Kissakortti: 667 / Cat Card: 667 - Marc Burchardt

 

Valkoisella kissalla toinen silmä on keltainen ja toinen sininen. Kissa katsoo itsetietoisesti, rauhakllisesti ja ylväästi häntä etutassun alla suojassa. Varuillaan on kyllä syytä olla, sillä vasemmalta kuvaan syöksyy hurjan näköinen keltaraitainen kissa kuin tiikeri. Se on jo kaatanut pöydän, rikkonut kukkamaljakon ja irvistää taistelunhaluisena. Kuvan on maalannut amerikkalinen Marc Burchardt (s. 1962). Kuva voisi olla kortti, mutta se onkin CD-levyn kansi. Musiikin on tehnyt Mitski (Mitsuki Miyawaki), amerikkalainen naislaulaja/lauluntekijä.

A white cat has one eye yellow and the other blue. The cat looks self-consciously, calmly and proudly with the tail sheltered under its front paw. There is reason to be wary, because a fiercely looking yellow-striped cat like a tiger rushes into the picture from the left. It has already knocked over a table, broken a flower vase and is grimacing with a desire to fight. The picture was painted by the American Marc Burchardt (b. 1962). The picture could be a card, but it is actually the cover of a CD. The music was composed by Mitski (Mitsuki Miyawaki), an American female singer/songwriter.

Pispalan ylle kaartuu nyt keltainen pastellitaivas, ehkä auringonlaskua tai nousua. Linopiirros sudenkorennosta näyttää nyt tosi isolta, mutta minäkö välittäisin perspektiivistä - no en!

PISPALA JA SUDENKORENNOT / PISPALA AND DRAGONFLIES : 1

 Jälleen on aluillaan uusi sekatekniikkatyö isompaan sarjaani (70 x 40 cm). Tässä kuvassa on alaosassa linopiirros Pispalan harjusta, ja haulitorni on väritetty punaiseksi. Lisäsin taivaalle jo kolme pientä sudenkorentoa. Seuraavaksi pastellia ja väriä taivaalle.

I'm starting a new mixed media work for my larger series (70 x 40 cm). In this picture, there is a linocut of Pispala ridge at the bottom, and the shot tower is colored red. I've already added three small dragonflies to the sky. Next, pastel and color to the sky.

TUUKKA PELTONEN & TOMMI SARKAPALO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Galleria Saskiassa Tampereella on vielä muutaman päivän ajan avoinna Tuukka Peltosen ja Tommi Sarkapalon taidenäyttely. Tuukka Peltosen töitä olin nähnyt aiemmin mm. Himmelblaussa, ja niitä halusin nähdä enemmän. Hän kaivertaa puupiirroksia ja tosi monivärisiä. Kuvat on vedostettu ohuelle japanilaiselle paperille, ja ne ovat suuritöisiä ja jotkut isojakin. Värikerroksia on paljon. Kuvissa on usein aika yksinäisen näköisiä nuorehkoja ihmisiä, pukeutuminen ja hiukset kuin 80-luvun rocktähdillä. Joissakin kuvissa on hienoja viittauksia japanilaiseen kulttuuriin ja mieleen tulevatkin japanilaiset puupiirrokset. Luonto ja maisemat loistavat. Tommi Sarkapalon töissä on hiukan samantapaista työtä, kaiverrettua ja maalattua puuta. Yhdessä kuvassa taitaa olla toukan syömää jälkeä kaarnan alta.

An art exhibition by Tuukka Peltonen and Tommi Sarkapalo is open for a few more days at Gallery Saskia in Tampere. I had seen Tuukka Peltonen's work before, for example in gallery Himmelblau, and I wanted to see more of it. He carves woodcuts, and they are really multi-colored. The pictures are printed on thin Japanese paper, and they are really heavy-duty, some even large. There are many layers of color. The pictures often show young, lonely-looking people, dressed and with hair like 80s rock stars. Some of the pictures have references to Japanese culture and Japanese woodcuts come to mind. Nature and landscapes are brilliant. Tommi Sarkapalo's work has a somewhat similar style, but carved and painted wood. In one picture, there seems to be a trace of a caterpillar eating under the bark.

SUKLAAMUNA / CHOCOLATE EGG

 

Tämä versio linopiirroksesta kissasta, joka kuoriutuu munasta, on nyt aika keltainen. Taivas on pastellia ja  punakeltainen. Munastakin tuli keltainen värittämällä. Lisäsin vielä taivaalle muutaman pienen linopiirroksen lentävästä linnusta. Sopii lähestyvään pääsiäiseen kuten kuvan nimikin, joka on vanha pääsiäisloru: "Jos olisikin niin iso suklaamuna, että kuljettamiseen tarvittaisiin juna".

This version of the linocut of a cat hatching from an egg is now quite yellow. The sky is pastel and reddish-yellow. The egg also became yellow by coloring. I also added a few small linocuts of a flying bird to the sky. It is appropriate for the approaching Easter, as is the title of the picture, which is an old Easter rhyme: "If there were a chocolate egg so big that it would take a train to transport it".

PÄÄSIÄINEN / EASTER

 Pääsiäinen lähestyy hyvää vauhtia. Siispä teen toisen pienemmän kokoisen (20 x 30 cm) kissan, joka kuoriutuu munasta. Tähän kuvaan tulee punaista ja keltaista pastellia taivaalle kun alaosa on linopiirros.

AJETAAN KISSALLA PIISPAN PIHAAN / LET'S DRIVE ON A CAT TO THE BISHOP'S YARD

 

Munasta kuoriutuva kissa sai väriä munaan, vihreää. Tuliko kuvasta vähän uhkaavan näköinen? Ainakin ilmassa lentelevät jänikset näyttävät vähän hätääntyneiltä. Jänikset ja kuvan alaosa ovat linopiirroksia, taivas pastellia ja muna on väritetty tussilla. Kuvan koko on 20 x 30 cm.

Nimi kuvalle tuli Lauri Viidan runosta: "Ajetaan kissalla piispan pihaan".

The cat hatching from the egg was colored green. Did the picture look a bit threatening? At least the rabbits flying in the air look a bit anxious. The rabbits and the lower part of the picture are linocuts, the sky is pastel and the egg is colored with marker. The size of the picture is 20 x 30 cm.The name of the picture came from Lauri Viita's poem: "Let's Drive On a Cat To the Bishop's Yard".

KISSA JA JÄNÖT / CAT AND HARES

 

Joskus jo aiemmin tuli vedostetuksi joukko linopiirroksia, joissa kissa kuoriutuu munasta keskellä peltoa. Kuvasta tein sekä isompia 50 x 30 cm versioita, joissa on isompi taivas ja pienempiä 20 x 30 cm kokoisia versioita. Nyt tällaiseen pienempään versioon lensi kolme jänistä ja kelta/violetti pastellitaivas. Muna taitaa vielä saada väriä pintaansa.

 Some time ago, a series of linocuts were printed, in which a cat hatches from an egg in the middle of a field. I made both larger 50 x 30 cm versions of the image, with a larger sky, and smaller 20 x 30 cm versions. Now, three rabbits and a yellow/purple pastel sky flew into this smaller version. I think the egg is still getting color on its surface.

LENTÄVIÄ JÄNIKSIÄ / FLYING HARES

 

Tulevia sekatekniikkatöitä varten kaiversin linopiirroksina: kolme pientä lentävää jänistä. Yhdellä jäniksellä on jopa siivet. Näiden jänisten koko on noin 10 x 10 cm.

For future mixed media works, I carved three small linocuts of flying rabbits. One of the rabbits even has wings. The size of these rabbits is about 10 x 10 cm.

Kissakortissa on valokuva englantilaisen tekstiilitaiteilija Emma Mortonin kirjontatyöstä ompelukehyksessään. Kissa itkee niin, että maahan on jo muodostunut lammikko kyynelistä. Seinällä on juliste, jossa etsitään kadonnutta kissaa. Onko itkevä kissa tuo kadonnut vai itkeekö kissa kadonnutta ystäväänsä?

The cat card features a photograph of English textile artist Emma Morton's embroidery in her embroidery hoop. The cat is crying so much that a puddle of tears has already formed on the ground. JA TUULI HERÄÄ / AND THE WIND WAKES UP

Punaista tussia vielä muutamaan linopiirroslintuun ja kuva on mielestäni valmis. Alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalan harjusta portaineen. Yllä leimuaa punakeltainen pastellitaivas ja näkyy siellä sinistäkin taivasta pilvien välissä. Kuumailmapallo ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia, hiukan väritetty ja aurinkokin on linopiirros nauravine naamoineen. Kuvan koko on 50 x 60 cm. Nimensä kuva sai Juice Leskisen kappaleesta Afroditen poika: "Ja tuuli herää, aurinko hieroo silmiään".

The hot air balloon and the birds are linocuts, slightly colored, and the sun is also a linocut with a laughing face. The size of the picture is 50 x 60 cm. The picture got its name from Juice Leskinen's song Aphrodite's son: "And the wind wakes up, the sun rubs its eyes".

 

LINNUT JA AURINKO / BIRDS AND SUN : 6

Nyt punaiselle taivaalle lensivät linopiirroslinnut ja aurinko. Aurinko on punainen, myös linopiirros. Lisäsin vielä auringolle nauravan naaman.

Punaisella taivaalla lentelevä kuumailmapallo sai väriä. Lisäsin tussikynillä keltaiset, punaiset, siniset ja oranssit raidat pallon kylkeen. Seuraavaksi vedostan pienet linopiirroslinnut ja auringon.

Kuumailmapallo Pispalan yllä ja oranssia taivaalle. Lisäsin muutaman tumman pilvenreunan, sormilla levitettävä. Pilviä on liikaa. Mutta aurinko on tainnut löytää paikkansa vasemmassa yläkulmassa.

Terry DeRoy Gruberin mustavalkoisessa valokuvassa mustavalkoinen kissa kurkistelee lattianrajalla olevasta aukosta hiukan palokkaasti. Onko kissa mahtunut sisään tuosta aukosta? Vai onko se ollutkin jo seinän toisella puolella? Aukko näyttää pikaisesti sahatulta ja ainakin hiirenaukkoa isommalta. Kuva on Terry DeRoy Gruberin kirjasta "Working Cats"/ "Kissat töissä" - mutta mitä työtä tämä kissa tekee? Kortissa on myös lainaus: "Hän on minun hiljainen partnerini. Hän on mieluummin taustalla".

The photo is from Terry DeRoy Gruber's book "Working Cats" - but what work does this cat do? The card also includes a quote: "He's my silent partner. He prefers to remain behind the scenes."

VÄRIKÄS PASTELLITAIVAS / COLOURFUL PASTEL SKY : 3

 

Haluan nyt aika värikkään pastellitaivaan, keltaista ja punaista Pispalan ylle. Oikeassa yläkulmassa voisi pilkottaa jo sinistä taivasta lintujen alla. Edelleenkään en ole varma uuden linopiirrosauringon paikasta. Muutama pilvikin putkahti taivaalle. Tuleeko tästä mitään - se on kysymys aina sekatekniikkatyön tässä vaiheessa.

I now want a pretty colorful pastel sky, yellow and red over Pispala. In the upper right corner, you can already see a hint of blue sky under the birds. KELTAINEN ALKU / YELLOW BEGINNING : 2

Taivas Pispalan ylle alkoi keltaisella pastellilla. Pienet linopiirroslinnut odottavat vedostustaan, samoin taivaalle noussut aurinko. Tosin auringon paikasta en ole vielä yhtään varma. Pitäisikö auringon olla korkeammalla verrattuna kuumailmapalloon? Asiaa hiukan mutkistaa se, että tämä uusi aurinko on sellainen, että ennen sen vedostamista taivaalla pitää auringon kohdalla olla jotain väriä, joka näkyy auringonsäteiden välistä.

 The sky over Pispala started with yellow pastel. The little linocut birds are waiting to be printed, as is the sun that has risen into the sky. The matter is a little complicated by the fact that this new sun is such that before it can be printed in the sky, there must be some color under the sun that can be seen between the sun's rays.

KISSAT LAATIKOSSA / CATS IN A BOX

 

Sarjassa linopiirroksia omassa kodissaan: kissat laatikossa. Ystävän hoitokissa tunki pakattavien tavaroiden joukkoon pahvilaatikkoon. Ja seinällä on linopiirrokseni kissasta laatikossa. Hölmistyneen näköinen kissa seisoo silmät pyöreinä katon ylimmällä kohdalla. Kissan oikea käsi on kantositeessä. Mitä oikein on tapahtunut? Jos kissa on jo pudonnut katolta, miksi se on kiivennyt sinne uudelleen? Sininen taivas pilvineen on mahtava. If the cat has already fallen off the roof, why has it climbed up again? The blue sky with clouds is magnificent. LAHNA KYLJELLÄÄN / BREAM ON ITS SIDE

 Kirkkaaksi väritetty keltasilmäinen linopiirroskala ui auringon kultaamien keltaisten aaltojen alla. Tuntuu kuin kala puhuisi kun se päästää veteen kuplia. Tausta on tehty pehmeillä pastelliliiduilla. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm. Säe Lauri Viidan runosta tuli nimeksi: "Kuin lahnain lahna kyljellään se kyytii evin väkevin". En nyt ole yhtään varma, voisiko tämä kala olla lahna.

A brightly colored linocut fish with yellow eyes swims under the yellow waves gilded by the sun. It feels as if the fish is talking as it releases bubbles into the water. The background is made with soft pastel crayons. The size of the picture is 15 x 15 cm. A verse of a poem by Lauri Viita gave this picture the name: "Like a bream on its side, it carries the strongest of the breams". I'm not at all sure now whether this fish could be a bream.
