Tampereella käytiin ihastumassa Antti Holman suuriin värillisiin puupiirroksiin. Hän on kehittänyt ihan oman tapansa tehdä grafiikkaansa, hyvä video näyttelyssä. Mieleen tulee underground -taide, kantaaottavat julisteet, sarjakuvat, expressionismi. Oudossa maailmassa seikkailevat rohkeat naiset, sudet ja gorillat. Gorilla + taidemaalari -kuvasta on näyttelyssä originaali kaiverrettu laatta ja kaksi erilaista vedostusta siitä.

We visited the Himmelblau gallery in Tampere and were amazed by Antti Holma's large colored woodcuts. He has developed his own way of making his graphics, a good video in the exhibition. Underground art, opinionated posters, comics, expressionism come to mind. Brave women, wolves and gorillas adventure in a strange world. The exhibition features an original engraved plate and two different prints of the Gorilla + Painter image. A fascinating experience, highly recommended!

HANNA VARIS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

 Ehdin kuin ehdinkin viimeisenä aukiolopäivänä Hanna Variksen (s. 1959) grafiikan näyttelyyn Galleria Saskiassa. Näyttelyn nimi oli "Ilosta kukkiva nainen", joka kuvasikin hyvin näyttelyn tunnelmaa. Näitä töitä on varmasti ollut ilo tehdä. Tekniikoita töissä riitti: etsauksia, akvatintaa, lehtikultaa, kuivapastellia, guassia, kollaasia ja paljon sekatekniikkaa. Etsaus ja akvatinta tuntuivat olevan useissa töissä pohjana, mutta siihen oli lisätty leikeltyjä palasia, piirrosta ja kullanvärisiä yksityiskohtia.

I just managed to visit this exhibition at its last day open: Hanna Varis' (b.1959) graphic works at Gallery Saskia. The exhibition was called "Woman Blooming With Joy", and this depicted finely the feeling of the exhibition. It must have been joyful to make this exhibition. There was really a lot of techniques in the works: etching, aquatint, golf leaf, dry pastel, gouache, collage and a lot of mixed media. Etching and aquatint seemed to be the basis in many works, but then there was added cut pieces of paper, drawing or details with gold.

MIIA & ROOSA IKIMERI -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

 Galleria Rongassa Tampereella on kaunis ja mielenkiintoinen näyttely. Grafiikkatyöt ovat Miia Ikimeren ja niihin liittyvät tekstit ovat Miian tyttären Roosan. Näyttelyssä voi kokea kahden eri ikäisen naisen tuntemuksia naisena olemisesta. Miia Ikimeren töissä naiset ovat usein alasti, paljaina, vartaloiden ääriviivat piirtyvät herkkinä ja hentoina, mutta silti vahvoina. Ja tekniikoissa on valittavaa: etsaus/akvatintoja, kartonkigrafiikkaa, chiné colleeta ja syanotypiaa.

There is a beautiful and interesting exhibition at Gallery Ronga in Tampere. The graphic works are by Miia Ikimeri and the related text by her daughter Roosa. You can experience in this exhibition sentiments of being woman by two women of different ages. In the graphics by Miia Ikimeri women are often naked, bare, the outlines of their bodies are delineated tender and fragile, but still strong. And there are technique to choose from: etching/aquatint, cardboard graphics (kartonkigrafiikka), ciné colle and cyanotype. 

PAPERIHUONE - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Galleria Villa Armaassa Kangasalla näin ihastuttavan grafiikan näyttelyn. Töissä näkyi koko grafiikan kirjo: puupiirroksia, etsauksia, akvarellimonotypioita, kaikenlaisia jännittäviä tekniikoiden yhdistelmiä ja kokeiluja. Näyttelyssä oli mukana noin  30 Paperihuone ry:n jäsentä. Paperihuone on 1998 Hämeenlinnassa perustettu grafiikan tekoon ja esittelyyn keskittyvä yhdistys. Grafiikan tekemisen innostus ja ilo näkyi näyttelyn töissä.

I saw a lovely graphic art exhibition at Gallery Villa Armas in Kangasala. There were visible the whole spectrum of graphics in these works: wood cuts, etchings, watercolour monotypes, all kind of exciting combinations and experiments of different techniques. About 30 members of Paperihuone ry (Paper Room group) were participating in this exhibition. Paperihuone is a group established in 1998 in Hämeenlinna, and it´s focusing on making and displaying graphic art. The enthusiasm and joy for making graphic art was visible in these works.

BANKSIDE GALLERY -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Yksi vakikohde Lontoossa käydessä on Tate Modernin lähellä oleva Bankside-galleria. Nytkin siellä oli esillä huima kattaus grafiikkaa kesänäyttelyssä. Tietenkin aina pysähdyn linopiirrosten kohdalle. Jeremy Blightonin isojen selkeiden linojen perspektiivi ja tunnelmat olivat nautittavat, kuten Liverpool Street Station. Fernando Feijoon The Curtain Raises (Esirippu nousee) oli täynnä yksityiskohtia teatteriesityksestä, ja tässäkin työssä perspektiivi hämmästytti. Meg Dutton sattui olemaan paikalla kertomassa tekniikastaan: etsaus, jonka hän värittää vesivärillä. Suurikokoiset koristeelliset ja yksityiskohtaiset työt muistuttivat koruja, ja niiden tekeminen on todella hidasta.

One of my favorite places visiting London is definitely Bankside Gallery near Tate Modern. And now there was an arresting collection of graphics in their Summer Exhibition. Of course, I always stop at the linocuts. The perspective and the atmosphere in Jeremy Blighton's large, clear-cut linos is enjoyable, like in Liverpool Street Station. Fernando Feijoo's Curtain Raises was full of details, and in this work also the perspective surprised. Meg Dutton happened to be at the place and demonstrated her technique: etching with watercoloured details. The huge decorative and detailed works resembled jewels. and the making of them is really slow.

Linocuts / Linopirroksia

JANNE LAINE & OUTI HEISKANEN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Taidekeskus Mätinrannan täyttävät Janne Laineen (s. 1970) heliogravyyri/akvatintat ja hänen yhdessä Outi Heiskasen (s. 1937)  kanssa toteuttamansa grafiikka. Tunnelma näyttelyssä on rauhallinen ja tyyni, mustavalkoinen, harmaa, vain hiukan väriä, paljon maisemia, puita ja yksityiskohtia luonnosta. Yhdessä Heiskasen kanssa tehdyissä suurikokoissa vedoksissa on enemmän fantasiaa ja mielikuvitusta. Yhteistyötä hyvin kuvaava teos on vedos puista: juuret maan alla Heiskasta, rungot Lainetta. Hienosti Laineen työt toistavat samaa teemaa moniosaisissa koko seinän peittävissä koosteissa.

Janne Laine's (b. 1970) heliograph/aquatints and graphics made together with Outi Heiskanen (b. 1937) fill The Art Center Mältinranta. The atmosphere in this exhibition is calm and serene, black and white, gray, just a bit of colour, a lot of landscapes, trees and details from the nature. There is more fantasy and imagination  in the large works made with Outi Heiskanen. One print of trees is very characteristic to their collaboration: the root below the ground are by Heiskanen and tree trunks by Laine. The large multi-piece works repeat finely one theme, usually trees and sky. 

KAIVERTAJA VASTAAN VEDOSTAJA / CARVER VERSUS PRINTER

Linoleikkauksessa minua on kiinnostanut mahdollisuus tehdä käsityönä teos alusta loppuun. Mitään koneita tai töiden teettämistä ulkopuolisilla ei ole tarvittu. Isoimpien linoleikkausteni vedostamisessa tosin olen käyttänyt apuna nurmikkojyrää, mutta ei sitäkään voi oikein koneeksi laskea. Nyt olen alkukesän aikana huomananut vain kaivertavani, uusia ja uusia linoleikkauksia. Linoleikkauksen aloitus sileälle linopalalle tuntuu jännittävältä ja sitten kuvan kaiverrus esiin vie mukanaan. Olen lisännyt suurimpaan linoleikkaukseeni jälleen yhden "kerroksen" eli kaksi palaa lisää niin, että siinä on nyt kahdeksan palaa ja lopullinen koko 80 x 60 cm. Lisäksi olen aloittanut uuden panoraamamallisen linon nyt 4-osaisena. Pienempiä kuvia syntyy ohessa, jopa jo joulukortteja. Pitäisi siirtyä vedostukseen ja se tuntuu nyt kuin vaihtaisi olomuotoaan kaivertajasta vedostajaksi. Maailma on ihan toinen: erilaiset värit, paperit (paksuus, pehmeys, kovuus, paino, värisävy), telat ja muut painamisen välineet. Taitaisin tarvita erillisen vedostajan, sillä tämä puoli linoleikkauksesta on ihan oma taiteenlajinsa ja vaatii ihan erilaista tietämystä ja tekotapaa kuin kaiverrus.

In linocutting I have been interested in the possibility to make the work by hand from the beginning to the end. There have not been any need for machines or ordering work from somewhere else. I have used a garden roller pulling my largest linocuts, but surely that is not considered as a machine. Now during the early summer I have noticed that I only carve and carve always new linocuts. It feel exciting to start the carving on a clean, smooth piece of lino, and then the carving takes the power. I have added still one new "layer" to my biggest linocut, which now has eight pieces and measures 80 X 60 cm. In addition I have started a new now 4-piece panorama linocut. Smaller linocuts are appearing on the side, even Christmas cards. Now I should move to printing, and it feels like changing your being from a carver to a printer. The world is quite like the other one: different colours, papers (thickness, softness, hardness, weight, hues), rollers, and other instruments for printing. I might need a separate printer, because this side of linocutting is quite an other form of art and it requires quite different kind of knowledge and way of working as carving.
