I stopped over at gallery Saskia in Tampere at an art exhibition, and it was charming: Helmi Koiviola´s (b. 1950) graphic works. The technique is etching and aquatint, which there are on a paper several layers on top of each other. The layering constructs countless shades of colours,
mainly brown, green, blue and black. The atmosphere in the pictures is quite fairy-tale-like, gentle. People are tinkering with their everyday chores, in the surroundings there is a lot of nature, water, wind, light, and animals. I felt some confluence with Outi Heiskanen´s and Hugo Simberg´s graphic works and Tove Jansson´s Moomin books. There is kind of delicate symbolism, which the viewer can easily interpret along his/hers own experience and feelings. What is the meaning of the shapes of the blowing flowers in many pictures, parachutes of dandelions or something quite else?
