AALLON SÄRKYNYT PEILI / THE BROKEN MIRROR OF THE WAVE

 

Kolmas versio lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on kala, joka on pulassa. Kalaa ajaa takaa parvi pieniä kaloja, ja joukossa on voimaa. Krotti yrittää uida hentojen meriheinien suojaan, tuskin onnistuu kun tuo lyhtykin loistaa kirkkaana. Kala on punamusta linopiirros, pikkukalat punaisia pieniä linopiirroksia ja vesi pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Tämä kalakuva sai nimen Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta." Peili aallon särkyneen viistoon katsoo kaukaiseen".

The third version of the lantern fish is a fish in trouble. The fish is being chased by a flock of small fish, and there is strength among them. The lantern fish tries to swim to the shelter of the soft sea grasses, but it barely succeeds when that lantern shines brightly. The fish is a red-black linocut, the small fish are small red linocuts and the water is a soft pastel. The size of the picture is 24 x 36 cm. This fish picture got its name from Eila Kivikk'aho's poem "A mirror broken by a wave looks diagonally into the distance".

PENTTI KASKIPURO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Poikettiin Pentti Kaskipuron (1930-20109 metalligrafiikan näyttelyssä Sara Hildénin taidemuseolla. Esillä oli iso museo täynnä, valtava määrä pieniä töitä, kuivaneuloja suuri osa. 1950- luvun Helsinki-maisemat vaihtuivat jo 1960-luvulta 2000 asti punajuuriin, sipuleihin, makkaroihin ja limppuihin. Kuvat olivat tummempia kuin kuvittelin, mutta ah niin rauhallisia ja seesteisiä, kuin kuiskauksia nykyisen maailman sotiin, diktaattoreihin ja melskeeseen verrattuna. Suomen talvinen mustavalkoinen maisema ikkunoista sopi hyvin mustavalkoisten töiden lomaan.

We stopped by the exhibition of Pentti Kaskipuro's (1930-20109) metal graphics at the Sara Hildén Art Museum. The large museum was full, a huge number of small works, most of them drypoints. The Helsinki landscapes of the 1950s changed from the 1960s to 2000 to beetroot, onions, sausages and bread rolls. The images were darker than I imagined, but oh so peaceful and serene, like whispers compared to the wars, dictators and chaos of today's world. The Finnish winter landscape in black and white from the windows was a perfect match for the black and white works.

LÄPI AALTOJEN / THROUGH THE WAVES

 

Toinen versioni lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on vihreä. Kalan lyhty valaisee meren pohjaa, vain pari meriruohoa huojuu vedessä. Tämä krotti on mustavalkoinen vedos kun ensimmäinen versioni oli punamusta. Vesi on pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Kala sai nimensä Sirkka Seljan runosta: "Läpi aaltojen villien, kimaltavain uin vedoin notkein ja voimakkain meren vihreitä äärettömyyksiä päin".

The second version of the lantern fish is green. The fish's lantern illuminates the seabed, with only a couple of seaweeds swaying in the water. This croaker is a black and white print, while the first version was red and black.  Water is soft pastel, The size of the image is 24 x 36 cm. The fish got its name from Sirkka Selja's poem: "Through the waves' wild, glittering strokes, I swim, with supple and powerful strokes, towards the green immensities of the sea."

LUONAS KAI OLLA SAAN / I HOPE I CAN STAY WITH YOU

 

Jotain tästä sydämistä ja pilvistä vielä puuttui, mutta mitä? Lintuja tietenkin! Yksi iso linopiirroslintu - ehkä merikotka liihotteli Pispalan yllä. Mutta kotka näytti yksinäiseltä. Rakkaus eli sydämenkuvat taivaalla vaativat kavereita. Ja tulihan niitä, pieniä linopiirroslintuja - ehkä pääskysiä kokonainen parvi kaartamaan kuvan vasenta reunaa kotkaa kohti. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Nimi on Juicen musiikista; "Luonas kai olla saan".

Something was still missing from this picture of hearts and cloud, but what? Birds of course! One big linocut bird - maybe an eagle hovered over Pispala. But the eagle looked lonely. Love, or heart images in the sky, needed friends. And then there were those, small linocut birds - maybe a whole flock of swallows, curving the left edge of the picture towards the eagle. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The name is from Juice's music; "Luonas kai olla saan" / "I Hope I Can Stay With You".

Englantilaisen kissamaalauksiin erikoistuneen Adrianne Lesterin ( 1870-1955) viktoriaaninen "suklaarasiamaalaus" on nimeltään "Kylpyaika" / "Bath Time". Maalauksessa on kaunis, lämmin ruskea sävy. Kaikilla neljällä kissalla on rusetit kaulassa. Äitikissa katselee hiukan huolestuneena poikastensa kylpyhommia. Ammeessa ei näytä olevan vettä, vain pari ruohonkortta. Mikäs sen parempaa - kissat eivät pidä kylpemisestä!

The Victorian "chocolate box painting" by the English cat painter Adrianne Lester (1870-1955) is called "Bath Time". The painting has a beautiful, warm brown tone. All four cats have bows around their necks. The mother cat watches her kittens bathe with some concern. There doesn't seem to be any water in the tub, just a couple of blades of grass. What could be better - cats don't like baths!

SYDÄMIÄ JA PILVIÄ : 1 / HEARTS & CLOUDS: 1

 

Työhuoneen nurkassa lojui jo aika kauan sekatekniikkatyö pilvistä, jotka muodostavat taivaalle sinisiä sydämenkuvia. Olin nähnyt tällaisen ilmiön taivaalla (tosin vain yhden sydämen) ja yritin sitä tulkita yhdistämällä siihen linopiirroksen Pispalasta ja haukasta. Jotenkin se tuntui valjulta - siitä puuttui jotakin. Otinkin sen taas työpöydälle pilvisenä päivänä. Miten toimisi jos lisäisinkin taivaanrantaan hiukan väriä, violettia. Kesken tämä on vieläkin.

A mixed media work of clouds forming blue heart shapes in the sky had been lying in the corner of my study for quite some time. I had seen such a phenomenon in the sky (although only one heart) and I tried to interpret it by combining it with a linocut of Pispala and a hawk. Somehow it felt empty - something was missing. So I took it back to my desk on a cloudy day. How would it work if I added a little color, purple, to the horizon. This is still in progress.

OMA PAIKKA / OWN PLACE

 

Ihanaa saada tällainen kuva oman työn paikasta uudessa kodissaan. Ystäväni Maritta hankki "Vedestä nousee kasvi"- linopiirros/pastellin. Kuva on nyt makuuhuoneen seinällä lukunurkkauksessa. Mikä hieno paikka! Maritta kertoo näkevänsä taulun ensimmäisenä herätessään.

It's wonderful to have a picture like this of the place where your work is in its new home. My friend Maritta bought a "Plant Rising from the Water" linocut/pastel. The picture is now on the bedroom wall in the reading corner. What a great place! Maritta says that she sees the picture first thing when she wakes up.

TYYNI VESI / CALM WATER

 

Tein linopiirroksen lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista yhtä isompaa sekatekniikkatyötä varten. Vedostin muutaman krotin yksinään paperille, ja kala näytti niin yksinäiseltä, että halusin tehdä sille taustan pastelliväreillä. Lyhtykalan keltainen lamppu valaiseen tietä aaltojen alla. Tämä kuva sai nimekseen "Kalvo tyynen veden kantajaansa kuvastaa" yhdestä Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta. Kuvan koko on 36 x 24 cm.

I made a linocut of a lanternfish for a larger mixed media work. I printed a few lanternfish on paper by themselves, and the fish looked so lonely that I wanted to make a background for it in pastel colors. The yellow lamp of the lanternfish lights the way under the waves. This image was named "Kalvo tyynen veden kantajaansa kuvastaa" (The Film of Calm Water Reflects Its Carrier) from one of Eila Kivikk'aho's poems.THe size of the picture is 36 x 24 cm.

AAMUYÖSSÄ AISTEIN AVOIMIN /IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING WITH MY SENSES OPEN

 

Sekatekniikkatyön aloitus on aina jännittävää ja samalla innostavaa. On vain tyhjä paperi ja aluksi tässä kuvassa linopiirros paperin alaosassa. Pispala-maiseman yllä kaartuu taivas, mutta mitä sinne tulee? Nyt taivaalle lensi linopiirroslintuja, kuu ja punaisia ja valkoisia pastellipilviä. Kuvan koko on 105 x 60 cm. Nimenkin työ jo sai: "Aamuyössä aistein avoimin elämääni silmiin katselin" Juice Leskisen Balladi elokuvasta Klaani.

The beginning of a mixed media work is always exciting and inspiring at the same time. There is only blank paper and at the beginning in this picture a linocut at the bottom of the paper. The sky curves above the Pispala landscape, but what is there? Now linocut birds, the moon and red and white pastel clouds flew into the sky. The size of the picture is 105 x 60 cm. The work has already been given a name: "In the Early Hours Of the Morning With My Senses Open I looked My Life In the Eye"  from Juice Leskinen's Ballad from the movie The Clan.

Sarah Maycockin vesivärimaalauksessa keltakirjava kissa nukkuu makoisia päiväunia avoimella kirjan sivulla. Kirja näyttää olevan vanha ja sen sivut pehmeitä kuin tyyny. Ensikatsomalla kuvasta ei ihan helposti erota kissaa, jonka etutassut ovat kippurassa lähinnä katsojaa. Maalaus on tehty nopeilla vedoilla ja värit ovat herkullisen kellanruskeat. Kissan viikset sojottavat ylöspäin ja nenäpää on punainen, ainut erivärinen kohta maalauksessa.

In Sarah Maycock's watercolor painting, a yellow-spotted cat takes a sweet nap on the open page of a book. The book appears to be old and its pages are as soft as a pillow. At first glance, it's hard to tell the cat apart, with its front paws curled up closest to the viewer. The painting is done with quick strokes and the colors are deliciously yellow-brown. The cat's whiskers stick up and the tip of its nose is red, the only different color in the painting.

Tässä nyt taitaa olla jo jonkun aikaa työn alla ollut punavalkoinen taivas kuineen ja lintuineen. Alaosan neliosainen linopiirros on aika täynnä tavaraa: Pispalan portaita, lintuja ja kissa kuplissaan sekä tietenkin taloja. Kymmenen isompaa lintua ja epämääräinen liuta ihan pieniä lintuja ovat linopiirroksia. Suurin linnuista on pöllö kissa selässään ja muutama lintu on saanut punaista väriä siipiinsä. Kuu on kultainen ja välkähtelee kivasti valon osuessa siihen. Punainen, sininen ja valkoinen taivas on pehmeää pastellia ja kokoahan tälle tuli: 105 x 60 cm. Nimi vielä puuttuu, kiva vaihe sekin tehdä kuvaa.

Here is a red and white sky with clouds and birds that has been in the works for some time now. The four-part linocut in the lower part is quite full of stuff: Pispala's stairs, birds and a cat in their bubble and of course houses. Ten larger birds and a vague flock of very small birds are linocuts. The largest of the birds is an owl with a cat on its back and a few birds have got red paint on their wings. The moon is golden and shimmers nicely when the light hits it. The red, blue and white sky is a soft pastel and the size for this one is: 105 x 60 cm. The name is still missing, it's also a nice step to make a picture.

Olisikohan tämä punainen ja valkoinen pastellitaivas pilvineen, lintuineen ja kuineen vihdoin valmis. Ihan hämmästyttävää, miten monta kertaa lisäsin punaista pilviin ja miten monta kertaa taas lisäsin valkoista pilviin. Kilpailivatko punainen ja valkoinen keskenään? Melkoisen värillisiä noista pilvistä lopulta tuli. Jospa vielä hiukan korjaisin....

I wonder if this red and white pastel sky with birds, moon and clouds is finally finished. It's amazing how many times I added red to the clouds and how many times I added white to the clouds. Did the red and white compete with each other? Those clouds ended up being quite colorful. If only I could fix them a little more....

SINISTÄ TAIVAALLE: 5 / BLUE TO THE SKY: 5

Punaisen lisäksi pastellitaivaalla pilkistää nyt muutama palanen myös sinistä taivasta. Kokeilen myös kultaisen kuun ympärille tummemman sinistä taivasta. Tuntuu, että kuu tummemmalla pohjalla olisi hehkuvampi.

In addition to the red, there are now a few bits of blue sky peeking through the pastel sky. I'm also trying a darker blue sky around the golden moon. It feels like the moon would glow more on a darker background.

Tässä kortissa huomio ensin kiinnittyy harmonisiin väreihin, ruskeaa, beigeä ja valkoista sekä hiukan vihreää. Valkoinen pieni kissa on naisen sylissä, melkein hukkuneena suureen villatakkiin. Pyöreä kattolamppu, kukkaruukku ja naisen housut erottuvat myös valkoisina valopilkkuina. Kuvan tekijä on Kanadassa asuva kuvittaja Yelena Bryksenkova.

In this card, the first thing that catches your eye are the harmonious colors of brown, beige and white, with a little green. A small white cat is in the woman's arms, almost drowning in a large wool coat. The round ceiling lamp, the flower pot and the woman's trousers also stand out as white spots of light. The artist of the image is Yelena Bryksenkova, an illustrator living in Canada.

PUNAISTA TAIVASTA : 4 / RED SKY: 4

 

Pispalan ylle lintujen taakse alkoi nyt muodostua aika punainen taivas. Kaikki muu on linopiirroksia paitsi taivas pehmeää pastellia. Aion jättää keskelle vaaleamman alueen ja punaiset pilvet kasautuvat kuvan reunoille. Mutta pitäisikö taivaan olla kuun ympärillä vaalea vai tumma?

A pretty red sky is now starting to form behind the birds over the top of the Pispala ridge. Everything else is linocuts except for the sky in soft pastel. I'm going to leave a lighter area in the middle and the red clouds will gather at the edges of the picture. But should the sky around the moon be light or dark?

ANTTI HOLMA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Himmelblaun galleriassa Tampereella käytiin ihastumassa Antti Holman suuriin värillisiin puupiirroksiin. Hän on kehittänyt ihan oman tapansa tehdä grafiikkaansa, hyvä video näyttelyssä. Mieleen tulee underground -taide, kantaaottavat julisteet, sarjakuvat, expressionismi. Oudossa maailmassa seikkailevat rohkeat naiset, sudet ja gorillat. Gorilla + taidemaalari -kuvasta on näyttelyssä originaali kaiverrettu laatta ja kaksi erilaista vedostusta siitä.

Kiehtova kokemus, iso suositus!

We visited the Himmelblau gallery in Tampere and were amazed by Antti Holma's large colored woodcuts. He has developed his own way of making his graphics, a good video in the exhibition. Underground art, opinionated posters, comics, expressionism come to mind. Brave women, wolves and gorillas adventure in a strange world. The exhibition features an original engraved plate and two different prints of the Gorilla + Painter image. A fascinating experience, highly recommended!
