Kissa se on leijonakin! Ainakaan tässä Rembrandtin mustepiirroksessa ruskealle paperille noin vuodelta 1660 ei ole mitään pelottavaa. Muutamalla musteen pyyhkäisyllä Rembrandt on luonut kuvan hiukan uneliaasta ja pehmeästä eläimestä. Kuvan nimi on Makaava leijona, katse oikealle (yksityiskohta). Näin tämän työn kokonaisena leijonana (alla) pari vuotta sitten näyttelyssä National Galleryssä Lontoossa. Mestariteos!

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

Even a lion is a cat! At least there nothing frightening in this ink drawing on a brown paper from around 1660 by Rembrandt. Rembrandt has created this picture of a little sleepy and soft animal. The name of the drawing is Recumbent Lion, facing Right (detail). I saw the whole of this drawing (below) a couple of years ago in an exhibition in the National Gallery, London, A masterpiece!

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

Recumbent Lion, facing Right, about 1660-5 (Makaava leijona, katse oikealle, noin 1660-5) on merkitty tämän kortin nimeksi. Kuulostaa melko kylmältä ja tieteelliseltä, museomaiselta. Kuva on Rembrandtin (1606-1669) ruskealle paperille ruskealla musteella piirtämä  leijona. Leijonan pää on suhteettoman suuri, mikä korostaa sen voimaa. Mutta takajalat päpertyvät pieninä kuin sukulaisellaan kissalla. Kaunis ja ilmeikäs piirros muutamalla mustekynän vedolla!

Recumbent Lion, facing Right, about 1660-5 is the name of this card. It sounds rather cold and scientific, museum-like. The picture is Rembrandt´s (1606-1669) drawing of a lion with brown ink on brown paper. The head of the lion is disproportionately large, which emphasizes it´s power. But the hind legs curl up small just like it´s relative cat´s paws. A beautiful and expressive drawing with a few pen lines.

REMBRANDT: MYÖHÄISKAUDEN TYÖT / REMBRANDT: THE lATE WORKS

En ole aiemmin oikein innostunut Rembrandtin töistä - tummia, jäykkiä muotokuvia. Mutta tämä näyttely National Galleryssa Lontoossa avasi silmät. Nämä Rembrandt van Rijnin (1606-1669 ) myöhäiskauden työt koskettivat. Omakuvissa oli rehellisyyttä, aitoutta, kärsimystä, raadollisuuttakin. Värin ja siveltimen käyttö ei ole tästä paljonkaan kehittynyt. Vertaukset vaikkapa Van Goghiin eivät ole vääriä. Erilaisten materiaalien pinnan voi maalauksissa melkein tuntea: karheaa kangasta, pehmeää turkista, kovaa kultakoristelua, koruja. Näyttelyssä lomittuvat hienosti suurikokoiset maalaukset ja pienet grafiikan työt. Etsaukset hurmasivat. Rembrandtin viiva on mestarillinen. Joissakin töissä kuva näyttää ensin melkein mustalta, mutta lähempää katsoen valo on loihdittu esiin kuin taiottuna. 


I have not been enthusiastic about Rembrandt´s works earlier - dark, stiff portraits. But this exhibition in National Gallery, London opened my eyes. Rembrandt van Rijn´s (1606-1669) late works really touched. The

self portraits were honest, pure, suffering, even unscrupulous. The use of colour and brush has not developed much from this. Comparisons for example to van Gogh are justified.
You can almost feel the different materials in the paintings: rough cloth, soft fur, hard gold decoration, jewels. The large paintings and small etchings are finely interlaced in the exhibition. The etchings enchanted me. Rembrandt´s line is masterly. In some works the picture seems to be totally black, but when you look closer the light has been conjured up magically.
