Seitsemän Lumikkia ja Kääpiö - näyttely / Seven Snow Whites and a Dwarf - exhibition

Heinäkuun alussa 2019 aukeaa Kuusamossa naivistinen yhteisnäyttely Seitsemän Lumikkia ja Kääpiö, jossa on ilo olla mukana. Esa Leppänen eli Kääpiö pitää Kuusamossa vanhassa koulurakennuksessa 100 taulun galleriaansa, ja tämä näyttely on gallerian yhteydessä. Esa pyysi näyttelyyn mukaan seitsemän naivistia, kaikki jostain syystä naisia. Näyttelyssä ovat Esan ja minun lisäksi mukana Virpi Majuri, Kikka Nyrén, Virve Niemi, Minna Lehväslaiho, Outi Markkanen ja Pirkko Pullinen-Valtonen. Näyttely on auki heinäkuun loppuun asti. Tervemenoa jos liikut Kuusamossa päin!

A Naïve Art exhibition, Seven Snow Whites and a Dwarf is opening at the beginning of July in Kuusamo, and I´m happy to be in. Esa Leppänen i.e. the dwarf is keeping his 100 pictures gallery at an old school building, and this exhibition is part of the gallery. Esa asked along seven Naïve artists, and they are all women for some reason. At this exhibiton there are exhibited along Esa and myself also  Virpi Majuri, Kikka Nyrén, Virve Niemi, Minna Lehväslaiho, Outi Markkanen ja Pirkko Pullinen-Valtonen. The exhibition is open until the end of July. Have a nice trip if you happen to travel around Kuusamo!

ANDY WARHOL - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tampere-talossa on Andy Warholin (1928-1987) julisteiden näyttely, yli 100 julistetta. Osassa julisteita on käytetty jo ennestään tuttuja silkkipainotöitä, mm. Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor tai monenvärisenä nähty kukka-aihe . Mutta suurimmassa osassa julisteita kuvana on ainakin minulle ihan uusia graafisia töitä: Elvis, Ingrid Bergman, H.C Andersen ja jopa pari kissaa lehmien lisäksi. Warhol oli erinomainen pelkistäjä, ihailen hänen tyyliään varioida väripintoja ja väripintojen muotoja yhdistettynä piirrosjälkiin. Tästä ei julistetaide ole oikein myöhemmin kehittynyt. Warholin halu ja kyky toimia työryhmässä tai ryhmissä on mielenkiintoinen. Joidenkin töiden kohdalla taitaa olla vaikea määritellä, mikä oikein on Warholin kädenjälkeä ja mikä jonkun muun. Mutta lopputuloksen voi hyvin ymmärtää Warholina. Tämä suuri alkuperäisten julisteiden kokoelma on lainassa Saksasta MK&G (Museum Für Kunst und Gewerbe) -museosta Hampurista.

In Tampere-talo there is an exhibition of Andy Warhol´s (1928-1987) posters, over hundred on them. Rather familiar silk screen works are used in some of the posters, like Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor or flower theme seen in many colours. But in most posters the picture is at least to me more unfamiliar graphic works: Elvis, Ingrid Bergman, H.C. Andersen and even two cats and cows. Warhol was an excellent reducer, I admire his ability to vary colour surfaces and the shapes of these surfaces combined with the marks of drawing. The poster art has not really developed a lot from these.  Warhol´s ability and desire to work in group or groups is interesting. It is perhaps quite hard to define in some pictures which is done by Warhol and which by someone else. But the final product is easy to see as a work by Warhol. This large collection of original posters is on lone from MK&G (Museum Für Kunst und Gewerbe) museum in Hamburg, Germany. 

DUETTO / DUET

Tein aiemmin linopiirroksen kissasta, joka soittaa ukulelea. Nyt sille tuli kaveri: bluesia soittava kissa metallikitaroineen. Vedostin tämän blueskissan ja dueton vanhalle nuottipaperille.

I made earlier a linocut of a cat playing an ukulele. Now she got a friend: a cat playing metallic blues guitar. I printed this blues cat and duet on a piece of old note paper.

Stig Janssonin (s. 1936) naivistisessa kissamaalauksessa ylpeä isäkissa tuo suussaan perheelleen ruokaa, hiiren. Perhe: äiti ja kaksi kissanpoikaa katsovat ihmeissään silmät suurina. Mahtaakohan yksi hiiri ja lautasellinen maitoa ihan riittää? Tämä on varmaan kuva perinteisestä ydinperheestä: vanhemmat ja kaksi lasta, isä hankkii elannon. Takana on suomalainen vihreä kesäinen peltomaisema ja yksi lato. Taivas näyttää autereiselta, onkohan tässä kyseessä juhannus, suomalainen yötön yö?

In this Stig Jansson´s (b. 1936) Naïve cat painting a proud father cat is bringing some food for his family: a mouse. The family: a mother and two kittens are amazed with their eyes open. Could one mouse and a bowl of milk be quite enough? This is probably a picture of a so called nuclear family: parents and two children, father providing the livelihood. A green Finnish landscape of fields and one barn is spreading in the background. The sky is pale, is this perhaps Midsummer, Finnish nightless night.

BLUESKISSA / BLUES CAT

Linopiirros blueskitaraa näppäilevästä kissasta on oikeastaan "tilaustyö", josta on tarkoitus tehdä t-paita. Mustalla kissalla on lierihattu ja metallikantinen kitara, jota voisi kokeilla myös värittää hopeavärillä.

This linocut of a cat picking a blues guitar is actually a "commission". The purpose is to order a t-shirt with this picture on. The clack cat is wearing a brimmed hat and a guitar with a metallic cover, which I might to try colouring with silver.

Finlayson Art Area FAA 2019

Tämän kesän FAAn eli Finlayson Art Arean ehdoton tähti minulle oli Inari Krohn (s. 1945). Hänen puupiirros/viivasyövytyksensä oli Himmelblaun grafiikan pajan parvekkeella: herkkiä luontoaiheita, kasveja, puita, lintuja. Ison näyttelyhallin perälle levittäytyivat vesivärityöt ja uudemmat öljymaalaukset mdf-levylle. Vesiväritöissä toistuivat kasvi- ja kukka-aiheet ja monet japanilaisvaikutteet. Öljyvärityöt olivat hiukan painavampia, maisemia toistuvista kukkuloista ja vuorenseinämistä monen värisine peltoineen. Maisematkin näyttivät hiukan itämaisilta tai välimerellisiltä . Muuten FAA:n lukuisat abstraktit työt, valokuvat tai maalatut skeittilaudat paraatipaikoilla eivät nyt oikein innostaneet. Ruotsalaisen kuvanveistäjän Roland Perssonin (s. 1963) suuri silikoninorsu  sopi vanhaan tehdashalliin, ja hintakin sai suun auki: 50.000 euroa. Hannu Riikosen (s. 1945) neljään suuntaan kurkottelevat värikkäät puuveistokset lymyilivät siellä täällä kulmien takana, oli kiva tavata niitä!

Inari Krohn (b. 1945) was definitely the star of this summer's FAA (Finlayson Art Area) exhibition. Her woodcut/etchings were on the balcony of the Himmelblau Graphic Workroom: delicate nature themed pictures, plants, birds and trees. The Watercolour paintings and new oil paintings on mdf plates were at the back of an old factory hall. The watercolours were repeating plant and flower themes and also some Japanese influences. The oil paintings were a bit heavier, landscapes of rolling hills and mountain sides with multicoloured fields. Even these landscapes seemed a bit Oriental or Mediterranean. On the other hand many of the abstract works, photographs or painted skateboards did not inspire me at this time. Swedish sculptor Roland Persson's (b. 1963) huge silicone elephant suited fine in the old factory surroundings, and even the price made me open-mouthed: 50,000 euros. Hannu Riikonen's (b. 1945) four-way gazing colourful wooden sculptures were lurking around the corners, nice to have met them!

Kikka Nyrénin (s. 1951) kissamaalaukset Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyissä ovat ilahduttaneet jo vuosia. Aika monissa hänen kissakuvissaan on äidillinen aihe, kissa on ison poikaslauman hellä äiti. Niin on tässäkin kortissa "Viisi pientä ihmettä". Iso kissa on selvästi viiden pienen poikasen äiti. Äitikissan vihreissä silmissä on lämpöä ja kaiken kestävää lempeyttä. Yksi poikasista kiskoo äitinsä hännästä ja muut täyttävät kaikki kolot jalkojen välissä. Olen aina ihaillut Nyrénin taitoa luoda koristeellisia pintoja ja kuvioita kuten tässä taustan lehdet ja alareunan kukkareunus sekä ison kissan turkin karvat.

Kikka Nyrén's (b. 1951) cat paintings at Naive Artists in IIttala exhibitions have delighted me already for years. There is a motherly theme in many of her cat pictures. a cat is a tender mother for a big bunch of kittens. So is it also in this card called "Five Little Wonders". The big cat is clearly the mother of five little kittens. There is warmth and all enduring tenderness in the green eyes of the mother cat. One of the kittens is pulling on her mother´s tail, and the other kittens are filling all the space between their mother´s legs. I have always admired Nyrén's ability to create decorative surfaces and patterns like here the leaves at the background and the flower border at the bottom and also the hairs of fur of the big cat.

KISSAT PIKNIKILLÄ / CATS ON PICNIC

Linopiirros kissoista piknikillä Pyynikin näkötornilla on nyt mielstäni valmis. Kaiversin kissojen ympärille vaaleamman alueen, ja nyt kissat erottuvat taustastaan paremmin. Linon koko on 20 x 30 cm, siis sopiva alaosa sekatekniikka-sarjaani taivasta, pilviä, kuu, perhosia ja mitä vielä.

Linocut of cats on a picnic at the Pyynikki obsrvation tower is now ready - I think. I carved more light area around the cats and now they are better standing out from the background. The size of this lino is 20 x 30 cm, so it´s suitable for my series of mixed media works of skies, clouds, moon, butterflies and what else.

KISSAT PIKNIKILLÄ -KOEVEDOS / CATS AT PICNIC - PROOF PRINT

Koevedos linopiirroksesta Kissat piknikillä Pyynikin näkötornilla näyttää hyvin, että kuva on liian tumma etenkin kissojen ympärillä. Kissat eivät erota tarpeeksi. Nyt pitää sitten kaivertaa lisää männynneulasia puihin - mutta varoa ettei kaiverra liikaa.

The proof print of my linocut of Cats on Picnic at Pyynikki Observation Tower shows clearly, that the picture is too dark especially around the cats. The cats are not visible enough. Now I have to carve more pine needles on the trees - but carefully so that I would not carve too much.

Kuriton kisu (Mischievous Kitty) on amerikkalainen 1800-luvun mainoskortti. Kuva on tehty E.G. Southwick & Co -nimiselle firmalle, jonka toimialaa kortin perusteella on mahdoton päätellä. Kuvan tekijä on John H. Bufford (1810-1870). Huonosti käyttäytyvä kissa on hypännyt pöydälle ja varastanut kalan lapsen lautaselta. Kissa on ryntäämässä karkuun kun lapsi on tarttunut sen häntään ja hurja ilme kasvoillaan kiskoo kissaa hännästä. Maito on kaatunut pöydälle ja kohta varmaan koko pöytäliina kissoineen on lattialla. Lapsi on sidottu turvallisesti tuoliinsa sinisellä liinalla. Painotekniikka tässä vanhassa kortissa on ollut litografia, josta näkyvät hauskasti värien painojäljet, pilkut.

Mischievous Kitty is an American advertising trade card for a firm called E.G. Southwick & Co, but the line of business of this firm is impossible to conclude from this card. John H. Bufford (1819-1879) is the artist. The mischievous cat has jumped on the table and grabbed a fish from the child's plate. The cat is rushing away and the child is catching on her tail and pulling it with a ferocious expression on his face. The milk has toppled over on the table and surely the whole tablecloth with the cat and all is soon on the floor. The child has been tied securely to the chair with a blue scarf. The printing technique on this old card is lithograph, from which are finely visible the printing marks, dots.

ILONTUOJAT ALAVUDELLA - NÄYTTELY / BRINGING JOY IN ALAVUS -EXHIBITION

Tänään aukeaa Suomen Naivistit ry:n kesänäyttely "Ilontuojat Alavudella" taidekeskus Harrissa Alavudella. On siellä kolme omaakin linotyötäni: Naurava kuu, Tuulensuojassa ja Ylös Tahmelan portaita. Keksin laittaa taulujen takapuolelle pikatatuoinnin, joka tarttui ihan hyvin pahvitaustaankin - jonkinlainen logo tai puumerkki siis. Näyttelyjulisteen kaunis kuva  on Reijo Kivijärven maalauksesta.

Naïve Artists of Finland Association's (Suomen Naivistit ry) summer exhibition "Bringing Joy in Alavus" is opening today at Art Center Harri in Alavus. There are even my three linocuts: Laughing Moon, Sheltered from the Wind and Up the Tahmela Steps. I discovered I could attach an instant tattoo on the backsides of the linos, and it stuck quite ok also on the cardboard - some kind of logo or a maker's mark. The beautiful picture of the exhibition flyer is from a painting by Reijo Kivijärvi.

PIKNIK PYYNIKIN NÄKÖTORNILLA / PICNIC AT THE PYYNIKKI OBSERVATION TOWER

Aina kun aloitan uuden linopiirroksen kaiverrusta, aion kerrankin luonnostella kuvan valmiiksi, juuri sellaiseksi kuin sen pitäisi olla valmiina. Muuta sitten käy niin kuin tämänkin työn kanssa: luonnos unohtuu ja kuva syntyy kaivertaessa. Kaikenlaisia yllätyksiä tulee eteen: miten oikein saisi esiin männynoksien kuvion? Miten järven vesi oikein erottuisi puista? Ovatko taustan talot liian isoja - no perspektiivin suhteen kyllä ovat, mutta niitä oli kiva kaivertaa. Ja erottuuko vedostetussa kuvassa, että kissat tässä nyt ovat jossain korkealla Pyynikin näkötornin huipulla?

Always when I´m starting a new linocut I intend to sketch the picture ready, just like it should be when the carving is ready. But then it happens as always also with this work: the sketch is forgotten and the picture is born carving it. All kind of surprises appear: how could I get right the patterns of the pine branches? How would the pattern of lake water separate from the trees? Are the houses in the background too big - well, according to the perspective they are, but they were nice to carve. And is it even visible in the final print, that the cats really are somewhere high at the top of the Pyynikki observation tower?

Linot uusiin koteihinsa /Liinos to their new home

Aina on yhtä hieno tunne kun linopiirros löytää uuden kodin! Nyt on kaksi isoa linopiirrosta matkalla kehystykseen ja sitä kautta uusiin koteihinsa. Tässä vaiheessa töihin syntyy jonkunlainen etäisyys, uudet omistajat voivat nähdä kuvissa jotain ihan omia tunnelmia tai muistoja ja linot alkavat elää omaa elämäänsä. Se on aika hienoa!

It´s always a fine feeling when a linocut finds a new home! Now two of my larger linos are on their way to be framed and then to their new homes. At this stage a some kind of distance is developing to these works, the new owners might see some of their own feelings or memories in the pictures, and the linos start to live their own life. That is quite nice!

Paljon yksinkertaisemmin ei kissan naamaa voisi piirtää. Tämä näyttää ihan lapsen tekemältä, ja tekijätietona on vain AP Studio - siis opiskelijatyö. Kissan iloinen ilme on saatu aikaan hauskoilla poskilla ja nappisilmillä. Vasemman reunan leveämpi viiva tekee kuvaan hiukan syvyyttä.

You could not draw a cat's face more simply. This looks like it was drawn by a child, and the information of the maker is only AP Studio - so some kind of a student work. The cheerful expression of the cat has been accomplished with  fun cheeks and button eyes. The broad line on the left side brings some depth to the picture.
